Writer-producer Harry Sachdeva’s dramatic thriller ‘31st October’ set against the backdrop of the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom, which had released last week, has been declared tax-free by the Punjab Government. The government took this decision after taking in consideration the bold step taken by the makers of the film to throw light on the darkest day in the country’s history, the victims of which are yet to get justice from the Indian judiciary.
The film, which stars Vir Das and Soha Ali Khan, was not only lauded in India, but had also garnered appreciation from across the globe in its depiction of the gruesome riots and the bond of friendship and brotherhood between communities. The film revolved around the struggle for survival of a Sikh family trapped in a riot zone in New Delhi in the aftermath of the anti-Sikh riots following the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Writer-producer Harry Sachdeva, whose dramatic thriller ‘31st October’ starring Vir Das and Soha Ali Khan released this weekend, had organized a special screening of the film for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other MLAs and reportedly, the film got a majorly positive response from everyone.
Confirming the same, Harry said, “I am extremely honored that the Cm took time to watch 31st October. His government in Delhi is taking some right steps to address the issue of the delayed justice to victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom and I want the support of both State and Central Government to ensure that at least now the victims get justice. His appreciation of the film matters a lot and I am happy to see him moved as the film ended.”

I was very young on the day Mrs Indira Gandhi died. I remember the nationwide horror of losing a beloved leader and how it was overshadowed by the horror of watching Sikhs being dragged out on the streets and burnt alive for the ghastly assassination.
I remember everyone said, ‘How can the country go on without her?’
But it did. History of genocide has a way of repeating itself, unless we learn from the mistakes we make in the past. So here we are 32 years later looking at a film that recreates the chilling carnage of an innocent community made vulnerable by the crimes of a few.
The film made with touching earnestness, opens on the morning of October 31 depicting an ordinary day in the life of an affable Sikh family. The cut-and-dried treatment of the film,...

Upcoming dramatic thriller ‘31st October’, which revolves around a Sikh family’s struggle for survival during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, has been facing issues ever since the film went on floors and a few days before the release of the film, the makers are yet to heave a sigh of relief.
Not only is the film facing challenges in courts (a Pil seeking ban on the film was recently filed at the Delhi High Court), but it now seems that a scene from the film, which ostensibly hints at the involvement of senior Congress leaders in the riots, has been leaked, causing much opposition to the film from various quarters. Now, frustrated with such obstacles in the path of the film’s release, the makers of the film have launched a social media campaign with the hashtag #IStandWith31stOctober, through which the makers aim to garner public support on social media.

Soha Ali Khan and Vir Das' next release 31 October is in Censor trouble. The film was recently submitted to the Board for certification. However, they have raised objections on certain scenes. "The makers are considering the changes that have been suggested but since these are integral to the film's narrative, they are trying to figure out how to go about it," informs our source, "They can't afford to lose the core essence of the film by incorporating any random cuts." All of this would mean that the film may not really make it for its October 30 release. "The timing is the key here," a trade source adds, "For 31 October to release; there couldn't have been a better date than October 30. It is as timely as it gets. However, this date is now being challenged." 31 October is being pitched as the first mainstream film ever based on the assassination of...
