“Up in the frat house shit went down, and I’m telling everyone in town…”
It’s Christmas Eve and the Halloweenies are hanging out at Hawthorne College, where they’ve just been asked to attend the annual talent show at the Delta Kappa Omicron fraternity. Something is amiss, though, and it appears there’s a strange black liquid oozing from the campus statues. Also, where did the sisters of Mu Kappa Epsilon go?
Find out by revisiting Sophia Takal‘s 2019 remake of Black Christmas. Starring Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue, Brittany O’Grady, Caleb Eberhardt, and Cary Elwes, the Blumhouse slasher takes an ambitious detour away from Bob Clark’s iconic slasher whodunnit that set the bar for holiday horror back in 1974.
Join co-hosts Mac Gerber, Justin Gerber, and Mike Vanderbilt as they unwrap their thoughts on Takal’s vision alongside special guest Jenn Adams of The Losers’ Club/Psychoanalysis.

There’s a distinct daughters-of-Carol-Clover vibe in the new remake of Black Christmas that hits you almost immediately — a kind of knowingness with a serrated edge that’s different from the meta-winks of something like Scream, or the in-joke camaraderie that happens when horror franchise entries start getting into the double digits. It’s not just that its creators are familiar with the 1974 original, a proto-slasher flick involving a sorority house, a masked killer, the holiday season and a body count. (This vintage exploitation gem is also the answer to...

“Black Christmas,” meanwhile, launched with $230,000 in previews from 2,100 theaters.
Sony’s comedy sequel is expected to dominate the weekend with a studio forecast of about $35 million at 4,227 venues — nearly equal to the first weekend of 2017’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.” Rival forecasts are projecting a higher launch in the $45 million range.
Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan are reprising their roles from “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” with Awkwafina, Danny DeVito and Danny Glover joining the cast. The four teens from the first film are also returning.

This is the best version of Black Christmas to date with its needed social commentary, but it still isn't very scary.

Even though it was already remade in 2006, it makes a lot of sense that a movie like 1974’s Black Christmas would come around yet again in 2019. The story is about a group of female students terrorized in a sorority house, and because conversations of toxic masculinity and on-campus rape culture have become more prevalent at schools across the country in recent years, the scenario is inherently more volatile and socially relevant now than it was 45 years ago.
Director Sofia Takal uses the source material as a way of delivering pointed commentary on the challenges women face in a male-dominated world, more specifically, on college campuses. Toxic masculinity manifests itself in clever and innovative ways in Takal’s take on the slasher classic, with social commentary serving...

Dwayne Johnson’s “Jumanji: The Next Level” took in a solid $4.7 million at the Thursday previews, on its way to a $35 million opening weekend.
The first film, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” had an opening weekend of $35 million on a $90 million budget. Sony is projecting the sequel to open to $35 million as well — the film’s budget was $125 million.
To compare, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” took in $2 million when it had early showings on the Tuesday night before a Wednesday opening in 2017. Another good comparison is Johnson’s “Rampage,” also based on a game, that made $2.4 million on Thursday night before it opened to $35.7 million.

“Black Christmas” is the second remake of the 1974 slasher classic, which centers on a group of sorority sisters stalked by an unknown murderer. While the original had the female protagonists (Spoiler) offed, in this one, the women fight back.
“It’s been called a re-imagining of the original, and I think, in ways that the original was perhaps progressive for its time, [ours] is talking to the current audience now. There seems to be a really great opportunity to have a mainstream woman’s voice about crucial issues,” says star Imogen Poots.
Poots says working on a set of mostly women — from the cast to writer/director Sophia Takal and writer April Wolfe — allowed for candid conversations about those issues, including misogyny and violence against women, particularly on college campuses. The film also stars Cary Elwes, Aleyse Shannon and Lily Donoghue.

