We have already reviewed one movie that emerged through the collaboration of Forest Ian Etsler and Sebastien Simon here in Asian Movie Pulse, and considering the rather unique approach of “The Troubled Troubadour” checking another of their work seemed like a rather interesting endeavor. Even more so, since “One-minded” seems to be their most successful one so far, screening in festivals all over the world and winning award from Chicago International and the Festival International de Programmes Audiovisuels Biarritz 2016.
“One-minded” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
A man who is sitting in the entrance of a block of flats watches two people who are obviously thieves, climbing down from a window of one apartment on a rope. Probably shocked but remaining cool, all he resorts in doing is offering one a cigarette, although in the end, their interaction remains minimal. In the next scene, a woman returns...

French filmmaker, festival programmer in Busan International Short Film Festival and guest professor of film editing at Dongseo University Sebastien Simon, follows on the experimental “The Troubled Troubadour” with a travelogue/documentary, once more shot in Busan, but this time in 3D (The review was based on the 2D version of the film).
A stranger arrives in Mipo, a place that used to be a fishing village located on the edge of Haeundae beach, in Busan, and starts recording the way the place looks now, after years of urban development have completely transformed the place into a stylish, tourist-attracting area. His recording, which occasionally transitions into low-fi footage (Super 8mm), shows both how the area looks now, with the Haeundae Blueline Park and Lct Towers dominating the scenery along with the train tracks, and how the area looked in the past, with the juxtaposition of the two highlighting the difference in the most eloquent way.

“One-Minded” is the type of short which is not so much intriguing on palpable quality alone, but rather through a reasonably unique, thoughtful approach to its artistic direction. Centred around an omniscient, oscillating fan in a cramped Korean apartment which bares resemblance to one utilised in the third instalment of “Paranormal Activity”, Sébastien Simon and Forest Ian Etsler’s bitesize effort enjoyed a sizeable run on the festival circuit, gaining praise for their seamlessly coordinated romantic comedy crime drama.
Ambitiously, Simon and Etsler thread multiple narratives into their bitesize offering’s plot. Told almost entirely from the perspective of the swaying fan, the viewer bears witness to a mini-heist, allusions of shower sex born out of a club hookup, and the premature return of a house owner from a failed business trip. Yet, there is so much more to “One-Minded”, such as the subtle commentary on the bliss of youthful exuberance,...
