Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann discuss the Tony Awards race. In the hours after the announcement of the nominees for the 77th annual awards, we reflect on the omissions that stung the most, the long-shot picks we were most proud of predicting and discuss the early state of the Best Musical race.
Sam Eckmann: David, I have spent the morning pouring over the 2024 Tony nominations and switching between delight and disbelief when I look at the surprises and omissions in this lineup. It’s safe to say that this was by far the most packed and competitive season we have covered together, so while I didn’t get a perfect score with my predictions, I was more than happy with my performance. While there is much to cheer in these nominations, I can’t help but feel sad for many people.

Despite being the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) seems unconcerned with the legal troubles facing presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.

Over three days of testimony this week, Donald Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan has spawned subplots inside and outside the courtroom.
With a decision on one contempt motion pending, Judge Juan Merchan has scheduled a hearing on Thursday for prosecutors to argue that Trump has committed more violations of the judge’s gag order against disparaging or intimidating witnesses, jurors and other trial participants.
At the first contempt hearing on Tuesday, prosecutors sought fines for ten Trump online posts blasting witnesses Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen and calling prospective jurors “liberal activists.” Assistant Manhattan District Attorney Chris Conroy said that next week’s hearing will cover four more alleged gag-order violations.
The last was at a construction site in Midtown Manhattan on Thursday where Trump visited with workers before heading to court. There, Trump talked about the prosecution’s first witness, David Pecker, the former CEO of National Enquirer publisher American Media,...

“I actually did see the movie before getting the script, I think it was the day before,” shares Joy Woods with a laugh, recalling the first time she experienced the 2004 film “The Notebook.” The Nicholas Sparks novel that inspired the movie has now been adapted to the stage with the actress in the role of Middle Allie. “I found myself watching the movie and seeing a very specific demographic and being, like, ‘Oh, this is relatable, but I don’t really see myself in this story,’” remembers the performer, who felt that the script for the musical and its approach to the central characters of Noah and Allie were “very affirming and reaffirming that I was supposed to be where I was.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Some words just don’t go together, like Tiger Woods and celibacy. If you have followed the golf-pro over the decades, then you know that he’s a notorious cheater and actually did a six week stint in a sex-addict rehab center back in 2010 after his marriage to Elin Nordegren fell apart. So, what has inspired Tiger Woods to give up sex? Keep reading for all the details!
Tiger Woods’ Tough Times
Tiger Woods is in a state of despair at 48 years old. The golf star was in a nearly fatal car accident in 2021 and had to have multiple surgeries on his leg and foot just to avoid amputation.
Tiger’s injuries were so severe, he was actually forced to drop out of the 2022 PGA Championship.
In 2023 Tiger gave it another shot and was only able to play 14 holes in the Masters before he dropped out because of excruciating pain.

Welcome to this review of this past Monday’s episode of WWE Raw, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s show!
Match #1: Sheamus def. Ivar The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Sheamus’ first match back on Raw was a banger. Picking up where he left off, The Celtic Warrior dropped Ivar with a stunning White Noise from the middle rope as the crowd roared in approval. The Celtic Warrior had his work cut out for him, however, as Ivar nearly squashed Sheamus with a huge splash from the top rope. Sheamus kicked out, screamed at the Viking Raider for more, and hit an epic Brogue Kick to claim a huge win in his return. Monday nights are fight nights, fella!
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: #DIY def. The New Day and The Creed Brothers The following is courtesy of wwe.

Several monstrous giants have worked in WWF/E as the wrestling company has always looked for someone with the ability to instill fear in the top Superstars. Legendary André the Giant, Big Show, and The Great Khali, have graced the company with their physical prowess and Omos is the new addition of such ginormous superstars in WWE.

Angela Deem has terrorized viewers since she first appeared on 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days in 2018.
We thought her behavior back then was wild, but it’s tame compared to the things that have happened in recent years.
In one of the most shocking moments in reality TV history, she wore a barely-there dress to a tell-all and flashed her husband Michael Ilesanmi’s family because she didn’t like what they had to say.
It was… something, but somehow, Sharp Entertainment continually keeps Deem on their payroll, and it’s starting to feel like something horrible will need to happen for the company to stop enabling that level of behavior.
Deem is known on the show for flying off the handle when something doesn’t go her way, and those around her feel the wrath. It’s a miracle anyone still wants to film with her.

