The 2024 Adelaide International, is the last Wta 500 tournament before the first major of the season, and it will run from January 8th to 13th, as we already know the draw.
Before the first Grand Slam of the season - the Australian Open, women are treated to two Wta 500 tournaments, which give them a chance to accumulate a total of 1000 points, which is almost as much as the runner-up finish is worth in Melbourne.
The runner-up finish is something that Elena Rybakina achieved at the Australian Open in 2023, and that's also maybe one of the reasons, why she's one of the few players that elected to take part in both of these Wta 500 tournaments, to make up for points that she may loss in the Melbourne Park.
She reached the final in Brisbane, and in Adelaide, she will play as the top seed. The first two seeds have a first-round bye,...

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek was among a handful of Top 100 players who did not play doubles in Wta competitions for a full calendar year this season.
In fact, the Polish star hasn't featured in Wta doubles since 2021 when she partnered five-time Grand Slams doubles champion Bethanie Mattek-Sands in Indian Wells which was held in October due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier that same season, Swiatek reached the Roland Garros doubles final together with the American where they would lose to Czech pair Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova. The 22-year-old has elected to focus on her singles career since the start of 2022.
And that decision has bore fruits for Swiatek who became World No. 1 for the first time in April and has reigned for more than 75 weeks. It is worth noting that Swiatek played mixed doubles with Hubert Hurkacz at the inaugural United Cup, but not doubles at Wta-level tournaments.

The gap between Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek stretched to 836 points in the latest Wta rankings.
Swiatek lost her champion's points from winning San Diego at this time last year (precisely 345 points), bringing down her tally to 8,545 points. Sabalenka dropped points too, but only 99, sitting in prime position at the top with 9,381 points.
Just one tournament is left - the prestigious Wta Finals in Cancun - and the Pole doesn't control the outcome of her destiny. The rest of the top five is unlikely to have new names for the remainder of the season, but there might be changes in the order as Coco Gauff , newly-crowned Korea Open champion Jessica Pegula and Elena Rybakina fight for 3rd place.
China's Qinwen Zheng makes her Top 20 debut (19th) after winning the biggest Wta title of her career in Zhengzhou. She defeated former Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova in the final to win the Wta 500 event.

Wta tennis returns to North Africa for the second time this season as the second edition of the Tunisia Open hosts 32 determined women in the coastal city of Monastir.
The draw for the event has just been released. The buzz that surrounded the build-up has evaporated, as the home crowd favourite Ons Jabeur will not compete at the tournament. Therefore, the top seed will be Italy's Jasmine Paolini .
But there is still a lot to be excited about this year's field as we get to see the unheralded players on the Itf Tour who have featured sporadically on the main tour get a bite of Tour-level action. This will be a chance to collect a decent paycheck with a slight increase in prize money in addition to vying for a Wta title.

Bianca Andreescu was once again stopped by an injury, this time forcing her to withdraw from the 2023 US Open .
It was at Flushing Meadows where the Canadian enjoyed her biggest success to date when she won the 2019 US Open. It's been an incredible title run for the youngster, who won the Wta 1000 titles in Indian Wells and Toronto, and ended it with a Grand Slam trophy in her hands.
However, since then, Andreescu has been struggling. She dropped out of the Top 50 in the Wta Rankings , and despite showing some promise in some of this year's matches, she struggled with injuries multiple times once again.
Most recently, an injury impacted her during a loss to Camila Giorgi in Montreal , and as a result, she was forced to withdraw from the 2023 Cincinnati Masters . The Canadian had high hopes of recovering for the last major of the season, but she wasn't successful on the mission.

The 2023 Poland Open in Warsaw will once again bring a lot of excitement to the Polish capital, especially because of one name on the entry list .

Paris, June 9 (Ians) The women’s singles final of the French Open 2023 on Saturday will be fought between two players on the opposite end of the spectrum — the defending champion against the giant-killer.
The summit clash of the clay court Grand Slam will have Iga Swiatek, who is hoping to win her fourth title taking on Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova, who is chasing her maiden Grand Slam title.
Bidding to win her third French Open title, World No.1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland is the player in form, who has reached the summit clash without losing a single set.
In contrast, No.43 Karolina Muchova has already scored upset after upset in Paris, including her three-set win against No.2 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals.
The question, the fans will be asking on Saturday is: Can the 26-year-old Czech maintain her perfect record against Top 3 opposition to stop Swiatek...

