After it was pulled at the last minute from Berlinale 2021, Chhatrapal Ninawe’s debut feature “Ghaath” (“Ambush”) will finally show at the festival in 2023.
The Marathi-language film, a slow-burn thriller set on the fringes of India’s jungles occupied by Maoist rebels and revolves around the tense interplay between guerrillas, civilians and the police, will have its world premiere at the Berlinale’s Panorama strand.
The project, then co-produced by billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Studios and independent producer Manish Mundra’s Drishyam Films, was selected for the work-in-progress lab at India’s Film Bazaar 2020 where it won the Lab Award.
“Ghaath” was selected as one of the Panorama titles in 2021, but was then pulled. In a social media post, which has since been deleted, Ninawe wrote:
“On Feb 4, 2021, Jio Studios sent a legal restraining order to Berlinale, effectively asking them to drop the film from the selection. We sent frantic emails.

The makers of cinematic gems like ‘Masaan’ and ‘Newton’ are out with another important work of storytelling, Siya. Produced by Drishyam Films, the film takes audiences through a tale of a small-town girl who despite all hurdles, decides to take down oppressive patriarchy and fight for justice.
Siya marks producer Manish Mundra’s directorial debut and the hard-hitting film starring Pooja Pandey and Vineet Kumar Singh is based out one of the northern states in India, much like most of Drishyam’s films, it speaks to a global audience.
While the teaser of Siya had created much intrigue with audiences, the trailer is gripping from start to finish as we can’t help but relate and empathize with the protagonist’s plight. Raw and as real as it gets, Siya is an uncompromising look at the harsh reality women around the world continue to face.

The Covid-19 lockdown phase is proving to be the most challenging time for our country. The greatest battle we face in this #WarAgainstCovid19 is to adequately arm our frontline medical staff. Effectively they are our soldiers in this fight and to protect them with Personal Protective Equipment (Ppe) is the need of the hour.
Understanding the critical shortage of Ppe kits for the medical staff across India, Bollywood actress Vidya Balan pledged to individually donate 1000 Ppe kits to the frontline healthcare staff. The actress also collaborated with India’s largest celebrity shout-out platform Tring (www.tring.co.in) to raise donations to provide additional 1000 Ppe kits, in association with Manish Mundra of Drishyam Films and photographer/producer Atul Kasbekar. For donations made through Tring, Vidya Balan is recognising the support of every donor by sending the donor a personal thank you video message, and a chance for 2-minute video call with her.

