The eight film Leprechaun horror franchise is about to get a ninth installment, with Lionsgate recently hiring director Felipe Vargas (Milk Teeth) to “reimagine” the franchise.
But what can we expect from this next installment in the long-running saga? Felipe Vargas sat down with Splattercast ahead of St. Patrick’s Day to tease the new movie.
Vargas tells the show, “I’m so honored to be on that project. It’s such a cool franchise. To me what makes the franchise so special is that it really is limitless. It doesn’t need to be grounded. It can just be gory, sexy, crazy.”
“We’re still figuring out that tone,” he continues. “And the balance between horror and comedy. I would love for it to be scary as hell and also hilarious. I think we’re going back to a lot of the roots of Leprechaun in a lot of different ways,...

My acting professor told us not to expect to get anywhere in showbiz until we’d given it 10 years. He was right.
It was right at that 10 year mark (when I was 32) that I was able to say goodbye to my day jobs as a makeup counter girl and a social media manager. I could finally pay the rent with my acting and screenwriting gigs alone!
Meanwhile in Chicago, my best friend had a high-powered career in marketing, a husband, a four bedroom house, a 401k, two kids and a black lab.
See, Time is but a construct in L.A. It’s the land of Samuel L. Jackson getting his big break at 45. George Clooney tying the knot for the first time at 53. And congrats to 80-year-old Bobby De Niro on his brand new baby!
Liberating, right? As long as you don’t read the fine print.

Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company have won a competitive bidding war for an adaptation of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” The film, to be based on Barbara Robinson’s popular book, will be penned and directed by Dallas Jenkins, the creator, director and producer of “The Chosen.”
“The Best Christmas Pageant,” which has sold over seven million copies since its publication in 1972, centers on the Herdmans – apparently the very worst kids in the history of the world. However, they end up taking over their town’s local Christmas pageant. Possible spoilers – it just might accidentally teach the community the true meaning of Christmas.
Kingdom Story’s Kevin Downes, Daryl Lefever, Andrew Erwin and Jon Erwin will produce alongside McDaniel and Thomas. Jenkins will executive produce alongside Molen, Mark Kendell, and Tony Young. Production begins next month in Canada. The film will debut theatrically over the 2024 holiday season.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Lionsgate has given the greenlight to a new film in the Leprechaun franchise – but it doesn’t sound like this one will see Warwick Davis reprising his iconic role, nor will it be a follow-up to Leprechaun Returns, where Linden Porco played the title character. Instead, the project is being described as a “reimagining”, with Felipe Vargas, director of the award-winning short film Milk Teeth, on board to direct.
Mike Van Waes, who wrote the novel Peeves and has worked on the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch movie, has written the screenplay for the new Leprechaun. Plot details are being kept under wraps. All we know right now is that Lionsgate is aiming to “reimagine the horror title for a new generation of moviegoers“.

There have been eight films in the Leprechaun franchise to date, with 2018’s Leprechaun Returns most recently heading back to the original movie’s timeline in the wake of reboot Leprechaun Origins four years prior. As an update to that scoop, THR reports this afternoon that Lionsgate has now hired director Felipe Vargas to “reimagine” the Leprechaun franchise.

Lionsgate has merged its Production and Acquisitions groups under a single Content banner, to be headed by Motion Picture Group president Nathan Kahane.
Joe Drake, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair just made the announcement.
“Lionsgate has grown aggressively over the last few years,” said Drake. “We now release approximately 50 new films every year across our wide theatrical release business, from our tentpoles like John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes to our more targeted theatrical business with movies like Sisu and Fall, including a vibrant multiplatform release pipeline that debuts over 30 films annually. In a business where content is more valuable than ever, our strategy is to meet audiences across the globe wherever they consume entertainment with the movies they want to see. Bringing internal development, acquisitions, and co-productions together in one unit enables us to reach the full potential of our philosophy and strategy as a studio.

Lionsgate’s motion picture group has finished another restructuring under chairman Joe Drake, with the studio now unifying its film production and acquisition groups under one content banner to be led by president Nathan Kahane.
In the new structure, Lionsgate’s Jason Constantine has been named co-president, Motion Picture Group, after serving as president of acquisitions and co-productions and driving acquisitions of the John Wick, Expendables and Saw franchise. Constantine will report to Kahane while overseeing creative strategy in both film production and acquisitions.
The reorganization follows around a dozen employees in the Motion Picture Group being laid off in April, or around 3 percent of the division, which totals about 400 employees.
The Motion Picture Group overhaul leaves Drake and Kahane in charge of the division. Drake returned to Lionsgate in October 2017 as the studio acquired Good Universe, the production and distribution company he co-founded and ran alongside partner Kahane.

When discussing the burgeoning streaming landscape, Sandra Stern, recently promoted to vice chairman of Lionsgate Television Group, observed that popular TV franchises even from long-ago decades can stop the “churn” — that is, subscribers who sign up in order to watch one highly promoted movie or TV series and then drop the subscription after they watch it.
Stern and other top executives at the company joined TheWrap for Tuesday’s virtual Power Women Summit (Pws) panel entitled “The Women of Lionsgate: Brands & Franchises in Today’s Media Landscape,” sponsored by Lionsgate. Stern said the value of producing TV franchises came into sharp focus during the pandemic as stay-at-home viewers entered into the premium subscription service game.
“The big concern for all streamers, for all paid platforms, is churn,” Stern said. “There’s something we must watch [so]we sign up for platform, and once we’ve seen it, we tune it out.

