Seoul, April 7 (Ians) LG Electronics on Friday said its operating profit for the January-March period likely declined 23 per cent from a year earlier amid the on-going macroeconomic woes that dampened consumer demand.
The South Korean tech company estimated its first-quarter operating profit at 1.49 trillion won ($1.1 billion), down 22.9 per cent from a year earlier.
Sales decreased 2.6 per cent to 20.41 trillion won. The data for net income was not available.
The operating profit, however, was 20.7 per cent higher than the average estimate, according to a survey by Yonhap Infomax, the financial data firm of Yonhap News Agency.
LG’s quarterly profit has actually risen from a year ago, considering the 80 billion-won one-off gains from patents licensing the tech firm that were made in the first quarter of last year.
Stabilising material costs and steady sales of high-end home appliances helped the firm achieve the relatively solid earnings results.

Every since the separation of North and South Korea, there have been people finding themselves on the wrong side of the border. Some are simply people who believe passionately in the ideology of the other side. Some stumble across it accidentally. Others cross it in order to spy. 63 of the latter have previously been returned to North Korea after serving prison sentences in the south, as detailed in Kim Dong-won’s 2003 film Repatriation. This documentary follows on from that one and traces the fate of other former spies who have been released from prison but are stuck in the south until the two nations can come to an agreement about getting them home.

Kim Dong-ho, Kang Soo-youn “take responsibility” for recent events.
Busan International Film Festival (Biff) chairman Kim Dong-ho and festival director Kang Soo-youn have announced they will resign after this year’s edition wraps on October 21.
In a joint statement sent out to the press today, they said they decided to “take responsibility for the recent series of events and resign”.
Their announcement follows yesterday’s open letter from Biff executive staff criticising the duo and asking for ousted festival director Lee Yong-kwan to return.
Similar criticisms have been made during on-going local discussions about Biff’s future – including a forum held June 22 in the National Assembly Members’ office building in Seoul – along with calls for Busan mayor Suh Byung-soo to apologise for his role in manipulating the organisation and for Lee’s “honor to be restored”.
When contacted by Screendaily, Lee Yong-kwan said it is too early for him to comment.

Festival employees appeal for “support and participation”.
Update: Kim Dong-ho, Kang Soo-youn have now resigned. Full story Here.
Original story: Busan International Film Festival (Biff)’s executive staff have issued a public statement criticising festival director Kang Soo-youn and chairman Kim Dong-ho while calling for former fest director Lee Yong-kwan to be reinstated.
In an open letter released today, employees including secretary general Kim Gwang-ho and publicity manager Jungyun Kim stated they made this move after communications broke down with Kim and Kang to stabilise Asia’s leading cinema event in the aftermath of ex-president Park Geun-hye’s political manipulations of the culture sector. Some of those machinations contributed, at least in part, to landing Park and aides in jail.
The letter criticised Kang for giving “indulgence” to Busan mayor Suh Byung-soo even though Suh had not apologised for going after the festival and specifically Lee, through targeted audits and legal prosecution, after they refused...

Following the death of Otto Warmbier, concern has grown for the three Americans still known to be detained by the North Korean regime.
Warmbier was an American college student who was sentenced to 15 years of prison and hard labor in North Korea for allegedly stealing a political propaganda poster from his Pyongyang hotel in January 2016. He was returned to his home state of Ohio last week, where doctors discovered he had “severe injury to all regions of the brain” and described his condition as “unresponsive wakefulness.”

Lee Yong-kwan and three other former festival executives given suspended jail sentences by Busan District Court.
Former Busan International Film Festival (Biff) director Lee Yong-kwan was given a suspended sentence of six months jail time with two years probation for embezzlement of funds by Busan District Court today (October 26).
Prosecutors indicted Lee in May, saying that although he had not pocketed any money personally, he had issued, along with then secretary general Yang Heon-gyu, a brokerage fee of approximately $23,000 to a partner company that had seen losses while working with Biff trying to start a TV channel for festival films.
Yang was also sentenced to six months jail time, suspended with one year of probation. Both claimed that Lee was unaware of the brokerage fee being issued until after the fact.
Lee expressed surprise at the heavy sentencing and briefly told reporters after the ruling that he would appeal the judgement.

A typhoon failed to dampen the event’s opening night as anticipated protests were muted.
The 21st Busan International Film Festival (Biff) had a relatively calm opening on Thursday night (Oct 6), despite rumours of protest and a typhoon that had battered the city the day before.
Rumours swirled in the run-up to the opening ceremony that the local film industry would stage protests against political interference at the festival, as well as to support former Biff executives, who are currently being prosecuted. A heavy police presence around the main venue, the Busan Cinema Centre, suggested that local authorities were on high alert.
However, only one protest was spotted as guests streamed up the red carpet; actor Kim Eui-suk, who appears in Zhang Lu’s opening film A Quiet Dream, held up a sign saying “Independent Film Festival for Busan”. Kim is also on Biff’s jury for the award for actor and actress of the year.

