Although all three of the MCU Spider-Man movies have “home” in the title, Spidey didn’t feel like he really came home until the very end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. That’s when Peter Parker walked into a squalid New York City apartment, knit together a home-made suit, and remembered his late parent-figure’s words about power and responsibility. So why the heck is Marvel unsure about what to do next?
From the first stories by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee to the married father of two in Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto’s Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man is almost always a hard-luck hero, a guy who struggles to maintain his personal life, limited financial budget, and Spidey responsibilities. The MCU Spider-Man movies have certainly included aspects of those standards, but they’ve always been mitigated by the fact that this Spider-Man has a mentor in the ultra-rich Tony Stark...

There are too many Marvel Comics out there to read them all — and I'm talking about both the current ongoing series, and the 85 years of accumulated material. The publisher is aware of this, so what's its solution to hook new readers?
In 2000, Marvel launched "Ultimate Marvel," a new series of comics set in a separate continuity from the original "Earth-616" comics. The Ultimate Marvel comics followed the classic heroes, from Spider-Man to the Avengers (renamed the Ultimates), getting their powers in a more contemporary-styled setting. These were comics written not to appeal to long-time, continuity-obsessed fans, but to hook the new generation of nerds obsessing over "Buffy" and "The X-Files." That reverberated back and Ultimate Marvel became the primary influence on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After highs and lows, Ultimate Marvel ended in 2015. In 2024, it returned ... sort of. Rather than a continuation of the old Ultimate Universe, Marvel has just...

“With great power comes great responsibility” might be the most important line in superhero fiction. It crystalizes a theme present in the best superhero stories even before Spider-Man‘s debut in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman tales and Bill Parker, and C.C. Beck’s Captain Marvel adventures. The line transforms superhero stories from mere power fantasies to stories about service and care, about empowering others instead of consolidating power for yourself.
So when a member of Las Arañas, Madame Web‘s ill-advised magical natives, tells Cass Webb (Dakota Johnson), “When you take on the responsibility, great power will come,” it’s clear the production team has lost the plot.
Director S.J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the script with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker, and certainly a boardroom of IP lawyers, intends the line to break Cass out of her...

As movies and TV shows have become the dominant mode of superhero storytelling, some comic writers have crossed mediums with the characters they pen. Allan Heinberg wrote a brief run on "Wonder Woman" and years later wrote the screenplay for the 2017 "Wonder Woman" movie. Brian Michael Bendis, the defining Marvel Comics writer of the 2000s, sat on Marvel Studios' now-disbanded "creative committee." James Gunn, as the co-head of DC Studios, has brought writer Tom King into the fold.
"Deadpool & Wolverine," which brings the 20th Century Fox side of Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the latest example of this; one of the movie's five credited co-writers is Zeb Wells, who also wrote an episode of "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law." For some Marvel Comic fans, however, his name lives in infamy.
Now, Wells' "X-Men" related work is well-regarded. The 18-issue series "Hellions" was like a mutant version of "Suicide Squad...

“Going to Hell for God is the logical end for the Catholic devil,” declares Matt Murdock in 2023’s Daredevil #12.
Matt Murdock isn’t the only religious superhero in the Marvel Universe. In addition to fellow Catholic Nightcrawler of the X-Men, there’s the Presbyterian Christian Wolfsbane, Muslim Ms. Marvel, pantheist Black Panther, and Jewish characters like Moon Knight and Kitty Pryde. But Daredevil might be the Marvel superhero whose religion plays the most pronounced role in his stories.
Of course, Daredevil isn’t the first Marvel hero to go to Hell and literally fight the Devil, as Ghost Rider, the X-Men, and anyone who had to deal with Mephisto can attest. But when it’s guilty Catholic Matt Murdock donning his Daredevil duds to deal with the Devil, then it’s a really big deal. Which is exactly why Chip Zdarsky — who wrote Daredevil #12 with artist Marco Checchetto, colorist Matthew Wilson,...

This article contains spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #1.
We all know the story of Peter Parker, right? After the death/disappearance of his parents, Peter was raised by his kindly Aunt May and Uncle Ben, who gave him a happy life, despite the constant bullying he endured at school. After a bite from a radioactive spider gave him superpowers, Peter made one selfish choice that cost the life of his Uncle. As a result, Peter has spent the rest of his life as Spider-Man, living up to Uncle Ben’s teaching that with great power comes great responsibility.
At least, that’s how it is in most universes, including the original Ultimate Universe from the comics. But with a revamped Ultimate Universe returning to Marvel Comics, courtesy of writer Jonathan Hickman, Peter has undergone a significant change.

