London, Aug 31 (Ians) Coach Gareth Southgate has kept faith with two senior players when naming his 26-man squad for England’s two games during the forthcoming international break.
Southgate included Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson in the squad, despite Maguire remaining out of favour at Manchester United and without an appearance so far this season and Henderson opting to move to Saudi Arabia, which represents a less competitive competition than the Premier League.
The coach has handed a debut call-up to Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and recalled AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori and Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell, who missed the World Cup, while Arsenal’s in-form Eddie Nketiah also gets the nod, reports Xinhua.

London, Aug 28 (Ians) Manchester City narrowly escaped defeat, overcoming Sheffield United 2-1 to clinch the top spot in the Premier League.
Erling Haaland put the reigning champions ahead in the 63rd minute with a robust header, making up for his earlier penalty miss against the post, reports Xinhua.
With Pep Guardiola recuperating from a back surgery in Barcelona, deputy Juanma Lillo took the helm in the City dugout. Still, the team’s strategy remained unchanged. By the time Haaland scored, City had launched 16 shots and earned 10 corners, while Sheffield United had none.
At 85 minutes, Sheffield United’s Jaydon Bogle leveled the score with a forceful shot from City’s right flank, making it 1-1.
However, in the 89th minute, Rodri secured City’s win with a decisive left-footed strike.
In other matches, Liverpool, despite being a man down after Virgil Van Dijk’s red card, clinched a thrilling 2-1 victory against Newcastle.

Exclusive: Joseph Fiennes has scored a winner with playwright James Graham’s knockout stage play Dear England, which will transfer from London’s National Theatre to the West End in the fall.
The play is an uplifting dramatization of Gareth Southgate’s inspirational leadership of the England’s men’s soccer team and has garnered strong reviews.
Dear England will run at the Cameron Mackintosh-owned Prince Edward Theatre in Soho, London for a 14-week season from October 9. National Theatre Productions is producing.
Fiennes will transfer with the drama. He has been praised for capturing Southgate’s determination to reignite the England team’s pride, plus the sense that the bloke’s a darn good egg. England stars such as captain Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling are also played in the show by actors.

London, May 14 (Ians) Southampton were the first team to have their relegation from the Premier League confirmed when they lost 2-0 at home to Fulham.
Southampton’s fourth consecutive defeat and their seventh loss in eight games leaves them with 24 points from 36 matches, unable to catch Everton, who currently sit 17th in the table with 32 points.

Leeds United remain in the bottom three despite a battling 2-2 draw at home with Newcastle United, a Xinhua report said.

London, May 1 (Ians) Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes that Chelsea will be “dangerous opponents” in Tuesday’s match despite sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Chelsea are currently in 12th place in the standings and have struggled to meet expectations this season while Arsenal are at the top of the league table at the moment but have not been at their best in recent weeks.
With a wealth of talent at Frank Lampard’s disposal and the excitement generated whenever the Gunners meet their London rivals, Arteta isn’t taking Chelsea lightly as the team aims to get back to winning ways.
“I don’t know what their approach will be. They are really dangerous because when you look at the individuals that they can put on that field, for sure they have huge threats so we need to be aware of that,” Arteta said in a pre-match press conference.

Madrid, April 11 (Ians) Real Madrid aims to return to business as usual when they take on Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday night.
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti rested key players for Saturday’s match at home to Villarreal and saw how his side lost a thrilling match 3-2, but key players, such as Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Dani Carvajal are all likely to be back against Chelsea, reports Xinhua.
Ferland Mendy is Madrid’s only injury and the only big doubt is whether Nacho Fernandez, David Alaba or Eduardo Camavinga will replace him.
Although he has performed well in midfield in recent weeks, Camavinga could be the favorite, after his excellent display on the left in Madrid’s 4-0 Copa del Rey win away to Barcelona last week.

London, March 17 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate has made several changes to his squad for their Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Italy and Ukraine later this month.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney is rewarded for an excellent season that has seen him score 17 goals, while Chelsea full backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James are also included after having missed out on last year’s FIFA World Cup due to injury.
However, there is no place for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady, Ben White or Callum Wilson, who were all present at the World Cup, while Raheem Sterling misses out through injury, a Xinhua report said.
Toney’s inclusion comes despite facing charges of breaching rules on betting, which could lead to him receiving a lengthy ban, but Southgate backed the powerful striker.

