Exclusive: Staffers from two talent agencies that recently ceased operations — temporarily or permanently — are coming together. Matt Fletcher and Katie McGrath from Kmr Talent, which suspended its SAG-AFTRA franchise last month, have joined Arise Artists Agency, the company recently launched by former A3 Artists Agency President Brian Cho following A3’s shutdown.
Fletcher will be heading the Emerging Talent Division, and McGrath will focus on inclusion and actors with disabilities. Their clients include Cedric Joe, Mason Cotton, Jenna Davis, Carey Cox, and Lauren “Lolo” Spencer. Fletcher and McGrath join former A3 agents Ashley Partington, Abbie Waters and Nic Frascino, who joined Arise at its inception.
“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Matt, Katie, and their incredible talent to our growing team at Arise Artists Agency,” said agency’s CEO Cho. “Their experience, diverse perspectives, and unwavering passion for their talent align perfectly with our vision as we strive for continuous growth and success.

Kathryn Newton is inevitably one of the best actresses of this generation. Yet, her recent onscreen performances aren’t quite catching fire at box offices the same way they did before. Just like how her Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) managed to gross almost thrice its budget, her recent Ant-Man 3 failed to land the mark and ended with a disappointing box office run.
Kathryn Newton in The Society
As it seems, that losing box-office streak of hers isn’t dying down easily. This comes after her most recent movie Lisa Frankenstein suffered a devastating blow at the worldwide box office to end its run with a gross even less than its budget. Despite this, her fans still have high hopes for this film, even predicting that it would go on to become a cult classic following its release on streaming.

Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”
In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

Sunday Am Update: How bad was this year’s Super Bowl weekend? Realize that Kenneth Branagh’s romance mystery misfire, Death on the Nile, opened to more over the Big Game weekend ($12.8M) two years ago, and that’s when female moviegoers were scared of Omicron!
Super Bowl weekend, despite its damper on Sunday business, used to be a box office frame that could still yield results, even for films aimed at dudes. Like in 2015, when the sixth weekend of American Sniper drummed up $30.7 million, or in 2020, when the third weekend of Bad Boys for Life did $17.6M.
Last year’s Super Bowl weekend totaled $52.6M, per Box Office Mojo, led by Warner Bros’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance, with an $8.3M opening. This year, we’re lower at $40M, -24% from a year ago and that’s because there isn’t a notable major studio wide release. That’s also...

The horror-comedy "Lisa Frankenstein" is now in theaters, and while reviews have been somewhat mixed, we here at /Film are fans. As Bj Colangelo wrote in her positive review:
I'm desperately trying not to sound like a cliche here, but the existence of "Lisa Frankenstein" feels like a miracle. It's as if Diablo Cody and Zelda Williams took Sprouse's "I'm a weirdo" speech from "Riverdale" and turned it into an entire movie to prove the point. For all of its fantastical elements of undead boyfriends and tanning bed magic, there's a genuine message about how ungodly difficult it is to be a teenage girl in all of its forms, but that gallows humor is one of the strongest coping mechanisms to employ. "Lisa Frankenstein" is the manic, impulsive, neon-soaked little sister of Lucky McKee's "May," and the long overdue, raunchy, coming-of-rage film Gen Z has been missing.

Awards season kicks into overdrive on the first weekend of the year with the return of the Golden Globes. The 81st telecast has a new broadcast partner (CBS), a new host (Jo Koy), new catering (Nobu) and a new social calendar accompanying it. For years, the Golden Globes were followed by a crush of studio and network bashes inside the show’s headquarters at the Beverly Hilton, making it a favorite of countless party-hopping revelers. But pandemic era cutbacks and studio consolidation upended the festivities — gone is the Warner Bros. and InStyle soiree while HBO scaled back under new corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery and will be hosting something on Emmy weekend — though all is not lost. This year’s parties are spread across the weekend and at various venues across the city.