As OpenAI breaks into new territory with the launch of its video generation model Sora, it is facing an accusation that has dogged it for years. Ad agency McKinney is behind Are You Blacker Than ChatGPT?, a simple browser-based quiz game that exposes racial blind spots in ChatGPT‘s training.
Each round of Are You Blacker Than ChatGPT? includes five questions pulled from a larger set created by McKinney. The questions seem somewhat subjective, but the answers, according to the game, are not. The first time I played, I only got two answers correct out of five, but ChatGPT whiffed on three questions as well. So I guess I’m equally as Black as ChatGPT, which does seem like a bit of an issue for OpenAI.
A disclaimer on the Are You Blacker Than ChatGPT? landing page reminds visitors that “the game you are about to play is for entertainment purposes only.

Although Call of Duty is undoubtedly the most recognisable name in and outside the industry, recent entries in the franchise have lost the magic the old games possessed. The earlier titles transformed the Fps genre as we know it, blending awe-striking campaigns with multiplayer modes you could sink hours into.
Today’s Call of Duty is dramatically different, with a much larger focus on multiplayer and live-service elements than the campaigns. Last year’s Modern Warfare 3 was a prime example of this, with its confusingly short, lacklustre singleplayer mode that faced industry-wide ridicule. Needless to say, the older CoDs still rank above the newer ones, and we’ve put together the top five.

Los Angeles, Feb 16 (Ians) Actress Barbara Alyn Woods says that a ‘One Tree Hill’, which had a decade-long run with more than 180 episodes, reunion may not be completely out of the cards.

‘One Tree Hill’ aired from 2003 to 2012. The cast included names such as Sophia Bush, Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty, Hilarie Burton and Bethany Joy Lenz.

James Woods’ Nuclear Secrets
By Christopher Nolan’s standards, Oppenheimer couldn’t be a more straightforward narrative. Scientist builds bomb. Bomb ends war. Government betrays scientist. But there is one part of the movie that has some viewers scratching their heads, and it’s right there in the opening credits: What the heck is James Woods’ name doing on the screen? The 76-year-old actor, best known today for his right-wing conspiracy mongering, is listed as an executive producer. 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? Season 8 is shaping up to be one of its most worthwhile seasons in a long time.
TLC went public with the cast and trailer Wednesday morning, and while there are some questionable names, there’s no Elizabeth Potthast and Andrei Castravet.
You win some, you lose some.
We’re tired of Big Ed Brown and Liz Woods’ endless arguing, but it seems like this will be the last season for them as a couple.
As Monsters and Critics previously reported, the toxic couple have split, with Woods debuting her new man.
TLC touts their “successful therapy retreat” in Florida as the reason for settling in Arkansas and looking ahead to their wedding.
Big Ed Brown and Liz Woods’ split will probably be aired
We already know they make it down the aisle, but we’re unsure how their final argument turns into the last argument they’ll ever have.

An ominous, seeping darkness lies at the heart of Simon Woods’ BAFTA nominated short Such a Lovely Day. Set under a languorous English summer sun, a family spend a seemingly idyllic day together celebrating a birthday and each other but something is polluting their joy. Everything is seen through the eyes of Sam, a young boy whose quietness and stillness, carefully captured by the film’s camerawork which places him at the focal point of the day’s events, is at odds with the constant buzzing and chaos of his family around him. Such a Lovely Day is quiet in its eventual denouement, you are aware of a feeling of creeping dread but Woods, in his screen directorial debut, subtly builds that tension. Every aspect of Such a Lovely Day was carefully thought through, from the tones and colour palette of the clothes to the use of low lit interiors contrasting the brightness outside.

Even before they earned Oscar nominations for their respective performances in “Elvis” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan were already flying high. In 2021, the talented duo joined BAFTA TV nominee Callum Turner in filming “Masters of the Air,” a new miniseries produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman. The World War II-set drama — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Apple TV+ — is the long-awaited follow-up to the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” which followed members of the Army and Marine Corps, respectively, during the war.
The new series, which has been adapted for TV by John Orloff from Donald L. Miller‘s book of the same name, follows the U.S. Air Force’s Hundredth Bombardment Group as they carry out dangerous missions on the continent well ahead of the Allied invasion of Normandy. It’s not...

