- Composer
- Music Department
As a composer, musician, and music post-production filmmaker, Ian J. Vogler's work portfolio is all things music. Ian is a multi-instrumentalist and records himself on his scores. He is an active narrative shorts programmer for Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah and has been a member of ASCAP since 2013.
He received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Film Music Composition at the School of Filmmaking campus of University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA; Winston-Salem, NC) in 2015. Some of his instructors include visual media composers Chris Heckman and Bruno Louchouarn, Cinema Studies professor and filmmaker Dale M. Pollock, and concert composer Kenneth Frazelle.
Ian graduated from Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA) in 2013 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition with saxophone performance concentration. He has had original works performed and premiered by students and ensembles, ranging from solo work to chamber and orchestral. Ian studied composition under Dr. Larry A Lipkis, classical saxophone studies with Dr. Neil Wetzel, film music and audio recording with Artist-in-Residence Australian composer Sean O'Boyle AM, and piano with Dan DeChellis.
Ian's first recognition as a composer was in 2008 and 2009, when he won the high school division of the "Pictures" Music Composition Competition, sponsored by the NJ Arts Collective. Alike with how Modest Mussorgsky composed Pictures at an Exhibition, Ian's two works were inspired by selected artworks from New Jersey artists and written for a selected ensemble. In 2009, his piece The Bridge was premiered by Exit 9 Percussion Ensemble (percussion quartet), and in 2008 with Sunset premiered by The Halcyon Trio (piano, B-flat clarinet, and viola).
