Stars: Randy Couture, Kathleen Kenny, Reid Miller, Mike Manning, Bonnie Aarons, Chaz Bono, Cathy Marks | Written by Joe Davison, Luke Genton | Directed by Colton Tran
When the opening scene ended with a pretty cool and gory death, in what was a traditional but fun slasher film build-up, my hopes were kind of high. It feels like we have had very few new slasher movie villains to get excited about. Of course, Michael Myers, Chucky, Ghostface and more are still going strong but other than Art the Clown in the Terrifier franchise, no one seems to have lasted for more than one movie in more recent times. So when Randy Couture is standing tall as Hank, giant axe in hand, things were looking up. But the movie doesn’t quite pan out the way I was expecting.
The Bell Keeper follows a group of friends, including two brothers, who travel to a campsite at Lake Bell.

M. Night Shyamalan returns to theaters in August with new thriller Trap (watch the trailer here), but first up we’re getting the feature debut of his daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.
Director Ishana Night Shyamalan’s (“Servant”) horror movie The Watchers is coming to theaters on June 14, 2024, and New Line Cinema has released a brand new trailer today.
This full trailer for The Watchers gives us a much better idea of what’s going on here, while still retaining the core mystery at the center of the film. All we really know is that there’s a building in the center of the woods that’s observed on a nightly basis by… someone. Or something.
These mysterious creatures watch a group of humans like their own twisted version of reality TV. “No one sees them and survives,” one character states. A different character says, “They have come to our world for a reason,...

This past week, the anticipated horror, ‘Immaculate’ had its theatrical release nationwide. After the initial premiere at South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, the film was met with a mix of reviews but a positive response overall. No matter what one may think of the film, ‘Immaculate’ has transformed producer and leading actor, Sydney Sweeney, into a scream queen for the new generation.

Between The Nun II, Sister Death, Consecration, the upcoming The First Omen, and the newly released Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, it’s safe to say that nuns are having a moment in horror. So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.
In Häxan (1922), possessed nuns mingle with witches as director Benjamin Christensen explores the connection between mental health and mass hysteria. With movies like Alucarda (1975), Ms. 45 (1981), and St. Agatha (2018), the subgenre of nunsploitation comes into play to further explore themes of religious and sexual oppression.

The German legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the basis of two recent horror productions. The first of these “twin films” to receive a wide release is Erlingur Thoroddsen’s take, which shares the same title as Anthony Waller’s adaptation. And although both reimaginings feature demonic updates of that famous ratcatcher, only Thoroddsen’s story appears to underscore the musical component.
The Piper finds Charlotte Hope’s (The Nun) character Mel trapped in a familiar situation: her aspirations come at a great cost, and the consequences will be harmful. Here the young composer wants a future in her orchestra ensemble as well as the means to take care of her deaf daughter (Aoibhe O’Flanagan). Stealing a concerto from the estate of her recently departed mentor (Louise Gold) seems like the only option, but once the protagonist goes through with the plan, Mel’s conductor (Julian Sands) then...

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

2023 was a banner year for horror films from across the globe, which deserve just as much praise and attention as any domestic genre triumph.
In a year that’s had its share of ups and downs at the box office, horror continues to be a top performer and one of the most consistent sources of entertainment. Superhero fatigue continues to set in and the ballooning budgets of major studio blockbusters have started to seem more like a curse than a kindness. The film industry adapts accordingly and figures out what audiences want.
However, horror movies have never been more popular and 2023 has been a goldmine of blood, guts, and gore. This year alone has featured grandiose franchise sequels like Scream VI, Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, and Saw X. Even Hercule Poirot has gotten into the horror game with A Haunting in Venice. Additionally, weird and wild local horror releases like Skinamarink,...

The American Broadcasting Company aired its iconic series ABC Movie of the Week from 1969 to 1975. In the intro of Michael Karol’s book The ABC Movie of the Week Companion: A Loving Tribute to the Classic Series, the author called the anthology show “influential” for baby-boomers. Karol then went on to quote a press release from Barry Diller; ABC’s vice president at the time said the network was trying to “broaden the base of familiar television anthologies and movies-for-television” and how a 90-minute format would “do justice to that special echelon of story ideas, which don’t quite work in the standard one-and two-hour television program forms.” The concept also entailed working with production companies outside of their own (ABC-Circle Films), including frequent collaborator Spelling-Goldberg. And as many fans of vintage American tele-cinema will agree, one of Spelling-Goldberg’s, not to mention ABC’s most memorable TV-movies from that...

