Christian Slater stars in a crime thriller series as the father of a mentally unwell young man who narrates his vigilante activities in a near-monotone voiceover.
Sounds familiar, right?
The Golden Globe-winning “Mr. Robot” star has signed on to Paramount+ with Showtime’s Dexter prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” in a very similar role to the one he played on Mr. Robot. He’ll play Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father and a Miami homicide detective, the streaming service announced Thursday. James Remar played Harry in the original series.
“Shadow and Bone” actor Patrick Gibson will play Dexter Morgan, who in the prequel is beginning his career as a serial killer who kills other serial killers. He was played by Michael C. Hall in the original series. And “Senior Year” actress Molly Brown will play a young version of Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan, who was played in the original by Jennifer Carpenter.

A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up for good… for the title character, anyway. Now Deadline reports that Patrick Gibson of Shadow and Bone has been cast to play a young Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin, with Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) joining him in the cast to play his dad, Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown (Senior Year) set to play Dexter’s younger sister, Debra Morgan.

Fans of Dexter will agree that Jennifer Carpenter’s Debra Morgan deserved better than her tragic fate in the series. Carpenter originally wanted Debra to die at the end of the series especially due to all the guilt from her and her brother’s actions. However, she was devastated by how the show actually executed her death in the last episode of the final season, Remembering the Monsters?.

Carpenter revealed that the scene made her realize that Dexter’s character was not the neat monster depicted in the show, but rather a very sick man in need of help. Michael C. Hall and Carpenter returned to their roles as the Morgan siblings in the standalone miniseries, Dexter: New Blood.

Regardless of genre, fans place an enormous amount of expectation on series finales. It's not easy to carry the responsibility of wrapping up any extraneous plot threads and character arcs in a satisfying way for longtime audiences. Even the most acclaimed shows, like "Seinfeld" and "The Sopranos," can have their entire successful run overshadowed by middling or divisive reception to their respective finales. This distinction carries over to horror TV shows, with plenty of notable series marring their celebrated legacies because of the last impressions left by divisive final episodes.
Horror shows often suffer from abrupt cancellations, denying audiences a satisfying amount of closure thanks to anticlimactic endings that don't live up to fan expectations. Even some of the most enduring and iconic horror shows have come to a close with lackluster finales. Here are the most maligned endings that ruined the legacies of TV horror classics by failing to stick the landing.

When the original Dexter concluded in 2013 with the titular character relocated to the Pacific Northwest, many viewers didn’t like the way the crime drama ended.
When the series returned eight years later, the final episode was equally as disappointing. If a certain showrunner had had his way, Dexter fans would have been treated to a far more satisfying conclusion, and Dexter: New Blood would not have happened at all.

“Dexter: New Blood” staged a reunion (of sorts) in the December 5 episode when Dexter’s new girlfriend, Iron Lake Chief of Police Angela Bishop (Julia Jones), met his old coworker, Miami Metro Captain Angel Batista (David Zayas). The last time viewers saw Batista was in the 2013 series finale, when Dexter (Michael C. Hall) drove his boat into a hurricane and made everyone believe he and his son Harrison had died. Zayas now reveals he had “mixed feelings” about that controversial ending, telling EW, “I felt it might’ve been a little underwhelming.”

A decade after Dexter Morgan sailed off into the sunset storm, he’s back and ready for some new blood. Showtime officially greenlit a “Dexter” revival in October 2020, with the premiere date taking place on November 7, 2021. Michael C. Hall is back, of course, as the adorably geeky Bay Harbor Butcher, aka the Miami, Fl blood splatter analyst/serial killer who focuses his bloodlust on murdering other serial killers. Original showrunner Clyde Phillips is also back as an executive producer of the new episodes. Here’s everything to know about “Dexter: New Blood” Season 9, including the cast and trailer.

If Dexter Morgan thought he had problems before, Sunday’s episode of Dexter: New Blood raised the stakes in some major ways.
Not only did things take a rough turn with teen son Harrison — the boy Od-ed at a party! — but someone close to Dex learned the stone-cold truth behind his “Jim Lindsay” alias. Plus, an old face from the series proper made a surprise return, and Kurt Caldwell’s true villainy was more or less confirmed. It was a meaty episode, so let’s dive right into this recap of “Runaway.”

