The Bau is back in action, but one familiar member of the team is still Mia. Matthew Gray Gubler, who played Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds for 15 seasons, won’t appear in season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, which premieres June 6 on Paramount+.

Criminal Minds wrapped up its decade-plus run on CBS in early 2020. But in 2022, the show was rebooted for a 16th season, dubbed Criminal Minds: Evolution. The 10-episode, streaming-only season featured the team – including David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), and Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) – working a complex case involving a serial killer named Elias Voit (Zach Gilford).
While Criminal Minds: Evolution brought back most of the show’s core cast, a few familiar faces were missing.

When Criminal Minds continued with Evolution two years after the original run ended after 15 seasons, it did so with nearly every actor from the series finale: Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), A.J. Cook (Jennifer “J.J.” Jareau), Kirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia), Aisha Tyler (Dr. Tara Lewis), Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez), and Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss). Scheduling didn’t work for Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney to reprise their roles as Dr. Spencer Reid and Matt Simmons. But will that change in Season 17? There has been at least one sign pointing to a possible return from Gubler: a photo of Spencer Reid’s nameplate on a desk in a photo shared on Mantegna’s Instagram story (see below). So TV Insider turned to showrunner Erica Messer for answers. As it turns out, unfortunately, we will not be seeing Gubler this season. Joe Mantegna/Instagram “It never worked out for Season 16 and...

In early 2024, the cast and crew of Criminal Minds: Evolution have finally begun the active phase of production, and filming has been quietly underway for months. So far, not much is known about the upcoming Season 2, except for the core cast members.
Nevertheless, Paramount never stops teasing us with new updates that, despite their lightheartedness, actually provide a lot of interesting details that fans actively start speculating about. For example, a new set video featuring the cast of Evolution was recently released, and despite its playful tone, the video was surprisingly insightful. Paramount has rebooted Criminal Minds, and starting in November 2022, we were once again immersed in the story of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) agents as they grappled with criminal minds and personal lives. Now, the story has taken an even darker turn, it has been released in a streaming format rather than the traditional TV broadcast one, and the show itself has been subtitled as Evolution. And before we knew it, a new season was already in production (the second season of Evolution and the seventeenth since Criminal Minds premiered on CBS in 2005).
While fans wait in anticipation, the upcoming Season 17 has already had its fair share of details and speculation. Josh Stewart, who has played Will Lamontagne Jr. since Season 2, will be leaving the show, while many are sure that everyone's favorite Spencer Reid will be back, as Matthew Gray Gubler's schedule has finally been cleared, and the...

Everybody loves a good procedural, right?
The drama, the cases, the suspense — there's something for everyone, and every week brings something new.
That doesn't mean the genre doesn't have a host of problems that newcomers to the scene should be aware of.
If new shows like Tracker want to succeed in competition with procedurals that have been on the air for years, they'll need to set themselves apart.
But how can Tracker's writers avoid some of the common complaints that get lobbed at procedural TV shows?
Invest in Character Development
One of the biggest issues fans have with procedural dramas is the lack of character development. Every episode brings something new to the show, leaving little time for the show's stars to shine.
Tracker has introduced several dynamic characters already, each of whom shows great potential. If the writers allow enough time for it, there's a ton of opportunity for...

We've been clamoring for more Criminal Minds since Criminal Minds Evolution Season 1 left us gasping due to its shocking revelations.
Despite scoring a speedy renewal, the long-running drama that morphed into a streaming series a year ago hasn't yet entered production.
Earlier this year, there was word that filming would begin imminently, so fresh episodes were on the air for fans quickly.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a standstill, meaning no new episodes could be produced.
Recently, both guilds reached deals with the AMPTP to fairly compensate writers and actors for their work, clearing the way for production to get underway.
Paget Brewster took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to respond to a fan to give some updates about the show and it's good news.

Elias said, "The Latin phrase Memento Mori translates to 'Remember that you must die.' Roman slaves whispered it to their generals to keep them from being consumed by hubris." That's as close as we got to a quote this week.
It fit the episode perfectly.
If they hadn't started the episode with that reflection of hubris, it would have been difficult to stomach the good guys' mistakes, which led to Rossi in a bunker and Tyler getting shot.
Those two men went above and beyond hubris in their quest to prove something to themselves.
As expected, Rossi's meet-n-greet with Sydney Voit was bountiful.
Sydney didn't have to lie about whether the man at the hardware store was her husband. She was so thrown that she just wanted to know where it was.

