Since the age of prestige TV, the budget to make these shows have skyrocketed to new heights. With each passing year, a new TV show debuts that contains an extremely, unbelievably, high budget, taking the bar higher and higher in these wars of budgets. Yet some studios have no intention of slowing down. Disney has reportedly spent $180 million on its newest Star Wars series, The Acolyte.

The 70s class of filmmakers who re-shaped cinema with their culture-defining works are seemingly getting some recognition recently. After Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s stock is as high as ever. Steven Spielberg was recently announced to be revisiting a classic concept with him once again tackling a UFO film. Francis Ford Coppola is back in the spotlight with his ambitious passion project, Megalopolis. And George Lucas is getting honored at the Cannes Film Festival with a Palme d’Or for his contribution to cinema.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucas would offer some retrospective about his career while accepting the award. He felt nostalgic about attending Cannes, which is where he presented his first feature, Thx-1138, at the Directors’ Fortnight in 1971. He would also, of course, talk about the very film series that is synonymous with him — Star Wars. When speaking about Disney’s purchase of the brand,...

May 4th annually marks “May the Fourth” in the Star Wars community, and on Saturday the space franchise celebrated the occasion with a new trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series The Acolyte.
As previous previews have hinted, The Acolyte centers on a conspiracy to kill the Jedi in events that take place over a century before the saga’s Episode I: The Phantom Menace, making it chronologically the oldest project in Star Wars’ live-action universe.

The cast of the newest Star Wars live-action series, The Acolyte, has certainly turned heads. Set 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, at the end of the High Republic era, The Acolyte follows a group of Jedi played by a who’s who of notable stars, including Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae as Master Sol and Logan‘s Dafne Keen as his padawan Jecki Lon. Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies) adds quite a bit of ferocity as a former padawan named Mae who’s gone rogue.
Add to that impressive list another Jedi Master who also happens to be a master of wire-fu in her spare time: it’s Carrie-Anne Moss as Master Indara. It’s a casting that makes so much sense, especially once you see Moss’ Jedi Master perform some “Force-fu” in a fight against Mae in the first trailer for the Disney+ series. Sans lightsaber,...

Netflix is giving a first look at Squid Game season two with new photos and a bit of footage.
There are several intriguing and colorful photos from the new season, mainly centered on protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), but also featuring the Recruiter (Gong Yoo) and a new character played by Park Gyu-young.
There’s also a very short amount of footage (below). It’s from a scene that apparently picks up right after — as in, a couple of seconds after — the closing shot of the first Squid Game season.
The footage is part of a 2024 sizzle reel released by the streamer; a fire hose of fresh looks at upcoming movies and shows such as the long-awaited sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (including two different clips of Eddie Murphy saying “Beverly Hills”), the briefly awaited sequel Rebel Moon — Part 2: The Scargiver, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem and upcoming...

Every broadcast network and streaming platform is focused on the same thing heading into 2024: trying to get back up and running following a year in which Hollywood’s historic dual strikes shut down production for months.
In the wake of the writers and performers strikes, streamers and networks are attempting to solidify their programming pipelines as several scripted comedies and dramas have been hampered by the work stoppage. HBO, for example, was quick to announce that the third seasons of Euphoria and The White Lotus as well as the sophomore run of The Last of Us will now arrive in 2025. Other platforms, like Amazon, have scrapped programming because delayed production is now affecting their marketing plans for 2025, when the streamer already has a heavy spend planned.

In the summer of 2015, the recently concluded “Mad Men” held the record for the program with the most acting Emmy nominations and no wins, with a total of 37 bids spread among 13 performers. Eight were attributed to series star Jon Hamm, who finally broke the curse by conquering the Best Drama Actor category on his last try. Now that its own six-season run is over, “Better Call Saul” is in a similar situation with 13 unsuccessful acting notices. If lead Bob Odenkirk earns his sixth bid for the series this year, he could benefit from the swan song nature of his performance, as well as from vote-splitting among some of his strongest challengers.
Gold Derby’s current odds indicate Odenkirk is in a comfortable position to win his first acting Emmy for his dramatic work on “Better Call Saul” and possibly be simultaneously recognized as the star of the new comedy series “Lucky Hank.

Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 will hit theaters around the globe on March 29, 2024, Warner Bros said Monday. The studio already had the date staked out for an event film. Also opening that weekend is Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and an untitled event film from Universal.
The pic from the Parasite Oscar winner is currently shooting off a script he wrote based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. The filmmaker is also producing.
Robert Pattinson stars in the title role alongside Oscar nominee Steven Yeun (Minari), Naomi Ackie (I Wanna Dance with Somebody), with Oscar nominee Toni Collette (Hereditary) and Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo (the Avengers films).
The film is produced by Plan B Entertainment, Dooho Choi of Kate Street Picture Company, and Bong under his Offscreen, Inc. banner. The behind-the-camera creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Darius Khondji, Oscar-nominated production designer Fiona Crombie, Oscar-nominated editor Jinmo Yang (Parasite), costume designer Catherine George and visual effects supervisor Dan Glass (The Matrix franchise). The music is by composer Jae-il Jung.
Parasite fired off like a rocket out of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, taking the Palme d’Or and going on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, one of its four trophies there along with Best Director, Screenplay and International Feature. The pic was a revolution for a Korean title on the festival and awards circuit.
Mickey 7 was published in February by St. Martin, a Macmillan imprint. While the film will be inspired by the novel, sources say that given Bong’s past experiences with adaptations, his version might ultimately may be different from the novel’s. The novel’s story follows Mickey7, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.
Here’s a first look of Pattinson’s character in some sci-fi sedation state:...