Bianca Andreescu has shared her desire to enter the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon alongside her Roland Garros partner Michael Venus.
Andreescu and Venus entered the mixed doubles tournament at Roland Garros as alternate participants after being paired together by coach Christophe Lambert. Surprisingly, the duo reached the final but were eventually eliminated by Miyu Kato and Tim Putz across three sets.
For Andreescu, it was her first appearance in a doubles event at a Grand Slam since 2019 as the Canadian player has largely focused on her singles career. However, when asked by reporters about the possibility of returning at Wimbledon alongside Venus in the mixed doubles event, Andreescu seemed positive about the idea.
"We haven't spoken about that yet, but if the time comes and I'm ready to play mixed doubles or I want to play mixed doubles and I'm healthy and all that, then I would love to.

Iga Swiatek is through to the next round of Roland Garros following a 29-minute match against Lesia Tsurenko who retired.
Swiatek was the huge favourite before this match so her advancing isn't really surprising yet she would have preferred to do it without a Ret near Tsurenko's name. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian tennis player started experiencing issues pretty early in the first set while Swiatek dominated.
She took a medical timeout after breaking Swiatek and the score being 4-1 in favour of the Polish player with the doctor measuring her blood pressure. She was seemingly experiencing breathing difficulties judging by the treatment she was receiving during the medical timeout.
She continued after that, and played one game which Swiatek won comfortably and then retired from the match unfortunately with the clock stopping at 29 minutes. Not a great finish to the match but Swiatek will be glad about advancing and not having...

Coco Gauff is another step closer to the 2023 Roland Garros final after beating Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Last year, the young American was stopped in the final of the second Grand Slam of the season, and this year, she has her eyes on the trophy. But a difficult path paved her way to the final as she had to beat 16-year-old prodigy Mirra Andreeva along the way, and met an inspired Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the fourth round.
The Slovak player was yet to lose a set in Paris this year, but in their only meeting on the Wta Tour, Gauff bested Schmiedlova last year in Madrid and she wanted to follow up on that win with a positive showing on the Parisian clay.
Gauff started the match in the best possible way by breaking her opponent's serve to love and confirming that break with a hold of serve. She lost...

Aryna Sabalenka created quite a moment of confusion at Roland Garros with her request to hold a 'closed off' press conference.
The Belarusian clashed with a reporter in her previous press conference as they questioned her support towards Belarus' president. The player didn't want to go through that again so she asked the event to organize a 'closed off' press conference, citing mental health as a reason for the request.
She was ultimately granted that request and she held a smaller press conference without the Ukrainian journalist that grilled her on her support for Alexander Lukashenko. In the closed press conference, she addressed the whole matter explaining that she really didn't feel safe last time around.
Yeah, after my match I spoke with the media like I normally do. I know they still expect some questions that are more about politics and not so much about my tennis. For many...

Paris, June 4 (Ians) Defending champion Iga Swiatek swept into the Round of 16 at the French Open with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over 80th-ranked Wang Xinyu on Court Philippe Chatrier, here on Saturday.
World No.1 Swiatek of Poland took just 51 minutes to dismiss Wang in their first clash at the tour level. Swiatek had edged Wang in their two very close meetings during their junior careers, but this time around, the top seed cruised to a win.
Swiatek, the champion in 2020 as well as last year, has won her last ten matches at Roland Garros and is 24-2 throughout her career at the tournament.
After winning her first two matches this week by identical 6-4, 6-0 scorelines, Swiatek had an even easier time of it against Chinese No.5 Wang. Swiatek brings a comprehensive 19-game winning streak into the next round.

Lesia Tsurenko has opposed certain organisations for lifting bans on Russian players amid the war in Ukraine.
Tsurenko has often been outspoken on the issue of the Russia-Ukraine war and has raised tensions on occasion this season for refusing to shake the hand of Russian player Daria Kasatkina at the Madrid Open. Also, ahead of the 2023 Roland Garros, the 34-year-old urged Ukrainian players to show "no sympathy" against Russian competitors.
Once again, Tsurenko used her platform to question why Russian players have been allowed to compete once again at big sporting events, like the 2023 Wimbledon and the 2024 Paris Olympics. After her first-round victory over Barbora Krejcikova, Tsurenko didn't hold back in sharing her frustrations over the return of Russian players.

Barbora Krejcikova won't repeat her 2021 Roland Garros triumph this year as she lost already in the first round.
The Czech player, who reached the world no. 2 spot on the Wta Tour and is a seven-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, enjoyed her biggest success in singles two years ago when she stunned the world with her Roland Garros triumph.
Last year, Krejcikova couldn't follow up on the success, losing already in the first round to Diane Parry in three sets. It seems that the 2021 champion can't deal with the pressure at Roland Garros as she's yet to win a match in the French capital since her triumph two years ago.
This time, she took on Lesia Tsurenko and she was really confident ahead of the event. Krejcikova expressed a desire to challenge the dominance of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalanka, and Elena Rybakina, but her 2023 Roland Garros performance wasn't enough to do that.

