The Grammys aren’t the Grammys without surprises, and this year definitely didn’t disappoint on that front. Here are five categories that shocked us all on Sunday night.
Song of the Year
Undoubtedly the biggest surprise at the Grammys was Bonnie Raitt taking home Song of the Year for “Just Like That.” Raitt is no stranger to a Grammy win, having racked up 13 competitive Grammys across her long career. However, while many expected her to lose this award to a more contemporary name — perhaps Adele or Harry Styles — Raitt probably monopolized the country and Americana vote, as well as being a likely rock-voter pick (she’s a past winner in that genre). With that in mind, and considering the older voters who likely love Raitt as well, her win isn’t inexplicable. And good for Raitt, who’s the first sole-lyricist winner of the award since Amy Winehouse (“Rehab...

The 2023 Grammys were full of chaotic wins and energetic performances. The winners this year ranged from expected sweepers to head-scratching underdogs. But we learn a little more about the Grammys and their tendencies every year, despite how weird they might feel sometimes. Here are the four biggest takeaways from this year’s show.
SEEGrammys outrage: Beyonce loses Album of the Year (again)
Number of nominations doesn’t equal strength
It’s common to assume that an artist’s strength might be reflected in the total number of nominations they got. However, many winners proved this wrong. For example, Robert Glasper’s “Black Radio III” got two nominations but was able to beat the six-time nominated “Good Morning Gorgeous” by Mary J. Blige for Best R&b Album. Similarly, “Til You Can’t” by Cody Johnson won Best Country Song despite being snubbed everywhere else.

Alongside the Country Music Association Awards, the Academy of Country Music Awards are the pinnacle of the country music scene, although they have a tendency to lean commercial and snub artists like Brandi Carlile and Willie Nelson who are currently less prominent on country radio. With this year’s nominations just around the corner and many artists potentially in the mix, let’s take a look at the best of the best in the world of country and whose names you should expect to see on nomination morning.
As with virtually every country music award show these days, if there’s someone you can bet will be nominated, it’s Luke Combs. The uber-popular singer-songwriter has been one of the biggest names in the genre, dropping some of the biggest hits of the past 10 years. Luke Combs is surprising fans with new music.
Less than a year after the release of the musician’s Grammy-nominated record Growin’ Up, he’s announcing his new album Gettin’ Old.
“This album is about the stage of life I’m in right now. One that I’m sure a lot of us are in, have been through, or will go through,” Combs explained. “It’s about coming of age, loving where life is now but at the same time missing how it used to be, continuing to fall for the one you love and loving them no matter what, living in the moment but still wondering how much time you have left, family, friends, being thankful, and leaving a legacy. Me and so many others have poured their hearts and souls into this record, and I hope you love it as much as we do.”

A range of artists including Maren Morris, Luke Combs, Willie Nelson, Zach Bryan and more are among this year’s country music Grammy nominees. While some omissions were definitely shocking, the nominations this year reflect some popular picks as well as lesser known songs by beloved artists. But who’s scooping up the awards come February?
SEEGrammy predictions: Can Tony champ ‘A Strange Loop’ hold off Michael Jackson in Musical Theater Album race? Best Country Solo Performance
The odds leader here is Willie Nelson for his cover of the standard “Live Forever.” Nelson has proved to be a Grammy favorite in recent years, winning this category in 2020 for “Ride Me Back Home.” As such, and in a lineup with four modern stars, it seems like the passion for Nelson and the respect for his legacy will carry him to a win here.
Next in line might be Zach Bryan’s “Something in the Orange.

Katy Perry and Thomas Rhett brought down the house at the 56th Annual CMA Awards. Making her CMA Awards debut, Perry teamed up with Thomas Rhett to perform their pop-country collaboration, “Where We Started”, at Wednesday night’s star-studded show.
Perry was dressed in a long denim dress and a signature black cowboy hat for the performance, while Thomas Rhett opted for a sleek leather jacket.
The moving melody of “Where We Started” had the crowd on their feet and in their feelings as they grooved along to the sweet song.
The pair’s performance comes just weeks after they released the music video for the hit song. The ethereal visual sees the pair singing to each other after an intense walk through sheets forces them to meet.
In April, Thomas Rhett dished to Et about the collaboration and how it came to be.
“I had no part in that.

The 2022 CMA Awards were a mostly predictable affair with a few pleasant little surprises — and we’re so grateful for it. Between the maelstrom known as Ye, the upending of the already chaotic Twitter, and the high stakes of the midterms, there’s enough wacky shit afoot without having to endure some stupid drama unfolding on country music’s biggest night. Sorry Garth, but thank God for answered prayers.

Luke Combs surprised us again by winning Entertainer of the Year at the 2022 Country Music Association Awards. You’d think after last year’s upset victory we would have seen it coming, but most of our users thought the award would go to either Morgan Wallen or perennial bridesmaid Carrie Underwood (no woman has won the prize since Taylor Swift in 2011). Combs surprised us one more time by also winning Album of the Year for “Growin’ Up” — his second victory in that category too. Check out the complete list of CMA Awards winners here.

According to the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users, Chris Stapleton is the front-runner to win both Single of the Year and Song of the Year for “You Should Probably Leave.” If we’re right it would be his second win in a row for Single of the Year and his third overall in the category. CMT’s Artists of the Year special honored relative upstarts like Cody Johnson, Carly Pearce, and Lainey Wilson earlier this week in Nashville, but it was Alan Jackson, the show’s Artist of a Lifetime recipient, who showed them all how it was done.
Jackson, a Country Music Hall of Fame member, closed out the evening with a spirited performance of his Southern party anthem “Chattahoochee.” Introduced by Chris Stapleton and punctuated by Jackson’s signature vocal tics and sprightly fiddle, the rendition had his fellow honorees on their feet.