"Peter and 'Mj' being married is one of many decisions we made…

This post contains spoilers for Echo.
Not so long ago, a bright and insightful writer at the venerable pop culture site Den of Geek noted that the Kingpin of Crime Wilson Fisk could fill a gaping hole in the MCU. At the end of the fifth and final episode of Echo, that prediction looks even more sound.
Echo builds to a strange climax, in which Maya Lopez aka Echo gains indistinct superpowers and spreads them to her sister and grandmother to help them fight off Fisk and his men. But instead of punching Fisk into submission or shooting him in the face again, as she did at the end of Hawkeye, Maya performs something of a mind-meld on her adopted uncle.
The move forces him to relive his memories as a boy, listening to his father beat his mother. As Vincent D’Onofrio takes his giant baby approach to playing Fisk to its furthest extreme,...

The following contains spoilers from the fifth and final episode of Echo Season 1, now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
Marvel fans have been starved for more details about the upcoming live-action Daredevil: Born Again series, which will see Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprise their roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, respectively. However, a mid-credits scene in Echo’s Season 1 finale — which closed out a five-episode binge drop Tuesday on Disney+ and Hulu — may have just given us an important clue about what’s to come.

Even as superhero movies took Hollywood and the box office by storm in the 2010s, it has proven difficult for fans of those movies to get into the source material comics. If you're a Spider-Man fan eagerly waiting for "Beyond The Spider-Verse," though, pay attention to a new comic swinging its way to stores in January 2024. That comic is "Ultimate Spider-Man," first announced via Marvel's Twitter account on September 20, 2023. It will be an ongoing series written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Marco Checchetto. The talent involved was already enough to pique comic fans' interest (and we'll explain why it should rouse yours' too soon). More details about "Ultimate Spider-Man were confirmed at New York Comic-Con this past weekend — at a panel attended by comics outlet Aipt, Hickman said the comic will be about a middle-aged Spider-Man,...

"Daredevil: Born Again" is one of the most anticipated Marvel Studios projects. After guest appearances in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "She-Hulk," Charlie Cox is returning to Ol' Hornhead full-time — and it's not just him. Jon Bernthal will be returning as Frank Castle/The Punisher, reprising his role from both Netflix's "Daredevil" and its "Punisher" spin-off. It's unclear if Frank will be a friend or foe to Matt Murdock this time around.
Daredevil and Punisher is a long-standing rivalry; while Matt stands on the edge of a cliff, Frank has fallen far off it. Writers who've pitted the two against each other include Frank Miller, Garth Ennis (whose "Punisher" run was the basis for "Daredevil" season 2 episode "New York's Finest"), and most recently, Chip Zdarsky.

This comic obviously doesn’t really exist. There is no Amazing Fantasy #1000, it exists only in the heads of the Marvel marketing department. Spider-Man’s 60th anniversary, however, does exist, and he’s one of a handful of characters that forced his way into mainstream pop culture many years before Marvel became the pop culture juggernaut it now is. Peter Parker is, of course, all of us when we were teenage kids. Socially awkward, tough home life, constantly short of money…take your pick, there’s something in there that everyone could relate to. The fact he gained his powers also made every kid reading think, hey, if it happened to him, it could happen to me.
Peter Parker has also had a massive influence on a lot of professionals now working in the industry, as this anniversary issue shows.

I can’t remember the last time I reviewed a Daredevil book which, on the face of it, is unusual. Daredevil is one of my top three Marvel characters, and one I’ve been a huge fan of since the late 70’s/ early 80’s. That’s right, he existed pre-Frank Miller. Matt Murdock has always been a hugely interesting character to write, and for me the two personas are so different it is like writing two different characters. Daredevil is the swashbuckling defender of Hell’s Kitchen, Matt Murdock the lawyer who’ll defend anyone in need. Nearly as iconic as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Superman/ Clark Kent when you think of it. He is also as a character very adaptable, and most writers have a very personal take on him. This time round, Chip Zdarsky gets his shot.

Oh look, it’s another ‘event’ book. Soon monthly books will probably cease to exist, considering how many of these event books both Marvel and DC pump out these days. Not a criticism, as publishers will just follow what the consumer wants. In the early days, mini-series were a nice side dish, a treat, to have alongside your monthly fix of Spider-Man or Batman. Now, monthly books seem very much secondary, with relatively low readership figures. Big event books, however, always get a readership bump, and therefore the publisher makes money, and everyone’s happy. The only problem for me with that model is you have to keep upping the ante with each mini-series, or finding some angle that’s not been explored, and that gets more difficult every year. Will this be the event that jumps the shark?...