Exclusive: Sarayu Blue won her part starring alongside Nicole Kidman in Lulu Wang’s Prime Video limited series Expats at a time when she didn’t know if she “could lift the boulder back up the hill.”
In an interview with Breaking Baz, the Indian-American actress recalls how she had just gone through the jubilation of landing the lead role in Aseem Bahra’s NBC series I Feel Bad in 2018 and the devastation when it was cancelled after just one season. The episode had a real impact.
Landing the role in the Amy Poehler-executive produced comedy had been “an enormous thing,” says Blue, because it was a role that was ”never written Indian…. and I tested against three white women for it.” She instantly corrects herself by replacing the aggressive “against” with a softer “with.”

Natasha Lyonne has shared a creepy story about James Woods hitting on her during the filming of Scary Movie 2 as part of a darkly comedic riff on the history of sexual assault in Hollywood that left even Conan O’Brien uncomfortable.
The actor told the story during her recent appearance on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast after revisiting her earlier experience with Marlon Brando holding her boob as part of the script for Scary Movie 2 before he dropped out due to illness.
Woods replaced Brando as Father McFeely in the scene, a spoof of The Exorcist in which Lyonne plays Megan Voorhees, a parody of Linda Blair’s possessed character from the original movie. Speaking on the podcast, Lyonne remembered Woods “hitting on me as a teenager in full monster makeup,” adding, “It’s a crazy move, dude.” Watch the segment below.

NPR is about to get an adult rebrand. The new Peacock animated comedy series “In The Know,” premiering Thursday, Jan. 25, follows Lauren Caspian (Zach Woods) – well-meaning but totally hypocritical - as he conducts in-depth interviews with real world human guests across funny, scary, and friendly conversations. Oh, and did we mention he’s a stop motion puppet? Each episode in the series will follow the making of an episode of Caspian’s show In the Know, as he collaborates with other NPR staff (also puppets and nimrods) and asks the tough questions through his frail, overconfident male puppet persona that boasts a woman’s name: Lauren Caspian. Don’t miss any of the wacky humor from the mind of the man who’s portrayed some of your favorite characters in shows like “The Office” and “Silicon Valley” - Zach Woods. You can watch In the Know: Season 1 with a subscription to Peacock.

As played by Zach Woods, who’s made a career specializing in awkward, alarmingly pasty nerds, NPR host Lauren Caspian is the type of tote-bag-carrying, kombucha-swigging, self-described sapiosexual that any other show might mock by having him drop a particularly overexposed Hamilton quote. On Peacock’s In the Know, though, a simple “Immigrants, we get the job done” doesn’t cut it.

Welcome to this review of this past Monday’s episode of WWE Raw, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s show!
Match #1: The New Day vs. Imperium (Double count-out) The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
After weeks of animosity, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods took on Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci in a vicious tag team contest. Kingston and Woods were a house on fire, continuing to pummel Kaiser and Vinci at ringside. The fight was so intense that both teams were counted out. The fight continued with the two teams bombarding each other at the tech area. The brawl did not stop until both teams went crashing through the tech area table!
My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: Ivy Nile def. Valhalla The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Undeterred by Valhalla’s bizarre energy, Ivy Nile muscled her way to an early advantage.

This week in Rambling Reporter: On the heels of Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony where Netflix’s Queer Eye picked up a sixth straight trophy in the structured reality category, we’ve learned why the new season will be one episode short; Lenny Kravitz sets the record straight again on his BET Awards comments to Esquire; a pair of Quiet Place scribes make some noise in Iowa of all places; and Mauro Café’s owner has no plans to close anytime soon.
Why Queer Eye’s Next Season is One Episode Short
A new season of Queer Eye hits Netflix on Jan. 24, and the rollout is underway with Fab Five member Tan France recently teasing on Instagram, “Get ready, folks, this season’s a great one.” Per multiple sources, it was also pretty scary. A string of crime around the New Orleans set caused panic among staff and...

Tiger Woods said Monday that his sponsorship relationship with Nike has ended, bringing to a close a 27-year partnership that teamed golf’s and the sports world’s biggest athlete with the biggest athletic brand.
The partnership began when Woods turned pro at the age of 20. For Nike, it was perhaps the most prominent teaming with an athlete apart from the company’s even longer association with Michael Jordan.
In exchange for the roughly $500 million it paid to Woods, Nike benefited from billions in sales of its golf apparel and gear. The swoosh-emblazoned red shirt and black cap that Woods wore during climactic Sunday rounds of dozens of championships gave Nike untold extra ad impressions.
The partnership faced a major test in 2009 when a flurry of reports about Woods seeing women other than his then-wife, Elin, put the golfer under a harsh spotlight. While AT&T and others bailed and Woods...

