Thanks to a buzzing synth line and Zach Condon’s operatic vocals, “The Tern” feels like a new age hymn of sorts. The artist explained how he wrote the song in a statement, from its electronic instrumental to its “It’s not so easy” refrain.
“The base of this song comes from an old Roland synthesizer and drum machine part which I had lying around from a previous Berlin session,” Condon shared. “The lyrics I improvised on the spot and finished the song off by adding layers of church organs and hand percussion. I stacked the parts high despite always being afraid of overdoing it. Bruce Springsteen has penned an original song for Rebecca Miller’s new film “She Came to Me,” which will have its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival this week.
The song, “Addicted to Romance,” was written and performed by Springsteen, and will be heard by audiences for the first time during the movie’s Feb. 16 screening, when it plays over the end credits.
Romantic comedy “She Came to Me” stars Peter Dinklage as a moody classical composer struggling with writer’s block. When he meets a quirky tugboat captain (Marisa Tomei), he finds the muse for his next opus and is encouraged by his therapist wife (Anne Hathaway) to make his big comeback. The National paid tribute to late musician Daniel Johnston at a show at the White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas by performing a mash-up of their own “I Am Not in Kansas” with his classic tune “Devil Town.” The musicians took the opportunity to honor the singer, who died of a heart attack at age 58, in a clearly emotional way.
