Elton John performed a five-song set, Billie Eilish made her first red carpet appearance with new boyfriend Jesse Rutherford, and director Park Chan-wook and artist Helen Pashgian were honored at Lacma’s 11th annual Art + Film Gala on Saturday night.
Park — considered a top contender for a best director Oscar nomination for his new film Decision to Leave, which is South Korea’s submission for best international feature — drew hearty laughs from the crowd when he accepted his honor. His speech played off what the accepted norms are for touting one’s accomplishments in Korea versus the United States.
“I initially wanted to being with the following words, ‘I do not know how to thank you for such an award that is beyond me.’ But I remembered advice from a friend that is familiar with both Korean and American culture. She told me...

This year the Los Angeles County Museum of Art honored Helen Pashgian and Park Chan-wook.
“I’m so pleased that we will be honoring Helen Pashgian, who has played an indelible role in the Southern California art community and has been a friend of the museum for so long,” Lama CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan said in a statement earlier this year. “We are also excited to recognize Park Chan-wook, whose unforgettable films never fail to show us the power of cinema. Honoring these two artists together continues the vitally important dialogue between art and film that this event supports.

At its 11th annual outing, stars and power players came out en masse for Lacma’s celebrated Art+Film Gala on Saturday, Nov. 5 in Los Angeles.
A bevy of celebrities wore Gucci on the red carpet at the museum, dressed by the long-time supporter of the evening, before heading into a dinner honoring South Korean director Park Chan-wook (whose critically acclaimed Decision to Leave is South Korea’s official entry in the 2023 Oscars after snagging a best director trophy for the auteur in Cannes) and artist Helen Pashgian, a pioneering member of California’s Light and Space art movement.
The benefit — chaired once again by actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Lacma board member Eva Chow with additional support from luxury automaker Audi — last year raised a record 5 million for the museum, funds which serve both its broader mission and support Lacma’s focus on spotlighting film.

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unanimously voted today to name Bill Kramer, current Director and President of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, as its new CEO, replacing Dawn Hudson after 11 years. Kramer will assume his new role on July 18. Hudson will remain with the Academy as an advisor during the transition period.
Kramer, whose background is in fine arts and museum curation, will lead the vast Academy organization, overseeing global membership, the Oscars, education and emerging talent initiatives, the Margaret Herrick Library and Academy Film Archive, and the Academy Museum.
After a long and arduous Museum launch, Kramer emerged as a White Knight, proving to be a decisive leader and efficient administrator. After prolonged construction as well as pandemic delays, Kramer successfully launched the Academy Museum in September 2021. The museum has proved a tourist attraction and sold more than 550,000 tickets in...

This year’s event raised $5 million to support Lacma’s film initiatives, as well as future exhibitions, acquisitions, and programming. Returning once again as presenting sponsor of the Art+Film Gala, Gucci expanded its longstanding and generous partnership with the museum by supporting Lacma’s presentation of The Obama Portraits Tour and the companion exhibition Black American Portraits. Audi provided additional support for the gala for the third year.

Mellody Hobson and David Geffen served as Co-Chairs for the Gala. The two took to the stage to introduce honorees Willow Bay and Bob Iger, and present them each with a Yes Award for their generous contributions over the years. The annual Lacma Art + Film gala should consider adding + Fashion and + Music to its name — all four industries were well-represented at the museum Saturday thanks not only to honorees Catherine Opie and Guillermo del Toro but also to presenter Gucci and a house band that featured Beck, Dave Grohl and St. Vincent. “I think it’s very timely and it’s important to honor Mexican artists, female artists,” said Eva Chow, who co-chaired the benefit with Leonardo DiCaprio. “I personally am very moved and touched by their work.”
But considering the proximity to election day, guests were talking about politics as well as pop culture during cocktails. “Because this event tends to be close to the elections, there have been years of ups and downs and emotions are always different depending on the mood of politics,” Lacma’s CEO Michael Govan told Variety. “Now, luckily, we have all points of...

When the Academy invited press for a hard-hat tour of its long-delayed, over-budget Museum of Motion Pictures, we heard Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti say nice things, as did new Academy president John Bailey, museum director Kerry Brougher, new chair of new board of trustees Ron Meyer, and museum committee chair Kathleen Kennedy. Yes, it’s great that, after 90 (!) years of planning, we’re finally getting a 300,000 square-foot Los Angeles movie museum at the corner of Fairfax and Wilshire to celebrate Hollywood past, present, and future.
However, that’s not what we came for. We wanted to know when it’s going to be finished and what it’s going to look like. (Notably, Academy CEO Dawn Hudson, who did much of the heavy lifting and controversy-dodging about museum funding and and construction, was on site but not part of the press conference. And Lacma director Michael Govan showed up late for the construction-site tour.

No one was angrier than Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Dawn Hudson after the Oscar-night envelope fiasco. You could see steam coming out of her ears at the Governor’s Ball. After the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and several less-than-popular ABC Oscar telecasts, the 2017 edition produced by Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd with host Jimmy Kimmel had — until the last possible moment — gone swimmingly.
But that momentary upswing was snatched away by two PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants who will never return to Hollywood & Highland. Amid internal debates about whether to fire the firm, the Board of Governors on March 28 voted for rule changes and to retain the venerable PwC, which has been counting votes and handing out envelopes for 83 years. And, as the Academy finally alerted their membership Monday night, Hudson will extend her six-year term as CEO, running the nonprofit staff of 350. She has renewed her lucrative contract worth...

Lacma’s Michael Govan presented the first of two tributes on Saturday night at the museum’s sixth annual Art + Film Gala, honoring his friend and mentor Robert Irwin. In doing so, Govan, Lacma’s CEO and Wallis Annenberg director, praised Irwin as a man whose “biography has convinced more young people to become artists than the Velvet Underground has created rockers.” Govan continued: “His whole life and career is a teaching moment.” And even though Irwin was nursing a broken back, his teaching skills were still in top shape as the 88-year-old slowly made his way to

Exclusive: Charlotte Mickie and her Toronto-based team have acquired international sales rights to The Ink Connection’s ‘fake fiction’ feature ahead of its European festival premiere in Switzerland.
Pierre Bismuth directed and Gregoire Gensollen produced Where Is Rocky II?, which will screen in Locarno’s Fuori Concorso section.
The film follows the efforts of Bismuth, who wrote the story to Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, in tracking down a fabled and undocumented work of art by Ed Ruscha.
When Bismuth heard that the renowned artist had created a rock out of resin, named it Rocky II and deposited it somewhere in California’s Mojave Desert in 1976, he hired a private investigator and two Hollywood screenwriters to find it and construct their own theories about the mystery.
The film debuted at Hot Docs in Toronto earlier this year and opened Art Basel’s film programme last month with an exclusive screening.
