It’s that time of year again. The chestnuts are roasting, the eggnog is nogging, and some of us are getting ready for a house full of people that will turn this holiday season into a stressful one. So what do you do when you want to get into that merry spirit but also feel a slight bit of homicidal rage at your mother-in-law who just won’t shut up?
You put on some violent, blood-drenched action films that still capture that yuletide spirit. While others may embrace the holiday season with hilarious comedy, a hearty drama, a romantic rendezvous, or even Ernest, you can sit back and partake in one or all of the movies we here at JoBlo deem the top 10 best Christmas action movies.

On Friday nights — and special occasions! — IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Wait for Santa to Get a Load of These Nuts
There’s no doubt in my mind that Santa is a midnight movie fan.
A famed night owl with a criminal streak, ol’ Kris Kringle seems like just the sort of cinephile who would fit in with the IndieWire After Dark crowd. Sure, he would probably be more inclined towards the Christmas projects that feed his ego than a cheap “Sausage Party” predecessor with some of the most unpleasant computer-animated cheese ever melted into imagination. But...

The film’s original plot follows Doris Walker (Maureen O’Hara), a worker at Macy’s Department Store in New York City. However, Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) realizes the man who will play Santa Claus is drunk. Later, he tells Doris, and she hires Kris to be the Macy’s store Santa Claus.
Her divorce disillusions Doris and her daughter Susan (Natalie Wood). However, their neighbor, lawyer Fred Gaily (John Payne), is surprised Susan doesn’t believe in Santa Claus.
When Susan meets Kris, she believes he’s Santa Claus. Fred believes Kris and clashes with Doris.

Some classic rock stars take a while to do the obvious. Cher released her first Christmas album in 2023 during an inappropriate time of the year. The “If I Can Turn Back Time” singer discussed what it was like to make a record at this stage in her life.
Cher gave us country songs before she gave us Christmas songs
Cher has released albums of every flavor. She’s done folk, disco, hair metal, Edm, and country music. She covered tunes by Abba, Bob Dylan, and Miley Cyrus. However, never put out a Yuletide record until 2023, when her album Christmas showed up on store shelves.
During a 2023 interview with The New York Times, the Goddess of Pop was asked why she never released a holiday record before. “I just didn’t want to,” she said. “I didn’t know how I would fit into it. I didn’t know how Christmas...

Christmas movies are one of the most beloved genres in cinema history with every film fan having their own select favorite that they watch and rewatch every year. However, while the genre is treasured, the Oscars haven’t rewarded it as much as you might think or hope. There are several movies, however, that have found their way into Oscars lineups. We’ve detailed just five of those Christmas movies that have managed Oscar nominations or wins.
By the way, “The Apartment” is not included on this list (but might be in a future article). The Billy Wilder movie won five Academy Awards including Best Picture (1961) but there seems to be debate around whether it actually qualifies as a Christmas movie or not. It’s set during the holiday period, but some feel that isn’t enough for it to be an out-and-out Christmas movie. Perhaps that’s one for our forums.

Once again, the holidays – or is it holidaze? – are upon us, bringing with it a flurry of Christmas movies.
You have your endless parade of cartoons, specials, Christmas-themed episodes of your favorite TV shows, bad holiday comedies (1996’s Jingle All the Way and 2007’s Fred Claus come to mind), and Christmas-set horror movies (1984’s Gremlins). Then there’s the cheesy yet feel-good Lifetime and Hallmark films. And how can we forget the 24-hour marathon of 1983’s A Christmas Story (celebrating its 40th anniversary this year), beginning on Christmas Eve and ending on Christmas Day?
If those don’t do it for you, maybe these lists of Christmas movies will.
Classic Christmas Movies
You can’t go wrong with these classics, which can lighten the hearts of even the most ardent cynics.

In the clip above, you see the moment Kris first saw Santa, sparking his lifelong love of the man with the bag. “Those eyes!” the adult Kris says to Scott as he fangirls while strapped to a wall by duct tape. “I’ll never forget the moment those baby blues met my baby browns!” To his delight, Carol Calvin is...

