Opposable Thumbs: How Siskel & Ebert Changed Movies Forever by Matt Singer (G.P. Putnam’s Sons)
As an adolescent in the early 1990s, one of my Sunday night rituals was recording that week’s episode of “Siskel & Ebert”––it aired late-night in Buffalo, NY––and watching it the following day. The internet was in its infancy, so the reviews of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were both a lifeline to what was happening in film and a cinematic education. It is no exaggeration to say that I learned how to discuss movies thanks to Gene and Roger. For my generation, then, the release of...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Is This a Trip… or a Test?
Whether you’re dodging death at a White Lotus or camping with “The Parent Trap” twins, the vacation is a notorious killer of relationships. With every fork in the road comes the possibility for conflict, and the collateral damage can be catastrophic to even the most solid connections. Hunger, exhaustion, and inconvenience will spell break up faster than you can text your therapist, “Am I Really ending my marriage on this flight to Toledo?” And with Labor Day Weekend upon us, it’s...

At long last, a new Paul Thomas Anderson film is now in theaters––to be exact, just a few until Christmas Day. Whether you have the opportunity to see the film now or you have to wait another month, a new treat has now arrived that everyone can enjoy: the official soundtrack.
Coming out on December 10 on vinyl but arriving digitally today, the 20-track album includes cuts by Nina Simone, David Bowie, The Doors, Sonny & Cher, Chuck Berry, Donovan, Paul McCartney, Gordon Lightfoot, Taj Mahal, Mason Williams, and many more. Last year we partnered with Cinephile for a series of livestreams aimed at raising money for various film-related charities. The resulting series, Cinephile Game Night, aired twice-weekly for 36 episodes throughout the spring and summer featuring 175 guests raising thousands of dollars for 20+ charitable organizations and funds. We are excited to announce that the show will be returning as a monthly series beginning this month.
Cinephile Game Night: Volume II will return next Monday February 8th at 9pm/6pt with Fangoria & Friends. The all-star lineup includes Phil Noble Jr. (Fangoria), Scott Wampler (The Kingcast), Eric Vespe (The Kingcast), and Vanessa Guerrero (El Rey Network) playing in support of Austin Pets Alive. You can catch the episode live on our Twitter feed or the next day embedded right here. Viewers are invited to tune in and follow along with the cinema-related fun!

The holidays are upon us, so whether you looking for film-related gift ideas or simply want to pick up some of the finest the year had to offer in the category for yourself, we have a gift guide for you. Including must-have books on filmmaking, the best from The Criterion Collection, Kino Lorber, and more home video picks, subscriptions, magazines, music, and more, dive in below.
Blu-ray Box Sets
There’s no better way to kick off a gift guide than the most prized possession/obsession of any cinephile: a gorgeous Blu-ray box set to dive into. The Criterion Collection leads the charge once again this year with a number of highlights, my favorite of which is Éric Rohmer’s Six Moral Tales collection, featuring astounding works by the French New Wave master that make a great pairing with another one of his cohorts: Agnès Varda.

For many of us, the 2020 version of the holidays is going to be a more homebound one than usual. What better time to build your physical-media collection with DVDs, Blu-rays, and books to help keep the season bright?
Blu-ray debuts
This year saw the first release of several Christmas favorites on Blu-ray, from Paul Feig’s 2019 sleeper hit “Last Christmas” (Universal Home Entertainment) to the first North American hi-def releases of the moving and funny anime classic “Tokyo Godfathers” (Gkids/Shout Factory), a contemporary adaptation of the Christmas-set Western tale “3 Godfathers,” and the all-star WWII drama “A Midnight Clear” (Shout Selects). The latter, a 1992 adaptation of the William Wharton novel from writer-director Keith Gordon, features a cast of up-and-coming actors who would eventually become filmmakers themselves, including Ethan Hawke, Peter Berg, Frank Whaley, and Gary Sinise.

Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks by Adam Nayman (Abrams)
Few film writers balance deep insight and cogent prose as effortlessly as Torontonian Adam Nayman. The latest from the author of Showgirls: It Doesn’t Suck and The Coen Brothers: This Book Really Ties the Films Together is his best yet—a gorgeous, photo-packed study of the films of Paul Thomas Anderson. Masterworks is one of the most noteworthy cinema-themed books of 2020 and, without question, the deep dive Anderson and his films deserve. Opening with There Will Be Blood and moving through all of PTA’s features and music-video work,...

Since we’re all going to be spending a little more time at home for a while, Cinephile and The Film Stage are proud to present Cinephile Game Night, a twice-weekly livestream series that aims to bring some attention to film-related charities (and beyond) during the Covid-19 crisis.
Each evening will feature The Film Stage crew, including Jordan Raup, Conor O’Donnell, Dan Mecca, and Cinephile creator Cory Everett, and a rotating roster of special guests as we test our knowledge of movie trivia in this online version, adapted for our current self-isolated times. With each show lasting about an hour, we’ll square off and play a few rounds of Cinephile: A Card Game, including Filmography, Movie-Actor, and Six Degrees.
Viewers are invited to tune in and follow along with the cinema-related fun! Each night, we’ll feature a relief fund or charity to spotlight. If you are viewing and donate,...