Six years after the success of the Spanish-language horror film Veronica on Netflix, Rec director Paco Plaza returns with a similarly spine-chilling prequel. Set in post-civil-war Spain, Sister Death follows the tale of a young novice named Narcisa who has just joined a new convent. She has some supernatural gifts and is something of a miracle girl in those parts. Now, she finds herself questioning her piety and her “vision” in this new school for young girls. Sister Death is definitely eerie and has its visually arresting moments, with some stunning cinematography. Sister Death definitely takes the cake when it comes to the best Nun of the year, though. In 2017, Veronica was a beast of a film, becoming overhyped with the title “scariest movie ever”. Personally, I didn’t watch it back then because it felt like it would be disappointing. On the contrary, I quite enjoyed the film, if...

Five years after the Conjuring Universe entry The Nun wracked up almost $366 million at the global box office, a sequel finally reached the big screen on September 8th. At the start of this month, The Nun II was given a digital release (you can get it at This Link). Now Deadline reports that the movie will be streaming on the Max service just in time for Halloween! The Nun II will be available to watch on Max as of October 27th.
The sequel didn’t replicate the box office success of the first film, but it still did quite well. As of this writing, The Nun II has earned over $257 million worldwide.
The Nun II is directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and the writing duo of Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing (The Autopsy of Jane Doe). The film has the following synopsis: 1956 – France. A priest is murdered.

The Michael Chaves directed sequel in the Conjuring universe opened to $32.6M and through yesterday counts $84.4M at the domestic box office and over $258M worldwide. Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Nun and The Nun II.
Of all the supernatural beings in The Conjuring Universe, few are as purely evil as the Nun (Bonnie Aarons). This supernatural entity is a demon known as Valak who takes different forms in order to exploit the weaknesses of its targeted victims. The sinister Nun first appears in The Conjuring 2 as a harbinger of death. As the franchise has spiraled, Valak has turned out to be the root cause of much of the underlying possessions connected to the Warrens and their paranormal investigations.

As someone who actually likes "The Nun" (insert "There are dozens of us!" gif here), I'm pleased to see the sequel to the Conjuring Universe spin-off doubling down on its predecessor's approach of, to paraphrase /Film's Jacob Hall, feeling like the greatest Hammer Horror tabletop role-playing game that's never been made. Directed by Conjuring Universe veteran Michael Chaves, "The Nun II" sees the titular demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons) getting back in the habit of terrorizing the world of the living. Taissa Farmiga is also back as Sister Irene, though Demián Bichir is noticeably absent as Father Burke, a character who we learn sadly died from cholera in between films early on in the "Nun" sequel.
Not bringing Burke back for "The Nun II" makes sense enough from a creative perspective. Between the character's relatable trauma from the events in his past and Bichir's compelling, understated performance, a grounded protagonist like...

For the first time since her original Conjuring Universe spinoff movie in 2018, modern horror icon Valak is back up on the big screen in The Nun II, now playing in theaters nationwide.
Here in the United States, The Nun II debuted with $32.6 million in 3,728 theaters, while the horror sequel’s worldwide debut brings the film to $85.3 million in just a matter of days.
The Nun II is sure to cross $100 million worldwide later this week, which will make it yet another financial success for the long-running, billion dollar Conjuring Universe franchise.
But how does The Nun II‘s opening weekend stack up against its predecessor? Back in 2018, The Nun debuted to $53.8 million here in the United States, and it went on to become the most financially successful movie in the entire Conjuring Universe to date. The original movie’s worldwide total reached $365.5 million, a high The Nun II will also aspire to reach.

Denzel Washington is no match for this sister.
“The Nun II” topped the box office charts, earning a scary good $32.6 million this weekend from 3,728 locations. That was more than enough to topple Sony’s “The Equalizer 3,” which features Washington as a mysterious avenging angel, from the first place perch it held last weekend. “The Equalizer 3” racked up over $12.1 million in its second weekend to push its domestic gross to $61.9 million. Globally, the action sequel crossed $100 million at worldwide box office, bringing its haul to $107.7 million.
Though impressive, “The Nun II,” which is the ninth chapter in Warner Bros.’ ongoing “Conjuring” series, couldn’t match the high-water mark set by its 2018 predecessor “The Nun,” which opened with $53.8 million. The film sees Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons return as Sister Irene and the titular Nun, respectively, with newcomers to the franchise, Jonas Bloquet, Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell, rounding out...