On October 25, 2023, the Daily Mail posted an image depicting Art the Clown from the popular "Terrifier" slasher series in his holiday best — a Santa hat and the flayed face of Kris Kringle himself, wielding an axe in front of a Christmas tree. The bottom of the poster had "Damien Leone's Terrifier 3" listed as the title. Considering the abundance of fan art made from the film series, there was debate whether or not this was leaked promotional material or just a well-made bit of fantasy booking. Well, Bloody Disgusting and Cineverse have cleared the air to confirm that the poster was legitimate, and that "Terrifier 3" will be a Christmas horror movie.
The announcement comes paired with the theatrical re-release of the 2022 hit "Terrifer 2" on November 1, 2023, which will include an exclusive sneak peek teaser for the holiday horror slasher. "For those of you speculating that the 'Terrifier 3' teaser...

Disney+ has dropped the trailer for Season 2 of The Santa Clauses, which finds the Calvin family back at the North Pole and Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) facing some stiff competition from Eric Stonestreet’s Magnus Anta (aka The Mad Santa).
“I am Santa, the rightful Santa,” Stonestreet exclaims in the trailer. “The Santa who occupies the North Pole now is a fraud!” He adds, “Revenge will be swift — and sweet. I am Santa, after all.”
In Season 2, Scott continues his role as Santa Claus after his retirement plans were thwarted when he failed to fine a worthy successor in Season 1. Now that Scott and his family have successfully saved Christmas, Scott turns his focus towards training his son Calvin to eventually take over the “family business” as Santa Claus.

Even though we're not done with Halloween, Disney isn't wasting anytime digging back into the world of Santa Claus with a second season of the Disney+ original series "The Santa Clauses." Tim Allen is back as jolly old Saint Nick, and now he's focusing on turning all the happenings at the North Pole into a family business. Elizabeth Mitchell is still as supportive as ever as Mrs. Claus, Cal Calvin Claus (Austin Kane) is preparing to eventually become Santa Claus at some point with a little Santa training program, and Sandra Calvin Claus is helping out in the background by taking care of the reindeer and whatnot.
Of course, getting the North Pole in shape for Christmas isn't their biggest concern; there's trouble brewing in the form of another Santa Claus. Eric Stonestreet ("Modern Family") is playing Magnus Antas or The Mad Santa. Apparently, he thinks Scott Calvin's version...

The spirit of Santa Claus has been uplifted through actors like Ed Asner ("Elf"), Kurt Russell ("The Christmas Chronicles"), and Tim Allen ("The Santa Clause"), but few come as close to capturing the inherent kindness of Edmund Gwenn in "Miracle on 34th Street." When talks of a "Miracle on 34th Street" remake were coming through the pipelines, I imagine it must have been near impossible to think of anyone who could recapture the same magic as Gwenn, especially since it landed the actor an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He even took part in the actual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1946.
Against all odds, the John Hughes-produced reimagining of the classic story about a kind-hearted figure bringing cheer to a department store at Christmas couldn't have chosen a better successor than that of Sir Richard Attenborough. Chicago – David Harbour is part Bad Santa, part John McClane in this yuletide spin on Die Hard which never takes itself the slightest bit seriously. It’s a spiked Christmas cocktail that’s surprisingly light on its feet. So Here comes Santa Claus with a sledge hammer ready to dispatch some North Pole justice to bad guys on his naughty list.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Harbour plays the legendary Kris Kringle as part burn out, part bad ass. When he first meet him, he’s taking an extended break on his Christmas Eve rounds, drowning his holiday sorrows in a pint of bitter in an English pub. He’s tired of the grind, tired of the kids who don’t believe, especially the ones who don’t appreciate what they’ve been given and just want more. Santa needs to shotgun a beer just to get through Christmas Eve these days.

Halloween has drifted off like a ghost in the night, and most of us have recovered from the piles of food we ate at Thanksgiving. That means it's time to build snow sculptures, hang up the twinkling lights and stockings, and watch some holiday classic films like 1947's "Miracle on 34th Street." Oddly enough, it was released in June of that year because 20th Century Fox studio head Darryl F. Zanuck thought people saw more films in the summer, according to the Turner Classic Movies website. Despite the warm breezes blowing as ticket holders waited to check out this story of a man who might very well be Santa Claus, it wasn't filmed in the summer. In fact, the scene at the big parade was filmed during the actual 1946 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City in November.