Lionsgate is ready to hit the mean streets and consume floor chicken dinners for Derek Kolstad‘s adaptation of the Sega video game Streets of Rage. Kolstad, who created the John Wick franchise, is writing the rough-and-tumble adaptation based on the ’90s 2-D beat ’em-up brawler.
Brady Fujikawa and Jon Humphrey oversee the project for Lionsgate, with Shuji Utsumi and Toru Nakahara supervising for Sega. Dmitri M. Johnson manages dj2 Entertainment’s involvement, with Tony Shaw leading for Escape Artists.

“The game has a rich world and narrative, and we’re thrilled to be reuniting with Derek to bring it to life,” added Erin Westerman, President of Production at Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

Woody Harrelson is in negotiations to lead the ensemble of “Sailing,” a new comedy musical by “Rock of Ages” creator Chris D’Arienzo, for Lionsgate.

Olivia Cooke, one of the stars of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, will star in Breeders, a horror project just acquired by Lionsgate that will mark the feature directorial debut of rising fright filmmaker Kelsey Bollig.
Adam McKay, the filmmaker behind Netflix hit Don’t Look Up and an executive producer on HBO’s Winning Time, is one of the originators of the idea and is producing via his Hyperobject Industries banner along with the company’s Todd Schulman.
The logline is being kept locked in the Lionsgate vault, but one source has described the project as a social horror-thriller that is tonally in the vein of Fresh, a dating-gone-wrong thriller starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan that debuted on Hulu in March.

Tom Blyth is headed to Panem. The actor, best known for “Billy the Kid” and “The Gilded Age,” has been cast as young President Coriolanus Snow in Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
The movie is based on the 2020 book of the same name, which is set decades before the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games.” That means the original franchise’s beloved heroine, a role that propelled Jennifer Lawrence to superstardom, does not appear in “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” which instead centers on the man (portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the first films) who eventually becomes the tyrannical leader of the dystopia known as Panem. The prequel story takes place as an 18-year-old Snow is chosen to be mentor during the 10th Hunger Games, a televised event in which teenagers are chosen via lottery to fight to the death.

Jennifer Grey is returning to the world of Dirty Dancing.
Deadline reported Monday that a new movie will be directed by Jonathan Levine.
It serves as a sequel to the 1987 original, which starred Grey and the late Patrick Swayze.
The original made almost 215 million from a 4.5 million budget, making it one of the most profitable movies out there.
The success of the movie led to a 2004 prequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, as well as a stage version that sold out in several countries.
A made-for-tv remake released in 2017, starring Abigail Breslin and Colt Prattes.
The new flick finds Frances "Baby" Houseman returning to Kellerman's in the 1990s.
A new love story is set to take center stage, with a coming-of-age romance featuring a young woman at the summer camp.
According to Deadline, Baby's "own journey will intertwine with this to create a multi-layered narrative."

He’s been hired by Lionsgate to direct a sequel to 1987’s “Dirty Dancing,” with Jennifer Grey set to reprise her classic role as Frances “Baby” Houseman. No word as to whether she’ll be in a corner.
Prior to finding himself in the director’s chair, Levine was already attached to the project as a producer. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Elizabeth Chomko. The follow-up film, also titled “Dirty Dancing,” is expected to go into production later this year for release in 2024. International sales will launch later this month in Cannes.
Lionsgate announced back in 2020 that another “Dirty Dancing” story was in the works. Little is known about the next chapter, but Levine has hinted the sequel will include music from the original movie, as well as ’90s hip-hop.

The film draws from Lurie’s own experience graduating from West Point in 1984 before going on to serve four years as a Combat Arms officer in the U.S. Army. The filmmakers are also requesting to film on location at West Point in New York, though no film has been shot there since the 1950s.

Exclusive: After recently committing to Under Cover, Lionsgate has entered into a producing deal with actor-producer Cole Sprouse to develop a new unidentified project for the studio.
“I’m a huge fan of Joe Drake, Nathan Kahane, Erin Westerman, and the entire team at Lionsgate,” said Sprouse. “They’ve taken a front seat in the cultivation of my career, and I’m grateful for that confidence and belief. Lionsgate has been incredibly receptive to what I want to accomplish as a young filmmaker, and I’m comforted to be teaming up with a group of like-minded creatives as we navigate those waters.”
The deal builds on the box office success of Sprouse’ 2019 hit Five Feet Apart, which was produced by CBS Films and distributed by Lionsgate. It’s been over a decade since the last Mark Romanek-directed feature, the Kazuo Ishiguro adaptation Never Let Me Go. Since its 2010 release, he’s become attached to rom-coms, thrillers, and even a Dan Brown adaptation––however none have come to fruition. Now another project is on his plate and one that will hopefully see the light of day.
Deadline reports he’s attached to direct the horror film Mother Land at Lionsgate. Scripted by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, the story follows a family that has been haunted by an evil spirit for years. Their safety and their surroundings come into question when one of the children questions if the evil is real.
While that logline is sparse, we’re looking forward to seeing Romanek return to feature filmmaking after a decade of TV (including Vinyl and Tales From the Loop) as well as music videos featuring Beyoncé,...