One of the lesser known aspects of S. Korean cinema is the indie film, which, due to the vast popularity of mainstream productions has been sidelined, even neglected.
However, as in Communication and Lies, there are movies of the category that are quite interesting. “The Liar” is definitely one of those.
A-young is a true sociopath, a pathological liar who does not seem to have any remorse regarding her continuous and troublesome lies. Despite the fact that she works in a beauty clinic, she acts as a true aristocrat, asking from real estate agents to show her the most expensive apartments, and department store clerks the most high-priced appliances. In every case, though, she finds an excuse and does not buy anything.
Furthermore, she lies to her colleagues, pretending to be betrothed to a rich teacher, although her actual boyfriend is Tae-ho, an employee at a car dealership.

Busan International Film Festival (Biff) has announced 22 projects to receive Asian Cinema Fund support this year, including Park Kyoung Tae’s Ne Me Quitte Pas and Venice Biennale College project Hotel Salvation.

“Intense discussions” have led to a split vote, meaning the boycott of the festival will continue.
The Korean Film Groups’ Emergency Committee for Defending Busan International Film Festival’s (Biff) Independence - a gathering of nine major film industry organisations - announced today (Aug 1) their members have voted not to lift the boycott of this year’s festival.
Discussions are to continue as the vote result had four organisations against and four for lifting the boycott with one abstention. A majority was required to end the boycott.
No apologies
A key sticking point is that Busan mayor Suh Byung-soo has not apologised for the situation that ensued after he tried to get the documentary The Truth Shall Not Sink With Sewol blocked from the fest two years ago.
Another key sticking point is that there has been no “restoration of honour” for festival director Lee Yong-kwan, who screened the film despite political pressure. He has since...

Busan International Film Festival (Biff) chairman Kim Dong-ho has made a public apology and vowed to have Biff’s articles of association changed by the end of July so that local filmmakers can call off their boycott.
At a press conference today in Seoul, Kim noted he had been appointed the festival’s first non-governmental organising committee chairman on May 24 through a partial change in the articles, and thought it appropriate that he take on the mantle by doing what his predecessor, Busan mayor and former chairman ex officio Suh Byung-soo, had failed to do.
“As the new organising committee chairman, I would like to apologise to the nation and people foreign and domestic to whom we have caused concern over the past year and eight months,” he said, referring to the controversy and crises the festival has been through since the screening of The Truth Shall Not Sink With Sewol, which was carried...

Chairman nominee Kim Dong-ho has told Screen he believes the festival will avoid the boycott.
Busan International Film Festival (Biff) chairman nominee Kim Dong-ho has said he is confident he can convince Korean filmmakers not to boycott the fest this year.
The widely respected founding and honorary festival director spoke to ScreenDaily directly after yesterday’s general assembly in which the fest changed its articles of association to the following:
Busan mayors will no longer automatically be named chair of the organizing committee;
a special exception has been made so that Kim could be nominated by the current chairman (mayor Suh Byung-soo) and festival director (Kang Soo-youn).
The changes have to be approved by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Biff said such approvals usually take about a week.

The announcement comes following news last week that former director Lee Yong-kwan had been indicted on embezzlement charges.
The Busan International Film Festival (Biff) and Busan Metropolitan City have announced that founding festival director Kim Dong-ho will be named chairman of the organizing committee.
The two entities explained that they had reached an impasse on negotiations over revising Biff’s articles of association to assure the fest’s “independence, transparency, regional participatory attributes and professionalism”.
But, with only five months to go before the fest which is set to run Oct 6-15 this year, they felt it necessary to make the minimum revisions to appoint Kim, a figure “trusted by both the film community and the region”, so that they could carry on with preparations.
They will hold a temporary general assembly to appoint Kim in May, and will work towards an overall revision of the articles of association by next year’s regular general assembly...

In South Korea, the Busan prosecutors’ office has indicted former Busan International Film Festival (Biff) director Lee Yong-kwan [pictured] and two others on charges of embezzlement. Deputy festival director and Asian Film Market head Jay Jeon has been indicted on charges of fraud.
In a statement, Biff festival director Kang Soo-youn today apologized “to everyone who cares for the Busan International Film Festival” for creating concern over the results of the prosecutors’ investigation and pledged the festival would be run more transparently in future.
“It is greatly regrettable that this prosecutors’ investigation started with political intent,” she said. Kang Soo-youn added that it is “unprecedented” that a festival director be fired and have charges filed against him with the prosecutors “because of screening a certain film” referring to the documentary The Truth Shall Not Sink With Sewol, which Busan mayor Suh Byung-soo tried to block two years ago.
