Having trouble predicting who will win Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Robert Downey Jr. (“The Sympathizer”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are Lewis Pullman (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Jonathan Bailey (“Fellow Travelers”), Hugh Grant (“The Regime”), John Hawkes (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Treat Williams (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”) — but that could all change in the coming months.
As of this writing, all six of our Emmy Experts predict a victory for Downey: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (Wdaf-tv Fox) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby). He plays various villainous roles, all representing the American establishment, on HBO’s adaptation...

When Sarah Adina Smith was first approached about directing “Lessons in Chemistry,” she was not familiar with the Bonnie Garmus novel of the same name on which the series is based. Smith had to “speed-read the book” in one weekend and admits that she was not quite sure at first if a series adaptation was necessary. Set in the 1950s and ’60s, “Lessons” follows Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson), a brilliant chemist whose career aspirations are stalled by patriarchal norms but later becomes the star of a cooking show, “Supper at Six,” on which she gets to flex her science know-how.
“To be honest, maybe I’m not supposed to say this, but I was like, ‘Do we need this series?’ Yes, obviously, sexism is alive and well. I don’t need to debate that, but do we need this story about a fictional female scientist in the ’50s facing discrimination in the workplace?...

Lewis Pullman may be getting a jolt, courtesy of Marvel Studios. The Top Gun: Maverick actor is Marvel’s top choice to star in Thunderbolts, and has an offer for the role vacated by Steven Yeun earlier this month.
Marvel and reps for Pullman did not respond to requests for comment.
Yeun was attached to Thunderbolts in February 2023, though Marvel did not officially announce his casting. But on Jan. 2, news broke that the Oscar-nominated actor was departing the project centering on Marvel’s villains and antiheroes.
Thunderbolts was hit by delays due to the writers and actors strikes of 2023, with its release date pushed a year to July 25, 2025. The film has a cast that includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Jake Schreier is directing the feature, which has not yet begun filming.

“Lessons in Chemistry” star Aja Naomi King still finds hope in the devastating end to her character Harriet’s arc in the Apple TV+ drama series.
Based on real historical events, the show’s finale finds politicians passing the act that enabled the Santa Monica freeway construction that destroyed the Sugar Hill neighborhood in which Harriet and Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson) live. When Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman) first started at Hastings Lab before Elizabeth entered the picture and moved in with him, he forged a bond with Harriet and her husband Charlie (Paul James). Even before she grew closer to Elizabeth in the wake of Calvin’s death, Harriet advocated for the dismissal of building a freeway through her and Calvin’s neighborhood, which would render them homeless.

In Bonnie Garmus’ novel Lessons in Chemistry, the character of Harriet Sloane is a middle-aged white woman with adult children who befriends her neighbor, the book’s protagonist, Elizabeth Zott, becoming a support system for the chemist as she navigates new motherhood as a single parent. In the Apple TV+ adaptation, the friendship that develops between Zott, played by Brie Larson, and the catalyst for it remains true. But in casting Aja Naomi King in the role of Sloane, the series expands the setting beyond the all-white world of 1950s L.A., in which Zott and her partner, fellow chemist Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman), mostly exist to tell the little-known story of the predominately Black neighborhood of Sugar Hill and the racial dynamics of the time that destroyed it.

Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson has had supporting roles in romantic comedies like The Spectacular Now and Trainwreck. But in Lessons in Chemistry, she gets to tell a love story of her own.
“Part of my initial interest in this story is that love depictions are so sacred and so important, and how they come to you and why they come to you is part of the magic of this life,” says Larson, who stars in the lead role of Elizabeth Zott in the Apple TV+ series. “It also means it’s very hard to grapple with.”

While it has focused primarily on female relationships from the eyes of Elizabeth Zott, Lessons In Chemistry Season 1 Episode 7, "Book Of Calvin" changes things up.
Focusing on Calvin Evans in a close-up, intimate way, we finally learn the backstory of Madeline's father, the tale Elizabeth has yearned to know for years.
Though we've heard from Calvin Evans occasionally since his untimely death on Lessons In Chemistry Season 1 Episode 2, he's been sparse.
Called in hallucinations and flashbacks, the series has allowed Calvin to take a backseat but finally answered nearly all the lingering questions the viewers and the Zott family had about him.
We learn about Calvin's troubling past, his introduction to chemistry, and the depth of his feelings about Elizabeth in one of the most interesting ways possible.

