New York, New York, the John Kander & Fred Ebb musical that arrived on Broadway last spring to considerable anticipation, will play its final performance on Sunday, July 30, having played just 33 preview and 110 regular performances.
The musical, which features additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and was directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, opened to mixed-to-negative reviews at the St. James Theatre on April 26. The approximately $25 million production was nominated for nine Tony Awards but took the trophy for only one – Beowulf Boritt’s elaborate scenic design.
Recent weeks have seen attendance at the St. James hovering around 70% of capacity.

New York, New York, the latest Kander and Ebb musical on Broadway, announced Sunday that it will close in one week.
The musical, which also features additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is inspired by the 1977 film, which was directed by Martin Scorsese and featured Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro. The show opened at the St. James Theatre on April 26 and will now play its final performance July 30.
The sudden closure comes as the large-scale production, which had a big cast and expansive scenery, has failed to pull in big numbers at the box office, amid unfavorable reviews. In recent weeks, capacity has hovered just above 70 percent. Additionally, the musical won only one Tony Award, for best scenic design, after being nominated for nine, including best musical.

Grey House, a rare thriller on Broadway, will be closing on July 30, after opening at the beginning of June.
The play, which stars Laurie Metcalf, Tatiana Maslany and Sophia Anne Caruso and features direction by Joe Mantello, began preview performances at the Lyceum Theatre on April 29 and opened on June 6. While the concept of horror is not often seen on Broadway, the production was not able to translate that to ticket sales and saw a soft box office throughout its run.
Since opening week, capacity for the show has not risen above 70 percent, and has dipped into the 50s. Grosses have similarly stayed under $400,000.
Written by Levi Holloway, the play follows a couple (Maslany and Paul Sparks) who crash their car in the mountains and seek shelter in a cabin. While there, they witness strange behavior from the inhabitants of the cabin, who include Metcalf, Caruso and a band of young kids,...

You know what they say about Broadway: If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to be adapting a musical loosely inspired by Martin Scorsese’s beloved 1977 movie musical “New York, New York” for Broadway, set for a March 2023 release. The official opening night will be in April 2023, and Tony winner Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph the musical.
The Scorsese film starred Liza Minnelli as a lounge singer who falls for a saxophonist, played by Robert De Niro. Their romance gives way to their respective ambitions and dreams of music stardom against the backdrop of the Big Apple in the 1940s.
However, the same characters will not be appearing in the new iteration. Deadline reported the Broadway production will “feature little of Scorsese’s storyline” from the film. Yet the setting remains the same: post-war 1946 in Manhattan as the city recovers.

IndieWire asked Jeff Kaufman, the writer-producer-director of “Every Act of Life,” a documentary about Tony-winning playwright Terrence McNally, to remember the writer of the books for musicals “Kiss of the Spider Woman — the Musical,” and “Ragtime,” as well as “Master Class” and two plays that he adapted into “Love! Valour! Compassion!” and “Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune,” which were directed by Joe Mantello and Garry Marshall, respectively. On Wednesday, McNally, who had been fighting lung cancer, succumbed at age 81 from complications of the Coronavirus.
When I first spoke to Terrence McNally about making a documentary on his life, he said something like, “Everything you need to know about me is in my work. What is there to say?” As everyone who has seen or read Terrence’s plays, books for musicals, opera librettos, and screenplays knows, there is so much to discover (and appreciate) in the characters and worlds he created.

Hadestown, the Tony-Winning Best New Musical, has become the first musical of the 2018-2019 Broadway season to recoup its initial investment of $11.5M, producers said today.
The announcement was made by producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy.
The musical, written by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, is one of the few productions from last season that continues to fill all of its seats, week after week. Hadestown is the highest-grossing musical in the history of Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre.
Lead producer Mara Isaacs said in a statement, “Hadestown is a testament to the power of live theater to connect us all. It started in 2006 as an indie theater project, traveling around New England in a silver-painted school bus and has grown to something that has touched millions of people. Broadway’s Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, director Arin Arbus revival of the Terrence McNally play starring Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon, will close a month earlier than expected. With box office on a downward slope in recent weeks, the production will play its final performance on Sunday, July 28 at the Broadhurst Theatre.
The play, generally well received by critics, had been set to close Aug. 25. Box office has been disappointing, to put it mildly. Grosses for last week fell to $231,745, 20% of a potential $1.1 million. Attendance of 4,597 was 49% of capacity.
The early closing was announced today by producers Hunter Arnold, Debbie Bisno and Tom Kirdahy.
The $4.1M revival began previews May 4 and opened May 30 – too late to qualify for the 2019 Tony Awards or benefit from potential nominations.
The production, notable for being Broadway’s first to employ an “intimacy director” (Claire Warden) to assist with the graphic depiction of sex and nudity, is officially the first production of Broadway’s 2019-2020 season.
In a joint statement, the producers said, “We are all very proud of the work that Audra, Michael, Arin, Terrence, Claire and the rest of the company have done to bring this new Broadway production to life. There is so much for us to celebrate: Arin’s Broadway debut, Terrence’s 80th birthday this year – including a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award!, and Claire’s work as the first intimacy director on Broadway.”
The statement continued: “What Audra and Michael do on stage eight shows a week in this timely and relevant story of human connection is nothing short of remarkable; their performances are certainly worthy of the extraordinary enthusiasm with which audiences greet them every night – from their first entrance right through to curtain call.”
Upon closing, the production will have played 26 previews and 70 regular performances.
Frankie and Johnny is the latest in a raft of summer closings. Since the June 9 Tonys, shows that have closed earlier than expected include Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus and Hillary and Clinton. Be More Chill and The Prom close Aug. 11, and Pretty Woman, King Kong and The Cher Show are bowing out Aug. 18.
