Movie stars Zhou Xun and Jelly Lin head the cast of “Imperfect Victim,” a new mainland Chinese drama series that focuses on workplace sexual harassment and leads to a rape trial.
Zhou plays a lawyer who steps in to represent the character played by Lin (“The Mermaid”), who alleges assault by her boss at work. He is portrayed by TV veteran Liu Yijun. The case becomes complicated and Zhou’s character is forced to question her own ethics.
The show is highly topical, given the slowly building #MeToo movement in China. This is being fuelled by numerous instances of sexual discrimination, sexual assault and outright violence towards women, many instances of which have gone viral on Chinese social media before being deleted by censors.

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Above: The Witch Who Came From the SeaAcross decades and genres, mermaids and sirens rise from the deep to confront audiences with the already unstable human identity. In 2009, Nadya Vessey, an Australian double amputee, bewitched the world with her personal transformation—with the help of special effects company Weta Workshop, she acquired a prosthetic mermaid tail. As glamorized as it was by news stories, Vessay’s adult mermaid embodiment serves as an example of how the female—and disabled—body queers one of the longest-standing fetishes of the male gaze. It is precisely the hybrid nature of the marine feminine which attracts and repulses, its fluidity intimately tied to female maturation, in the process of which the flesh and bone remain both human and foreign at the same time. There’s...

Hot off the success of last year’s box office record-setting smash The Mermaid, Stephen Chow brought us a sequel this Lunar New Year to his 2013 film Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons. While it set an opening day record in China, and was initially released in North America on roughly twice as many screens, it has thus far failed to match The Mermaid’s financial success. I have no idea why that is, anyone who claims to understand what makes the difference between a hit and a super-hit is a liar or a fool, but I can theorize that the film’s somewhat mixed critical response is a response to its weird hybrid nature. Not just in the ways Chow situates a sincere appreciation for religion within a goofy pop context, but in the film’s dual authorship between Chow, who co-wrote and produced, and Tsui Hark, who directed.

A wacky fantasy lark, half screwball comedy, half Looney Tunes. Chinese audiences have thrown half a billion dollars at it. Prepare for Hollywood imitators. I’m “biast” (pro): have enjoyed Stephen Chow’s other movies
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
What are the biggest movies on the planet right now? If you said 1) Star Wars: The Force Awakens and 2) Deadpool, you’d be correct. But you may have trouble guessing No 3, because it has barely made a blip in North America or the U.K. The Mermaid has, however, just passed the half-a-billion (in U.S. dollars) mark at the Chinese box office, after less than a month in release; it’s the first film ever to take in so much across any length of time there, and it’s waaay more than Star Wars has earned there. (Deadpool...