After nearly 30 years, Tiger Woods and the sports apparel giant Nike are splitting up.
Woods announced the split on his social platforms Monday.
“Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world. The days since have been filled with so many amazing moments and memories, if I started naming them, I could go on forever,” Woods wrote. “[Former Nike CEO] Phil Knight’s passion and vision brought this Nike and Nike Golf partnership together and I want to personally thank him, along with the Nike employees and incredible athletes I have had the pleasure of working with along the way.”
Nike, meanwhile, posted a photo of Woods with the caption “It was a hell of a round, Tiger.”

Postmodern attempts at genre defiance have become de rigueur for pop artists today. In a streaming-dominated world where we can type away on our laptops to ambient hip-hop in the morning, sing along to old yacht-rock hits on our afternoon commute, and dance to Edm at night, what other way is there to keep our attention than to try to give us everything everywhere all at once? We’ve gotten a few attempts to do just that in 2023, from Kara Jackson’s quietly rebellious blending of folk and R&b, to Yves Tumor’s kitchen-sink instrumentation, to 100 gecs’s audacious and absurd hyperpop assaults.
Many of the artists who appear on this list, though, no longer seem content to just break down old barriers, as they also seek to shatter interpersonal and emotional ones as well. The oft-cited isolation of modern living, heavily exacerbated by the pandemic, has compelled some...

Federal prosecutors are pushing back against NBA YoungBoy’s request to relax the rules of his Utah house arrest due to his “deteriorating” mental health and declining sales of his music. In a new court filing Monday, prosecutors said the rapper’s motion to make outside studio visits and “certain” life-enrichment activities approvable by his pretrial officer is “hopelessly vague” and should be denied by the judge overseeing his pending Louisiana gun case.

On the newest episode of The Kardashians, Tristan Thompson apologized to Kylie Jenner for cheating on her half-sister, Khloe Kardashian, with her best friend, Jordyn Woods, back in 2019.
He said he regretted the animosity that was generated between Woods and the two half-sisters as a result of his unfaithful behavior.
“I think you were affected the most by a situation of losing a sister, basically,” he said to Caitlyn Jenner‘s daughter. “You lost Jordyn, who is a big part of your life.”
The ex-Cleveland Cavaliers player said, “It’s 100 percent on me, but I want to say I’m sorry and I feel bad about it. The fact that I came with my poor decisions and being a f–ing idiot and just being young and stupid, I just wanted to say I’m sorry again for that.”
Jenner accepted Thompson’s apology and even reflected on her relationship with Woods.

When Nashville songwriter Abe Stoklasa died last week at 36, he left behind a catalog that frequently probed the dark corners of daily life. In many of his songs, love sucked, gainful work was elusive, and the choice between redemption and destruction was often decided by a single step. Even his Number One pop-country hit, Chris Lane’s seemingly innocuous “Fix,” was rife with foreboding references about addiction (in this case, to love): “I’ll make you feel invincible/I’m more than recreational” went one verse, while another alluded to a “Walter White high.

This article contains spoilers for the "Gen V" season 1 finale.
Superheroes are everywhere. But the truth is that most superhero stories on TV and film don't really matter. No matter how big the story seems, it doesn't feel like their respective universes change that much. Marvel characters have died, and big battles have been fought, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't look that different from how it was in the very first "Iron Man." This is to say, a show like "Gen V" makes for a refreshing change of pace.
"Gen V" is a spin-off of "The Boys" set at Godolkin University. The show follows a group of young would-be heroes trying to unravel the school's dark secret. At first glance, this has all the makings of a cash grab spin-off, a forced expansion of a story into an unnecessary cinematic universe with nothing to add but gratuitous sex and...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of the Gen V Season 1 finale episode “The Guardians of Godolkin,” which debuted Friday on Prime Video.
“You took that blast like a f*ckin’ champ,” Gen V’s Andre Anderson (Chance Perdomo) tells Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) at the end of the Season 1 finale, which debuted Friday on Prime Video. “Anyone else would be in the ground,” the young superhero adds as he, the hemokinetic Marie, Emma Meyer (Lizze Broadway) and Jordan Li (London Thor/Derek Luh) find themselves trapped in what appears to be an underground medical facility with no doors.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Episode 8 of “Gen V,” the Season 1 finale (“Guardians of Godolkin”), now streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video.
“The Boys” Season 4 doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but in a way, it has already started — at least for “Gen V” viewers. No good deed ever goes unpunished; that’s what the major takeaway was from the first season finale of Amazon Studios’ Gen V. As the second offshoot venture of The Boys universe, Gen V delved into the filthy corruption involving supes, this time at the grassroot level, as Vought-sponsored superhero institute Godolkin University turned out to be the root of all evil. What began as the student group’s investigation into the death of the institute’s ace student, Golden Boy, gradually turned into the unraveling of multiple conspiracies. The existence of a supe asylum/prison known as the Woods inside the university premises was revealed, as was the even more disturbing fact that it was intended to study and experiment on supes to serve the God U Dean Indira Shetty’s motive of creating a universal deterrent against the supes.

