It’s always hard to say goodbye to things you loved with all your heart. Especially when it’s not you who originated the breakup, but a third person actually. That’s exactly what happens when a network cancels a show that was living its best life with a devoted audience.
One such story from the recent past is the cancellation of a 2022 show called Quantum Leap that aired on NBC. The show lasted for two seasons and then the network just decided to drop it, not giving the series a chance at season 3.
Now a few words about Quantum Leap. As it comes from the name, it’s the sequel series of an iconic show of the same name that premiered in 1989. The new show is set 30 years after Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished.

Despite its status as one of the least “sci-fi” of sci-fi shows, in part due to its focus on “down to Earth” stories, the original Quantum Leap still has a set of “rules” that fans judge its stories by. A Leaper can’t leap outside their own lifetime. “God, time, fate, or whatever” is leaping people through time. Aliens exist. Sam (Scott Bakula) never got home after the end of the original series and it was a travesty.
These rules have become sacrosanct to fans of the series, especially without new material for over 30 years. Fans have constantly poured over the original episodes of Quantum Leap, laying out the hard rules of what can and can’t be done in the world. It’s no surprise that when the new Quantum Leap debuted, especially since it’s an in-continuity sequel to the original series, fans were ready to call out...

There's a market for nostalgia, and NBC's cashed in big with its newest hit, Quantum Leap.
The 2022 revival of the popular 1980s Scott Bakula-anchored time travel series came in like a quantum accelerator, throwing everything and everyone into the mix.
While maintaining some temporal continuity with the original series, the new Quantum Leap introduced viewers to the team behind the project rather than just the leaper and his guide.
What is Quantum Leap about?
The initial twelve-episode order was quickly upped to a full eighteen-episode season, and the leaps got wilder as Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) slowly regained his memories of why he took his unauthorized leap in the first place.
Guided by his workmate and fiancée, Addison (Caitlin Bassett), he managed to survive each leap into various individuals facing moments of crisis that would change their lives and the future.
In turn, Addison relied on the Q.

While the sneak peek will not be posted online ahead of the season’s October 4 premiere, Deadline can share some details about what audiences in the room saw. Warning: spoilers ahead!
The footage confirms that Raymond Lee’s Ben didn’t actually leap home in the finale of Season 1, as was suspected. Instead, he’s on a plane flying over Russia in 1978. He’s in the body of a man named Perez, with Roxburgh, Arnaud,...

In playing Dr. Sam Beckett on the TV series Quantum Leap from 1989 to 1993, Scott Bakula’s character leaped into the bodies of dozens of characters, trying to help them set right what once went wrong. The show’s imaginative format gave Bakula the chance to literally see the world through somebody else’s eyes, and it was an eye-opening experience for him and viewers. Bakula is still proud of how the show approached its characters and stories with so much heart, and he has especially strong feelings about a character he got to play twice. Quantum Leap Episode 18
If it’s answers we’ve been waiting for, then the Quantum Leap season finale delivers exactly what we wanted and then some.
Dr. Ben Song’s (Raymond Lee) “Judgment Day” leap begins in the distant future. An elderly Dr. Ian Wright (Mason Alexander Park) has been waiting a “very long time” for Ben and even had trouble finding another person for Ben to leap into. At the end of the previous episode, it wasn’t clear that Ben leaped into another person because Ian recognizes Ben right away, so there was speculation that Ben leaped into the future as himself. How could Ian be so certain it’s Ben they’re talking to? This is our first clue that future Ian has figured out ways to control the leaps that were heretofore unknown. Ian expects Ben to arrive at that moment,...

No TV show has truly had a series finale as long as the network or streaming service can produce a revival. TV sitcoms like Full House, Saved by the Bell, and Will & Grace returned. Dramas have reunited their casts, or at least passed the torch to the next generation. Here are six of the best TV drama revivals of the last decade.
Raymond Lee and Caitlin Bassett | Ron Batzdorff/NBC ‘Dallas’ revived the TV drama until real-life tragedy occurred
TNT brought back the hit drama Dallas with original cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, and Linda Gray as the original Ewings. Jesse Metcalfe, Josh Henderson, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo, and Emma Bell played the new generation battling over the family oil business.
Unfortunately, Hagman died while filming the second season. The show quickly adjusted existing footage to explain J.R. Ewing’s off screen death, but the show could never recover.

Quantum Leap Episode 16
Quantum Leap’s “Ben, Interrupted” warrants a heartfelt, Oh boy! This episode embodies all the scary intensity one can imagine in a trip to a mental institution in 1954, an era rife with the torture and murder of patients in the name of science. At the height of malpractice, a spouse, typically a husband, could easily have their “loved one” committed. Such is the situation of Judith; the young woman Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) is supposed to save.
Judith’s husband brought her to the George’s Island Asylum where she is diagnosed and “treated” for hysteria, which translates, in Judith’s case, to a woman who is unable to bear children. Ben’s host is a private detective, Liam O’Connor, who is paid handsomely by Judith’s sister to go undercover and help Judith escape by becoming a patient himself.

