Remake of Pang Ho-Cheung's 2004 movie “Beyond Our Ken”, “Thorns of Beauty” is a story about an unlikely erotic triangle, which has been adapted in a Japanese setting by Hideo Jojo, who is in charge of both the direction and the script (along Kaori Sawai). The movie opened in Japan in January and now finds its place in Nippon Connection.

The themes of Rikiya Imaizumi’s films are en vogue right now, tackling slow-developing love stories, and indeed their fallout, in a dialogue-heavy approach. With slick, stylish coffee shop and urbane apartment settings, “By the Window” has a lot in common with many modern Japanese novels, as well as the films of fellow director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, a director whose career his has paralleled.
Shigemi (Goro Inagaki) is a freelance literary critic, married to editor Sae (Yuri Nakamura). Tatsushi Ohmori made an impressive transition from arthouse filmmaker to cineplex crowd pleaser. Known for violent disruptions of conventions both cinematic and social, he created his own style, starting in 2005 with the debut film “The Whispering of Gods”. His latest production, “Goodbye Cruel World”, is a heist movie about a group of people who rob a Yakuza gang. Betrayal, love, and revenge are mixed together and crowned with an A-List cast.

"Beauty and the Beast" truly is a tale as old as time, and has been retold in countless ways, like the Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton TV series of the same name, the Fran Drescher comedy "The Beautician and the Beast," the teen rom-drama "Beastly," or even in an episode of "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater." Recently, legendary Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda delivered "Belle," a magnificent animated sci-fi fantasy film that thrusts the tale out of the world of old and into the techno future.
The story takes place in the not-so-distant future where the internet has evolved into a legitimate virtual reality called U, where avatars are created by users' scanned biometric information. A teenager named Suzu creates an avatar named Belle who becomes a pop superstar, but everything changes when her virtual concert is interrupted by the seemingly undefeatable fighter The Dragon (or "The Beast"), who she quickly becomes infatuated with.

The new Miyazaki. That’s a description I’ve heard applied to Mamoru Hosoda over and over, and it’s never sat well with me. Notwithstanding that Hosoda has expressed critical feelings about Miyazaki’s depiction of women, or my own apathy about Miyazaki’s films, Hosoda isn’t the new anybody, nor does he need to be. He’s the first Mamoru Hosoda, and across his six solo features, he’s established a strong authorial voice and, for my money, stands out as one of the best and most exciting filmmakers working today, and not just in animation.
Belle, like Hosoda’s previous films, takes a gigantic sci-fi concept and boils it down to a tiny personal story. The setting is contemporary, but the internet seems to be dominated by an app called U, a social network which, through body sharing technology (think a less gross take...

Based on the manga from Shūzō Oshimi, “Flowers of Evil” follows a young student named Takao. After stealing the gym clothes of his crush, a troubled student, Sawa witnesses the act and blackmails him. The two forge a contract which leaves Takao at the mercy of Sawa’s outbursts and bizarre requests.

After suffering at the hands of Sawa and her requests, Takao starts to grow an odd fascination for the girl, and he begins to develop romantic feelings for her. The two plot a grand statement to show the town of “s***-bugs” the dark underbelly of their quaint existence. The film follows Takao’s journey with Sawa, as well as his life struggling with the memories after they part ways.

Director: Kôji Shiraishi. Writers: Takashi Shimizu, Kôji Suzuki. Cast: Mizuki Yamamoto, Tina Tamashiro and Aimi Satsukawa. There have been a combined total of twenty plus films, set in the Ringu and Ju-on film universes. Spanning eighteen years, these villains have killed untold numbers victims. Now, both cursed spirits face each other in Sadako v Kayako! Shot in Japan, the film was put together after an April Fool's Joke went viral. And, this outing is lighter in tone, compared to the earlier, more horrifying titles. This film fan was reminded of Hong-jin Na's The Wailing (2015), while watching this title. In both films, shamans are powerless to fight the supernatural. Still, the outcome of Sadako v Kayako can be predicted from a mile away. There is no way these iconic, money-making characters can take a final sleep. Sadako v Kayako is a bit predictable, but it is also an entertaining film.

In the battle of horror film icons, it is fair to say that the dream match-up was of course Freddy vs. Jason. A fun film, it could never live up to the expectation created around it, which could be a problem faced with Sadako vs. Kayako. Pitting The Ring against The Grudge is something of a dream match, but can it live up to expectation?
When the cursed video tape is once again watched, two friends find themselves on a race against time to stop the curse. "You must never go near there." Happy Friday the 13th! Celebrate the day with this trailer for Sadako vs Kayako, a Japanese horror mashup pitting the evil ghosts The Ring and Grudge series against each other. It was inevitable that one day we'd see these two long-black-haired evil spirits battling in the same movie, like how it was obvious one day they'd make Freddy vs Jason. And just like that movie, this seems to be pretty bad, despite their best efforts to make something fun. The cast includes Mizuki Yamamoto, Tina Tamashiro, Aimi Satsukawa, and Misato Tanaka. This looks very silly, but thankfully not as terrible as the Scary Movie spoofs, but I'm still not sure. The rock song they use in the trailer seems like an odd choice. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Kôji Shiraishi's Sadako vs Kayako, direct from YouTube: A girl (Mizuki Yamamoto) after...

The idea of different canonical figures from horror clashing in one realm has left the circulation of pure fan fiction since 2003’s Freddy Vs. Jason (yeah, I mentioned it). Now, J-horror is getting its own iteration of evil against evil in the form of Sadako vs. Kayako, which pits the antagonistic forces from Ringu and The Grudge in a demonic gladiator match. However, as it must always go, humans are in danger, too. So, a girl (Mizuki Yamamoto) watches a cursed video tape In a haunted house (I mean, come on, that’s a rookie mistake x2!) and whoosh, she’s caught between a demon and a…demon in a fight for her life.
Borrowing iconography from both franchises Sadako vs. Kayako seems to embrace a silly tone while still trying to startle its audience. Horror and humor is a fine line to walk, and it remains to be seen...

For 10 years, Five Flavours Film Festival has been presenting the best cinema from Asia, its meanings and contexts. Initially, the Festival focused solely on Vietnamese films, but it evolved to become a yearly review of the cinema of East and Southeast Asia, the only such event in the country.
The 10th edition is held in Warsaw, on November 16-23 (Muranów and Kinoteka cinemas), and in Wrocław on November 18-24 (New Horizons Cinema).
This year’s edition of Five Flavours is the biggest in history – it presents over 40 productions. The program combines artistic and commercial cinema, allowing the audience to experience the best Asian films have to offer. On the one hand, there are the intimate stories with a social angle, on the other – fresh, innovative blockbusters, filled with the sheer joy of cinematic creation, attracting millions of viewers in their homelands.

Here’s where I admit something I generally don’t talk about: I’m not the world’s biggest fan of either Ringu or Ju-On: The Grudge. Sure, I’ve seen both, and Ringu did manage to creep me out some 15 years ago now, but honestly, they aren’t franchises I revisit. The same could be said for their American counterparts. While The Ring is easily one of the best remakes of the last two decades, the initial creepiness that came from my first viewing has worn off by now, and I flat out disliked The Grudge when I saw it on opening weekend. I’m an awful person, yes.
With that said, I wasn’t all that excited about seeing Sadako vs Kayako while at Fantastic Fest, but by the end, director Kôji Shiraishi won me over with his tongue-in-cheek approach to these two now iconic horror villains. Sadako...
