Law & Order Svu was very good to its stars Chris Meloni and Mariska Hargitay. It not only gave them both the careers they enjoy now, but they were also recognized for some of television’s most coveted accolades. Although they’ve both received Emmy nominations, Hargitay was considered for the prize before Meloni. Which made things a little awkward for Meloni on the Svu set.

Hargitay received her first of many Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2004. Since then, she has received eight nominations for her contributions to the show. She even won the Emmy in 2006. This was a big year for Svu, as Meloni received his first nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the time.

Timing is everything — and where Yellowstone is concerned, it seems to have had everything to do with Kevin Costner’s departure as the Dutton family’s beleaguered patriarch, John. In an attempt to set the record straight about his exit ahead of Season 5B, the Golden Globe winner tells GQ that yes, ultimately, scheduling was to blame. Whether because of Covid, strikes or other issues, “we very rarely started [production] when we said we would, and we didn’t finish when we said we would.

Law & Order Svu shook things up in a big way after Chris Meloni left the series. One of the major shifts was the development of Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson. But doing so went against Dick Wolf’s one rule when it came to his Law & Order characters.
Dick Wolf was adamant that ‘Law & Order’ characters shouldn’t change Olivia Benson | Virginia Sherwood/Getty Images
Meloni’s sudden departure from Svu resulted in many changes that still affect the show to this day. New characters like Kelli Giddish’ Amanda Rollins were introduced to help fill the role Meloni’s Elliot Stabler left behind. Not only that, but Meloni’s departure meant that Hargitay would be leading the show without her partner. This would put more focus on Hargitay’s Olivia Benson than ever before.

Law & Order Svu‘s Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler have been shipped together for years, now. Mariska Hargitay has been fielding questions about the two characters coming together almost since the show’s inception. But lately, she’s grown more fascinated with another kind of shipping.
Mariska Hargitay reveals the kind of ‘shipping’ she wants ‘Law & Order Svu’ fans to really focus on Chris Meloni and Mariska Hargitay | Eric Liebowitz/Getty Images
Hargitay and Meloni’s characters have been involved in a sort of ‘will they, won’t they’ sub-plot for decades. At one point, this pairing seemed unlikely. Meloni’s Stabler was married with kids, then Meloni would leave the show entirely. This allowed Hargitay’s Benson to explore other romantic interests in the show, which had been rarely touched on before.
Benson’s love interests seldom worked out, however, and the character is still single and married to her work in Svu.

Law & Order Svu has teased a possible romance between Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler for years now. Actor Chris Meloni revealed his thoughts not too long ago about a relationship between the two characters actually happening.

Meloni and Hargitay were aware of their chemistry the moment they met. The two formed a quick bond with each other even before doing their screentest. One of their first memories together was Meloni making Hargitay laugh by telling her a story. Their bond was only solidified after auditioning together, which would create a friendship that would last for decades.
“I walked in, saw him, and I went, ‘That guy. That’s the guy.’ It went deep, very fast. We both knew that it was something big,” Hargitay told People not too long ago.

Law & Order Svu has put its cast through some difficult episodes. Actors like Mariska Hargitay have been very candid in the past about how the show’s darker subject matter affected her. But Kelli Giddish might’ve been even more disturbed by certain episodes, especially ones involving children.
How Kelli Giddish dealt with the tougher episodes of ‘Law & Order Svu’ Kelli Giddish | Arturo Holmes/WireImage
Giddish knew what she was signing up for when she was first cast in Svu. She’d already guest-starred on Law & Order Svu as another character four years prior to landing the role of Amanda Rollins. She even appeared in Wolf’s other spin-off Criminal Intent. But guest-starring on the show was much different than being a series-regular.
As detective Rollins, Giddish was consistently exposed to more than a few haunting crimes. Some of which could be hard to shake off when Giddish could relate to them personally.

Law & Order Svu did a lot for Ice-t’s acting career when casting him on the show way back in 1999. But it was a good thing Ice-t was cast in his more mature years. If he was approached for the show when he was younger, he might’ve turned it down.

Ice-t is one of Svu‘s veterans, having been a part of the show from the beginning. Acting wasn’t anything new to Ice-t when he was first approached for the project. But the series’ creator Dick Wolf was concerned Ice-t would have issues with playing a police officer.

Updated May 9: Peacock has confirmed the show’s move from NBC and noted that John Shiban will return as showrunner.
Previous: NBC’s loss is Peacock’s gain — again.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Peacock is putting the finishing touches on a deal that would see Law & Order: Organized Crime move from NBC to the streamer for a fifth season consisting of 10 episodes.
Reps for Peacock, NBC, producers Universal Television and executive producer Dick Wolf declined to comment, as a deal has yet to officially close.
Marking a return to the L&o world for franchise favorite Chris Meloni, Organized Crime has overperformed on Peacock with the streamer serving as the streaming home for all things Dick Wolf. Once the deal is formalized, Peacock will now have a Wolf original series to go with next-day episodes of NBC’s already renewed L&o flagship as well as Svu.

Law & Order star Mariska Hargitay lost her mother Jayne Mansfield in a car accident when she was just three-years-old. But it wasn’t until much later on in life that she started truly processing her grief.

It took some time for Hargitay to learn how to properly deal with the loss of her mother. It wasn’t an overnight process, and required trial and error for the actor to address her feelings.