As we close the book on 2023 and take stock of the best that this year delivered in movies and TV, let's not forget the bad guys. Villains are paradoxical characters; we love them precisely for how bad they can be, and if a story invests you in its villain, you can be cheering in equal measure as they rise and then as they fall. And then, of course, there's the sons of b*tches you just really want to see go down.
"Best villains" sounds similarly oxymoronic. So, why are these villains the ones who deserve the highlight? These are the bad guys who are not just wholly formed and compelling in their own right, but who further the themes of the story surrounding them and best challenge both the hero's goals and the writer's point(s). Stories are a reflection of the world in which they are told, so...

One of the biggest horror hits in recent memory (and one of the biggest original hits of any kind for that matter) was "M3GAN." Produced by modern horror master James Wan and directed by Gerard Johnstone ("Housebound"), the film about an AI caregiver gone wrong captivated audiences in 2023, becoming the year's first bonafide blockbuster hit. Naturally, that means a sequel is on the way. Get ready for "M3GAN 2.0."

The stars of Universal’s unofficial new-era monsterverse are facing off for Best Villain at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on May 7, giving this generation the next best thing to its very own “Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man.”
“M3GAN” came out in January and became 2023’s first bona fide success. The campy sci-fi slasher about a bereaved young girl’s high-tech doll becoming a killer robot scored $177 million against a $12-million budget. Universal followed the sleeper hit with February’s “Cocaine Bear,” in which a zany cast of characters must survive a 500-pound black bear that’s ingested a missing stash of narcotics. It earned the studio an additional $87 million but fell short of expectations. What will Cokey’s response to M3G’s upstaging of her be?

Among the most entertaining categories at the MTV Movie and TV Awards every year is Best Villain, but for a category intended to be all in good fun, its history has included some pretty iconic characters, from Denzel Washington‘s Oscar-winning Detective Alonzo Harris in “Training Day,” to Heath Ledger‘s Oscar-winning Joker in “The Dark Knight,” to Tom Hiddleston‘s star-making Loki in “The Avengers.” Who will join their ranks this year?
Well, judging from the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, we can expect the title character from the campy horror film “M3GAN” to prevail. Voiced by Jenna Davis and embodied by Amie Donald, M3GAN is an artificially intelligent doll who becomes hostile. She’s backed by 12 of our Top 24 Users and a whopping 17 of our All-Star Top 24. When released at the cinema earlier this year, M3gan was certainly promoted perfectly. The M3gan ‘dance’ featured in the trailer became a bit of a viral hit, and alongside mainly positive reviews, helped the movie make over $175 million at the box office – a huge profit. Now releasing on digital and Blu-ray is a new unrated version.
The story is pretty basic but that’s all it needs to be. A toy company builds a life-like doll that is sold to be a child’s friend as much as it is their toy. But before it is even officially released on the market, the Beta version of the doll is used by the designer’s niece and it soon starts to take on a life of its own.

Say hello to M3GAN, the lifelike companion that levels up the horrors of “Chucky” and “Annabelle” through the anxieties of AI.
“M3GAN” follows roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) who gifts a life-size AI doll to her 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw) after a tragedy suddenly puts Cady’s guardianship in Gemma’s hands. Though Cady and M3GAN hit it off as best friends, Gemma begins to worry if she has created something — or someone — too powerful to be stopped.
The highly anticipated flick also made a splash with a mesmerizing viral dance sequence — which was given an encore performance with eight M3GANs during its December premiere.

M3GAN is a science fiction horror movie directed by Gerard Johnstone, starring Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng and Brian Jordan Alvarez. The screenplay is written by Akela Cooper. By Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster Productions.
This movie is produced by James Wan (The Conjuring) which means one thing is for sure: this is a commercial movie. This is a movie full of clichés and common things (we accept this) and at the same time it is an ironic horror film that knows how to combine the iconography of the genrre in a brilliant way in a script that is intelligent even if it is superficially silly.
Storyline
A girl that has just lost her parents receives an Android created with A.I. as a companion. This Android is anything but charming.

