Bonnie Ferguson, Alex Proyas and Dean Kyrwood.
When Alex Proyas wrote the short film Mask of the Evil Apparition, he did not set out to evoke the tone of his 1998 sci-fi thriller Dark City, which was set in a nightmarish world with no sun.
But after filming for four days last week in Heretic Foundation, his new studio in Sydney’s inner west, the parallels are inescapable.
Bonnie Ferguson stars as Olivia, a young woman lost in a nocturnal, dreamlike city, with Dean Kyrwood as twin psychic brothers who try to help her find her way home as she is pursued by a shadowy cult known as The Mysterious Ones.
Alex King is Sandra, a young woman with a passion for disguise and mind games, and Goran D. Kleut portrays a roomful of identical characters.

Make-up artist Nick Nicolaou and Alex Proyas.
Alex Proyas has named his new film studio in Sydney’s inner west Heretic Foundation, symbolising his new approach to filmmaking.
“I want to smash the mold and build a new system to enable indie Aussie filmmakers,” says the director of The Crow, Dark City, I, Robot and Gods of Egypt.
“It’s soup to nuts production – everything from prep to shoot to post, edit, VFX, sound track lay and mix and colour grade.”
Located in Alexandria, the studio will house his new short film Mask of the Evil Apparition, which stars Bonnie Ferguson as Olivia, a young woman lost in a nocturnal, dreamlike city.
Dean Kyrwood will portray twin psychic brothers who try to help her find her way home as she is pursued by a shadowy cult known as The Mysterious Ones.

Dean Kyrwood will play psychic twin brothers in Alex Proyas’ surreal short film Mask of the Evil Apparition.
The first film to shoot at Proyas’ new self-contained studio in Sydney, it will star Bonnie Ferguson as Olivia, a young woman lost in a nocturnal, dreamlike city.
Antonio and his twin brother try to help Olivia find her way home but quickly realise she is being pursued by a shadowy cult known as The Mysterious Ones.
Although Antonio has the ability to psychically connect with the cult there is little he can do to protect her or himself from Olivia’s own evil supernatural twin.
It’s the filmmaker’s third collaboration with Ferguson, who appeared in his short Phobos and in a photographic exhibition. “I think Bonnie’s a star – a true film actor who can convey so much just with those incredible eyes,...

Bonnie Ferguson will play the lead in a short film from Alex Proyas, the first to shoot in his new self-contained studio in Sydney.
The working title is Mask of the Evil Apparition, it will shoot for three or four days late this month and premiere on the filmmaker’s YouTube channel Mystery Clock Cinema.
“It has all the attributes you’d expect from one of my madcap adventures,” Proyas said on his Facebook page.
“We shall be exploring virtual environments to create a dreamlike reality; a completely independent production, which points to the future of independent filmmaking. The techniques we discover with this short shall be used for full theatrical feature film production in due course.”
Bonnie plays the dual role of a character named Olivia who, she says, “is not as she seems.”

Alex Proyas.
Alex Proyas is building his own film studio in Sydney which will be home to his productions as well as those from other filmmakers.
The Gods of Egypt, Knowing and I, Robot director says the facility will serve as a think-tank for developing new technology and new ways to make films.
The sound-proofed studio will also function as a resource to foster next-wave auteurs through mentoring and workshops.
Providing regular updates on construction to followers of his YouTube channel Mystery Clock Cinema, he likens the facility to a permanent, virtual sets studio.
“As the technology becomes ever more affordable, the time is right to build something like this,” he says. “It’s not a huge space but it’s cleverly designed so you can do amazing stuff here.
“The crew numbers can be much reduced and the production can be streamlined to an astonishing degree.
