Marvel Comics' popular Black, White & Blood imprint has allowed the industry's hottest creators to channel the full ferocity of Marvel's deadliest characters.
Over the last few years, we've seen Wolverine, Deadpool, Moon Knight, Darth Vader, and more unleashed in their own Black, White & Blood titles. Now, it's Spidey's turn to get bloody as we'll return to the wall-crawler's darkest era in Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood this August.
The new series sees all-star creators, including some Spidey storytelling legends, honour the 40th Anniversary of Spider-Man's black costume "black, white & blood? style. Some will reveal never-before-told tales set during the hero's Black Suit era while others explore the costume's legacy and lasting impact on Peter Parker.
Here's what you can look forward to in the debut issue...

The horror and supernatural genre is often a misunderstood one. People in general feel as though horror is a one trick pony, no subtlety, no clever thought or invention, just obvious gore and jumps cares. Just look at the lack of critical respect for someone like Stephen King, who’s books are as good as any fiction writer, if not better. Horror comics, in general, have trod the obvious path. Serial killers, vampires, werewolves, zombies etc etc. Although I have my fair share of House of Mystery and The Unexpected issues, among others, conventional horror stories at their best, I tend to look for more subtlety these days. I like ideas and stories that take a fresh perspective, that can still be eerie and creepy, but also make you think. DC’s Sandman and some of the Vertigo books had that,...

This is one of those books that I have picked up purely due to word of mouth. Issue 1 passed me by, but I started to hear good things, had a look at the first issue, loved it, and here I am reviewing issue 2. The premise for the book is very simple. Doctor Strange has decided, after years of doing pretty much the exact opposite (but let’s not split hairs) to open his own Hogwarts. He, however, calls it Strange Academy. So scoop up a handful of Marvel’s magically inclined characters as teachers, throw in a selection of students both good and bad, and see what happens. I think you can tell by the fact its written by Skottie Young and drawn by Humberto Ramos that realism and seriousness are going to be in relatively short supply.

Marvel might be owned by Disney these days, but you don’t see many Marvel/Disney crossovers. Last week’s issue of Strange Academy, though, had some fun with the House of Mouse’s history by introducing a terrifying version of one of Disney’s most beloved characters – the wisecracking blue Genie from Aladdin.
In Strange Academy #2 by Skottie Young, Humberto Ramos, Edgar Delgado and Clayton Cowle, the students officially start their magical lessons, taught by some of the most notable sorcerers in the Marvel universe. Magik teaches Inferno 101, Man-Thing covers botany, Scarlet Witch tutors chaos magic and Brother Voodoo teaches zombies and enchantments. Their very first class is with the Ancient One, who’s educating them on the history of mystical objects and to start with, he presents them with the Lamp of Kolmycan and summons up a genie.
It’s not a blue Robin Williams or Will Smith-alike...

The parts of our lives that have been disrupted by the Covid-19 epidemic are almost too numerous to count – gatherings have been limited, travel curtailed, and booze is somehow only available as curbside pickup now. The comic book industry is, like so many others, seeing massive, terrifying change, and any prolonged shutdown of social gatherings could change the comics we get and the way we get them forever. In the grander scheme of things, this may seem like a drop in the bucket – we’ll always have Comixology, and comics are increasingly just IP seedlings for cinematic universes. But one glance at Comichron sales figures paints a pretty dire numerical picture: digital sales are running a little behind 10% of total sales volume, and the single issues, trades, and magazines sold to shops by Diamond is a bit more than a half a billion dollars in annual sales.
That’s a lot of money.

As you may be aware, Marvel kicked off their “Fresh Start” initiative not long ago, thus affording readers a variety of highly accessible jumping on points when it comes to enjoying tales featuring their favorite superheroes – or ones they’re just getting into.
Cool as those relaunched books may be, one guy in particular has been stealing a heck of a lot of thunder as of late. In short, it’s thanks to The Return of Wolverine that many True Believers may be overlooking some other options when it comes to writing up their pull lists. Hey, when one of the most iconic characters in all of fiction comes back from the dead, wouldn’t you naturally assume for at least a few people to take notice?
That said, there’s no surprise being shown on our end when it comes to the House of Ideas celebrating this momentous occasion...

New creative teams. New series. New directions. New beginnings… It all kicks off this June with Deadpool #1 from the awesome Skottie Young and artist Nic Klein. Said series editor Jake Thomas: “Deadpool’s gone through A Lot these past few years, and while he’s accomplished a lot, the merc with the mouth may have taken his eye off his mercenary business for a bit too long. So how does a soldier for hire get business back up and running? The only way Deadpool knows how: Maximum effort, reasonable rates.”
“Skottie Young has one of the wildest, most unhinged creative minds I’ve ever worked with, and I mean that as the sincerest compliment I can muster,” Thomas continues. “His ideas for Wade are flying fast and furious, this book is going to be a non-stop chaos party as Wade battles his way back on top of the mercenary game using every dirty trick,...