Blumhouse may have the next big slasher franchise on their hands. Who's the star? M3GAN, the killer fembot with the dance moves of a teenage TikToker. The film's been both a critical favorite and a box-office hit, and a sequel is being fast-tracked.
M3GAN, portrayed physically in some scenes by young actress Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis, is a robotic doll designed to take interactive toys to a new level. She winds up being a little too good at her primary functions, developing sentience while taking her assignment of protecting Cady (Violet McGraw) to homicidal levels. "M3GAN" ended with some clear sequel bait. After M3GAN's body is destroyed, an Alexa-like smart home device owned by M3GAN's creator Gemma (Allison Williams) stares right into the camera, heavily hinting that M3GAN's mind lives on. So where does the story go from here?...

Not only has the sophomore effort from "Housebound" director Gerard Johnstone earned nearly 100 million at the box office against a 12 million budget, but has earned plenty of critical acclaim, with /Film's Jeff Ewing calling it "a horror comedy blast" in his review. Whether it was the meme-worthy dance that led the marketing team to glory, or Akela Cooper's smart screenplay, "M3GAN" had all the makings of a hit. M3GAN is everywhere. She's made several high-profile appearances, including during an L.A. Chargers football game. She's also popped up on "The Today Show," the NYC subway, and other hot spots around the country. M3GAN is unstoppable, and she is the moment. So it's not surprising she's managed to scare up 45 million at the worldwide box office in her eponymous movie's opening weekend. Not too shabby for a four-foot robot doll wrapped in silicone.
Directed by Gerard Johnstone, "M3GAN" walks the line between hilarious and disturbing. The film opens with a snowy car crash, in which 12 year old Cady (Violet McGraw) tragically loses both her parents. She’s sent to live with her tech genius single aunt Gemma (Williams), who’s just putting the finishing touches to her ambitious robo-project, code-named M3GAN (for Model 3 Generative ANdroid). Who needs parents when you’ve got an increasingly sentient android who can cater to your every need? It’s not a question often asked, but it’s one M3GAN flippantly answers. Indeed, Blumhouse Productions’ latest satirical horror sees Chucky reborn, thanks to a toy whose sweetness is slowly subverted into something more sinister.
The Dr Frankenstein to M3GAN’s AI monster is Gemma, a gifted engineer who wants to redefine what a toy can provide for children. In what is effectively the lead role, Allison Williams holds the film together brilliantly, carrying the right amount of hubris while clearly caught on uncommon ground when forced to care for her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw). It’s no real spoiler to say that Cady is thrust into Gemma’s care due to a tragic incident, and her coping mechanism for this grief increasingly becomes the android she is effectively gifted with.

In January, studios typically dump their less-than-stellar movies in theaters, hoping to make a little bit of money back, or to take the tax write-off and move on. When the "M3GAN" trailer dropped, it looked promising, but alarms started ringing after the studio slapped it with a PG-13 rating. Luckily, "M3GAN" is that rare January release that delivers on its premise and then some. It's a crowd-pleasing sci-fi, thriller, and comedy hybrid that leans a little more on laughs than scares, but that's precisely what makes it so much fun.

Sure, we have already sung the praises of how "M3GAN" expertly uses "Titanium" as a bizarre needle-drop, but why let that song have all the fun? There were, of course, a few other key moments where M3GAN shows off her singing chops in bizarre attempts to make Cady (Violet McGraw) feel better. In fact, the first instance of her singing comes during a pivotal scene where the soon-to-be killer doll sings a prototypically inspirational song filled with buzzwords to Funki board members.
As expected, this was not just a funny coincidence. In an interview with Variety, "M3GAN" director Gerard Johnstone revealed that the purpose of the song, officially titled "Tell Me Your Dreams," was meant to poke fun at slap-dashed children's entertainment seemingly made by algorithms. He walked the trade through its inception, detailing how he approached composer Anthony Willis with a bold combination of ideas.

After months of some genius viral marketing, "M3GAN" has proven to be yet another successful venture for Blumhouse. The caregiver AI turned sassy murderer is carving a name for herself in a world where Chucky currently holds the heavyweight title of cinema's memorable killer doll, and it's easy to see why. The acrobatic physicality of Amie Donald, coupled with the vocal performance of Jenna Davis, has proved to be a potent mix that brings cinema's newest slasher baddie to the screen with entertaining results. Not giving M3GAN her own franchise would be such a wasted opportunity. But given how the film ends, a sequel is all but inevitable.

