Representative Ro Khanna, who represents California’s 17th congressional district, held a fundraiser with Paris Hilton and Joseph Gordon-Levitt on May 28, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.
Khanna, a Democrat, is currently seeking reelection for his seat, competing against 26-year-old Republican candidate Anita Chen in the upcoming November election.
He was introduced to Hilton a few years ago. The congressman tells THR he has had a “long friendship” with Hilton’s husband Carter Reum, the co-founder of the technology-focused venture capital firm M13. Khanna said Reum is “one of the most innovative technology leaders and investors in the country.”
A couple of years ago, Khanna met with Hilton regarding her long-standing push for more oversight of abusive youth centers. President Joe Biden condemned by the move by the International Criminal Court to seek arrest warrants against Israeli leaders, saying that there was “no equivalence” between that country’s actions and those of Hamas.
Earlier today, the Icc issued a legal report in which a panel of international law experts supported a prosecutor’s conclusion that there were “reasonable grounds” to believe that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and minister of defense Yoav Gallant committed war crimes, in addition to leaders of Hamas. Among the experts was Amal Clooney, a special adviser to the prosecutor and wife of actor George Clooney.
The Icc’s move to seek arrest warrants drew immediate pushback from Biden and leaders of both parties in Congress.
Speaking in the Rose Garden at a ceremony to recognize Jewish American Heritage Month, Biden said, “Let me be clear: We reject the Icc’s application for arrest warrants against Israeli leaders.

Marjorie Taylor Greene forced a vote to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday evening, a move her colleagues in Congress quickly voted to kill.
The House voted 359-43 to table the motion, with 193 Republicans siding with 163 Democrats in striking it down.
Greene has been teasing that she will force a vote to oust Johnson despite garnering virtually no support for the move, and former President Donald Trump reportedly telling her over the weekend to drop the stunt. She seemed ready to do so yesterday, but went ahead and forced the vote on Wednesday.

Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) have endorsed a bill that would ban non-citizens from voting in federal elections — a thing that is already illegal.
If you haven’t already guessed, the legislation is a brazen stunt intended to gin up public support for a former president campaigning on an anti-immigration platform and a house speaker on the brink of being ousted by extremists in his caucus.
No state allows non-citizens to vote in federal or state elections, but there are limited instances in which residents who have...

Congress is back from its Easter Break and things are already getting chaotic in the House of Representatives. Amid chatter that House Speaker Mike Johnson may soon face a motion to vacate from Marjorie Taylor Greene, one representative wants to remind Republicans in the lower chamber of their top priority: electing Donald Trump in November.

Update: Protesters interrupted President Joe Biden’s conversation with his predecessors, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, a signature feature of the blockbuster fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall.
The disruption isn’t all that surprising, given that many of Biden’s events have seen hecklers calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. This time, according to a pool report, one of the protesters was yelling obscenities about a nuclear war with Russia. Other protesters interrupted over the situation in Gaza.
When one protester interrupted, Obama snapped back, “You can’t just talk and not listen… That’s what the other side does.”
Stephen Colbert, moderating the conversation, first asked what was at stake in the election.
“I think our democracy is at stake, no joke,” Biden said, adding that if “we get by this election,’ then “we’re in a position where we can set the course for the next four or five,...

On Friday, controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) filed a motion to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson has served as House Speaker since October 2023, when he took over for Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted on October 3, when eight House Republicans and all Democrats supported a motion by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) to remove him.
It was not instantly clear how the House would act on Greene’s motion, which requires only a majority vote to remove its Speaker.
She did not file the motion as a special bill – which would have a vote forced within two legislative days – but instead, as a regular motion, which could be referred to a committee, where it would likely be disregarded.
Greene said in a speech on the House floor that the GOP majority was “a failure.”
After filing the motion, Greene spoke to reporters.
“We were promised regular order,” she stated. “That...

Marjorie Taylor Greene has filed a motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson, plunging Republicans into a state of uncertainty ahead of Friday night’s government funding deadline.

Update: The White House is blasting Fox News again, this time over comments that one of its opinion hosts, Mark Levin, made on his radio show.
Levin attacked CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer and other network personalities over the coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, claiming that the network was filled with “a lot of self-hating Jews.” He said that Blitzer’s parents “weren’t victims in one way or another in the Holocaust, and certainly his family comes out of that background, but you wouldn’t know it.” He also said that Blitzer “wants Israel to die.”
Blitzer’s parents, David and Cesia, survived the Auschwitz concentration camp, and the CNN anchor has covered his background in a network documentary.