The Behavioral Analysis Unit isn’t done taking down serial killers, as Paramount+ has renewed Criminal Minds: Evolution for a second season.
Criminal Minds: Evolution was the revival of the long-running crime procedural series Criminal Minds, which came to an end in 2020. It didn’t take long for rumblings of a revival to emerge, and much of the original cast returned, including Joe Mantegna as David Rossi, Adam Rodriguez as Luke Alvez, A.J. Cook as Jennifer “JJ” Jareau, Aisha Tyler as Tara Lewis, Paget Brewster as Emily Prentiss, and Kirsten Vangsness as Penelope Garcia. Criminal Minds: Evolution recently returned to Paramount+ after a mid-season break, and now that the series has been renewed, production is expected to kick off on the new season later this year.

“Criminal Minds: Evolution” has been renewed for another season at Paramount+.
A revival of “Criminal Minds,” “Evolution” picked up where the series left off when it concluded on CBS in 2020 after 15 seasons. According to Paramount+, after premiering on Thanksgiving Day in 2022, the series went one to become one of the streamer’s top five originals and has driven the overall “Criminal Minds” franchise to see an increase of nearly six times in month-over-month viewership.
“We’re thrilled to bring even more twisted storylines to our loyal fans of ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ with the order of another season,” said Tanya Giles, chief programming officer of Paramount Streaming. “The series has always been a consistent top performer for Paramount+ and fans have quickly embraced this new season with its more serialized elements. A.J. Cook (Jennifer “JJ” Jareau) was right when she said fans needed to “prepare” themselves for the Criminal Minds: Evolution midseason finale (it left two of the profilers in serious peril!), but there are still another five episodes to come! And those episodes are going to lead to a “crazy” end to the season, Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez) promised TV Insider. “I think [Erica Messer and the writing team] were so excited to finally get a chance to do something that was truly serialized and still have the genius to keep it so that each episode in its own way could stand alone but it is all tied to this long arc, which wraps up in a pretty crazy way — so crazy that I would say it may not be the end of the road,” he teased. This season-long case brought tech genius Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) back to the...

Photo Credit: Michael Yarish /Paramount+ When the 15th season of Criminal Minds ended in 2020, Kirsten Vangsness felt pretty certain that would be the end of the show — after all, she’d co-written the finale with show-runner Erica Messer. Yet, here she is, and here the show is, back again for a new 10-episode run as Criminal Minds: Evolution, which picks up after the finale with many of the final season’s cast members returning. Vangsness told us that, after all of the emotion of saying goodbye to everyone nearly three years ago, she couldn’t believe her good fortune when Messer told everyone she’d come up with a new idea to continue the show. Anyone else grateful for the Bau this Thanksgiving? Turkey day was a red-letter day for Criminal Minds fans: The darkly wry procedural about the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit reunited its cast to launch a new iteration on Paramount+, making the case once again for its 15-season popularity. The instantly addictive Criminal Minds: Evolution — bringing back stars Joe Mantegna as Unit Chief David Rossi, Paget Brewster as Section Chief Emily Prentiss, Kirsten Vangsness as eccentric tech analyst Penelope Garcia, and A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler, and Adam Rodriguez as Supervisory Special Agents Jennifer “JJ” Jareau, Tara Lewis and Luke Alvez — picks up nearly three years after wrapping with the mostly intact team of profilers tracking a very organized madman (Zach Gilford) and his acolytes. Nicknamed “Sicarius” for the venomous spiders he employed in one murder, the unsub (later ID’d as Elias Voit) is the mastermind behind a decidedly antisocial network...

Midway through the first episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution, it becomes clear that Paramount+’s follow-up series won’t shy away from moments that are not 100-percent shiny and happy for the members of the Bau.
Take the scene where former team member Penelope Garcia (played by Kirsten Vangsness) videoconferences from home with unit chief David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), and challenges his theory that the person who abducted a teenage girl after slaughtering her parents is in his 30s or older.

