BBC Studios has backed a new UK entertainment label helmed by execs Simon Shalgosky and Daniel Brookes.
The producer-distributor will distribute Rebel Rebel Pictures’ formats globally following the launch of the shingle, which will focus on primetime entertainment and factual entertainment shows.
Shalgosky and Brookes have 40 years combined experience in TV between them, with past credits including Love Island, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and Eurovision and past employers including ITV Studios and Seven Studios.
They were most recently running the UK label of Dutch/Belgian unscripted producer Vincent TV, which Deadline revealed in October 2021.
“Our aim for Rebel Rebel is to create some of the most imaginative shows on television with global reach,” said Shalgosky. “We are great believers in creating big formats and strive to craft shows that are so iconic, they can be recognised instantly, even with the sound turned down.

The Masked Singer is back on our screens, turning the nation into at-home detectives as they try to figure out who this year’s celebrity contestants are.
The singing competition series, in which celebrities compete anonymously behind giant anthropomorphic costumes, returned on New Year’s Day, with the first group of contestants all performing.
Among the group was Phoenix, who was shown in their Vt standing within a grand castle and explaining in a posh accent that “I am rather hot, aren’t I?”
“Fire” by Kasabian then played as Phoenix said that they had risen from the ashes and been “born anew” and “reincarnated”.
They also said that they were good with “mysteries” and “following a trail”, while Phoenix was shown inspecting foot prints with a magnifying glass.
Phoenix’s first performance was a jazz version of “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. While performing, they sang with an American accent.

Get out your magnifying glasses and dust off that notebook, because The Masked Singer is back to turn a nation of viewers into sofa detectives.
Helmed once again by comedian Joel Dommett, the unique competition shows 13 mystery celebrities singing familiar tunes on stage, while dressed up in a costume obscuring who they really are.
Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.
In the season’s first episode on New Year’s Day, Ghost was eliminated and was later revealed to be football star Chris Kamara.
Still, there’s a long season ahead, with plenty more costumes to be unmasked. Here’s a guide to the clues and guesses so far.
Who is Otter?
Otter first appeared in episode one with a passionate performance of Jimi Jamison’s “I’m Always Here” – also known as the Baywatch theme tune.

When Maurice and the rodents reach the town of Bad Blintz, they encounter Malicia and their con runs into some other trouble. Featuring the voices of Hugh Laurie, Emilia Clarke, Himesh Patel, Gemma Arterton, David Thewlis, Joe Sugg, Ariyon Bakare, Rob Brydon, plus Hugh Bonneville. YouTube earlier this year wound down most of its originals division, in a significant pullback on its investment in scripted and unscripted programming.
But it’s not totally out of the game: YouTube is continuing to bulk up its slate of kids and family originals, as part of its previously announced 100 million fund earmarked for kids, family and educational content.

Compensation
Visual effects and animation studio Dneg, whose credits include “Dune” and “No Time to Die,” will pay enhanced overtime to its U.K. employees.
From October, Dneg will pay overtime at 1.5x rate to all U.K. staff in non-management positions for all incremental time that they are asked to work beyond the standard 40-hour week. The move will bring Dneg’s U.K. overtime policy in line with its studios in North America and applies across its film and episodic visual effects, Dneg Animation and ReDefine operations, including its artist, production, technology and support teams.
The decision is a departure from the existing U.K. industry norm, where employees are compensated for overtime with paid time off after a project is completed.
Dneg has won multiple awards over the years. In 2021 alone, the company won the visual effects BAFTA and Oscar for Christopher Nolan‘s “Tenet.”

YouTube star Joe Sugg, who is also a noted graphic novelist and talent management company proprietor, has reportedly signed on to the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing -- a U.K. reality competition series in the vein of ABC's Dancing With The Stars.
In the hit BBC One show, celebrities are partnered with professional ballroom dancers, and compete via themed performances week to week, which are scored by a panel of expert judges. Metro speculates that the series could stand to gain some serious social starpower if Sugg does indeed opt to compete, given that several of his YouTube-famous friends and family members would presumably attend live tapings, including sister Zoe Sugg and best friend-slash-business partner Caspar Lee.

On July 3, three web stars famous for their High on Life YouTube channel were tragically killed after a deadly waterfall accident. Megan Scraper, 29, better known as "Mindy," allegedly slipped and fell off of Shannon Falls in British Colombia, and her boyfriend Alexey Lykah, 30, and friend Ryker Gamble, 30, dove in to save her. Sadly, all three died, and Squamish Police have recovered their bodies. The tragic news about the three adventure junkies was confirmed in a video on the High on Life YouTube channel, with their visibly emotional friend Justis Price Brown saying, “They were three of the warmest, kindest, most driven and outgoing people you could ever meet, and the world has lost a great deal of light from the passing of our friends. They lived every single day to its fullest, they stood for positivity, courage, living the best life you can, and they shared and taught their values to millions of people worldwide.

It won't just be all-world soccer players, however, who will hang with Whitehall on his upcoming show. YouTube stars who are expected to appear on the program include Joe Sugg, Manny, Joe Wicks, and The F2 Freestylers. Following reports that U.K. vloggers Caspar Lee and Joe Sugg have ceased ties with Gleam Futures -- a leading digital talent management company that helped build the careers of many prominent U.K. creators -- it appears as though fellow creator Alfie Deyes may have also departed the firm.
While Deyes -- who is a close friend and collaborator of both Lee and Sugg -- has yet to formally confirm any moves, the 24-year-old has tweeted in recent days about launching a new business venture. “The new company is really taking shape,” Deyes tweeted on Nov. 3, though he has not shared any details about its nature or scope. Lee and Sugg, who also announced their departure from Gleam on Nov. 3, are also slated to launch a new business venture -- though they, too, have yet to furnish any details.

In coming weeks, Lee and Sugg will announce a new business venture -- though they declined to provide any details.

They noted that their contracts at the London-based company have expired and they are opting not to renew. “With the creator platform constantly evolving, we have decided to fully immerse ourselves in a new business venture, which will be announced in the coming weeks. American vlogging star Tyler Oakley has joined the lineup of HelloWorld -- a two-day gathering for YouTube fans that will take place in Birmingham, England in October. Comprising performances, skits, and engagements, HelloWorld is being headlined by some of the U.K.’s biggest digital stars, including Caspar Lee, Joe Sugg, Louise Pentland, Ksi, and Zoella.
According to its website, HelloWorld will see a fictional town constructed in the middle of Birmingham's Genting Arena, with a performance stage at the end of the 'Main Street'. The four-hour day won't function as a traditional meet-and-greet, but will instead consist of two separate show portions. A ‘Daytime Experience’ will comprise street shows, classes, carnival rides, live music, and challenges -- all of which attendees can experience alongside top creators. The ‘Nighttime Show’ will allow seated ticket holders to attend a concert-like spectacle.

In the wake of a devastating terrorist attack in Manchester, England yesterday evening, which resulted in 59 injuries and 22 deaths, the online video community is rallying behind one of the first named victims, 18-year-old Georgina ‘Gina’ Callander.
In addition to being a fan of Ariana Grande, who was performing at the Manchester Arena just prior to the attack -- which appears to have been carried out by a lone suicide bomber -- Callander was also a superfan of several top YouTube stars, per We The Unicorns. A health and social care student at Runshaw College, she had met and taken selfies with the likes of Joe Sugg, Tyler Oakley, and identical twin lifestyle vloggers Lucy And Lydia (see below).
