During a recent interview, the producer and director of the game shared some valuable information on the inspiration behind the title, as well as other aspects that are worth a read.

The PlayStation 5 exclusive, Rise of the Ronin, launched last month and has received mostly positive reviews from both gamers and critics. The game takes players to 19th-century Japan amidst the Boshin War and has been praised for its open world, fine-tuned combat, and more.
Rise of the Ronin also features several real-life historical figures of the 19th century that players come across during their playthrough and can interact with them as well. This has led to one unintentional crossover with one popular Sega game that is quite different from Team Ninja’s.

Bakumatsu refers to the final years of the Edo period when the Tokugawa shogunate ended, essentially bringing the finale to the samurai era of dominance. The period has been drawing the attention of Japanese cinema for decades, with a plethora of movies about the whole concept (Rurouni Kenshin is one of the most recent for example) particularly regarding the Shinsengumi. Chika Hashimoto presents a completely different take on the two concepts, by focusing her story on Hana Yamada, a girl who works in an office in modern Japan, but after a hit in the head, she finds herself in 1863 Edo.
