- On March 21, 2012, David Tennant adopted Ty before marrying Ty's mother, Georgia Tennant, and his name was changed by deed poll from Ty Moffett to Ty Tennant. His name has been changed twice. His name on his original birth certificate is Ty Peter Martin-Moffett. Some weeks later, his mother had his name changed to Ty Peter Moffett, removing his father's surname.
- When he was interviewed by his mother in 2008, Ty was asked who his favorite Doctor Who (2005) Doctor was and Ty answered it was David Tennant, because he runs so fast. David Tennant later became Ty's stepfather.

- Ty is well-known to fans of Doctor Who (2005). His maternal grandfather, Peter Davison, and adoptive father, David Tennant, played the Fifth and 10th Doctors, respectively, and his mother, Georgia Tennant, played the 10th Doctor's daughter in one episode. Ty himself interviewed his mother for a video posted on the official Doctor Who website and acted in his grandfather's 50th anniversary webcast The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot (2013).

- Ty's maternal grandfather, Peter Davison, played the Fifth Doctor in Doctor Who (1963). His stepfather, David Tennant, played the 10th Doctor in Doctor Who (2005).
- Ty is brother of Olive Tennant (born 2011) and Wilfred Tennant (born 2013).
- Nephew of Louis Davison and Joel James Davison, sons of his grandfather Peter Davison and Davison's third wife Elizabeth Heery.