If the original 1974 “Black Christmas” had to obscure its feminism with subversion, subtlety, and a flirtatious Margot Kidder, the latest remake of the classic slasher film wears it proudly on its crop-top sleeve. When #MeToo launched an international conversation around rape and sexual assault in 2016, survivors breathed a collective sigh of relief that people finally believed them. Women knew about the domination of toxic male behavior for years; it didn’t take a genius to see that the calls were coming from inside the house.
In her gutsy and glossy remake, director Sophia Takal builds a timely horror out of the gaslighting and disbelief many survivors know all too well. Using the hyper-gendered spaces of college Greek life as a fertile palette, Takal and her co-writer April Wolfe skewer toxic masculinity, the white male literary canon, rape culture, patriarchy, and white male rage — all wrapped up with a bow in...

Last year, Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum got in a little trouble when it was discovered that none of the horror movies at his shingle had been directed by women — because, he said, “There are not a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror.”
After the inevitable backlash, he apologized with swift sincerity. Now he seems to be presenting “Black Christmas” as both penance and an amend.
Directed by indie auteur Sophia Takal (“Always Shine”), this burn-the-house-down remake really belongs in the midnight-movie section of a festival like Sundance or SXSW. As a wide release studio film nominally aimed at a multiplex audience, it feels strangely, if intriguingly, out of step.

We had the pleasure of chatting with Imogen Poots, Brittany O’ Grady, Lily Donoghue, Director Sophia Takal about their new movie, the horror remake of Black Christmas. Blumhouse is gearing up to try its hand at classic horror movies centered around holidays once more. Clearly buoyed by the success of last year’s Halloween, the studio is now getting ready to bring us their remake of 1974 slasher Black Christmas, which is set to be with us right in time for the holiday it’s named after.
For those unfamiliar with the original – and if you are, be sure to check it out – the plot revolves around a group of sorority girls who find themselves terrorized by a homicidal maniac during the holiday break. As they try to stay alive and keep safe, they soon learn that he’s much closer than they thought.

Earlier this year, Blumhouse announced that they would be crafting a new take on the 1974 classic, Black Christmas, just in time for the holiday season. And, as any horror fanatic can attest to, there’s no better way to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year than scream-filled jingles and murders under the fluorescent lights dressed on a pine tree.
With that said, the extent to which we’ll witness the gruesome butcherings of these college students has yet to be seen, as the film has officially been confirmed for a PG-13 rating. You can go ahead and check out the exact reasons why down below, but they, as expected, include violence, terror and sexual material.
Black Christmas is rated PG-13: for violence, terror, thematic content involving sexual assault, language, sexual material and drinking…with an open container on campus. Was actually PG until that.

The last Friday the 13th was one for the ages. No, we’re not talking about the dreadful 2009 remake of the horror classic. We quite literally mean Friday, September 13th. It was the first spooky calendar occurrence of 2019 and also happened to fall on a full moon, the 50th anniversary of Scooby-Doo and the day that fans celebrated the long-running series Supernatural.
For those who might’ve missed AMC’s all-day Friday the 13th marathon though, have no fear, as there’s another haunted holiday right around the corner. Shortly after Halloween, during which folks can experience even more horror on the movie channel, there will be another 13th of the month that falls at the end of the work week.
People online are now realizing that there’s one more Friday the 13th this year and it happens to fall in December, just a little less than two weeks before Christmas.

Scary movie powerhouse production company Blumhouse has already proved it knows how to handle holiday horror with its Hulu anthology series Into the Dark, but now things are going to get especially freaky on the big screen thanks to an upcoming reboot of Black Christmas.
The 2019 edition of the film follows the same basic plot as previous takes on the holiday nightmare, only with a handful of exciting new stars and a feminist twist. The action revolves around the fictional Hawthorne College, where a black-masked stalker begins brutally murdering Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters. But luckily a core group of them - Riley, Marty, Kris, and Jesse - aren't going to go down so easy. They vow not to be anybody's victims and prepare to fight back.
Black Christmas is likely the best gift horror movie fans could ask for come Dec. 13. Watch the trailer above!

After successfully teaming up for the “New Year, New You” episode of Hulu’s Into the Dark, producer Jason Blum and director Sophia Takal are reteaming to remake the horror classic Black Christmas. A staple of independent cinema for a decade now, Takal’s film follows up on her well-regarded episode and previous directorial outing Always Shine.
An early entry into the ever growing sub-genre of Christmas horror, Bob Clark’s 1974 Black Christmas concerned a group of sorority sisters who are stalked by menacing phone calls and a killer during the Christmas season. Takal’s film will be the second remake, following Glen Morgan’s ill-received 2006 Black Christmas.