It has been a year, hasn’t it?
The year started with such tenuous promise, and is ending the same way: slivers of hope among rivers of misery. But even with all the chaos, all the changes forced by the pandemic and that were coming anyway, we still got some incredible comics in 2020.
Let us be abundantly clear: every work of art made in the last year is a small miracle. Every comic creator who put irons in the fire in a year that certainly didn’t lack fires deserves gratitude and commendation. Picking 20 comics doesn’t do justice to the herculean work and dedication that everyone who works in comics demonstrated – from the creators, to the back office folks who kept the trains running on time and let us know they were coming, to the people who actually put the books in our hands, we should be immensely grateful to all of them.

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
The Galactic Empire has fallen by the time of The Mandalorian, but the Imperial remnant left in its wake has plenty of fight left. Mercenary Mayfeld (Bill Burr) shed light on one of the remnant’s earliest offensives against the New Republic when he mentioned participating in Operation: Cinder in “The Believer.”
Fans of the Star Wars Expanded Universe of books, comics, and games likely jumped at the reference. After all, Operation: Cinder effectively connects the Disney+ series to several other stories that go all the way back to the beginning of the canon reset. So what is Operation: Cinder and why is it important?

Fire rains down on peaceful planets. Even without the Death Star, the Empire’s remaining military might means it can ravage a planet’s surface so...

Matt Murdock has been going through some stuff and denounced the Daredevil name. Now he's making peace with his demons.
Like many superheroes, Daredevil has his story arcs where he goes against the status quo in an interesting way, only to bounce back sooner than later. He was married to a blind woman until she was written out of his books and Matt had to divorce her. He was in prison until he wasn’t. He was an evil ninja master until he stopped. He was publicly Matt Murdock until everyone was forced to forget. These days, Wilson Fisk has moved on from feared crime boss to sketch New York City mayor for as long as that lasts.
Then again, that’s not the most important status quo change that’s been going on in Chip Zdarsky’s current run on Daredevil. You see, after taking some time off due to injury,...

Old Man Hawkeye #2
Written by Ethan Sacks | Art by Marco Checchetto
One common thread with Marvel comics as of late has been taking concepts that sound ridiculous or just plain awful and making them work. The Old Man Logan universe is one that will not go away. Not only has Old Man Logan taken the place of his younger counterpart we how have this series telling Hawkeye’s story prior to his epic adventure with Logan. Despite the lack of necessity to tell this story Ethan Sacks and Marco Checchetto are putting together a book worthy of its predecessor.
It starts with the art of Marco Checchetto. Sacks scripts have their moments but this is a prime case of art elevating story. Looking at the character of...

Back in 2008, Mark Millar and Steve McNiven introduced fans to the world of “Old Man Logan.” This popular arc was set in a dark and violent future in which the world’s heroes had been killed by supervillains. Only two remained; Hawkeye, now blind, and Logan, who had retired from superheroism after being tricked into slaughtering the X-Men. That statement alone should really give you an idea how dark this story was.
To say it was an influential plot would be an understatement; in fact, it was so popular that it loosely inspired James Mangold’s Logan. Recent years have seen Marvel bring the titular character into the mainstream continuity and Old Man Logan is now one of several Wolverines running around; there seems to be one for every X-team.
Old Man Hawkeye is the latest attempt to cash in on the story’s success. It’s essentially a prequel to Millar’s story,...

Cast your mind back to the inaugural teaser for The Force Awakens and you’ll no doubt recall that inspired shot of a downed Star Destroyer rising above the sands of Jakku. Surrounded by rusty old X-wings and remnants of the Galactic Empire, these battered artifacts evoked memories of a time gone by, when the Rebel Alliance sought to destroy Darth Vader and his tyrannical regime.
It turns out that legacy was woven into the fabric of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, too, given Lucasfilm’s lucrative sequel allowed its finale to unfold on Crait, the far-flung mineral world that was once home to an old Rebel base. That abandoned outpost turned out to be the Resistance’s last resort in The Last Jedi, as Kylo Ren and General Hux hunted down the tattered fleet.
That prolonged chase sequence essentially forms the body of Rian Johnson’s follow-up, but thanks...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens ushered in an entirely new generation of fans looking for more adventures in the galaxy far, far away, but with the whole issue of Legends canon vs. the new canon and a whole slate of new books, comics, and movies arriving in the next few years, it can be hard to figure out where to start. Luckily for you, it's become a bit easier to dive into the canon materials now that a clear line has been drawn between Legends (pre-Disney) and new canon (post-Disney) stories, but that new material is quickly growing, too.
In order to help new fans get a clear look at the official Star Wars timeline, we've put together a list of the most central Star Wars books, comics, and...
