Whether you love or hate them, remakes have been around for a long time, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. An update on The Crow is set to arrive this summer, with Hollywood’s version of Speak No Evil not far behind, just as two upcoming examples.
While not all remakes can hold a candle to the original, there’s been no shortage of fantastic movies that reworked genre favorites in thrilling new ways. Some of which even managed to eclipse the original classics, like 1986’s The Fly or 1982’s The Thing.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror remakes that set themselves apart from the source material, either through expanded storytelling or heightened, visceral horror.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

As the ’80s came to a close, so too did the first wave of the slasher cycle. While they would continue to be produced into the next decade, 1989 was the last gasp of a dying genre. Returning franchises and hopeful upstarts alike struggled to make an impact. We all know you can never really kill a slasher, but it would take Scream‘s reinvention of the concept in 1996 to renew broad interest.
Cutting Class, another ’89 entry in the subgenre, marked the directorial debut — and, as it turned out, sole directorial effort — from Rospo Pallenberg, who notably co-wrote Excalibur, contributed uncredited rewrites on Exorcist II: The Heretic, and served as a “creative associate” on Deliverance. Despite his pedigree, Pallenberg did not write the script; that was the work of Steve Slavkin, who would go on to create Nickelodeon’s pivotal series Salute Your Shorts.

Back in 1989, just a few years before he broke into the Hollywood A-list level, Brad Pitt starred alongside Donovan Leitch, Jill Schoelen, Roddy McDowall, and Martin Mull in the slasher movie Cutting Class – and Mvd Rewind Collection has announced that they will be celebrating the 35th anniversary of Cutting Class by giving the film a 4K release on January 16th!
Directed by Rospo Pallenberg from a screenplay written by Steve Slavkin, Cutting Class has the following synopsis: High school can be murder. Just ask Paula. Her overprotective father disappears during a weekend hunting trip. She’s being romantically pursued by Brian Woods, a creepy classmate who recently graduated from a mental institution. Her jealous jock boyfriend Dwight is looking for any reason to release his juvenile rage. We don't talk enough about how 1958's "The Blob" and 1988's remake makes for one of the best original/remake combinations. They're both time capsules of societal paranoias from their respective eras. One is about a Pleasantville town banding together to defeat an outsider invader — the next is a government conspiracy flick about corruption within official departments. The '50s film plays around with a cranberry jelly-lookin' monster and cutting-edge photography tricks of the time that could manage such freaky sci-fi effects, while the '80s update enlists future SFX gurus like Tony Gardner to pull off awe-striking gelatinous carnage. Director Chuck Russell helped shape the future of practical-driven horror, showing what all-star craftsmanship can accomplish that digital animation will never touch.
In 1988's "The Blob," multiple scenes douse viewers with buckets of heebie-jeebies. Russell's Blob is a man, woman, and child eater that disintegrates flesh with its acidic slime — and we see it all.

John Travolta and Bruce Willis reunite after their limited shared screen time in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Both stars were prolific action icons in the 90s, and for some time now, both have had second careers with straight-to-video type movies with an occasional theatrical release. Their re-pairing comes in the new film Paradise City.
Scenic locations in Hawaii serve as the settings in Paradise City. So, there’s no doubt that the grass is green and the girls are pretty. People has reported on the release of the trailer, which proudly boasts that the film is “John Travolta vs. Bruce Willis.” Willis looks to be more of a presence in this more than his other recent credited films, although it looks as if a small ensemble will help him carry the load. He’s joined by Stephen Dorff, Blake Jenner, and Praya Lundberg.
The official synopsis reads,

Though their “’80s Horror” lineup would constitute enough of a Halloween push, the Criterion Channel enter October all guns blazing. The month’s lineup also includes a 19-movie vampire series running from 1931’s Dracula (English and Spanish both) to 2014’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, the collection in-between including Herzog’s Nosferatu, Near Dark, and Let the Right One In. Last year’s “Universal Horror” collection returns, a 17-title Ishirō Honda retrospective has been set, and a few genre titles stand alone: Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The House of the Devil, and Island of Lost Souls.
Streaming premieres include restorations of Tsai Ming-liang’s Vive L’amour and Ed Lachman’s Lou Reed / John Cale concert film Songs for Drella; October’s Criterion editions are Samuel Fuller’s Forty Guns, Bill Duke’s Deep Cover, Haxan, and My Own Private Idaho. Meanwhile, Ari Aster has curated an “Adventures...