Jason Blum is finally putting his money where his mouth is. After an unfortunate gaffe about the dearth of women horror directors landed him in hot water late last year, the producer backed actress-turned-filmmaker Sophia Takal’s third feature, a remake of Bob Clark’s 1974 horror classic “Black Christmas.” The recently released trailer teases a pro-sisterhood take on the original, which starred Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, and John Saxon and has long been hailed as one of the earliest examples of a slasher film. Takal’s version features Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Brittany O’Grady, Lily Donoghue, and Caleb Eberhardt.
For those unfamiliar with the story, here’s the official Blumhouse synopsis: “Hawthorne College is quieting down for the holidays. But as Riley Stone (Poots) and her Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters… prepare to deck the halls with a series of seasonal parties, a black-masked stalker begins killing sorority women one by one.

Based on the original Black Christmas from 1974, the film is about a group of sorority sisters of Mku (Mu Kappa Epsilon) stalked by a masked killer during the holidays. Why not. This new Black Christmas stars Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue, Brittany O'Grady, Caleb Eberhardt, Simon Mead, and Cary Elwes. This actually looks like a fun, brutal update of the original - with lots of ladies fighting back against this asshole holiday killer. Get ready for a bloody Christmas movie. Here's the...

Cary Elwes has been cast in Blumhouse’s remake of the 1974 holiday slasher horror thriller Black Christmas.
There aren’t any details on who Elwes will be playing, but it’s said that he plays a main part of the story. I like Elwes so it’s always great to see him land a new movie role. Hopefully, this one turns out to be a fun project for him.
He will join the previously cast Imogen Poots (Green Room), Aleyse Shannon, Brittany O’Grady, Lily Donoghue, and Caleb Eberhardt. Here’s the synopsis:

The 1974 holiday slasher film Black Christmas is getting the remake treatment thanks to Blumhouse, the studio that brought us Get Out and the new Halloween movie. While most people think that John Carpenter’s Halloween was the first slasher film, Black Christmas, which was directed by Bob Clark, actually came out four years prior.
The new remake will be directed by Sophia Takal, who directed the great indie horror-drama Always Shine. On top of that, Imogen Poots (Green Room) will star in the film. So, there’s a solid team of talent already attached, which is good. The movie will also star Aleyse Shannon, Brittany O’Grady, Lily Donoghue and Caleb Eberhardt.
The story focused on a group of sorority sisters who are targeted by an insane killer during Christmas. Everything starts out with strange and creepy phone calls from a stranger and it escalates into being stalked by the murderer and killed.

Blumhouse is once again trying its hand at classic horror films centered around holidays. Following the success of last year’s Halloween, the production company is now in the midst of remaking the 1974 slasher Black Christmas, which is scheduled to be released right in time for the holiday it’s named after.
The story follows a group of sorority girls who are being terrorized by a homicidal maniac during the holiday break. They try to keep themselves safe from the killer, but soon learn that he’s much closer than they thought. While the reimagining of the chilling tale is sure to pay homage to the original, there’s also expected to be quite a few twists along the way.
Black Christmas will star Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Brittany O’Grady, Lily Donoghue and Caleb Eberhadrt. Sophia Tokal, who starred in V/H/S, will direct from a script written with April Wolfe.

1974 holiday slasher Black Christmas is getting a modernized remake from horror auteurs Blumhouse, with Imogen Poots set to star.
Black Christmas, the 1974 killer cult classic and monstrously macabre holiday-themed precursor from the eventual director of A Christmas Story, Bob Clark, is getting a remake from the horror hub of Blumhouse Productions.
Universal Pictures is teaming with Blumhouse for a full-on remake of Black Christmas, and the creative coalition has already announced the headlining actress who’ll be playing the film’s (presumed) final girl, Imogen Poots. While this reimagining of the 1974 film is being described as “a bold new take,” putting the classic slasher through the lens of modern stylistic sensibilities, the project also sounds like it’s sticking to the premise of the original. Indeed, like that film, this project utilizes the old urban legend of “The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs,” with the added element...
