When it was released in 2022, The Russo Bros.' spy thriller "The Gray Man," based on the 2009 novel by Mark Greaney, boasted the largest budget of any Netflix film to date, costing the studio about $200 million. "The Gray Man" was a flippant action flick that starred Ryan Gosling as a skilled CIA assassin nicknamed Sierra Six, after the ultra-secret Sierra program that trained him. Sierra Six, on an early mission, learns from the now-independent Sierra Four (Callan Mulvey) that there may be some active corruption or malfeasance in the Sierra program, and goes rogue, searching for the truth. Six's boss Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) hires the kooky, ultra-violent Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) to track him down. Ana De Armas also appears as a CIA agent named Dani Miranda.

We love watching Chris Evans in romantic comedies. In villainous roles. In action thrillers. And soon, in crime dramas. The actor has dabbled in distinct projects, more so since stepping away from his superhero responsibilities. He was recently seen playing the egocentric sociopath Lloyd Hansen alongside Ryan Gosling in Netflix's "The Gray Man."
Lately, Evans has joined a new production alongside award-winning actress Emily Blunt, a crime drama film titled "The Pain Hustlers," which Netflix acquired global rights to during this year's Cannes Film Festival. “The Gray Man” is officially a franchise.
Just days after its premiere on the streaming platform, the Russo brothers-directed spy thriller has already locked in both a sequel and a spin-off. After “The Gray Man,” starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, debuted at the number one slot on Netflix, the platform has greenlit two new projects tied to the success. “The Gray Man” saw star Evans play sociopathic assassin Lloyd Hansen, who is hired to hunt down CIA mercenary Courtland Gentry, aka Sierra Six (Gosling), after a security breach.
IndieWire can confirm that “Netflix is cementing plans for the IP to become a major spy franchise,” starting with a direct sequel starring Gosling with directors Joe and Anthony Russo set to helm the project. The Russos and Agbo’s Mike Larocca will produce along with Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum for Roth Kirschenbaum Films. “The Gray Man” co-writer Stephen McFeely is writing the sequel.

Ryan Gosling is calling it like it is. The Notebook star was recently asked about a line in his new Netflix film The Gray Man where he mocks co-star Chris Evans' mustache, calling his facial hair a "trash 'stache." When The Hollywood Reporter asked Ryan for his real thoughts on Chris' mustache during the July 13 world premiere in Hollywood, he simply replied, "Those were my real thoughts." Regé-Jean Page, the breakout star from the first season of “Bridgerton,” could be a great James Bond, according to the Russo Brothers, who directed him in Netflix film “The Gray Man.”
In an interview with the U.K.’s Radio Times, the Russos were asked about persistent rumors linking Page to the role of James Bond. Joe Russo said: “He’s fantastic. I mean, he has more charisma in his pinky than most people do in their entire body. So you know, we’d watch him do anything — I mean we’d watch him read the phonebook!”
Anthony Russo added: “[He’s a] very savvy performer and [has] so much charm.”
In “The Gray Man,” Page plays suave CIA boss Denny Carmichael, who employs former agent turned private contractor Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) to bring down agent Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling), who is in possession of explosive secrets.

There’s a moment in The Gray Man, the new movie from Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo, in which hell is breaking loose outside a building in Prague (it’s hard to keep track of all the globetrotting in this movie). The building is blowing up; there are heavily armed assassins and local security forces shooting each other to pieces in the square outside; and soon a city tram is hurtling off its tracks and crashing through more vehicles while demolishing a whole city block.
All I could think was: Wouldn’t this rise to the level of an international incident? Yet for the film’s main character, played stoically by Ryan Gosling, and the person helping him, played with as much verve as can be mustered by Ana de Armas, it’s just an excuse to dust themselves off and head to the next set piece.

Ryan Gosling stars and Chris Evans slouches throughout “The Gray Man,” an expensive (and expensive-looking) Netflix-produced action caper that sets the two marquee-topping actors against each other for instantly forgettable reasons.
Co-directed by “Avengers: Endgame” helmers Anthony and Joe Russo (who adapted a script from Mark Greaney’s novel with Stephen McFeely) “The Gray Man” pits Gosling’s quippy but otherwise stoic CIA hitman against Evans’s frantic (and therefore only ostensibly menacing) government contractor.
Both performers coast on their by-now well-established personas and respective assets – the Russos seem especially invested in highlighting Evans’s biceps and hips – but Gosling projects enough confidence and charm to make you want to keep watching.

One reason Jessica Henwick wanted to join Netflix's newest action movie, "The Gray Man," was because of its "stellar lineup of actors," she tells Popsugar. The two people she got to work most closely with on the set of the Russo Brothers' film were Chris Evans and "Bridgerton" breakout Regé-Jean Page. Henwick and Page are both British and play Americans in the film, but they went about preparing for their roles pretty differently.
Page, Henwick says, stayed in an American accent the entire time they were filming. "We got along like a house on fire, and it was only when we finished filming that he broke his American accent, and then I realized our entire relationship was a lie," she jokes. "I never stay in character. As soon as the camera has cut, I'm back to speaking like [with my normal accent], whereas he would maintain it from getting in the car till leaving.

