25 years ago “Strangers with Candy,” currently streaming on Paramount+, premiered on Comedy Central from the brains of Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, Mitch Rouse, and Amy Sedaris. Sedaris also starred as Jerri Blank, the 46-year-old bisexual junkie returning to high school as a freshman. The sitcom was structured like an after-school special with Jerri rarely learning from her past mistakes as she navigates the lessons of being a teenager all over again. I began watching the show in college, after recognizing it from flipping through the TV channels because Sedaris’ Jerri in passing freaked me out.
Its psychotic humor coupled with my own favorite genre — the high school comedy — was a perfect cyanide comedy cocktail. Aggressively offensive with an earnest heart of gold, “Strangers with Candy” was unlike anything I’d ever seen before and Amy Sedaris became my comedy hero.
It’s, frankly, a miracle that “Strangers with Candy” was made,...

Elliot Page has taken aim at the notion that queer films only have a small audience.
Speaking at the BFI Flare, London’s LGBTQ film festival, the actor claimed that “30% of young people identify as LGBTQ,” referring to a survey released earlier this year about Gen Z adults in the U.S. “So I’m sorry, but this is not niche.”
Page was in London with his latest feature “Close to You,” which had its European premiere at the BFI Flare festival on Thursday. The film — from writer-director Dominic Savage — sees Page play a man who meets an old school friend with whom he once had deep feelings for while traveling to see to see his family in small-town Canada, a trip that also marks his first time returning home since his transition.
The feature — Page’s first since 2017 — was also the actor’s first time using an intimacy coordinator on set,...

Of all the films that played at the recent Toronto Film Festival, a short called Dammi might have the biggest impact in unlocking a filmmaker to do his greatest work.
Yann Demange had his breakout on feature his debut on ’71, then made White Boy Rick, and when the strike ends he’ll revive for Marvel the Blade franchise with Mahershala Ali. Turns out it’s not a coincidence that he was drawn to those films about outsiders trying to find a place to belong. That is what Demange has addressed directly with Dammi, after years of feeling guilt and shame for being raised in foster homes and not getting the chance to embrace his roots as an Algerian and Muslim.
In Dammi, Demange directs his close friend Riz Ahmed in a role that is essentially the filmmaker, down to carrying his real name, Mounir. The haunted young man comes to...

The siblings each have various powers and personalities, but this dysfunctional family finds a way to work together no matter what. After all, the universe depends on them.

Jeffrey Dahmer, a psychopath and racist serial killer, is a well-recognized name due to numerous films and series that have portrayed him and attempted to analyze his disturbed psyche. However, a similar figure, Joji Obara, also known as Kim Sung-Jon, lived most of his life in the shadows of Tokyo’s streets, and very few people even knew about him. He was an extremely perverted and twisted psychopath with a particular obsession with white women. Obara would lure them into his trap, drugging and raping them. While some victims managed to return home, others suffered brutal slaughter at Obara’s hands or eventually died after getting drugged by Obara. In the recent Netflix documentary Missing The Lucie Blackman Case, the disappearance of 23-year-old Lucie Blackman was highlighted, shedding light on the actions of Joji Obara, this sick monster who destroyed many lives and robbed young aspiring women of their dreams,...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case
When the Prime Minister intervenes in a missing person’s case, it’s enough to make the world sit up and take notice, especially in a pre-social media age.
And as Netflix’s latest true-crime documentary shows, that’s exactly what happened when 21-year-old British tourist Lucie Blackman disappeared in Tokyo back in 2000. In Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case, we see that securing UK Prime Minister Tony Blair’s involvement in the investigation was largely the work of Lucie’s father Tim, who worked tirelessly to achieve widespread international media coverage in a bid to convince the Japanese police to take her case more seriously.
The documentary claims that the police’s initial apathy towards Lucie’s disappearance is because, sadly, young women went missing in Tokyo all too often, although usually for benign reasons. So, Tony Blair aside,...

When Annie Blackman was 13, she met Taylor Swift. It was the fall of 2011, and like countless middle schoolers, she’d been listening all year to Speak Now, marveling at perfectly phrased darts like “Dear John” and “Mean.”
“I started the whole music journey as a big Taylor Swift girl,” Blackman, 24, says over coffee at a Bushwick, Brooklyn cafe. “I remember she wrote that album entirely by herself. There was this obtainability to it: ‘Oh my God. She got successful by just writing her own music.’”
So when Swift closed out the U.

Chat with Jelani Blackman and it’s easy to understand why a person might want to confide in him. Warm and enigmatic, the musician is the kind of guy you feel comfortable opening up to. Just ask comedian Seann Walsh, who apparently stumbled across the south-London artist at a tapas bar on Portobello Road in 2018, immediately after photos emerged of him kissing his married Strictly Come Dancing partner, Katya Jones.
“It was so mad,” the 29-year-old recalls, taking a sip of his pint. “I didn’t really know who he was, but he was crying. We had a long heart-to-heart, just standing outside the restaurant after it all came out...”