Not outwardly terrifying, director Gerard Johnstone’s sci-fi slasher features a lifelike AI doll named M3GAN, programmed to attach itself to a single child. In the case of Akela Cooper and James Wan’s story, M3GAN finds her child soulmate in Cady (Violet McGraw), a young girl recently orphaned by a fatal, parental car accident. The rest of the story plays out with absurdity, a film reliant on knowledge, tech, and habits recognized by 2023 audiences. M3GAN works due to our own reliance on and ability to trust technology we don’t understand, taken to logical ends by the film’s willingness to ham up this story, go for big laughs, and succeed in finding them more often than not.

Once you see M3GAN dancing, you can’t unsee it. While killer dolls have always been fertile ground for horror movie directors to explore, the creators of the new Blumhouse movie M3GAN knew they needed something special for their story of an AI robot going to lethal ends to protect young orphan girl Cady (Violet McGraw). By the time the first trailer dropped late last year, it was clear that they found that something. From Twitter to TikTok, movie fans were recreating a clip of M3GAN dancing before grabbing a paper cutter, presumably to do something murderous.
Although M3GAN boasts creative talent such as James Wan and Jason Blum producing — as well as Akela Cooper, the writer behind 2021’s gonzo horror masterpiece Malignant — the dancing bit came from director Gerard Johnstone. The idea occurred to the New Zealand-born director of the horror comedy favorite Housebound late at night.

Exclusive: James Wan has been labeled by fans for being responsible for killer doll movies, specifically his Conjuring franchise spinoff, Annabelle.
“It’s funny, I really hadn’t done that yet,” says the horror auteur. And that was his prime reason to create M3GAN with screenwriter Akela Cooper.
“In my previous doll movies — they don’t kill anyone. Annabelle never gets up and walks around. Everyone says I’m the killer doll guy. So I said, I’m going to make a killer doll movie for a brand new generation. Behold the beauty of horror: Low-risk properties — but when they hit, the sky’s the limit. M3GAN was only made for 12M before P&a.

As soon as the first images of killer android doll M3GAN doing a TikTok dance hit social media, the internet had a new horror "it" girl. Blumhouse's latest horror outing "M3GAN" lives up to the hype, with its morbid humor and trenchant commentary on modern technology and the ways we use it (or it uses us). Gemma (Allison Williams) is a lead engineer for toy company Funki, and she's working on a new prototype: M3GAN (Amie Donald and the voice of Jenna Davis), an android designed to become a child's new best friend and the last toy they'll ever need.
When Gemma's sister and brother-in-law die in a car crash, leaving her with custody of her young niece Cady Gemma decides to test M3GAN by pairing her with Cady. Things take a dark turn that Gemma never (but should have) expected, and she...

There are more than a few bizarre, yet extremely amusing parts about "M3GAN." The strange toys created by Funki, the exaggerated responses characters give to situations, and the idea that people wouldn't be freaked out by a self-sufficient A.I. doll are just some of the elements that make the film work. Whether or not you believe its brutality was cut short by its PG-13 rating, you can't deny that "M3GAN" is an effectively wild film destined for cult infamy.
However, even for a movie with as many strange elements as this one, there is perhaps one moment that stands upon them all. The funny thing is that moment isn't even one of the meme-worthy scenes shown in promotional material and commercials — it is truly something you will have never seen coming, and that is what makes it so special.

"M3GAN" is a new horror movie about a terrifying AI doll who terrorizes those around her, and it's just as scary and creepy as the trailer promised. M3GAN stands for "model 3 generative android," and in the world of the film, she's 100 percent robot. But real-life technology hasn't gotten quite as far as the movie would make you think, which might have you wondering how the M3GAN doll came to life. The answer is a combination of acting, puppeteering, and movie magic. Ahead, we're breaking down how she came to grace screens.
Is M3GAN a Puppet?
So far, the "M3GAN" filmmakers have been pretty tight-lipped about how they made the doll. But The Hollywood Reporter reported on Dec. 8 that the film used a real robotic prototype for some of the M3GAN scenes. Violet McGraw, who plays Cady, whose Aunt Gemma (Allison Williams) gives her the M3GAN doll, told the outlet,...

