I always like when an actor hooks up with the right filmmaker. Often, it can lead to great things. For Mark Wahlberg, teaming up with director Peter Berg a few years ago led to a fantastic film in Lone Survivor. Later this week, they pair up again for Deepwater Horizon, a movie that could well be of some note. Later on this year, they’ll be together again for a more overt awards player in Patriot’s Day, but that’s for another day. Tomorrow, we get their take on the famous oil spill tragedy, focusing on some of the heroism that went down on that day. It could be in line to become an under the radar hit, so watch out. The film is a look at the disaster in April of 2010 on an offshore oil rig. Called the Deepwater Horizon, as you might imagine, the rig would explode...

Deepwater Horizon is a viciously intense disaster film engulfed by the flames of greed and ego – and actual, physical flames. Despite already knowing the film’s infamous outcome, director Peter Berg still manages to deliver a tragic, exciting retelling of the worst oil crisis in Us history. This is no action film – Berg does well to highlight every ill-advised instruction and heroic showing of humanity, focusing solely on survival. Scene after scene, we can only sit and shake our heads as inevitability inches closer, enraged by the honest depiction of corporate stupidity shown by every Bp “Company Man” aboard the Deepwater Horizon.
Mark Wahlberg stars as technician Mike Williams, second-hand to rig top-dog, Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell). Upon their arrival on the Deepwater Horizon, Jimmy is informed that Bp executives had executed orders without proper testing – championed by company man Donald Vidrine (John Malkovich). Jimmy is not thrilled by the directive,...

With Peter Berg fully committed to directing based-on-reality disaster drama Deepwater Horizon, the cast is beginning to swell. Variety reports that Kurt Russell is now officially on board the film, with Maze Runner star Dylan O’Brien in talks. The movie, which also features Mark Wahlberg and rising star Gina Rodriguez, charts the events on the Bp oil rig in the 48 hours leading up to the 2010 disaster and the day itself. The behind-the-scenes tale will highlight stories of real-life heroism around the incident, which were not made public at the time but appeared in the script’s source material, a New York Times article entitled 'Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hour'. The paper’s piece chronicled how 11 people were killed and 16 injured when the rig blew, and gushed oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Matthew Michael Carnahan has adapted the script for the film, which J.C. Chandor had originally signed to direct.

Update: Variety reports that Kurt Russell, hot off a supporting turn in Furious 7, is also circling a role.
Original: Summit’s Deepwater Horizon, about the 2010 Bp oil-rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico that took the lives of 11 people and spilled oil into the ocean for a horrific 87 days, got a whole lot less interesting when A Most Violent Year director J.C. Chandor exited and was replaced by Battleship helmer Peter Berg, but the talent that’s being assembled in front of the camera for the pic is undeniably exciting. Mark Wahlberg and Jane the Virgin breakout Gina Rodriguez are already attached, and now The Maze Runner star Dylan O’Brien is in talks for a major role.
O’Brien, who first hit it big with the teen crowd back in 2011 with the hit MTV series Teen Wolf (now gearing up for its fifth season), has been a star...