Demolition will soon begin on a resort once favored by Elvis Presley and other Hollywood royalty before it was heavily damaged by a hurricane three decades ago.
The Coco Palms Resort on the island of Kauai will be torn down for a new 350-room hotel, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.
The resort is best known in movie lore as the location where Presley and Joan Blackman’s characters married in the 1961 movie “Blue Hawaii”.
It’s also the site of other key scenes in the movie, including the last where Presley sings the “Hawaiian Wedding Song” and holds Blackman’s hand while they board a raft to cross a lagoon.
In its heyday, it was famed for being frequented by other Hollywood stars like Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Bing Crosby.
The 46-acre (19-hectare) grounds were also once home to Kauai’s last queen, Deborah Kapule, who died in 1853.

Elvis Presley’s handlers found the formula that would keep his stardom solvent through the 1960s in this well-confected, calculatedly vacant star vehicle that Everybody liked and enjoyed in 1961. The coolest celeb in America ended up in some of the squarest, least-hip films of the era. Why do we like it so? Cutting through the fog of nostalgia reveals the appeal. The Hawaiian scenery is a knockout, plus there’s good support from Joan Blackman and especially Angela Lansbury, who humbles herself to play an idiot mother caricature for Mister ‘Rock-a-Hula.’

The third season of "The Umbrella Academy" saw the Hargreeves siblings transported into a parallel world where they were forced to face more apocalyptic threats and a new group of peculiar UA siblings, The Sparrows - while also tangling with their own complex relationships. Now, Netflix has revealed the show has been renewed for a fourth season, which will also be its last.
"I'm so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of 'The Umbrella Academy' will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings' journey we began five years ago," showrunner Steve Blackman told Netflix's Tudum on Aug. 25. "But before we get to that conclusion, we've got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes."

This article contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 3.
With the conclusion of The Umbrella Academy’s third season, the show finds itself in some uncharted territory. Not only is the Hargreeves family once again lost in parts unknown, trying to find their way in a new-ish reality without their powers, but so too is the plot without a road map for the first time.
While each of The Umbrella Academy’s first three seasons has roughly corresponded to one of the three volumes of Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comic series, the show has no volume four to draw from. This means that The Umbrella Academy season 4 will have to go its own way.
According to Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman, however, that should all be just fine.
“From the time I started on the show five years ago and met Gerard, he talked a lot about where he wanted to go.

The official Umbrella Academy Twitter account and showrunners announced that there will be a Season 4, and it will be the final installment in the series.
Season 3 left off almost where Season 1 began: The siblings all went their separate ways. Of course, death brought them together in the first season, but it’s hard to say what they’ll do now.
Not only are they each going their separate ways, but they’re anticipating living their lives as normal people, as they no longer have their powers.

Netflix has announced that fans of "The Umbrella Academy" will get to spend a little bit more quality time with the Hargreeves — right before the superhero family says their final farewell. The Brellies have been renewed for a fourth and final season, marking the conclusion of the hit series based on the comic book series from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. Expect to see all your favorite return: Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Colm Feore are all set to reprise their roles as members of the wildly dysfunctional superhero family.
Prepare for one last season of dance sequences, sibling showdowns, and screaming funny words like kugelblitz. But while it's sad to see "The Umbrella Academy" say their goodbyes, it's a relief that the series will get a season to wrap up rather than going out on a massive cliffhanger.

With The Umbrella Academy headed to its fourth and final season, the series’ executive producer/showrunner Steve Blackman has re-upped his big, eight-figure overall deal with the streamer.
Under the multi-year pact, Blackman will write and produce new series and other projects for Netflix under his newly launched Irish Cowboy production banner. He is currently developing two sci-fi series: Horizon Zero Dawn, based on the PlayStation action-adventure game, and Iss drama Orbital.
Netflix had been looking to put together a TV series based on Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Down, set in a post-apocalyptic United States inhabited by robotic creatures and following clever outcast hunter Aloy, for the past few months.
“Horizon Zero Dawn and Orbital are elevated, event-level projects grounded in characters that fans will love and relate to, which are hallmarks of Irish Cowboy productions,” said Blackman. “We’re thrilled to be working with Netflix and all of our...

Note: Spoilers for “The Umbrella Academy” Season 3 finale follow below.
“The Umbrella Academy” Season 3 packed a lot of story into just 10 episodes, and it all came to a head in the finale, titled “Oblivion.” The ending leaves a number of questions up in the air for a potential Season 4, so we asked showrunner Steve Blackman to break down those twists and turns for us.
Episode 10 finds the Umbrella Academy members entering into Hotel Oblivion just as the world is being consumed by the Kugelblitz (i.e. another apocalypse). We learn that getting into Oblivion and unlocking its secrets has been Reginald Hargreeves’ (Colm Feore) plan all along, making it seem all the more calculated and cold that he murdered Luther (Tom Hopper) and left Klaus (Robert Sheehan) to die just to make it to Oblivion.

