Dean Phillips — liquor heir, gelato prince, step-grandson of the advice columnist Dear Abby, and Democratic congressman from Minnesota — is challenging Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination for president. Phillips filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday night.
Phillips will officially announce in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Friday, which is the deadline to appear on the primary ballot in the state. To call his candidacy a longshot is an understatement, but Phillips has a good shot of winning the Democratic primary in New Hampshire — because Biden will not appear on the ballot.

Donald Trump surrendered in Atlanta on Thursday, where he was booked and fingerprinted after being indicted on 13 different counts stemming from his efforts to overturn election results in the state of Georgia during the 2020 presidential election, including racketeering, conspiracy and soliciting a public official to violate their oath of office.
For those counting, this marks Trump’s fourth indictment, following charges of fraud from the Southern District of New York, and two federal indictments, racking up 91 charges so far.
In addition to posing for a mug shot, Trump’s height and weight were recorded as six-foot-three and 215 lbs.

Those numbers raised eyebrows. MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Joe Scarborough, a one-time friend of Trump before turning adversary, noted that he’s six-four, and pegged Trump’s height as closer to six-one.

The Lincoln Project — a political action committee (Pac) founded by anti-Trump Republicans — is probably best known for flooding the TV airwaves (and your social media feeds) with videos mocking or attacking President Trump or his Republican allies.
The PACs founders, which include Reed Galen, Steve Schmidt, Rick Wilson and George Conway, were even featured in a 60 Minutes profile this past Sunday.
According to its latest quarterly report with the Federal Election Commission, The Lincoln Project has also become a favorite for some of Hollywood’s political heavyweights, with a number of prominent Democratic donors shifting some of their 2020 election spend toward ...

A Supreme Court seat has opened in an election year, and you’ll never guess who is strongly in favor of filling it — all of the people who were against it last time. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues would like to fill the vacancy created by Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, despite the fact that they spent the better part of 2016 vehemently opposing the idea of having a Supreme Court fight so close to ballot-casting time. (For reference, Antonin Scalia’s unexpected death was 269 days before...

Updated with video: Bill Maher found his stride in his first episode since March to originate from the regular studio home of HBO’s Real Time, capping tonight’s show with a call-to-postal-action against — who else — President Donald Trump.
“If Trump’s going to try to scuttle the Post Office, we need to fight back,” the host said, delivering his “New Rules” show-ending monologue from his familiar set at LA’s CBS Television City. Starting in October, he added, “Don’t use the mail for anything but ballots until the election is over” on November 3.
Without an in-person audience due to Covid-19 restrictions, no one applauded Maher’s proposed hashtag for the postal effort: #FreeUpTheMail, but he charged forward anyway. The segment, along with conversations with guests Wynton Marsalis, Trey Gowdy, Rick Wilson and Nina Burleigh, saw Maher ditch the self-pitying mewling of some of his recent backyard efforts during the pandemic.

In between writing bestselling novels — and writing the occasional column for Deadline — author Don Winslow has taken on a new vocation. He has been making very barbed viral videos that assail everything from President Donald Trump’s policies on combating the coronavirus pandemic to the president’s place in history. Winslow reveals here that he is so serious about these films that he won’t do much writing until after Election Day. He paused to answer a few questions on exactly why he’s doing this and how far he intends to go. Above is his latest film.
Deadline: Why make partisan videos when, from a business sense, you risk polarizing your audience?
Winslow: Honestly, I cannot worry about that. I’m an unusual case. I became an overnight success in my mid-50s and because of very good representation late in my career; money is no longer a concern.

Last night’s Real Time with Bill Maher examined the vexing problem so many Americans wrestle with: How many Muslim refugees are a comfortable amount and if they bring their laws, fundamentalist aspects of their religion and customs with them, will there be an all out war over this? The guests were neuroscientist and author Sam Harris, former Army intelligence officer Jason Kander, Gop vlogger Tomi Lahren, Gop strategist-turned-journalist Rick Wilson and Michael Eric Dyson. Sam Harris opened the show and talked about the tricky issues of navigating president Donald Trump’s bellicose handling of the issue and how we as a...read more...