Update: Rep. Mike Johnson (R-la) won the vote for speaker, ending three-weeks of Republican intra-party divisions and bitter argument that paralyzed the House.
Johnson won 220 votes while Hakeem Jeffries drew 209 votes. The manual roll call was a contrast to previous ones, as Republicans were unified in their support of the Louisiana Republican, who is little known on the national stage. Yet late on Tuesday, he managed to win a GOP closed-door vote to win the nomination, with members quickly predicting that they would finally coalesce around a speaker candidate.
“The challenge is great, but the time for action is now, and I will not let you down,” Johnson told members after taking the gavel. He said that the first bill he will bring to the floor will be a resolution in support of Israel. He also said that he planned to create a bipartisan commission on the national debt, and...

Update: Back to square one: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) is out as the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House.
Jordan fell short in roll call votes this week, and lost even more ground in a third ballot Friday.
“We need to come together and figure out who are speaker is going to be,” Jordan told reporters today.
Members are leaving for the weekend. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-Nc), who is serving as speaker pro tem, said there will be a candidate forum Monday night and conference elections to select a nominee on Tuesday morning.

Jordan won over some members who voted against him on Tuesday, but he lost others. It’s unclear whether he will move to a third vote. The House went into recess after the final tally was announced. Jordon told reporters afterward that he hasn’t decided if he will pursue a third vote.

Update, 1:51 p.m. Pt: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) won the GOP nomination to become the next House Speaker, but he still appeared to be a ways away from securing a majority.
Jordan got 124 votes in secret balloting this afternoon, to 81 for Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga), according to Punchbowl News and other outlets. Scott got into the race at the last minute earlier today.
Jordan needs 217 votes to win the speakership, although that threshold may change if lawmakers are absent. Jordan requested another secret ballot to see if members would back him in a public vote on the floor of the House, but the vote was 152-55, still far short.
“He’ll get there,” former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted last week, told CNN’s Manu Raju as he exited the GOP conference meeting.
McCarthy said that Jordan has to “just sit down and talk” to the holdouts.

Former President Donald Trump urged fellow Republicans in Congress to shut down the government in order to thwart the federal prosecutions against him.
Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, “Republicans in Congress can and must defund all aspects of Crooked Joe Biden’s weaponized Government.”

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy faces challenges within the Republican Party as they disagree on spending legislation, necessary to prevent a shutdown by October 1. A subset of conservatives, with many fervent supporters of Trump, have made the situation more complicated as they present obstacles to McCarthy’s proposed short-term funding strategy.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Friday that she planned to seek reelection to her San Francisco congressional seat.
“Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery. Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for All. That is why I am running for reelection — and respectfully ask for your vote,” she said in a post on her campaign’s Twitter/X page.
Pelosi, 83, who holds the title of speaker emeritus, stepped down from Democratic leadership earlier this year, as Republicans regained a slim majority in the House. But she has remained in her congressional seat despite speculation that she would retire. She was first elected in 1987, and had been Democratic leader since 2003. She served two stints as speaker, from 2007 to 2011, and from 2019 to 2023.

Cable news was again a study in contrasts on Thursday: Fox News carried a big portion of Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s testimony before a House committee, while CNN and MSNBC did not.
Kennedy’s candidacy — which seems to be embraced much more by the right than the left — also was highlighted with an interview later in the day on Fox News’ The Story with Martha MacCallum, while the political scion next week will sit for a town hall with Sean Hannity.
As a star witness before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, Kennedy’s appearance was contentious from the start. After Republicans and Democrats sparred over his testimony and he gave his opening statement, Fox News anchors then gave him high marks for his debut before the panel.
“He dispensed with his written statement. He gave it passionately from the heart.

Joe Biden’s first White House press secretary Jen Psaki began her new MSNBC program on Sunday by telling the audience, “It’s a hell of a week of launch a new show.”
She was talking about the big news of the weekend: Donald Trump’s potential arrest and his call on his supporters to protest, and that she led with it was to be expected, given MSNBC’s long focus on the alarm of the former president.
Still, with Inside with Jen Psaki, her challenge will be to make a mark and standout moments in a very crowded group of Sunday Beltway programs.

Last month, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson was granted exclusive access to the trove of more than 44,000 hours of Capitol surveillance footage by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. On Monday night Carlson released the first installment of his analysis of the tapes, telling viewers that the vast majority of the protestors who breached the Capitol on Jan. 6 were not insurrectionists but “orderly and meek” sightseers.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reportedly has given Tucker Carlson exclusive access to tens of thousands of hours of surveillance footage from the attack on the Capitol, a move that is drawing concerns among former members of the January 6th Committee that the video will be misused.
Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans who sat on the committee, said on CNN that a fear is that clips will be taken out of context or even manipulated to bolster false claims. He said that the concern is that producers will be “cutting little bits of this and saying something it isn’t.” Kinzinger suggested that McCarthy gave Carlson access as a way to win his favor, given the Fox News host’s influence on the right.
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-ms), who chaired the committee, said that “it’s hard to overstate the potential security risks if this material were to be used irresponsibly.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Mn) was booted off the House Foreign Affairs Committee, in a move that Democrats see as payback but Republicans say was over past controversial comments.
The House voted along party lines 218-211 to remove Omar from the committee.
Omar said that the move to oust her was an attack on Muslim Americans, citing the birther movement against Barack Obama, fueled in part by Donald Trump.
“I am a Muslim. I am an immigrant. And interestingly from Africa,” she said.
Omar’s district covers parts of the city of Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs.
She added, “I am an American. An American who was sent here by her constituents to represent them in Congress.”

