My favorite thing about being Jewish — and it’s just so hard to pick between classic hits like “unleavened bread,” “having shoulder hair at 15,” and “being used by right-wing nationalists as an excuse to justify the same kind of genocide that tends to be inflicted upon us every other century or so” — is that I’ve always felt like the religion and its attendant culture places an unusual emphasis on being alive. Six thousand years of trying not to die can do that to you. We don’t believe in heaven, and we don’t believe in hell; when someone passes, we say “may their memory be a blessing,” and when we pray on Yom Kippur (one of the few days of the year that most of us go to shul), we only ask God to write our names in the Book of Life so that we can spend another...

Writer-director Nathan Silver is harnessing a crisis of faith for his irreverent comedy “Between the Temples,” debuting at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
Silver, who has written and directed nine feature films and has had projects premiere at NYFF, Venice, Tribeca, AFI, Locarno, and Rotterdam, is making his Sundance debut with the feature. Silver was previously rejected by Sundance many times before “Between the Temples” landed in the U.S. Dramatic Competition programming lineup, his first time competing at the festival. “Between the Temples” is also among IndieWire’s must-see films at this year’s festival.
In “Between the Temples,” a cantor (Jason Schwartzman) in a crisis of faith finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher reenters his life as his new adult bat mitzvah student (Carol Kane).
Robert Smigel, Annie Hamilton, Madeline Weinstein, and “Triangle of Sadness” alum Dolly de Leon also star.

After three years of virtual and hybrid event offerings, the Sundance Film Festival is set to celebrate its fortieth anniversary with its most robust in-person edition of the festival since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. While online offerings will still be available to those who wish to participate from home, with the official online viewing window opening on Thursday, January 25. That lineup will include at-home screenings of the five competition sections (including Next).
On the ground, however, seems like the place to be. As ever, this year’s festival boasts a wide variety of new films from some of our favorite filmmakers, plus an assortment of rising stars, new talents to keep an eye on, and perhaps a few surprises.
This year’s program includes new films from Steven Soderbergh, Debra Granik, David and Nathan Zellner, Richard Linklater, Lana Wilson, Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, Dawn Porter, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden,...

Earlier this year, The National superfan, David Letterman, said that there is “nobody cooler” than the band’s frontman, Matt Berninger. Now, the two have come together for a 27-minute-long conversation, in which they discuss The National’s latest albums, Berninger’s creative process, shared experiences of depression, and more.
Arriving as both a podcast and a YouTube video, the chat begins with Letterman interviewing Berninger, but soon develops into a full-fledged conversation, with both men sharing stories from their respective time in the spotlight. Letterman talks a bit about seeing The National live this past year, and praises the band’s tightness. Then, the two discuss the band’s 2023 releases: First Two Pages of Frankenstein and Laugh Track.
Touching on the creative origin of those records, Berninger steered the conversation towards the depression he experienced during the pandemic, which has informed his recent writing. Relating to the experiences, Letterman...

FX released the official trailer for “American Horror Stories” Season 3, the spin-off of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series “American Horror Story.” The spin-off features a different horror story in each episode.
The trailer revealed that “Real Housewives” alum Lisa Rinna will star in the “Tapeworm” episode of Season 3, which premieres Oct. 26. The official logline for that installment reads, “An up-and-coming model will stop at nothing in her hunger for success.” The episode was written by Joe Baken and directed by Alexis Martin Woodall.
“Smize for the camera, sweetie,” Rinna’s character says in the trailer. She later responds to a young patient’s concern about a monster inside of her with the question, “But are you hungry?”
Alongside Rinna, the “Tapeworm” cast includes Laura Kariuki, Hazel Graye and Rob Yang.
From the trailer, it looks like Yang prescribes Kariuki’s model a tapeworm to help her lose weight for her modeling career.

The National’s Matt Berninger has confirmed that he is still working on a long-gestating sitcom with his director/actor brother, Tom Berninger. In an interview with NME, he spilled details about the semi-autobiographical series, including its working title: Dos Apes.
According to Berninger, he tabled the project while dealing with writer’s block and depression during lockdown, but now it’s back on. “Not unlike Frankenstein, a lightning bolt has started its heart again!” he said. “It’s called Dos Apes, and with the pandemic, we had to put it down. Dos Apes is alive, and that’s all I can say. There was nothing happening because of the writers strikes and stuff like that, but we’ll see. I’m not going to drown in projects like I was before, but that it is one of them that I really want to do and it might happen.”

To the horror enthusiasts eager for a fresh cinematic experience, may I introduce: Dark Windows. Alex Herron (Leave) returns to the director’s chair for his second feature film, crafting a narrative that promises both depth and dread. Fans will recognize the up-and-coming Annie Hamilton, celebrated for her roles in The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020) and Inventing Anna (2022).
The film’s narrative delves into the lives of four teenagers – Tilly (Anna Bullard), Monica (Annie Hamilton), Peter (Rory Alexander), and Allison (Grace Binford Sheene). Their youthful journey takes a tragic turn when a car crash claims Allison’s life. The tragedy casts a shadow over Allison’s memorial, where her grieving uncle bitterly confronts the trio, placing the weight of her demise squarely on their shoulders. Seeking refuge from the blame and the engulfing grief, Monica proposes an escape to her grandparents’ summerhouse, nestled in the tranquil countryside. It’s a...

‘Drib’ Review: Brett Gelman Stars In a Bitter and Bizarre Mockumentary Satire of Branding Gone Wrong
Okay, so let’s establish the facts about “Drib,” an unclassifiable meta-documentary satire that burns down the marketing industry and everyone in it: In 2014, a Los Angeles advertising company flew over a stunt comic/performance artist named Amir Asgharnejad (born in Iran, raised in Norway) in the hopes that he might anchor a high-concept advertisement for an unnamed energy drink company. Internet famous at the time thanks to a series of viral videos in which he gets the shit kicked out of him by strangers he antagonized on the street, Amir was hired to replicate his beatdowns as part of a broader content initiative of some kind. The plan hadn’t been fully approved, and the agency didn’t know that all of the assailants in Amir’s videos were paid accomplices, but the idea was to shoot the risqué footage, “leak” the faux-vérité spots to the media as part of a “cancelled” campaign,...

If you watch the trailer below and end up being caught off guard, rest assured, you’re not alone. “Drib,” written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, and slated to debut at the SXSW Film Festival, is a surreal documentary and fictional hybrid. Starring Amir Asgharnejad, Brett Gelman, Annie Hamilton and Adam Pearson, the film takes is a harshly skewering look at consumerism culture and the advertising world that works hard at making sure it sells buyers products that are at best ineffective, and at worst deadly.