Nothing tastes better than forbidden fruit.
Swearing on TV is now commonplace, but there's still something so satisfying about hearing taboo words said onscreen.
Unsurprisingly, the characters with the filthiest vocabularies usually become our favorites.
Beth Dutton - Yellowstone
No-nonsense. Tough as nails. Salty Af. Those are the kinds of words and phrases that come to mind when describing Beth Dutton.
The kinds of words she usually has for everyone else are usually far nastier because she is the master of verbal lashings.
If you're a Karen butting into her business or one of the many people trying to take over her family's ranch, watch out.
Her words don't just sting. They leave you an insecure, blubbering wreck.

The season eight finale of Dexter was disappointing to say the least. When the final episode of the Showtime series aired in September 2013, it was widely panned by critics and viewers. Vulture literally put in their headline that it was a "terrible end" to the drama, while Variety called it a "sloppy send off" to Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter). Even Hall admitted in a 2014 Reddit Ama that he felt "sadness" when reading the script for the episode. The writers have since been given the opportunity to redeem themselves with Dexter: New Blood, but the ending remains the same. Viewers have to live...

Ladies and gentlemen: Dexter Morgan is back for his encore.
It’s been eight years since Miami’s most under-the-radar serial killer dumped his sister’s body into the sea and disappeared into the night. If you’ll recall, Dexter boated through a hurricane, faked his own death and started a new life as a lumberjack in rural Oregon. But in Showtime’s new event series Dexter: New Blood (premiering Sunday at 9/8c), fans will finally get a chance to revisit the troubled-yet-beloved character, as a dangerous new tale unravels for Dexter and his dark passenger — one which hopefully sticks the landing this time.

We’re just about a month away from the November 7 premiere of “Dexter: New Blood” on Showtime, which will reunite fans with their favorite serial killer. Little is known about the plot of Season 9, except for the fact that Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is now living a secluded life in Iron Lake, New York after faking his death in the 2013 series finale. His sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) will also be a part of the revival, though it’s unclear in what capacity as she died (for real) at the hands of psychopath Oliver Saxon (Darri Ingolfsson) in the final season.
As fans continue to speculate about Carpenter’s mysterious role in “Dexter: New Blood,” let’s take a look at three newly released photos of the former Miami Metro lieutenant.

Dexter: New Blood is making way for some old blood as the newest trailer released by Showtime unveils the return of Jennifer Carpenter as his adoptive sister Debra Morgan. The revealing teaser sees Michael C. Hall‘s titular killer living under the alias of James Lindsay in the small fictional town of Iron Lake, New York. Set 10 years after Dexter went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, his life has changed a lot since taking on his new identity. (Credit: Seacia Pavao/Showtime) Embracing a romance with the town’s police chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones), Dexter is attempting to put his past behind him, but old habits die hard. As the trailer teases a slew of missing young people without any rhyme or reason for their disappearances, Dexter’s Dark Passenger begins to awaken. Whispering in his ear is the apparent ghost of Debra who tells Dexter, “You are a serial killer,...

Yesterday at the 2021 Television Critics Association summer press tour, journalists were given a lot of new information about Showtime’s upcoming Dexter revival, Dexter: New Blood. The continuation of one of Showtime’s most popular dramas is one of the most anticipated series of the year, but so far, few details have been revealed. That all changed when showrunner Clyde Phillips and stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter started to spill their guts, metaphorically speaking, about what fans and skeptics alike can expect from the forthcoming miniseries.
First and most importantly, Phillips and co. knew that in continuing the story, they would have to contend with the original series’ infamous, contentious ending, and that there was no way to erase the sight of Dexter Morgan: lumberjack.

When “Dexter” returns in November after eight years, it will feature very few of the elements from the Showtime drama’s original run. That will include a change to the show’s famous opening credits.
“We haven’t really completely closed the idea of what the new titles are, but they will not [incorporate] the cheekiness of what we had before, the jauntiness and irony of what we had before,” Clyde Phillips, who is returning as showrunner, said. Phillips led the show’s first four seasons, which are considered its golden years by many fans. “The viewer should expect that the title sequence, if there is even a sequence … will be very different from what they’ve seen before.”

The Dark Passenger is back. Dexter Morgan is returning to Showtime in Dexter: New Blood, and the new limited series appears to be aiming to erase the, let’s call it contentious, reputation of the Dexter series finale. You can check out the first look at Dexter: New Blood below.
Michael C. Hall is back as everyone’s favorite compulsive serial killer, this time taking up residence in snowy upstate New York under the alias Jim Lindsay (the name appears to be a nod to Dexter creator Jeff Lindsay). Dexter is once again hiding in plain sight, but he knows that “Every day I walk through this world, faking it. Knowing if someone knows who I am, that’s it.” Dex doesn’t appear to have changed his look much, meaning that in the world of Dexter, you can still count on the FBI to be pretty incompetent.

