Prominent Dubai-based satellite pay-tv and streaming service Orbit Showtime Network (Osn) is launching Osn Plus, a new premium streaming service that replaces its streaming app and marks Osn’s full-fledged entry into the Mena region’s increasingly crowded SVOD landscape.
The move comes after Osn in January re-upped its long-term exclusive partnership with HBO, and expanded its rapport with NBCU to include more premium content from Peacock and Sky Studios. The company also has new deals for premium shows in place with Endeavor Content and All3Media, supplementing existing partnerships with Paramount, Warner Media, Sony, Discovery, MGM and Lionsgate.
However, Osn recently lost the SVOD leverage it had under its exclusive deal with Disney, which will be launching Disney Plus in the region this summer and has rescinded the SVOD aspect of that arrangement.
Osn Plus is being headed by Nick Forward, the former chief content officer at Australian streamer Stan.

The selection of the Justin Kurzel-directed film “Nitram” for main competition at the Cannes Film Festival is guaranteed to strike a raw nerve in Australia.
On one hand, “Nitram” is to be celebrated as the first Australian movie in the prestigious main section for six years. On another, putting the film on a pedestal risks re-opening wounds caused by the mass murder that it describes but does not fully own up to.
The film features a loner, played by the U.S.’s Caleb Landry Jones, and his build up to a shooting rampage.
Scripted by Shaun Grant, the film is based on the infamous Port Arthur Massacre in 1996 in Tasmania, in which where 35 people were killed and a further 23 injured. Kurzel’s retelling is understood to avoid directly depicting any murders and to avoid ever using the name of the killer.
The disguise, however, is deliberately thin. “Nitram...

Shopped to buyers at next week’s American Film Market (AFM), the film turns on two strangers traveling through a desert who stumble upon the biggest gold nugget ever found. When dreams of unimaginable wealth take hold, they devise a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment.
Efron plays the man left behind, who comes up against unforgiving desert elements, ravenous wild dogs and mysterious intruders, all while wondering whether his partner is ever going to come back for him. Principal photography on the movie will begin in Australia this month — where film and TV production has been able to continue relatively unscathed during the Covid-19 crisis.

‘I Am Woman.’
Unjoo Moon’s debut feature I Am Woman will premiere on Stan as a Stan Original on August 28 – the latest in a growing list of Australian films to bypass cinemas as the pandemic continues to depress the theatrical market.
This follows the straight-to-streaming deals for Dean Murphy’s comedy The Very Excellent Mr Dundee,, Natalie Erika James’ Relic and digital releases Maziar Lahooti’s Below (July 8), Ben Lawrence’s Hearts and Bones (May 6) and Alexs Stadermann’s animated feature 100% Wolf.
Cinemagoers may well feel aggrieved about missing the opportunity to see these films in cinemas, although Hearts and Bones and 100% Wolf did play on a handful of screens, as did Kriv Stenders’ Brock: Over the Top.
But distributors can hardly be blamed for opting not to spend up to a million dollars on marketing while ticket sales remain at historically low levels. Transmission Films had planned cinema...

‘Relic’.
Stan has swooped on Natalie Erika James’ feature debut Relic, with the film to premiere exclusively on the platform July 10.
The streaming service flagged today that the horror film forms part of series of brand new originals and theatrical releases it will announce over the coming weeks.
Relic marks the third local film to be strapped a Stan Original following Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang and Mairi Cameron’s The Second.
Relic, which bowed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to strong reviews, tells the story of Edna (Robyn Nevin), an elderly and widowed matriarch who goes missing. Her daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) must travel to their remote family home in the Melbourne countryside to find her, and soon after her return, they start to discover a sinister presence haunting the house and taking control of Edna.

‘The Gloaming’.
Screen Tasmania has put funding towards the development of a second season of Stan original series The Gloaming, created by Victoria Madden.
The money comes via the state government’s Covid-19 cultural sector support package, which facilitated, inter alia, additional advanced development funding. Stan will match the funding as the virtual writers’ room begins developing a possible new season.
The Gloaming is the first of four projects to be approved through accelerated assessment, with the government’s hope that projects will be in a position to seek finance to start production when the current restrictions are eased.
Produced by Madden, 2 Jon’s Jon Molloy and Fiona McConaghy, the first season of the crime drama starred Emma Booth, Ewen Leslie, Aaron Pedersen, Rena Owen, Matt Testro and Josephine Blazier. It spent $7.5 million on Tasmanian cast, crew and services.

Stan’s ‘The Other Guy’ season 2.
Stan and Film Victoria today launched a comedy fund designed to help Victorian writers and producers develop Australian comedy with world-class scope and scale.
The joint initiative initially will provide up to $30,000 each for up to four Victorian writers or writer/producer teams to deliver a 30-minute pilot script and series outline.
The teams will be given the opportunity to participate in a workshop with a pre-eminent comedy writer to build their concepts into a pilot. The successful projects will premiere on Stan.
“We want stories that respond to Stan’s creative brief and feature relatable characters with unique dilemmas fueling the comedy for a multi-season run,” Film Victoria said.
Stan’s brief, which references such shows as Catastrophe, Fleabag, Younger, The Moodys and Broad City, calls for serialised comedy, romcoms and comedy-dramas, but not sitcoms, stand-up or sketch comedy.

Stan and the BBC have co-commissioned a six-part thriller from the producers of Fleabag, to be shot in South Australia with support from the South Australian Film Corporation (Safc).
Created and written by Two Brothers Pictures’ Harry and Jack Williams, The Tourist follows a British man who is pursued by a vast tank truck that tries to drive him off the road.
With echoes of Steven Spielberg’s Duel, a cat-and-mouse chase ensues and The Man later wakes in hospital, hurt but suffering from amnesia.
Pursued by figures from his past, his search for answers takes him through the outback and on to Singapore and Bali.
Lisa Scott will produce for Two Brothers Pictures and her new company Highview Productions while Chris Sweeney, whose credits include Liar, the ITV/Sundance TV thriller co-created by Harry and Jack Williams, and the BBC/Showtime comedy-drama Back to Life, will direct.

During filming of Stan’s Bloom in Victoria last year the creator/showrunner Glen Dolman was already hatching ideas for a second series of the supernatural drama.
So when Stan’s Mike Sneesby and Nick Forward ordered another six episodes in April after he pitched an overview Dolman pressed ahead with plans to bring a fresh perspective to the show.
That involved hiring new directors in Greg McLean and Sian Davies (who collaborated on Stan’s The Gloaming), assembling a new team of writers and adding half a dozen fresh faces to the cast, with the assistance of casting director Leigh Pickford.
Joining him in the writers’ room are Giula Sandler, Matt Ford, Tommy Murphy and Catherine S McMullen. Dolman scripted four of the six eps of the first series, which was named Drama Series Production of the Year at last...

Russell Crowe got his big break in 1992 in a crazy, violent, and controversial Australian skinhead indie film called Romper Stomper. I was blown away by this movie when I first saw it and Crowe gave such an amazing terrifying performance. He played a neo-Nazi skinhead in the film named Hando. If you've never seen this movie before, it's definitely worth checking out.
According to THR, the film's creator Geoffrey Wright is now adapting his movie into a limited run TV series. It seems like the kind of story that would work great for series. Here's a description of what the series will entail:
The high stakes crime drama/political thriller explores the human face of extremism, picking up on the prescient themes and story of Wright’s classic film, following a new generation of the activist right, its anti-fascist counterparts and the multicultural fabric of a country that they threaten to tear apart.