[Warning: The above interview contains spoilers about the first two episodes of “Lessons in Chemistry.” Watch at your own risk.]
Already in early discussions with showrunner Lee Eisenberg and director of the first two episodes Sarah Adina Smith, it became clear to editor Matthew Barbato that cutting the opening two installments of “Lessons in Chemistry” would involve a great deal of “experimentation.”
“What Sarah did, and what Lee did, is they provided us with a great framework, and a lot of great material. And once we got into the edit, we were able to sort of play around, and we had the freedom to kind of find the moments that we needed, and the rhythm that we needed,” Barbato says of editing the first two episodes of the Apple TV+ limited series during a recent webchat with Gold Derby (watch the full exclusive video interview above).

If you’re still feeling very big feelings after Episode 3 of “Lessons in Chemistry,” thanks to some poignant narration from a certain pup, don’t worry — you’re not alone. In fact, directors Bert and Bertie specifically set out to do that. But, they do admit that telling a story of grief through the lens of a dog was “eye-opening,” even for them.
In this particular episode of the Brie Larson-led limited series, now streaming on Apple TV+, the opening minutes tell the origin story of Six Thirty, the dog Elizabeth Zott (Larson) adopted who later tried saving Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman) from running out into the street to his death. Not only is it a heartbreaking origin — he started as a military dog, but ran away — but the narration that follows, courtesy of B.J. Novak, likely left you holding your own dog close, as Six Thirty mourned his running buddy and blamed himself.

In Hear Me Out, Primetimer staffers and contributors espouse their pet theories, hot takes, and even the occasional galaxy-brain idea.
B.J. Novak has tackled many roles over his career. The Temp turned criminal on The Office. One of the surviving “Basterds” in Inglourious Basterds. A children’s author. Mindy Kaling’s Bff (not to mention the oft-rumored father to her children). As it turns out, his crowning achievement is quite possibly voicing the dog, Six-Thirty, on Lessons in Chemistry.
When the Apple TV+ show’s third episode opens immediately following the shocking death of Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman), it does so from the perspective of Six-Thirty, the stray labradoodle Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson) took in. Of the limited series’ eight installments, this chapter also happens to be the most poignant.

Six Thirty (voiced by Bj Novak) found Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson) and Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman) after he ran away from the strict bomb-sniffing training he strongly disliked.
An exclusive clip provided to TheWrap shows the beloved dog failing miserably at his training to be tough, brave and a bit vicious.
“I can’t remember the day I was born. I can’t remember my parents. I can’t remember how I ended up in this place where I so clearly wasn’t built to be,” Novak’s voiceover says as Six Thirty quails from attacking a man, and four loud bomb blasts go off. “The first thing I remember is fear. I was there to be brave. I was trained to protect. I was supposed to act, but instead, I was paralyzed. I was a coward and I hated myself for it.”

The placement of a particular cliffhanger at the end of “Lessons in Chemistry’s” second episode was debated intensely by showrunner Lee Eisenberg, director Sarah Adina Smith and the show’s writers.
The second episode in the Apple TV+ series, adapted from the best-selling novel by Bonnie Garmus, ends on a tragic note with the death of the character Calvin Evans, portrayed by Lewis Pullman. The first two episodes premiered Friday.

From chemistry to cooking, “Lessons in Chemistry” star and executive producer Brie Larson learned multiple skills for her role as Elizabeth Zott, the main character in the Apple TV+ adaptation of Bonnie Garmus’ popular novel.
Zott, who works as a chemist at Hastings Lab in Commons, California, should have her Ph.D. in chemistry, but the reason she only achieved the master’s level becomes clear in later episodes. Many other unplanned obstacles challenge Zott in her drive to make advances in the field of abiogenesis — also known as spontaneous generation, or the original evolution of life or living organisms from inorganic or inanimate substances. Showrunner Lee Eisenberg and director of the first two episodes Sara Adina Smith described all of the different aspects of Zott that Larson had to prepare for.