Nearly two years passed between the release of The Umbrella Academy‘s second and third seasons — and Ben Hargreeves apparently used that hiatus to get a haircut.
Of course, there was so much going on during the Netflix drama’s Season 3 premiere — most notably, a trippy, Footloose-inspired dance sequence — that you wouldn’t be blamed for overlooking some of the episode’s minutiae. Season 3 of “The Umbrella Academy” has surpassed “Stranger Things” as the globally most-viewed English-language series on Netflix this week. The Emmy-nominated series starring Elliot Page and Tom Hopper took the top spot ahead of the release of “Stranger Things” Season 4, Vol. 2 this Friday.
Since its Season 3 premiere on June 22, “The Umbrella Academy” has racked up 124,530,000 viewing hours, while “Stranger Things” Season 4 had 76,910,000 hours viewed this week. “The Umbrella Academy” topped the U.S. charts, as well, pushing the final season of the Mille Bobby Brown–led thriller to second place.
One thing is clear: Audiences want more of “The Umbrella Academy.” But despite the series’ growing fandom, showrunner Steve Blackman told TheWrap that it’s possible the series comes to its conclusion at the end of the next season.
“I think if we got to Season 4, it would be a great ending for the run of the show,” Blackman revealed.

In a June 25 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Elliot Page praised how the third season of "The Umbrella Academy" handled his transition and how it portrayed their character's transition in the context of the larger story.
Page came out as trans in December 2020, between the release of the second season of the show and the filming of its third season. The minds behind "The Umbrella Academy" subsequently incorporated the transition into the show for Page's character, sharing the news on March 29.

(Spoilers for “The Umbrella Academy” Season 3 follow below.)
One of the biggest twists in “The Umbrella Academy” Season 3 is the revelation that Klaus’ (Robert Sheehan) powers extend far beyond what he previously thought. Not only can Klaus commune with the dead – he can also come back from the dead. And has, many times!
Through some training exercises with the more mild-mannered Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) of this particular timeline, Klaus learns that his near-death experiences weren’t near-death at all. He died each and every time, and came back to life each and every time. Hargreeves hones Klaus’ skill by throwing him in front of a bus over and over again, but the question remains, can Klaus die?
The answer, it appears, is no. “Klaus would come back no matter what,” showrunner Steve Blackman told TheWrap during a recent interview. “Klaus can’t be killed. Klaus right now – unless, down the road,...

When “The Umbrella Academy” star Elliot Page came out as a trans man in 2020, it was immediately obvious that it would change the trajectory of the hit Netflix show. Season 3, which premiered on Netflix last week, represented the first opportunity for the superhero show to address Page’s transition. Page’s character, Viktor Hargreeves, also transitions in the new season, but pulling that off without it feeling forced or insensitive was one of the biggest challenges the creative team faced. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Page and “The Umbrella Academy” showrunner Steve Blackman spoke about their approach to Viktor’s transition, and what the new storyline means to them.
“I think one of the most special things about this is how it’s handled,” Page said. “It’s not void of emotional moments with the siblings, of course. I think they’re each individually special and in relation to their specific relationship.

Much like the fate of the universe where it takes place, The Umbrella Academy‘s future is up in the air.
Season 3 of Netflix’s comic book adaptation dropped at last on Wednesday, and there’s currently no word on whether the show will be back for a fourth season. But if the series does return for Season 4, those episodes could potentially serve as The Umbrella Academy‘s last, based on series creator Steve Blackman’s initial plan for the show.

In The Umbrella Academy’s third season, Viktor Hargreeves survives the end of the world — again. But for the first time, he’s doing it as his authentic self.
A character as tempered as he is explosive, Viktor (played by Elliot Page) spent the hit Netflix series’ first two seasons fighting to be seen by his siblings and father Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore). Those fights, both within himself and with those around him, played a different part in the end of two versions of the world.
But after falling in love with Sissy Cooper (Marin Ireland) in season two, Viktor returns in the show’s latest season to yet another time period and a new battle. Only this go-around, he’s got a more sure sense of self. As Viktor transitions, his season 3 journey results in him becoming more assertive and taking on...

How many seasons will “The Umbrella Academy” run? The third season of the Netflix series just debuted to plenty of fan acclaim, leaving things on a pretty huge cliffhanger in the Season 3 finale. But while showrunner Steve Blackman has very clear ideas for “The Umbrella Academy” Season 4, he also says it’s possible the show comes to some sort of conclusion at the end of the next season.
“I think inevitably if we got a Season 4, it’s going towards an endgame,” Blackman told TheWrap, noting a fourth season hasn’t officially been ordered by Netflix yet. “I think at a certain point, I’m not sure where we’d go after Season 4. We have to be careful. My plan for next year is not to continually tread on the same ground we have before. It’s a challenge to come up with a new way to subvert this storyline,...