Now that we're nine films into the Conjuring Universe, the series has more or less established a groove for itself, especially where the films' scares are concerned. For the main "Conjuring" films, the scares are "Exorcist" and "Poltergeist"-esque, built around the demon ghosts that Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) encounter as they try to vanquish them. For the spin-off series like the "Annabelle" movies and "The Curse of La Llorona," the titular demon characters act much like franchise slasher villains like Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees, stalking and murdering their prey through various means.
"The Nun" films are no exception to this rule, as the latest entry, "The Nun II," features the Demon Nun (Bonnie Aarons) stalking and killing her innocent victims using everything from good old-fashioned neck-breaking to spontaneous combustion. Yet these "kill scenes" are only a portion of the whole film, as every...

"The Conjuring 2" opens with Ed and Lorraine Warren investigating the infamous Amityville house at 112 Ocean Avenue to determine whether or not a demonic presence caused Ronald DeFeo Jr. to commit familial annihilation and the subsequent supernatural events that plagued the Lutz family after they moved into the home. The couple holds a seance and Lorraine is thrust into a terrifying vision where she encounters a demonic nun.
The Nun appears multiple times throughout the film, until Lorraine rightfully addresses it as Valak, a shape-shifting demon, and condemns it back from which it came. James Wan didn't intend for Valak to be such a major player in The Conjuring Universe — honestly, "The Conjuring" was never supposed to spawn a cinematic universe but the fans demanded it — and didn't originally intend for the demon to take the shape of a nun. I'm probably in the minority here, but I'll take "The Nun" over "The Nun II" any day. Corin Hardy's 2018 Conjuring Universe spinoff starring Valak as the franchise's popular demon of the cloth was the first entry that felt like it wasn't trying to imitate James Wan's style. Notes of gothic vibes and Hammer horror imbued a sense of individuality into "The Nun," which eventually became one of the Conjuring Universe's most financially successful films despite poor reception from critics and audiences alike. There are dozens of us who appreciate "The Nun" and will champion its misunderstood glory, one "Scariest Scene Ever" article at a time.

James Wan has created a handful of fan favorite villains in the past 20 years, with characters such as Jigsaw and Annabelle becoming modern day horror icons. And then there’s Valak, a demonic nun that was first introduced in The Conjuring 2. Played by Bonnie Aarons, the character proved to be so memorable that she quickly got her own spinoff movie back in 2018.
The Nun ended up becoming the most financially successful installment in the entire Conjuring Universe, and here we are in 2023 with a brand new sequel now playing in theaters.
But this time around, Valak isn’t staying up on the big screen…
Horror movies and viral marketing campaigns go hand-in-hand, and Warner Bros. has teamed up with Triple Play for a digital campaign they’re calling “#ISawANun“.
Picture this: surveillance videos that capture heart-pounding jump scares and eerie sightings of a mysterious ‘Nun’ from different corners of the globe.

10 years ago, horror maestro James Wan released a film about the real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren called "The Conjuring," which has since spawned into its own horrifying cinematic universe. The first spin-off was "Annabelle," a possessed-doll movie inspired by the real-life doll residing in the Warrens' home and Occult Museum in 1970. Then, during "The Conjuring 2," Wan introduced the demon Valak, who took the form of a terrifying Nun to terrorize Lorraine.
Played by Bonnie Aarons (who is currently suing for not being fairly compensated for how much merchandise has been made using her likeness as the character), The Nun was so effectively scary that fans begged for a solo spin-off, which came in 2018 with "The Nun." While The Conjuring Universe has no shortage of spooky figures, the Nun is almost universally understood as the creepiest of the bunch.

The following contains major spoilers for "The Nun II."
Fire is one of the most potent and common elements seen in religious iconography, for very good reasons. It not only turns up as a representative of God in the Jewish and Christian faiths (the infamous "burning bush" seen by Moses), it also acts as a catch-all symbol for faith itself. Fire can be seen as an agent of purification, burning away sin and corruption. It can also be seen as a perpetual force that represents the staunch power of one's belief, often in the form of a lit candle.
It's no surprise, then, that fire is all over "The Nun II," literally and metaphorically. The movie is the 9th in the film series The Conjuring Universe, movies that began as fictionalized adaptations of the life and times of demon hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga...

