It’s been a minute since we checked in on Máximo, old and young, and Las Colinas. Actually, it’s been like 16 months in the real world, which is why it was a wise choice for the “Acapulco” Season 3 trailer to open with the exposition it did.
Máximo (Eugenio Derbez): “Hugo, do you remember where my rags-to-riches life story left off? It all started with a job as Las Colinas. I told you about my big promotion and Julia and I getting together — but there’s still so much more I haven’t told you.”
Smash Cut To: Season 2’s big cliffhanger moment. Oh that’s right, (old) Máximo has a grownup daughter we didn’t even know about. The trailer doesn’t really get into that storyline, but certainly the season will.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Acapulco Season 2, Episode 10, “Against All Odds.”] One of TV’s most delightful series has concluded its second season as Acapulco‘s latest episode, “Against All Odds,” arrived on Apple TV+, and with it, one major cliffhanger. As Season 2’s 1980s-set storyline saw Máximo (Enrique Arrizon) repair his relationships at Las Colinas after he was caught sharing secrets with Fabian Solares (Bayardo De Murguia), host of the celebrity gossip program Espectacular. Everyone who was ever going to watch “Ted Lasso” has probably done it already. Somewhere deep in the server room at Apple HQ, there’s probably some algorithm for wringing some extra subset of subscribers out of the phenomenon that “Ted Lasso” has been for audiences and awards voters. It’s the kind of effort that makes you wonder what Apple TV+ would do if they had a show ready to duplicate that kind of success.
Except you don’t have to wonder. They already do.
This week brings Season 2 of “Acapulco,” a comedy that’s been right next to that soccer show on the platform since it premiered last fall. It’s a story told in two parallel tracks. During the most recent season of MTV’s competition program “The Challenge,” subtitled “Spies, Lies & Allies,” the competitors initially had to work in pairs, despite major language barriers among them.
In these games, veteran players from past seasons of “The Challenge” compete against vets of other series including “Survivor,” “Big Brother” and “Love Island” from around the world. Everyone must speak at least a little English, casting director Skye Topic says, or it wouldn’t be fair, since host T.J. Lavin gives them the rules of each challenge in English. But because “we envision the show as a place where it’s an intersection of societies,” she says, they are leaning into bringing in global players, including those from Germany, Turkey, Romania, Spain and Nigeria in this season alone.

Technically, “Acapulco” starts at the end. On a sunny, cloudless afternoon in Southern California, Maximo Gallardo (Eugenio Derbez) takes in his view of the Pacific from a sprawling estate. On a day off from his life as a financial mogul, Maximo welcomes his nephew Hugo (Raphael Alejandro) for a relaxing kickback. In celebrating his young relative’s birthday, Maximo regales him with the tale of his own teenage days, working at the luxury Las Colinas resort in Acapulco, Mexico.
As the show judiciously cuts back and forth between present-day and 1984, Maximo slowly introduces his younger self (Enrique Arrizon) amidst a sea of family members and coworkers. Childhood friend Memo (Fernando Carsa) helps him navigate life at Las Colinas, as he pines after hopeless crush Julia (Camila Perez), contends with rivals Hector (Rafael Cebrián) and Chad (Chord Overstreet), and does his best to impress the resort’s manager (Damián Alcázar) and...

When wide-eyed, ambitious Maximo (Enrique Arrizon) looks at the gleaming pink hotel that’s overlooked Acapulco his entire life, he sees opportunities and riches he can’t get anywhere else in his town circa 1984. He sees a way out of poverty, a chance to dream, an escape from the mundane. When his mother (Vanessa Bauche) looks at Las Colinas, however, she sees not just a den of sin, but a nest of sirens that will lure her children away for the superficial glory of serving white tourists who will forget their waitstaff the moment they fall out of view.
In “Acapulco,” a new Apple TV Plus comedy from Austin Winsberg, Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman, the truth lies somewhere in between. As a Las Colinas pool boy, Maximo’s natural instincts and charm quickly make him a hotel staple, which helps him towards his goal of funding his mother’s eye surgery.