It's fascinating that Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 13 accomplishes two very different narrative missions simultaneously.
At HQ, it addresses the fall-out of Dottie's revelation that Ian will leap into them at some future point in time. The brilliance is that any one of the team could've been the future leaper, and their reaction would've probably been the same. More on that later.
In the leap, the difference between Drs. Ben Song and Sam Beckett is spotlighted in the authenticity Ben brings to explaining the tensions at play in the intergenerational immigrant experience.
Whether from supporters or critics, the diversity of the new Quantum Leap team has drawn attention and commentary since Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 1 aired.
Like it or lump it, the team is a far more representative collection of individuals and, in contrast to the Sam and Al show that was the O.G., provides a welcome variety of insights and perspectives.

Musical is not a word that immediately comes to mind with NBC‘s Quantum Leap, but that didn’t stop us from asking Raymond Lee, who plays time traveler Dr. Ben Song on the revival of the iconic Scott Bakula drama, about the show’s theme song (could it have lyrics?). All of that aside, Lee is pleased with the way the series has opened up the world for his character in ways the original didn’t. “Because the algorithm in the past 30 years has improved so greatly and science has come such a long way, we have figured out ways to slingshot through time and space and be a little bit more accurate and intentional about what time period we’re going to land at,” Lee tells us. Besides Ben traveling outside the timeline of his own life (Bakula’s Sam Beckett only traveled within the years he was alive), the Monday,...

Where do the Leap Hosts go when Quantum Leap’s Ben Song jumps into them? That’s a question many have been asking since NBC’s continuation premiered back in September.
In the original series starring Scott Bakula as Sam Beckett, those being leapt into would enter an empty waiting room that featured a white table and a single door to exit. They were then interrogated for information that could help Sam during his leaps.

Representation matters. That's a fact.
Those who take issue with Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 12 addressing the genuine plight of trans individuals -- as tragic now as it was in 2012 -- may still recognize how much representation has benefited other groups and hopefully will extend that understanding to all people one day.
Meanwhile, the show took impressive measures to ensure they did this right. Trans involvement and voices informed the casting, writing, and directing to ensure authenticity and inclusiveness.
Admittedly, Gia's story has a very fairytale-like quality to it.
She has parents who love and support her, and she attends a school where she can be open and honest about who she is.
The injustices she suffers -- changing in the janitor's closet, public bullying, teammate resentment -- are unfair but could be so much worse, which doesn't make it okay, just less terrible.
Okay, real talk. If you think that...

Quantum Leap Episode 11
After a two-week hiatus, Quantum Leap returned on Jan. 30 with a bang. More than one, in fact. After the last episode’s setting in a hospital, where Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) was a fish out of water, our quantum leaper lands in a facility housing a nuclear reactor, which is exactly his element.
Not only does Ben, once again, leap outside his own lifetime, landing on Sept. 12, 1962, the day of President John F. Kennedy’s famous speech on technology and the race for space, he also gets stuck in a time loop that’s not nearly as benign as Phil Connor’s (Bill Murray) Groundhog Day. What the Quantum Leap project team at first believes is a once in a trillion lifetimes’ phenomenon (where the interaction of nuclear energy and a quantum time traveler creates a unique collision of two...

The best bet when rebooting a show nowadays is to make an entirely new show with new characters and locations. Keep the premise but change everything else.
Introduce one or two characters from the original show if you feel adventurous.
It is not always a safe bet, so it's best to keep it fresh.
Even with all these changes, there is no guarantee the show will be hit. Sometimes, things go wrong.
When making Quantum Leap (2022), the creators ticked all these boxes, but sadly, things went wrong.
The show features an American lead of Asian descent, while the original featured a Caucasian American. This was a critical development aiming at making Asian Americans more visible in the media.
That might be the best decision the show made.
It features two more Asian characters in the main cast, which is always welcome.
Raymond Lee knocks it out of the park as Dr.

You have to hand it to Netflix! The streaming platform gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of their new series “Wednesday”, and some fans were shocked to learn how one particular character was brought to life so convincingly.
Wednesday, Tim Burton’s supernatural drama series, follows the titular Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) during her time at the Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts and paranormally powerful teenager.
She is accompanied at the school by Thing — a living, disembodied hand (who is also a friend of the family) that serves as her companion, accomplice and sidekick.
While many viewers assumed that Thing was a creation of pure CGI magic, it turns out Thing is actually played by a real actor, Victor Dorobantu.
In some production stills snapped during the filming of the series, Dorobantu can be seen rocking a blue screen body suit covering everything but his hand — which...