We never thought we’d be writing about another supposed Conjuring film, but lo and behold, 10 years into the franchise, it isn’t taking a pause just yet. The Nun 2 has just been released and is garnering a mixed reaction from fans. The film, set four years after the first Nun film, is, in a sense, a prequel to 2013’s The Conjuring. The Conjure-verse (we just made that up; don’t come at us) consists of eight films, but don’t be mistaken by The Curse of La Llorana, which was not, in fact, a part of the universe, but a stand-alone film and has created a huge reputation for itself in the horror world.
It’s impossible for horror fans not to mention The Conjuring when talking about their beloved genre, whether in a good or bad way, because the films have been everywhere for the last 10 years.

It says a lot about the history of nunsploitation cinema that “The Nun II,” which opens with a scary ghost nun levitating a priest and setting him spectacularly on fire, is one of the more understated entries in the genre.
That’s not to say “The Nun II” is a subtle film, or a thoughtful film, or even a good film. It’s just that when you share space on the video store shelf with Ken Russell’s “The Devils” and Bruno Mattei’s “The Other Hell,” a bunch of cheesy random jump scares wrapped around a tepid storyline just doesn’t stand out much.
Even compared to Corin Hardy’s first “The Nun” movie — itself the fifth entry in the “Conjuring” franchise, with “The Nun II” now the ninth — Michael Chaves’s sequel is a major step down. Hardy’s stylish horror adventure was energetic enough to entertain despite its egregious silliness.

Now on its ninth feature entry in just a decade, the “Conjuring” franchise has proved something of a powerhouse in the continued growth of horror as one of the most reliably popular (not to mention cost-effective) mainstream film genres. Their mythologies may be garbled and silly, the scares mostly “jump” ones, yet these movies provide a kind of creepy comfort food — familiarly formulaic jolts unlikely to trouble any non-child viewer’s sleep later on — whose satisfactions are amplified by the good actors and superior atmospherics deployed.
Defying the law of diminishing returns, 2018’s spinoff “The Nun” was (and so far remains) the franchise’s biggest hit to date. Ergo enter “The Nun II,” a direct sequel. In some respects an improvement on its predecessor, in others not, this is finally one more good-enough if unmemorable entry sure to extend the series’ life in lucrative fashion.

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Conjuring franchise, it’s fascinating to note that The Nun was released almost exactly five years ago to the day The Nun 2 is set to hit the screens. Amidst the various malevolent entities that Ed and Lorraine Warren have confronted, one figure stands out as the most chilling—simply known as The Nun. This unsettling evil presence has become iconic ever since it first graced the screen. What’s intriguing is that the nun’s sinister history dates back further than many might realize, making it essential for die-hard fans of The Conjuring universe to keep up with the lore. However, fear not if you’ve lost touch with the franchise, because if you’re eager to dive into the new film and want a quick refresher, we’ve got you covered with the key details you need to know before...

Stand back, Marvel Cinematic Universe. Be gone, DC Extended Universe. The power of The Conjuring Universe compels you!
It may astonish those who aren't horror fans or haven't been paying attention, but 2013's "The Conjuring" has not only spawned two direct sequels, but two entire spin-off film franchises that are still going strong: the "Annabelle" series and "The Nun" films. In fact, the latter's latest installment — oh-so-helpfully entitled "The Nun II" — is due to haunt theaters everywhere on September 8, 2023.
If you can't quite recall where and when we last saw the only married demonologist team in the tri-county area, Ed and Lorraine Warren, or if you're having trouble separating your La Lloronas from your Valaks, fear not! The following will not only get you up to speed with the ghouls, demons, and ghosts of The Conjuring Universe, but it will also lay out the tangled timeline of the entire series in chronological order.

The demon Valak, aka The Nun, is among the most infamous faces in "The Conjuring" universe. Aside from perhaps the doll Annabelle, Valak's image looms over the franchise more than any other. According to a lawsuit put forth by actress Bonnie Aarons (via The Hollywood Reporter), who played the character in "The Conjuring 2," "The Nun," and "The Nun 2," the character shows up on official merch a lot, too. Now, Aarons is asking for a cut of royalties she says she's owed, alleging via a suit obtained by THR that Warner Bros. has been exploiting her "talent, creativity, and likeness."
"The Princess Diaries" and "Mulholland Drive" actress is reportedly suing Warner Bros, New Line Cinema, and Scope Productions for breach of contract, citing a clause in her contract that ensured her a "pro-rata share" on all merch with her likeness, which her suit alleges has included "toys, dolls, decorations,...