“Law & Order” crossovers never fail to open up sweet opportunities where our favorite characters from different “Law & Order” universes get to meet and interact with each other. [Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Season 23, Episode 4 of “Law & Order.”]
Among Sam Waterston’s last words as Jack McCoy was “integrity.”
The film and television actor walked away from “Law & Order” for good Thursday night, February 22, ending his 30-year stint as Dick Wolf’s most recognizable Manhattan D.A. in a mixed bag of an episode. An awkward Central Park swan song (goose song?), Season 23’s “Last Dance” demonstrates not only how much Waterston has changed as a performer — but just how little police procedurals have been able to evolve with socially divided network audiences in recent years.
Yes, Jack’s junkyard dog bravado gave way to a subtler anger in the series’ revival seasons; and he stopped sleeping with all those assistant district attorneys, which certainly helped. But the hero lawyer’s final chapter is chockfull of awkward political posturing that plays as indicative of a genre increasingly uncomfortable with its role in American culture. The...

The...

Law & Order: Svu shaped Mariska Hargitay’s life in many ways, even introducing the actor to her husband. She and Peter Hermann have enjoyed a long marriage and have since started a family. But she quipped there was another actor she was willing to break her vows for. And Hermann completely understood.

Hermann came into Hargitay’s life at an unexpected but perfect time. Because of her Svu career, Hargitay had little time for relationships. And it didn’t help that she was transported to the always-bustling New York City.
“Well, I had a few rough years in New York because I’d lived in L.A. my whole life, and felt ripped from the womb when I moved here. It was difficult to maintain relationships working 14 hours a day. As an actor,...

Law & Order Svu might be what Chris Meloni is most known for after being cast as Elliot Stabler. But before he was the iconic detective, he played a much different character in Oz. However, going from serial killer to cop wasn’t a smooth transition for the actor.

Meloni’s Oz role was a much different beast than the character he’d become so synonymous with in Svu. On the HBO classic series, he portrayed a disturbed inmate obsessed with killing. Ironically, however, Svu would see him on the other side of the law. Oz would also help Meloni secure the hit show. Speaking with Randee Dawn, he opened up about the long process he went through to earn his Svu part.
“My first audition was with Dick Wolf himself,” Meloni said.

Law & Order Svu went through a bit of a transition period after Chris Meloni left. The actor’s sudden departure allowed the series to explore one particular storyline with Mariska Hargitay that she couldn’t with Meloni in the picture.

The complexion of Law & Order and its characters shifted a little bit after Meloni’s unexpected departure from the show. Hargitay spoke at length about how devastated she was after she lost her co-star, so much so she considered leaving the show, too. But Hargitay’s Olivia Benson was met with new challenges and stories that convinced the actor to remain on the series. This included getting to know a brand new cast of actors and characters.

The longest-serving actor on Law & Order is set to work his last case.
Sam Waterston, who has been part of the NBC drama since 1994, is leaving the show. His final episode as Manhattan District Attorney Jack McCoy is set to air Feb. 22. Tony Goldwyn (Scandal, Oppenheimer) will then join Law & Order as the new Da.
The 83-year-old Waterston joined L&o at the beginning of its fifth season. He’ll depart partway through his 19th season on the series, having appeared in more than 400 episodes as McCoy, who began on the series as an assistant district attorney. The character was appointed interim Da in season 17 and was revealed to have won the elected position of district attorney in the 20th and final season of the show’s original 1990-2010 run. Waterston reprised the character when NBC revived Law & Order in 2022, serving as a link to the original show.

Law & Order Svu changed Mariska Hargitay’s life in more ways than one. In addition to the show being her breakthrough role, it also unexpectedly helped her find her soulmate.

Law & Order star Mariska Hargitay was determined to correct a slight misstep she had with her character over the years. It took some time, but she not only learned how to act like a cop, but move like one, too.
Mariska Hargitay had trouble mastering this one character trait for Olivia Benson Mariska Hargitay | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Hargitay has spent an enormous amount of time with her Law & Order character Olivia Benson. She’s played the stern but empathetic detective for 25 seasons, who specialized in helping victims of sexually traumatic crimes. But despite portraying Olivia since 1999, she confided it took many years to nail down the character’s movements. Although not required, it was important for Hargitay to master Olivia’s cop walk.

Law & Order: Svu was a bit of new territory for hip-hop artist Ice-t. When he first met the cast, he noticeably kept a bit of distance. But little did the rapper know he’d be working with his Law & Order for 25 seasons now.

Ice-t couldn’t have known Law & Order was going to last as long as it has when he was first cast. The actor has always shared that he was originally only supposed to be on the show for four episodes.
“Here it is, we’re starting the 22nd season. I can’t really explain it, man,” Ice-t said not too long ago on Straight Up Steve Austin.
But Ice-t doesn’t mind the show’s longevity.

Law & Order: Svu’s Tamara Tunie Takes Us Inside Her Moving Organized Crime Reunion With Chris Meloni
Medical examiner Melinda Warner was only on screen for a few minutes of Thursday’s Law & Order: Organized Crime, but the short scene carried a lot of meaning for longtime Svu fans.
Not only was Tamara Tunie’s return the first time we’ve seen onetime Svu series regular Warner since Svu‘s 500th episode, it marked a quiet moment of… dare we say friendship between the coroner and the ever-more-reflective cop? The scene also allowed Tunie and series lead Chris Meloni, who are friends in real life, a chance to mix it up in the morgue once more.

Law & Order: Svu parted ways with Chris Meloni under some pretty tense circumstances. The actor reprised his role as Elliot Stabler not too long ago for the recent spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime. But if things worked out a certain way, Meloni might’ve been back on Svu much sooner.

Law & Order: Organized Crime has named its fifth showrunner.
Veteran showrunner John Shiban (Ozark, The X-Files) has been tapped to take over the helm of the fourth season of the Dick Wolf procedural. Shiban replaces David Graziano, with the Svu grad taking over the remainder of season three for Sean Jablonski.
Jablonski, who departed the Chris Meloni-led spinoff after creative differences, replaced Bryan Goluboff. The latter stepped in for Barry O’Brien, who was tapped as interim showrunner after original showrunner Ilene Chaiken departed.