Unfortunately, the anticipation isn't in place only because of Kostyuk's recent success and a potential of a very good match. In the past, the two exchanged some words via media as the tensions are high between the athletes from Belarus and Ukraine on the Wta Tour.
Ahead of the tournament, Sabalenka spoke to the press and she was asked about playing the Ukrainian. The World No. 2 stated that if her opponent wants to hate her, she's free to do that, while also explaining that she will understand if she doesn't shake her hand.

Lesia Tsurenko has been a passionate advocate for Ukraine during the conflict with Russia and she has urged her fellow players to beat Russians.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a very complicated matter with the effects of felt by everyone and everywhere. Sports has not been the exception because politics and sports have always been linked, far more than some might think.
Tennis is no different and there has been support for the Ukranian cause across the board. Some players have gotten a lot of backlash over their lack of open support for the cause. Anhelina Kalinina didn't shake hands with Veronika Kudermetova at the 2023 Italian Open in Rome and she was asked about it afterward.
It's been quite some time since the majority of the Ukrainian players decided to boycott handshakes with Russian players. We've seen it in a match between Lesia Tsurenko and Daria Kasatkina, but also during the trophy ceremony including Marta Kostyuk and Anastasia Potapova.
Now, another match between players from these two countries was played and it was in the semifinals of the 2023 Italian Open in Rome. Kalinina won the match in three sets, beating her opponent 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, despite losing a big lead in the second set.
Yet, after the match, she didn't shake her opponent's hand and naturally, she was asked about it in the post-match press conference, as it's still a sight that not many got used to on the Wta Tour.

Iga Swiatek keeps cruising at the 2023 Italian Open in Rome after she defeated Donna Vekic in the fourth round.
The World No. 1 is a favourite at almost every event that she enters, but especially those played on the red dirt. The Wta 1000 tournament in Rome is one of those, so it's not a surprise that Swiatek is a two-time defending champion, having won the event in 2021 and 2022.

The 26-year-old is currently ranked 13th player on the Wta Tour and at the 2023 Madrid Open, she overcame a string of four losses by beating Nuria Parrizas-Diaz and Anastasia Potapova in the first two matches to set up a fourth-round meeting with Daria Kasatkina.
And her two fellow compatriots, Potapova and Kasatkina were caught in controversies over the past few months too. While Potapova sparked outrage by wearing Spartak Moscow's jersey, Kasatkina has been on the receiving end, as she was denied a handshake by Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko during the ongoing event in Madrid.

Ukrainian tennis player Lesia Tsurenko opted not to shake hands with Russian opponent Daria Kasatkina after a loss at the 2023 Madrid Open.
The world of tennis witnessed another interesting moment during the 2023 Madrid Open when Ukrainian player Lesia Tsurenko declined to shake hands with her Russian counterpart, Daria Kasatkina, after a 6-4, 6-2 loss in the third round.
As the two crossed paths at the end of the match, Kasatkina understood that her opponent doesn't want to shake hands and she offered Tsurenko a quick wave. Surprisingly, it seemed that the Ukrainian athlete responded with a subtle but noticeable acknowledgment.
This incident, which took place on the Arantxa Sanchez court, is a reflection of the current war and tensions that have spilled over into the sports arena. Many players openly spoke about tensions in the locker room on the Wta Tour, and it's not the first time that we saw...

Madrid, April 30 (Ians) Women’s World No.1 Iga Swiatek came back from a service break down early in the first set to overcome No.29 seed Bernarda Pera 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of the Madrid Open here on Sunday.
With this win the Polish star extended her clay-court winning streak this season to six after winning against her opponent from the United States, thus clinching her place in the fourth round.
Swiatek needed just 75 minutes to dispatch Pera and move through to a fourth-round meeting with either No.22 seed Zheng Qinwen or No.16 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.
“I wouldn’t say it was easy. Every match is tricky here,” Swiatek said afterwards. “I’m happy that I’m getting my rhythm. Playing against a lefty is never easy…but I’m pretty happy that I was disciplined and focused.”
Also in the women’s singles, eighth seed Daria Kasatkina had...