Watch out, “Avatar,” the month of “M3GAN” has begun at the box office.
The killer doll movie, from Universal and Blumhouse, won’t knock off “Avatar: The Way of Water” from the top of the box office charts, but it’s aiming to turn a robust profit in its opening weekend. It has already made 2.75 million from Thursday previews from 2,950 North American theaters. On Friday, it’s expanding to 3,509 locations.
“M3GAN” is looking to carve up 17 million to 20 million in its opening weekend, which would be a killer result since it cost only 12 million to produce. The PG-13 horror will take a slice out of “Avatar: The Way of Water’s” weekend haul, where it’s been dominating week after week since it released on Dec. 16. James Cameron’s sequel is expected to bring in 30 million to 35 million. That’s roughly a 50 decrease from last week, when it earned 63.4 million...

On his commentary track for "Re-Animator," director Stuart Gordon refers to a Freudian-style interpretation of the "Frankenstein" myth as "a masturbation fantasy [...] it has to do with the idea of creating life without a woman." Taken in this way, Mary Shelley's tale of a man attempting to subvert nature demonstrates man's arrogance and envy of the biological abilities of cisgender women.
When a cis woman is the one driving the story of creating artificial life, however, there's less envy involved but much more perceived arrogance, with the character denying her "so-called natural purpose" and subverting it. In other words, a female Frankenstein can be seen as a character shirking her responsibility, creating life from her mind rather than her body.
It's that tension and those themes that "M3GAN," the new film from writer Akela Cooper and director Gerard Johnstone, ingeniously tackles. An impressively clever film,...

Gerard Johnstone's new film "M3GAN," a violent, wicked, enjoyable hoot of a film, cribs a lot of its images and plot points from films that came before. It bears a strong resemblance to Lars Klevberg's 2019 remake of "Child's Play," as well as to Wes Craven's goofy 1986 robo-thriller "Deadly Friend." The M3GAN of the title is a hyperintelligent robotic child that is being developed as a high-tech prototype toy by the brilliant engineer Gemma (Allison Williams). When Gemma loses her sister and brother-in-law in a car accident, she becomes the willing-but-not-really-attentive guardian of her nine-year-old niece Cady (Violet McGraw). Gemma uses the presence of a child in her home to field test M3GAN, and the robot quickly becomes a tender, ersatz parent for Cady. Naturally, M3GAN begins taking her task of protecting Cady a little too seriously, and it won't be...

The beginning of the year is typically Hollywood’s dead end. After a feast of holiday season blockbusters and late-arriving Oscar hopefuls, January is the hangover; the demonstrable dumping ground where studios cast off the dregs that didn’t work or the C-list fodder that’s used to fill in the cracks of a fiscal year report. In other words, a wide release after New Year’s Day is supposed to be a death sentence.
M3GAN defies all that conventional wisdom puffery. Hitting the screen like an Elmo-sized disruptor that’s eager to break low expectations, this intentionally campy update of the “killer doll” subgenre kicks 2023 off with a jolt of frothy horror mischief, if not necessarily high art. And as produced by filmmaker James Wan, who also provided the story and concept of M3GAN, this seems to be by design since the latest movie about a homicidal plaything fits...

If 2022 could be known as the year of the male puppet, with two different versions of the fairy tale classic Pinocchio, then 2023 is shaping up to be the year of the female doll. A few weeks ago the internet nearly broke with the first teaser for Barbie, which looks to be a candy-colored comedy. Oh, but that’s still months and months away, isn’t there any new toy-themed flicks out right now? Oh yes, there is, and she’s a terror. And though she looks like the kid cousin of Mattel’s queen she’s closer in spirit to Chuckie. Well, she’s lifesize and like last year’s movie subject, she’s “got no strings” on her. And unlike “Talking Tina” from TV’s Twilight Zone, she doesn’t just whisper threats. The “follow-through” is one of the upgrades on the interactive, and homicidal, doll called M3GAN.