This article contains Quantum Leap spoilers through episode 8.
2022 is the year of the reboot. Dozens of television shows are finding their way back to the small screen through networks and streaming services. From Beavis and Butt-Head to Frasier, Fraggle Rock, and Law and Order, producers and writers leave no stone unturned in the search for that next show that (re)captures the attention and love of viewers.
While some reboots, revivals, and revamps dust off poorly, others hit the ground running. The Quantum Leap sequel premiered on Sept. 19, 2022 (Mondays at 10 p.m. Et on NBC and streaming on Peacock and NBC.com the next day) and ran a robust eight-episode, mini marathon up to the fall finale “Stand by Ben” on Nov. 7. When Quantum Leap returns on Jan. 2, 2023, there will be eighteen more episodes that have already been greenlit by NBC and hope runs strong for the confirmation of a second season.

Whatever your feelings are about Quantum Leap (2022) -- love, hate, or indifference -- you can't deny this.
The show is aware of the baggage it's carrying as a sequel series to a beloved original.
Take this exchange between Ben and Addison on Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 6:
Addison reveals the possibility of another leaper, and Ben wonders how he can concentrate on the leap of the week with all the intrigue happening back at Quantum Leap headquarters.
Good question, Ben.
So far, the leap of the week has been the least exciting part of the revived Quantum Leap.
It's partially because of the changes to television since the original aired back in the late 80s and early 90s.
One TV shows are willing to provide answers to series arc questions a lot sooner now. Secondly, shows are far more serialized now, which, in turn, has downplayed the importance of the case of the week portion.

Quantum Leap Episode 5
Leaping through spacetime is not solely the domain of quantum physicists Ben Song (Raymond Lee) and Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula). In this week’s installment of Quantum Leap, episode five “Salvation or Bust,” an unknown leaper appears just as Ben and Addison (Caitlin Bassett) are celebrating their success at putting things right in Salvation, a diverse Old Western town built for outcasts circa 1879.
The revelation that there are other leapers doesn’t require any suspension of disbelief since “other leapers,” specifically evil ones, were a part of the Quantum Leap universe thirty years ago when Sam was bounding through history. In fact, many humans today experience a form of quantum leaping regularly when driving their cars with the help of the Global Positioning System (Gps). Gps engineers tally the spacetime continuum in relation to a satellite’s orbital speed and position...

Ghosts, vampires, mummies and the Devil are not things you would necessarily associate with a show like Quantum Leap.
Yet the premise behind creator Donald P. Bellisario’s cult favorite was one that required Scott Bakula’s body-snatching protagonist, Dr. Sam Beckett, to wear many hats – and, in one instance, a set of fangs.
Having leapt through spacetime during an experiment gone awry, Sam spent the show’s 97-episode run inhabiting a wild array of characters, always with the aim of “putting right what once went wrong” and aided by Dean Stockwell’s Al, a hologram only Sam can see.
It was a setup that allowed Bellisario and the show’s writers to get creative and, every now and then, spring a supernatural surprise.
“The great thing about Quantum Leap was that every episode could be vastly different,” writer and producer Chris Ruppenthal told Den of Geek.

Until he sees himself in the mirror and realizes that the man groping his bare shoulder is being a total creep toward a woman. I'll be honest. I can't help but feel that I've failed my readers.
While I've never claimed to be a foremost authority on the original Quantum Leap series, I think I'm pretty well-versed.
So when Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 4 plays out its "In Plain Sight" theme with Magic being a former leapee from the Og Ql Season 3 Episode 2, a connection I could've made if I'd just Googled, "Herbert 'Magic' Williams" Weeks ago -- say, when I interviewed Ernie Hudson -- I can only hang my head and admit mea culpa.
It's a helluva solid narrative theme. I give the writers kudos for that. With Tammy Jean being El Serpiente, Addison being Ben's mystery memory woman, and Jake admitting that the thought of Eva being hurt or killed while bounty hunting is driving his move to Illinois, they drive that message home.
Another thing they handle well is the "gender-creative" situation...

This week’s Quantum Leap took it back to the ‘80s again.
After helping a boxer change his family’s tragic fate, Ben this time around found himself in the body of a bounty hunter named Eva in 1981. His mission seemed trivial: finding the bounty hunter’s target, Carla, who disappeared after skipping a court date over unpaid parking tickets.

There’s a lot more Quantum Leap headed your way this season.
NBC has ordered six additional episodes of the freshman reboot, extending Season 1 from 12 episodes to a full season of 18, TVLine has learned. (Due to the extensive visual effects it requires, Quantum Leap, like NBC’s own La Brea, doesn’t lend itself to being a 20+ episodes-per-season show.)