Welcome back Dexter Morgan (or should we say "Jim Lindsey"?).
Showtime released the first trailer during San Diego Comic Con on Sunday for its upcoming revival of "Dexter," which you can watch in the player above.
First thing's first... he's no longer chopping wood up in Oregon.
The revival picks up 10 years after the end of "Dexter," which aired its season finale in 2013. It finds Dexter now living in the small fictional town of Iron Lake in upstate New York. Clancy Brown stars as Kurt Caldwall, the unofficial mayor of the town and the revival's chief adversary. The revival will also feature returning (and deceased) "Dexter" characters such as Jennifer Carpenter's Debra Morgan and John Lithgow's Arthur Mitchell.

No details on how long the return is for, but John Lithgow, who is also set for a comeback, suggested to Deadline that they would be back in flashbacks.
“It was just wonderful to rejoin that gang — including Michael [C. Hall] and Jennifer Carpenter and [exec producer] Clyde Phillips.”
With Carpenter's Debra being dead by the end of the original series in 2013, it makes sense.
It's also possible that Dexter will be haunted by faces from his past, but we'll need to tune in when the series returns in the fall for more insight into it all.
For her part, Carpenter hinted at a return earlier this year when she shared a photo on Instagram, presumably from the set of the series.

Dexter is returning to Showtime later this year, but one name has been ominously left out of all the casting details to date.
Yvonne Strahovski played Hannah McKay on the original series, and the character was one of few to survive the show.
With fans questioning her participation in the revival, we have some bad news.
The Handmaid's Tale star has not heard anything about a potential return, and given that the series is well into production ahead of a fall debut, it's a surprise.
"And I'm so sorry to break it to everybody, but I haven't heard anything about the reboot. So it doesn't seem that Hannah McKay's making a return," she said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.
"I have a theory that perhaps, um, perhaps uh Harrison has already murdered her and is following in the footsteps of his father. I don't know. I don't know anything,...

Michael C. Hall signed on to play Dexter Morgan, his most infamous role, in a limited-series revival - and fans are rejoicing. The reboot will be on Showtime with a total of 10 episodes, and the show creators have already talked about making amends for the pitfalls of the series finale. But what we really want to know about the blood-splatter analyst by day and vigilante-style serial killer by night is this: when will the series be available? Happily, the series is set to release in fall of 2021. On April 29, Showtime hinted at the upcoming project with a mysterious teaser titled "Misunderstood," which features Hall's Dexter in a cabin in the woods and giving a sly smile to the camera. Oh yeah, and there's someone wrapped up in plastic in the background.
The original series ran from 2006 to 2013 for a total of eight seasons. While the showrunners remain elusive about the...

Ever since the Dexter revival was announced at Showtime, fans have pondered whether Jennifer Carpenter could return as Debra Morgan.
If you watch Dexter online, you know the character was killed off in one of the most controversial moments of the series, but there are many other ways the actress could be brought back, including having Debra haunt her brother.
The original series found Dexter struggling to come to terms with his actions, and the past came back to haunt him several times, so it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to have Debra back to haunt her brother.
What's more, fans are already convinced the actress is on the set filming the revival.
The actress shared a photo on Instagram from an unidentified set, alongside the following caption:
"Work is weird this year. Is there where I say something like-"
It was a cryptic caption, but could...

Jennifer Carpenter might be returning to TV!
Per TV Line, the beloved Dexter star has snagged a lead role in The Enemy Within, a pilot in the works at NBC.
Carpenter has been added to the cast as CIA operations deputy Erica Wolfe, who is an intelligent codebreaker who finds herself thrust into the world of counterintelligence.
Erica learned her deciphering craft from her father, so it sure sounds like we may have a family of CIA officers.

Carpenter previously appeared on Showtime's Dexter as Debra Morgan aka the sister of Michael C. Hall's murderous Dexter Morgan.
While Carpenter had already appeared in movies, Dexter served as her first significant TV role, and the show won critical acclaim as well strong ratings for the cable network.
Jennifer returned to TV in 2015 on the TV adaptation of Limitless. It lasted just one season before being canceled by CBS.