The upcoming Disney+ series "Star Wars: The Acolyte" already has a seriously stacked cast, but that cast is now even more star-studded. The series, which takes place during the High Republic era and will be helmed by "Russian Doll" co-creator Leslye Headland, has added Manny Jacinto ("Nine Perfect Strangers"), Dafne Keen ("His Dark Materials"), Jodie Turner-Smith ("Queen & Slim"), Rebecca Henderson ("Inventing Anna"), Charlie Barnett ("Russian Doll"), Dean-Charles Chapman ("1917") and Carrie-Anne Moss ("The Matrix") to the growing ensemble cast.
"The Acolyte" will be based more on Chinese wuxia martial-arts films than the Western and samurai films that shaped the rest of the franchise. After all, the series takes place some 200 years or so before the events of the prequel film trilogy. A change in style makes sense to give the series the feeling of taking place in another time.

Altitude has picked up international sales and UK and Irish distribution rights to Mad About the Boy — The Noël Coward Story, a feature documentary about the life of Noël Coward from Barnaby Thompson (St. Trinian’s).
The doc is billed as an exploration of Coward’s expansive career which features credits across the stage and screen, including Brief Encounter, Blithe Spirit, and Private Lives.
Adam Lambert will sing the film’s theme song, an updated cover of Coward’s 1930’s single Mad About The Boy, which will be released on 7 October. The song was produced by Amanda Ghost and Johnny Coffer.
“Noël Coward was a fascinating character. He invented the modern Englishman – witty, sophisticated, and stylish – but was born poor and left school when he was 9,” Thompson said. “He was a sex symbol who was queer in a very straight world and he was exiled from the country he came to define.

When it comes to the thriller genre, South Korean cinema does not disappoint. Some might even say it dominates. And Kwon Oh-seung’s directorial debut, “Midnight” (2021), is no exception. Fleshed in spine-chilling tension, the film features Jin Ki-joo (Little Forest), Wi Ha-joon (Squid Game), and Gil Hae-yeon (In Her Place) cast in a heart-stopping game of cat-and-mouse. The film’s 2020 premiere was delayed given the Covid-19 pandemic before being made available in theatres and on online streaming platforms on 30 June 2021. Nevertheless, in spite of its subdued release, ‘Midnight’ proved a critical and commercial success, placing third at the Korean box office with a gross of 796,540 as of December 12, 2021. Additionally, it clinched the ‘Silver Audience Award for Best Asian Film’ at the ‘25th Fantasia International Film Festival’.

The Acolyte is shaping up to be one of my most anticipated Star Wars projects, mostly due to how little we know about it. The series is described as a “mystery thriller that will take us into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging Dark Side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.” Amandla Stenberg is playing the lead in The Acolyte, and Deadline has reported that Manny Jacinto (The Good Place) will be joining her in the Star Wars series.
The Acolyte is being developed by Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) and will take place during the High Republic era, a golden age for the Jedi that hasn’t been explored in live-action. In addition to Amandla Stenberg and Manny Jacinto, the Star Wars series will also star Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game) and Jodie Turner-Smith (Anne Boleyn). The Emmy Awards went off last night, and some of the best and brightest of TV were honored. Emmy mainstays like Ted Lasso and Succession picked up a ton of awards, but there was also a strong presence of first-season shows like the dystopian Squid Game and sitcom Abbott Elementary.
Miniseries The White Lotus also cleaned up in the Limited Series or Anthology Series category, winning three awards including Best Series. It was initially meant for one season but was such a hit that a second season set in Sicily is now in production.

Squid Game and Quinta Brunson will be looking to make history Monday at the 74th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The Netflix mega-hit could become the first non-English-language series to win Outstanding Drama, while the Abbott Elementary creator, executive producer and star could become only the second Black woman to win three Emmys — and the first to do it in the same year — if she converts all of her nominations.
The two newcomers won’t have it easy, as both will face returning drama and comedy champions Succession and Ted Lasso, respectively, in what promise to be intriguing clashes in the top series and acting categories. Euphoria‘s Zendaya also will be getting a lot of attention as she is aiming to become the youngest ever two-time Emmy winner, while The White Lotus seems like the one to beat in the longform side.

Last year, “The Crown” dominated the Emmy Awards, winning all seven drama categories at the main ceremony. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the drama races and how many trophies the 2020 champ can collect this time.

A few months ago the SAG Awards came down to “Squid Game” and “Succession,” with “Squid Game” claiming three awards and “Succession” rallying to win the top prize for best TV drama ensemble. The two shows face off again at the Emmys in several head-to-head match-ups, but perhaps the biggest nail-biter among them is Best Drama Actor.

TV Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma said this morning that the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations would reflect only “a fraction” of the immense talent on the small screen this year.

For Yellowstone and Reservation Dogs, however, not so much.
Why There Won’t Be Emmy Nominations This Year For Shows Like ‘The Crown’, ‘The Boys’ & ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
There’s no host yet, but the 74th Primetime Emmys will air live at 8 p.