Updated, with comment from Nancy Pelosi: Police video footage of the hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was released on Friday after a judge sided with media organizations in their request to gain access to the material.
The graphic footage shows police officers knocking on the front door of the Pelosi home. When the door is opened, Paul Pelosi is standing with the suspect, David DePape, and they are both holding onto a hammer. After an officer orders, “Drop the hammer!,” the suspect replied, “Nope.” Then, the video shows the suspect raising the hammer above his head and striking it at Pelosi. Police then rushed into the home, with one officer saying, “Oh, s—!”

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) stood behind a lectern in the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday morning and vowed she and her fellow Democrats “will always stand up to” Republicans’ efforts to “denigrate the integrity of the House.” At the moment, those efforts had amounted to a campaign to deny her a seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where she had served since she entered the House in 2019. Standing on either side of her were a pair of congressmen who had suffered a similar fate: Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.

Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) finally got the speakership early Saturday morning, but not before a weeklong slog that saw flared tempers, animated huddles and, in the penultimate drama before his moment of victory, a near-brawl.
Inside the chamber, many reporters in the press gallery had risen from their seats once McCarthy walked down the center aisle to converse with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl), the lone holdout he needed to obtain a majority, as McCarthy’s allies sat and crouched down to plead with the dissident. “On your knees,” one Democrat said loudly, as other lawmakers began to fix their gaze on what was unfolding.
Soon voices were raised. Gaetz pointed his finger at McCarthy, and McCarthy’s face was one of utter frustration. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-al) walked over and, in a moment that will forever live in the annals of House speaker votes, began to lunge at Gaetz before being restrained by Rep.

After days of public humiliation, and a chaotic 14th loss, Republican Kevin McCarthy has finally been elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on the 15th vote.
Just past Friday midnight, the Bakersfield, California, congressman at last secured the votes necessary to take hold of the gavel, following a grueling series of failed ballots that saw a gang of nearly 20 Republicans repeatedly lock arms against the longtime House GOP leader.
The impasse began to break on Friday morning. McCarthy held a call with Republicans, proclaiming he and the party were in a “good position.

Update: Kevin McCarthy, in his first speech after being elected speaker, said, “I hope that one thing is clear after this week: I never give up.”
“My father always told me: It’s not how you start. It’s how you finish. We have got to finish strong for the American people.”
But he signaled that Republicans would conduct an extensive series of inquiries and investigations. “Let me be clear: We will use the power of the purse and the power of the subpoena to get the job done.” He promised probes of the “origins of Covid and the weaponization of the FBI.”
After his own swearing in, at 1:35 Am Et on Saturday, McCarthy gave the oath to all of the members of the 118th Congress.
Previously: Kevin McCarthy won the speakership on the 15th House ballot, ending weeklong drama, GOP discord that at times played out on the House floor.

Update: The weeklong slog to launch a new Congress continued with a 13th ballot, as Kevin McCarthy picked up a vote yet still was short a majority.
Rep. Andy Harris (R-md) shifted his vote to McCarthy, giving the Republican leader 214 votes in the latest round. That’s still three short of what he needed to win the speakership.
Meanwhile, reports are emerging of the concessions that McCarthy made to win over the holdouts, including requiring just one member to file a motion to remove the speaker. Other concessions, according to Politico, would require a vote on a balanced budget amendment and there would guarantees for giving members of the Freedom Caucus seats on committees.

It’s a stunt, of course.
The 20 or so Republicans who have opposed Kevin McCarthy’s bid for the speakership — and thus prevented the House of Representatives from swearing in its members and beginning its business — have claimed they’re doing so in the name of draining the swamp. They’ve put forth no viable alternative, nor have they been swayed by any of the concessions McCarthy had made in an effort to woo them. They have, however, received plenty of press for their efforts.

Update: The House will adjourn until noon Et/9 a.m. Pt on Thursday, giving Kevin McCarthy more time to try to sway holdouts to support his bid for speaker — or work out some other sort of deal.
The scene on the House floor was raucous as Democrats objected to the motion to adjourn, forcing a vote on the issue. “We still have absolutely no idea how this will end,” CNN’s Jake Tapper declared Tuesday as the House of Representatives appeared to come up short for the third time to vote in a Speaker.
Suffering humiliation on humiliation, GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy saw 20 far-right members of his fractious caucus put their third-ballot support behind another top Republican. With business for the new 118th Congress frozen until a Speaker is selected, McCarthy had 202 votes to 212 for House Democrats caucus chair Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and 20 votes to Republican Rep.