It would be easy to play Santa Claus as a holiday caricature who boasts "ho ho ho" at the top of his lungs, but Edmund Gwenn's Academy Award-winning performance (Best Supporting Actor) in "Miracle on 34th Street" shows a much more tender side of the Christmas mascot. He speaks to children as though they were his equal. Scenes like Kris Kringle heartily speaking Dutch to a young orphaned girl (Mary Field), illustrate how greatly this performance has transcended the decades.
With Gwenn stealing the show, it can be easy to overlook the film's wealth of memorable performances. You have names like Natalie Wood, Porter Hall, Gene Lockheart, and Maureen O'Hara bringing this timeless tale of yuletide cheer to life. It's John Payne, however, who is arguably tasked with the second most responsible role in Fred Gailey, the New York City lawyer who advocates on behalf of Kringle in court.

Bloody Disgusting’s Violent Night review is spoiler-free.
This holiday season brings a new answer to the tired debate over Die Hard: the ultra-violent yet sugar plum sweet Violent Night. Director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) infuses his gore-soaked sense of humor into an amalgamation of familiar holiday fare, ushering a new crowd-pleasing Christmas-set actioner eager to splatter the snow red.
Violent Night introduces Santa Claus (David Harbour) as a cynic drowning his frustrations in booze at a bar on Christmas Eve. He laments the current greedy state of the world and its children to fellow patrons before stumbling off into the night to complete his holiday duties. Not before upchucking, of course; this Santa is a sloppy drunk.
Then, we meet the Lightstone family, an affluent and dysfunctional bunch gathering for Christmas. Young Trudy (Leah Brady) wants her estranged parents, Jason (Alex Hassell) and Linda (Alexis Louder), to reunite,...

Have you ever torn open the wrapping on a promising Christmas gift, only to find once you’ve taken it out and assembled its pieces that it’s not really what you’d hoped for at all? That it’s shoddily made, or not quite what it claimed to be, or simply less fun than you’d expected?
Tommy Wirkola’s Violent Night is, blessedly, not that gift. It’s one that delivers exactly what it promises on the box. It does not necessarily deliver much more than it promises on the box, but then it doesn’t need to. For those to whom the idea of a home-invasion comedy-thriller starring David Harbour as a sledgehammer-wielding Kris Kringle holds self-evident appeal, this one seems destined to become an alt-holiday classic.
Pat Casey and Josh Miller’s script announces its gleefully tasteless brand of humor right away.

The now-ancient joke about the kind of pitches that movie executives respond to (“It’s ‘Avengers 2’…meets ‘Glass Onion’!”) is really about what the audience responds to. We’re the ones who like our special-sauce tacos stuffed inside a bacon burger topped with a bun made of pizza. And “Violent Night” is a movie that takes the oversize appetite of the audience very seriously. The title might lead you to expect a holiday horror film, with Santa as a mad slasher — but, you know, we’ve been there, eaten that. In “Violent Night,” David Harbour, that jovially quirky actor from “Stranger Things” and the 2019 “Hellboy” reboot, does in fact play a dissolute Santa who cruises through Christmas on a bender of holiday cookies and random alcohol, peeing and puking off the side of his sleigh — but in movies like “Bad Santa,” we’ve tasted that fast-food combo, too.

The upcoming action comedy "Violent Night" starring David Harbour ("Stranger Things") is just about to hit our stockings. This is no regular Christmas movie, in case you didn't get that from the title. On Christmas Eve, a bunch of mercenaries break into the house of a wealthy family and take everyone hostage. Who comes to the rescue? None other than Santa Claus (Harbour) himself. He's been bringing presents to good little kids throughout the centuries, but he's gotten a bit jaded. All these little rug rats want nowadays is cash.
As it turns out, Santa isn't just a jolly old elf who's a little over it all. He's a complete badass! You do not upset the cutest little kid ever (Leah Brady) and get off scot-free. You mess with the Christmas reindeer, you get the horns, you know what I mean? The film also stars John Leguizamo ("John Wick"). Cam Gigandet...