"Looking back in 2018, we didn’t really know what to expect from the group. We went there with belief we could win it, but it was almost a new experience. We got to the semi-finals and everyone was over the moon, but whether we had full belief to go and win the tournament, I am not sure," said the Tottenham striker with Gareth Southgate’s side taking on reigning champions.
"But we backed that up by reaching the final of the Euros and the belief has been growing. We lost in the Euros by a couple of kicks of the ball and we have entered this tournament believing we can win and it is about trying to push on. We go into the (France) game with more belief than we did in 2018," he added.
"We know that we’re a very good team and there are good teams in this tournament.

On Sunday at the Al Bayt Stadium, Gareth Southgate’s side went into the half time break leading 2-0, opening the scoring in the 38th minute and adding a second in injury stoppage time of the opening session.
England netted a third one 13 minutes into the second half to take the game away from Aliou Cisse’s side and set up a quarter-final clash with France, which earlier on Sunday defeated Poland 3-1.
England and France have met twice before at the World Cup, both in group games which England won 2-0 en route to the 1966 title and 3-1 in 1982 and thus France will be looking for a positive result when the two meet on Sunday December 10 at Al Bayt Stadium.

Doha, Nov 22 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate admitted he was a happy man after his side kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 6-2 win against Iran on Monday, but he also insisted they would have to improve if they want to go all of the way in the competition.
England produced an impressive display, full of pace and movement and were rewarded by two goals from Bukayo Saka, along with efforts from Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish.

There is no doubt the Three Lions have one of the best squads in international football, with excellent players — Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford — in every position.
The side led by Kane (29) has all the necessary ingredients to beat all the teams but it will be interesting to see how coach Gareth Southgate utilises these assets in the tournament. The skipper feels England need to believe that they can win that coveted trophy in the Middle East.
"We have to believe we can win it. I look back at England 10, 15 years ago and it was almost [like] we were scared to say we wanted to win it. I think one of the big shifts that we’ve made over the last four or five years with Gareth is not being afraid to say that," Kane told Sky Sports.

London, Nov 10 (Ians) Coach Gareth Southgate on Thursday announced a 26-man England squad for the 2022 football World Cup, including Leicester midfielder James Maddison along with Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.
Both the players have not played for England since 2019, but recent club form has seen them earn a call-up for the FIFA World Cup which begins on November 20 in Qatar.
On including Maddison in the team, Southgate said, “He is playing really well. We think he can give us something slightly different to the attacking players that we’ve got. He’s playing as good as any of the attacking players in this country. He is a little bit different from the others. I think we need that.”
Maddison last played for England in November 2019 while 2020 Wilson’s last international cap came a month before in October 2019.

Madrid, Nov 9 (Ians) A quick look at Group B implies that England should be the clear favourites to breeze through into the last-16 of the FIFA World Cup, and a possible three straight wins will allow Gareth Southgate’s side to gain confidence ahead of the knockout rounds.
However, any England fan will tell you it’s rarely as simple as that, with memories of their struggles in a group comprised of the United States, Algeria and Slovenia in 2010 coming to mind, and a look at other teams in the group also suggests things may not be as straightforward as they seem.
On paper, England have a better squad and record than Wales, the United States and Iran. They qualified for Qatar with no real problems and travel as the European Championship runners-up.
Southgate will build his team around striker and captain Harry Kane, and midfielders Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.

London, Oct 2 (Ians) Goals from Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka ensured derby day delight for Arsenal as the Gunners beat arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 to maintain their top spot in the Premier League table.
Partey’s wonderful strike from distance set Arsenal on their way, and despite a Harry Kane penalty ensuring the sides went in level at half-time, a poacher’s effort from Jesus restored their lead four minutes into the second half.
Emerson Royal was then red carded for the visitors and soon after Xhaka drove in a third to secure a third straight home victory for Arsenal in this fixture for the first time since 2013.
The win helped Arsenal move up to 21 points from eight games — seven wins and one defeat — leading Manchester City by four points. On Sunday, City will have a chance to reduce the margin when they take on arch-rivals Manchester United in a derby.