A hyper-caffeinated blend of the the Jason Bourne and John Wick films told through the colorful, bloodless filter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), The Gray Man feels too big to be relegated to Netflix. It’s a globe-trotting actioner with multiple effects-heavy set pieces that feel designed for the biggest screen possible, and a cast that must have set the streamer back a pretty penny.
But a passing glance at the clichéd script, coupled with a pace designed to keep people from clicking to the next option, reveals this as another algorithm-influenced streaming distraction. While The Gray Man’s cast makes the film an improvement on Netflix time-wasters like Red Notice or 6 Underground, it can’t help but feel disposable, the type of noisy, empty bit of pabulum that previously would have been relegated quickly to repeat showings on TNT.

Filmmaking duo the Russo Brothers have expanded their action expertise beyond the MCU in ”The Gray Man”, an adaptation of the Mark Greaney novel of the same name.
For the film, the Russo Brothers have recruited longtime collaborator Chris Evans, seen in their work on “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War”(2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). However, this time around Evans plays the villain not the hero, with Ryan Gosling filling the role of the film’s protagonist. This is one of Netflix’s most expensive movies ever made, and thus is getting a bit of a different release strategy than some other Netflix movies.

Wednesday night was the premiere of “The Gray Man,” the Russo Brothers’ ambitious action thriller that, with a budget of 200 million, is the most expensive movie Netflix has ever made. On Thursday, the review embargo for the film lifted, bringing with it a generally underwhelmed response from critics.
The film stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as Court Gentry and Lloyd Hansen. Gentry is on the run from Hansen after coming into possession of top-secret CIA information, and Hansen is unforgiving in his efforts to chase Gentry down. Ana de Armas also stars as Dani Miranda, alongside Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Julia Butters, Dhanush, Alfre Woodard and Billy Bob Thornton.
Overall, most critics agree that “The Gray Man” is an over-the-top attempt by Netflix to capture the magic of blockbuster thrillers like the 007 movies. Gosling, Evans, de Armas and their co-stars show their talents, but the majority of reviews...

At age 13, Ryan Gosling was spreading cheer on “The Mickey Mouse Club.” But something must have snapped in the dozen years between “The Notebook” and “La La Land.” The Canadian heartthrob seems committed to convincing us that he can be a cold-blooded, even-keeled, unsentimental killer. Starting with Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive,” followed by the Danish director’s “Only God Forgives” and now playing the title character in the Russo brothers’ “The Gray Man,” an actor who once radiated charisma in “Crazy Stupid Love” has been perfecting an inexpressive cool that borders on nihilism, keeping his pulse stable and poker face fixed as he offs whatever adversaries come his way.
Gosling doesn’t just want to be an action star; he wants to be the Hollywood version of Alain Delon, the handsome French icon who played a sociopath with perfect cheekbones in “Purple Noon” and a hit man with no visible emotions in “Le Samouraï.

The title of Mark Greaney’s novel The Gray Man (first in a best-selling series) refers to a quality that is as desirable for a spy as it is difficult to find in contemporary movies about their exploits: the ability to move through the world without being noticed, so unremarkable that those you interact with forget you as soon as you’re out of the room.
That ethic barely makes it into Joe and Anthony Russo’s stylish, supersized Netflix adaptation, whose hero (Ryan Gosling) wears attention-grabbing clothes and attracts the kind of mayhem that shuts entire cities down (not to mention being so handsome that the spooks in a John le Carré operation would never let him out in the field.) A side character expounds on the value of blending in, but even he wears one-in-a-million facial hair and lives in a building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser,...

Even the Duke of Hastings can’t compete with “The Gray Man.”
“Bridgerton” breakout Regé-Jean Page detailed his secretive role in the Russo Brothers’ spy caper “The Gray Man,” in select theaters July 15 and streaming on Netflix July 22. The cat-and-mouse thriller stars Chris Evans as sociopathic assassin Lloyd Hansen, who is hired to hunt down CIA mercenary Courtland Gentry, aka Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling), after a security breach. Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” scene-stealer Julia Butters also star in the most expensive Netflix film to date.

A grenade, a knife, mace, multiple guns and rifles and a tranquilizer all made appearances in a new clip of “The Gray Man,” Netflix’s upcoming action thriller starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans that is based on the 2009 novel. The clip debuted as part of Netflix’s Geeked Week event.
In the clip, CIA mercenary Court Gentry (Gosling) and Lloyd Hansen (Evans) go head-to-head in a confrontation that takes place in the midst of Gentry’s attempts to outrun Hansen. After Gentry beats up more than a few men in tactical gear, Hansen sprays him with mace before pinning him up against a wall and saying, “Hey, sunshine.” After Hansen asks, “Where’s the drive,” referring to Gentry’s collection of dark agency secrets, Gentry drops a grenade on the ground and jumps out of a window.

In the first clip for the Russo Brothers’ “The Gray Man,” Ryan Gosling dismantles a room full of bad guys, insults Chris Evans’ “trash stache” and even thinks about stealing Evans’ shoes off his feet.
It’s a clip in which Gosling and Evans are meeting face to face for the first time, and Evans seemingly has Gosling in a barrel on two occasions as he looks for a mysterious hard drive that Gosling possesses. But it doesn’t stop Gosling from looking very nonplussed by the encounter and wondering why his attacker with a bad mustache and white pants is named “Lloyd.”
Netflix premiered the first look at the clip during their ongoing Geeked Week, and it’s a taste of a very expensive spy and espionage thriller from the directors of “Avengers: Endgame” that the streamer is hoping is a summer smash. The Russo Brothers were also on...