As the saying goes, you reap what you sow. The truest estimation of the statement is assessed as the first season finale of the The Boys universe spin-off series, Gen V, comes to a bloody, disgusting end. The entire season built upon Vought’s premier superhero institute, Godolkin University’s conspiracies, which culminated in an all-out conflict in the final episode titled Guardians of Godolkin. While the treatment might please some of the fans, it mostly seemed like a cop-out, a predictable and edgy end to the series, which otherwise showed much promise in its penultimate episode.
In the previous episode, Indira’s nefarious plan to exterminate the supes from the face of the planet using a synthetic virus was exposed by Marie and her friends. Polarity collapsed during an interview, which prompted Andre to separate from the team and rush his father to the hospital. Cate confronted Indira for...

The weekslong Israeli assault on Gaza in response to a deadly surprise attack by Hamas militants on Oct. 7 has already cost thousands of lives, and the bloodshed will only continue as a ground invasion gets underway. But thousands of miles distant, paid clout-chasers on X, formerly Twitter, are using the conflict to boost their profiles — and a few who have successfully pivoted to pro-Palestine content were formerly known for hate speech, extremism, and conspiracy theories. Some may also be gaming social media algorithms through viral misinformation and reckless sharing of graphic imagery.

Jamila Woods has shared her new album, Water Made Us, via Jagjaguwar. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
The title of Water Made Us references Toni Morrison, who once said, “All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.” The album maintains Woods’ interest in Black feminism, but, as a result of being written in the midst of quarantine, is more self-reflective than her past works.
“Water Made Us feels like the most personal and vulnerable piece of art I’ve ever made. I love creating from source material, diving deep into a subject and extrapolating from what I discover,” Woods said in a statement. “We sat in the house for two years and I became my own source material. Contrary to conventional superheroism, The Boys universe promotes an adverse relationship between powers and responsibility, resulting in the so-called superheroes of the world turning out to be its worst offenders more often than not. As a result, the chief superhero management company, Vought International, remains busy covering up the scandals, bloody track records, and other nefarious deeds of the enlisted supes while contriving conspiracies of their own. The Boys highlighted some of the finest machinations orchestrated by the conglomerate, like threatening media and political personnel, experimenting on children, and creating super terrorists; likewise, Gen V gives viewers a peek into Vought’s vile schemes linked with the educational and administrative spheres.

Match #1: Viking Rules Match – Ivar def. Kofi Kingston The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The New Day’s Kofi Kingston did his best to bring his Power of Positivity to combat all the carnage and mayhem of a Viking Rules Match, but the Viking Rules specialist Ivar came out on top. With Viking shields, flags, tables and more used in the melee, Kingston launched the Viking Raider through the table after he grabbed his beard. With the match breaking down, Valhalla leaped onto Kingston until Xavier Woods came down to make the save. Despite this, Woods got squished by an Ivar splash onto the barricade. Back in the ring, Ivar intercepted a Trouble in Paradise to send Kingston crashing through the table.

Rob Savage makes scary movies.
After smashing his way into the horror scene with the pandemic chiller "Host" and the divisive horror comedy "Dashcam," Savage made his first major studio movie earlier this year with "The Boogeyman," an adaptation of the Stephen King story of the same name. And while it was a sleeper hit at the box office, the most exciting aspect of the film was that it proved Savage could take on a much bigger movie without losing his edge. This is a frightening film, one coated in dread and literal darkness, with a story just as interested in its shattered characters as its unsettling monster. Some horror directors abandon their spark when they work on a bigger, more expensive studio project. It looks like Savage thrives.