The win helped Arsenal move up to 21 points from eight games — seven wins and one defeat — leading Manchester City by four points. On Sunday, City will have a chance to reduce the margin when they take on arch-rivals Manchester United in a derby.

Rome, Sep 24 (Ians) England dropped into the League B of UEFA Nations League after a 1-0 away defeat to Italy while Germany were stunned by Hungary with a 1-0 setback on home soil.
England sat bottom with two points in Group 3 of League A before Friday’s game, while Italy ranked third with five points. The two finalists of Euro 2020 played out a goalless tie in the first leg.
Italy entered San Siro without injured Marco Verratti and Sandro Tonali, as Jorginho pulled the string in the midfield and Giacomo Raspadori partnered with West Ham man Gianluca Scamacca up front. Harry Kane spearheaded England’s three-forward line flanked by Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden, reports Xinhua.
It was a tedious first half as both sides failed to create too many opportunities, and the most promising chance emerged in the fourth minute when Scamacca saw his header hit the woodwork.

London, Sep 15 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate has called Brentford striker Ivan Toney into his squad for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League games against Italy and Germany.
However, there is no place for Manchester United duo of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho just two months away from the start of the World Cup.
Southgate’s final squad before naming players who will go to Qatar is always going to be looked at with extra interest. Although Rashford is suffering from a slight injury, Sancho’s place on the plane must now be in serious doubt, reports Xinhua.
26-year-old Toney gets his chance after scoring 17 Premier League goals and giving six assists in just over a season with Brentford. He is an effective penalty taker and also a threat in the air and set-pieces.

London, Aug 31 (Ians) Southampton came from behind to stun Chelsea 2-1 as Adam Armstrong’s goal dealt Thomas Tuchel’s men their second defeat of the Premier League season on Tuesday.
Chelsea hit the front through Raheem Sterling after 23 minutes, but Romeo Lavia’s powerful long-range strike dragged Southampton level five minutes later before Armstrong put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time, reports Dpa. With Reece James missing through illness, Chelsea struggled to create throughout a disjointed performance, and Kai Havertz squandered their best chance to level after the break.
The result saw Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men draw level with Chelsea in the early Premier League table after a lively display, as the Blues’ unconvincing start to the campaign continued.

London, Aug 15 (Ians) Harry Kane scored a 96th-minute equaliser to give Tottenham a point with a 2-2 draw away to Chelsea, before things exploded when both coaches were sent off for an incident after the final whistle.
Chelsea played excellent football and led though Kalidou Koulibaly’s 19th-minute volley, only for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to level for Spurs with 22 minutes left. Reece James put Chelsea in front again in the 77th minute, but Kane saved a point for the visitors as he flicked home from a corner.
Chelsea complained about fouls before both of Tottenham’s goals, and Thomas Tuchel’s frustration appeared to spill over at the final whistle when he seemed to squeeze Spurs’ coach Antonio Conte’s hand extra hard in their post-game handshake and refuse to let go, promoting Conte to react angrily and for them both to be shown red cards.

BBC News has had to apologize after a picture of premier league footballer Raheem Sterling was displayed while airing a report about a completely different footballer arrested for alleged sexual offenses.
On Thursday morning on the BBC News channel, a photograph of Sterling, who had featured in earlier report about a lucrative transfer from Manchester City to Chelsea, appeared on screen behind sports presenter Mike Bushell while he gave an update on the arrest of the other, unidentified footballer.
When alerted to the error later on, the Guardian reports that another presenter on the channel apologized on-air and explained the mistake being down to a “technical error” while emphasizing that Sterling was “wholly unconnected” with the later story.
The BBC said: “In our sports bulletin earlier, owing to a technical error the wrong picture appeared in connection with a story of a Premier League player arrested over alleged sexual offenses.

After decades and decades of defeat, the Three Lions are heading to the Euro 2020 final.
The Harry Kane captained England team beat off a robust challenge from Denmark with a 2-1 win in extra time in the semi-finals of the tournament at home at Wembley on Wednesday. The England football (soccer) team will now face Italy on July 11. The jubilant team won’t have to travel very far as the UEFA final is also being held at the London stadium with distinct home advantage.
This is the first time since 1966 that England has gone right to the cusp of absolute victory. Or as fabled British football commentator Ian Drake said his booth buddy Stewart Robson today: “No one under the age of about 65 will have ever seen England play in a major tournament final.”