For the cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution, shooting Paramount+’s limited series felt “very much the same, but different,” Joe Mantegna tells TVLine in the cast video above. “It was” — wait for it — “an evolution.”

As a title, Criminal Minds: Evolution refers not just to how a new UnSub upped his game during the pandemic, but also the changes that the series itself has undergone for its rebirth on Paramount+.
Reporting thus far on Criminal Minds: Evolution has regularly labeled it a “revival,” but having screened the first two episodes (of 10), I can attest that, yes, it is that. And then some. We catch back up with friendly faces still solving crime for the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, but the very familiar, predictable rhythms of the 42-minute procedural that aired on CBS for 15 seasons/320-plus episodes are gone,...

After fifteen seasons and 324 episodes, the long-running crime procedural series Criminal Minds came to an end in 2020… but it didn’t take long for rumblings of a revival to emerge. That revival has taken the form of Criminal Minds: Evolution, and Paramount+ have released the first trailer for the upcoming series.
Criminal Minds: Evolution sees the return of Joe Mantegna as David Rossi, Adam Rodriguez as Luke Alvez, A.J. Cook as Jennifer “JJ” Jareau, Aisha Tyler as Tara Lewis, Paget Brewster as Emily Prentiss, and Kirsten Vangsness as Penelope Garcia. This time around, the Behavioral Analysis Unit will be going up against “their greatest threat yet,” a network of serial killers who have been recruited during the pandemic by Elias Volt (Zach Gilford), an operations analyst at a global cybersecurity firm with a dark side and an obsession with death.

Very few procedural crime dramas have stood the test of time — the CBS series "Criminal Minds" concluded its incredible 15-season run in 2020 and has already received a revival order from the streamer Paramount+. Like showrunner-producer-writer Erica Messer said during the Television Critics Tour (via Deadline), the team behind "Criminal Minds" never wanted the show to end, and now they're coming back.
The crime drama told the story of a group of accomplished criminal profilers who worked for the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit and used their expertise to unearth the country's most dangerous minds, anticipating their next move before they could strike once again. The "Criminal Minds" revival, titled "Criminal Minds: Evolution," has already created an incredible buzz with audiences, thanks to six original cast members who are returning for the show. Don’t worry Criminal Minds fans: Members of the Bau who aren’t currently on board for Paramount+‘s sequel series Criminal Minds: Evolution aren’t “gone gone,” showrunner Erica Messer promised during the virtual Television Critics Association panel on September 21. “Our hope is that the team members that we ended the series with on CBS will be able to come back and play at some point,” she shared. While Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), A.J. Cook (Jennifer “J.J.” Jareau), Kirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia), Aisha Tyler (Dr. Tara Lewis), Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez), and Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss) are all back, Matthew Gray Gubler (Dr. Spencer Reid) and Daniel Henney (Matt Simmons) are not. “It’s a little bit more of a mystery what Reid and Simmons are up to. If you’re a fan of Criminal Minds and are looking to rewatch — or watch for the first time — ahead of the upcoming revival (with original stars returning), you have options to stream its 15 seasons. However, not every streamer on which it’s available has all the seasons. If you want to watch all 15 seasons, you can check them out on both Paramount+ (which will be home to the revival) and Hulu. If you don’t have either but do have Netflix, the first 12 seasons are now available again, after the show left the streamer at the end of June. These options are available ahead of the drama returning for a 10-episode revival on Paramount+. It was first announced as being in the works a year after the series ended its 15-season run on CBS in 2020. Filming has started, with Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), Paget Brewster(Emily Prentiss), A.J. Updated with Paramount+ confirmation, additional details: After more than a year of on- and off- dealmaking, Paramount+ on Thursday confirmed it has ordered to series a Criminal Minds revival starring six fan favorite cast members, Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster. As we previously reported, also back is the series’ longtime executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer who closed her deal to return earlier a couple of months ago. The actors’ contracts had been contingent on Messer signing a pact with ABC Signature where she is under an overall deal.
As Deadline reported exclusively, by February, Criminal Minds studios ABC Signature and CBS Studios had reached a license agreement with Paramount+ for a 10-episode new season of Criminal Minds. The last several months were spent getting Messer and the cast officially on board, triggering a formal green light, with production slated to begin Aug.

Deals are being made with Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), Kirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia), Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez), A.J.