The Wta Tour and its locker rooms are not currently in the calmest state and the world no. 1, Iga Swiatek, acknowledged it.
With many top Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian players, the atmosphere on the Wta Tour is very tense. Only recently, the world no. 2 from Belarus, Aryna Sabalenka, has spoken out against facing hate in the locker room. Her initial claims were denied by Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, but the later revealed comments from the Ukrainian shed a different light on the situation.
In one of her interviews, Kostyuk said that she would like to harm Russian and Belarusian players physically and the tennis world was left stunned by this statement. Moreover, the statements by the Wta CEO Steve Simon, after which Ukrainian player Lesia Tsurenko had a panic attack and withdrew from the Indian Wells also didn't help.
Now, speaking to the BBC, Iga Swiatek shared her honest perspective on...

Elina Svitolina opened up about the recent struggles of the Ukrainian players and the incident with the Wta.
The return was a pretty positive one all things considered because she nearly beat a player who is fairly high-ranked and does well on clay generally. Putintseva needed almost three hours to finish off Svitolina who showed off good tennis nearly 13 months after she last stood on a tennis court.
In the interview specifically, Svitolina touched upon Lesia Tsurenko's recent experience in Indian Wells and how she understands what she went through as she explained in a talk with L'Equipe.
We are afraid, we feel empty. What is happening to Lesia is very sad. People who haven’t experienced it can’t really understand what it feels like to have no home, to feel safe nowhere, to have family in Ukraine, under the bombs, to know that Ukrainian cities are being destroyed.

Tensions have escalated within the Wta as Ukrainian players claim their requests for a meeting with the organization's board have been met with silence.
Marta Kostyuk, the rising Ukrainian tennis star, expressed her frustration during a recent press conference following her defeat by Russian opponent, Anastasia Potapova, at the 2023 Miami Open.
The match itself was mired in controversy, as Kostyuk chose not to shake Potapova's hand after the game. The young Ukrainian's decision highlighted the emotional toll the war has taken on athletes from the affected countries.
Kostyuk later revealed that her compatriot, Lesia Tsurenko, had requested a meeting with the Wta board on behalf of Ukrainian players earlier this month, following her withdrawal from Indian Wells before a match against Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka. However, the Wta has yet to respond.
"Yes, we wanted to have the meeting with the board and we didn't get one. No reply, nothing, just silence.

In the midst of a heated exchange, Nikita Vlasov, coach of Ukrainian tennis player Lesia Tsurenko, has responded strongly to Aryna Sabalenka's comments.
The controversy began when Tsurenko withdrew from her third-round match against Belarusian Sabalenka, citing a panic attack as the primary reason. The World No. 81 later explained that the attack was triggered by a disconcerting conversation with Wta CEO Steve Simon about the participation of Russian and Belarusian players in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
Sabalenka shared her opinion on the matter, defending the Wta's efforts to ease tensions between players from the involved countries. She further claimed that neither she nor any Russian athletes were responsible for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and spoke about the hate in the locker rooms. The Belarusian star also insinuated that the overwhelming pressure exerted by Tsurenko's coach, Vlasov, was the real cause of the panic attack. She said:

In a recent interview with Tribuna, Nikita Vlasov, the coach of Ukrainian tennis player Lesia Tsurenko, criticized Novak Djokovic.
The controversy unfolded at this year's Australian Open when Djokovic's father, Srdjan, was captured on video celebrating with a group of fans carrying pro-Russian flags and wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the 'Z' symbol, a known emblem in support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Soon after the video emerged, Srdjan Djokovic apologized and claimed it was a misunderstanding as Novak also did. As a result, he was then absent from his son's semifinal match.
According to Vlasov, Djokovic lacked courage in denouncing his father's actions during the Australian Open earlier this year and missed an opportunity to use his influential status to promote peace and condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"It was a stupid situation. This is my personal opinion. Djokovic's father said 'Glory to Russia' on camera and then claimed he was misunderstood.

Aryna Sabalenka has spoken out against the recent incendiary comments made by Lesia Tsurenko and her coach, Nikita Vlasov, following her successful run to the 2023 Indian Wells final.
Sabalenka's candid response comes after being embroiled in a controversy surrounding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and its impact on athletes. At the 2023 Indian Wells, Sabalenka secured a spot in the final after a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory over Maria Sakkari.
However, it was her earlier match against Tsurenko that sparked controversy, as the Ukrainian player withdrew just before their scheduled 3rd-round encounter. The reason for Tsurenko's withdrawal was later revealed to be a panic attack triggered by remarks from Wta CEO Steve Simon.
In a recent press conference, Sabalenka addressed the accusations leveled against her by Lesia Tsurenko's coach, Nikita Vlasov, who implied she "theoretically" supported the war. The Belarusian firmly dismissed these claims, arguing that neither Russian nor Belarusian athletes should...