England beat Germany in a major soccer tournament for the first time since winning the World Cup in 1966 — and the action scored the biggest UK audience of Euro 2020 to date.

Amsterdam, June 14 (Ians) Gritty Ukraine bounced back from two goals down but Denzel Dumfries's late winner helped the Netherlands snatch a 3-2 win on home soil in Euro 2020 on Sunday.
The third match-day also saw Austria overpower North Macedonia 3-1 and England down Croatia 1-0.
The Dutch, also known as 'Elftal' assumed control from the starting whistle, and they should have got the opener early in the game but Memphis Depay, Dumfries and Georginio Wijnaldum lacked in accuracy, Xinhua reports.

Porto, May 30 (Ians) Kai Havertz's goal earned Chelsea a second Champions League crown nine years after their first with a deserved 1-0 final victory over domestic rivals Manchester City in Porto.

London, May 25 (Ians) Ben White, Ben Godfrey and Aaron Ramsdale received their first England call-ups as Gareth Southgate selected Trent Alexander-Arnold among four right-backs in his provisional European Championship squad.

London, Feb 22 (Ians) Manchester City maintained their 10-point lead at the Premier League after extending their winning run to 18 games with a 1-0 triumph away to Arsenal on Sunday.

London, Feb 8 (Ians) Manchester City have taken a huge step towards the Premier League title with their recent 4-1 win away to Liverpool -- a triumph that owed a large amount to their impressive finishing and two bad errors from Liverpool keeper, Alisson Becker, who gifted their second and third goals with dreadful passes from the back.

It’s not every day the opportunity arises to meet football legends, but now is your chance! In the height of World Cup fever, CharityStars.com is hosting two auctions: one to meet Leo Messi, the other to meet Cristiano Ronaldo.
The highest bidder and a guest will meet Messi at an Fc Barcelona home game. There will also be a chance to watch Messi practice before the game, which is an opportunity typically closed to all except close family and friends. The highest bid currently stands at just over £5,000, so there’s a chance to seal an experience that money can’t buy for very little outlay – while benefitting charity.
Similarly, the highest bidder in the Ronaldo auction will meet the man himself and watch him practice before the match at a Real Madrid home game. The highest bid is almost £8,000, so now is the time to snap up this incredible opportunity.

Some 3.4 billion people — almost half of the world’s 7.6B population — is expected to watch the FIFA World Cup that starts Thursday, as the soccer tournament, which takes place this year in Russia, remains one of the world’s most popular media events.
Latin America is expected to have the largest number of viewers, according to research company GlobalWebIndex, followed by the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and Europe. However, thanks to an embarrassing defeat against Trinidad & Tobago, the U.S. won’t be competing in the World Cup for the first time since 1986, a major blow to one of the largest TV markets in the world (albeit one hamstrung by time differences this time around). It’s thought that less than a quarter of the population in the U.S. will tune in to watch any games, and those may be largely expats and those cheering on the Mexican team.

When the biggest cheer of a 90,000 seater football stadium comes from paper aeroplanes landing on the pitch, it’s fair to say there’s a problem.
That problem being the English national side. I’m getting bored harping on about how the England team fails to progress or even just to impress. If anything, I feel like we’ve gone backwards over the last couple of years.
Sometimes I watch the tv (because you couldn’t pay me to go watch England during the qualifiers) and I just want to scream. Maybe Gareth Southgate should allow some England fans to facetime into the team meetings to express the nation’s frustrations! They need to know what they are putting all the English fans through. With figures nearly exceeding £100,000,000 for a single player it’s beginning to feel that clubs can demand stupid money for any player within their squad. You only have to look at players like Dwight Gayle, Jake Livermore, and Robert Snodgrass who are being bought for £10 million plus. I mean, Crystal Palace bought Jeffery Schlupp for £12 million! Am I missing something here? It’s like money doesn’t have any value within the game anymore.
Of course, there are some transfers that warrant clubs splashing out large amounts of money to get their man. Players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez, and Neymar to name a few.