You've seen Santa Claus stand as the epitome of seasonal goodwill in movies like "Miracle on 34th Street" and "The Christmas Chronicles." You've even seen Santa as a foul-mouthed drunk with "Bad Santa." But have you seen him stuff a grenade down someone's pants and watch him go kaboom? Well, it appears you're in luck, as director Tommy Wirkola's "Violent Night" sees David Harbour don the big red suit to take out a group of mercenaries holding a family hostage on Christmas Eve. Could you truly ask for anything more?
When it comes to Christmas movies that take a darker, bloodier path with the ultimate gift giver, there's no shortage of them. Genre flicks like "Santa's Slay," "Christmas Evil," and "Silent Night, Deadly Night" show Santa as a bloodthirsty maniac on a mission. [Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 4, Episode 8, “Coushatta.”]
Case Summary
Teased at the end of last week’s episode, Kim’s plan to keep Huell out of jail unfolds over the course of the hour, a brilliant multi-pronged strategy that overwhelms the District Attorney’s office with evidence that a previously convicted pickpocket is the pride and joy of small town Coushatta, Louisiana. Not only does Jimmy make a cross-country trek to create the illusion of a “Miracle on 34th Street”-esque letter-writing campaign, but his vast store of burner phones allow for his crack team of New Mexico university student helpers to assist in selling Huell as a beloved figure of the town.
The outside pressure and Jimmy’s talent for theatrics get Huell off the hook, but while Jimmy knows all too well what a huge risk they took, Kim is on fire, and Mesa Verde or pro bono work isn’t satisfying her anymore.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s characters are rarely classified as “adorable,” but The Ringer hopes to change that. Four days before Christmas — and the “Phantom Thread” release date — the site debuted a new 96-second parody trailer featuring familiar voices and visuals never meant to be experienced together.

Clear out your chimney and prepare the milk and cookies, here come the weirdest versions of Santa Claus ever.
The trappings of the Christmas season are inescapable in December. As we try not to be overtaken by the Yuletide undertow there are certain familiar images that we just can’t escape from. One of these is the big red beacon of Santa Claus himself. But even Saint Nick hasn’t been immune to a facelift.
Santa Claus has seen some subversion in a number of disturbing ways through the years, but alongside these perverse visions of Kris Kringle have also been other countries’ takes on the fabled character. Some of these ghoulish figures are Ded Moroz and the Snow Maiden from Slavic roots, the Joulupukki and Mikulas from Finland and Hungary respectively, as well as Olentzero and Tomte, Basque and Scandanavian characters. Aside from constant airings around Christmas, It's A Wonderful Life often appears in other movies and TV shows.
Thanks to the long-standing tradition of airing Frank Capra’s 1946 festive fantasy drama every December, It’s A Wonderful Life has become a popular culture touchstone, and for many, re-watching the film is a Christmas tradition. The film’s story of a small town family man facing financial ruin being coaxed back from suicide by an angel who shows him how important he is to the world is now as festive as overspending and overeating.
Its ubiquity means that It’s A Wonderful Life is one of the first ports of call when shows and movies want to inject a festive feel into their fictional worlds, hence it having been subject to more on-screen references, quotes, parodies and homages than you can shake a jingle bell at. Krampus is back this Christmas and he's not bringing cookies. We look at the legend of the anti Claus himself.
Holy shit, you better not pout. Allow us to give you a quick education on Krampus, the anti Claus of northern Europe. Remember the Heat Miser from the '70s Rankin/Bass Christmas specials? Krampus is worse. This guy makes the Grinch look charitable.
Krampus is like a bad Santa Claus, only hungrier. He is the coal in the stocking of little Bavarian kids who were naughty during the year. Burgermeister Meisterburger must have had a Krampus ornament on his tree.
Krampus is a Christmas character, like Kris Kringle. But instead of feeding his diabetes with nibbles of butter cookies and milk, Krampus eats the heads of children as a Yuletide snack. Mm, mm, throw in a little Who Hash and we've got ourselves a new course after the antipasto.