InterviewHyderabad Blues will be screened in Mumbai on July 17 in celebration of its 20 years, as part of Drishyam Films' The Masters.Ianspti "Seems like a lifetime, seems like only yesterday". Nagesh Kukunoor gets reminded of the opening lines of his Hyderabad Blues as he reminisces the 20 years that have gone by since the release of the film, which inadvertently jump-started the "independent movie movement" in India. Now, a prequel is on his mind. "It seems like yesterday, but I still can't believe I have survived after 20 years," Kukunoor told Ians over phone from Mumbai. A romantic comedy about an Nri Varun, who finds himself caught between two cultures when he returns home to Hyderabad, India after a span of 12 years, Hyderabad Blues worked with its unique vibe and relatable content. Kukunoor even came up with a sequel in 2004. "Hyderabad Blues 2 was technically the first sequel in the American context in India, wherein we had 2 in the title," Kukunoor recounted, adding that he made it as he had a relevant and "good enough topic to tackle". Does he plan to take the 'franchise' further? "I've thought about it many times, but the journey over my last few films has been extremely varied... Primarily, from a Lakshmi to a Dhanak, the shift is so radically drastic that I am not so sure if I have a proper story in me. "And I don't want to do a part of the trilogy just to do it. When I wrote Hyderabad Blues 2, initially I said I wouldn't do anything but seven years later, it was a different Varun who was staying in India, so I felt there was something to say. Now I'm not sure what the angle should be." He started writing a Hyderabad Blues 0 to see Varun's back story. "But I haven't completed the script and I don't know... Sometimes, I go through these moods where I am like 'Yeah man, it will be a great story to tell', because the 1980s are now clearly the past. Two generations have gone by. So, it feels like some fun story is there to tell. "But I am also potentially looking at it in a web series format. Let's see, I don't know if there's enough mileage, though." Hyderabad Blues will be screened in Mumbai on July 17 in celebration of its 20 years, as part of Drishyam Films' The Masters. Kukunoor has cemented his space in the film industry with projects like Rockford, Dor, Iqbal, Aashayein, Lakshmi and Dhanak. "The highs and lows have been as good or as bad as anyone else. It always happens in the business. But the challenge to try and retain that indie spirit, has been taxing, and that is the honest truth. "Everytime you go out into the market and you say there's no star cast, it is a huge challenge. But the origin of that is clearly from American indie cinema. That's what I was influenced by." Kukunoor studied engineering in the Us and worked for sometime before filmmaking caught his eye. "I never had a clear plan of making my own film. I came here, and there's one long story about how I went to the set of TV serial Veer Hanuman and when I saw what happened on the set, I knew I would not be able to fit into the industry. "So then, out of that hugely depressing moment and in that unhappy space, I thought maybe I should make my own film. That's how I set out to write Hyderabad Blues." He didn't have enough money to make one. So, he went back to the Us, worked for another year, saved up and returned to India again. The script was written in seven days, the shoot took about 17 days, and Kukunoor invested Rs 17 lakh, including marketing and publicity cost, into Hyderabad Blues. "Once the film was made, I never thought it will work in India, ever. So I packed up and left for the Us." But fate had another plan. The first Mami Film Festival in 1997 had a section called 'View From Abroad', and Kukunoor was one of the four filmmakers invited to be a part of it. That opened the doors for the movie, and got him a distributor. Even Doordarshan 3 decided to play the movie in three parts -- something which fetched him around Rs 75,000 back then. Kukunoor is sure Hyderabad Blues would never have been made had he been living in India. "I was never expecting it to work in India because when I had left India almost 10 years prior to Hyderabad Blues, Indian cinema was just stepping into its worst avatar. The 1990s. That was the memory I left with. So, that horrid cinema would not have remotely cared for a film in three languages, with no known star cast, 82 minutes long and every negative in the book. So I made the film thinking it will only work for the American audience." But it was this approach that eventually worked. Drishyam Films founder Manish Mundra said: "Nagesh started a new revolution with this self-funded film, the fruits of which we are enjoying even today. It will be great for the audience and for us to revisit this incredible journey with him." (Radhika Bhirani can be contacted at radhika.b@ians.in)...

Blind faith in the divine is always something people turn to when in need, yet sometimes that faith can be quite misplaced. Director Nagesh Kukunoor’s Dhanak has shed light on this practice where the two children Chotu and Pari encounter a religious phoney Shira Mata on their life-changing journey to meet their idol and get Chotu’s eyesight back.
Shira Mata, played by the veteran actress Vibha Chibber, seems to be a hilarious take-off on a popular Indian self-styled God-woman who was recently in the news for her loud appearance, connections to Bollywood stars and even bigger claims of preaching the ways of God. By the looks of it, Dhanak also treads on the same path as previous satirical comedies Oh My God! and Pk which tackled the sensitive and controversial topic of blatant misuse and commercialization of religion.

The film stars two young actors, Hetal Gada and Krrish Chhabria, essaying the roles of Pari and Chotu, who are complete show-stealers as they set out on a beautiful journey to meet their hero, Shah Rukh Khan.

As expected, Anu Menon’s highly-anticipated film, the Naseeruddin Shah-Kalki Koechlin starrer Waiting has struck the right chords with movie-lovers. Besides garnering critical acclaim, a tremendous word-of-mouth feedback — which is a true testament for any film — is additionally ensuring that the film continues to be a crowd-puller.
Waiting is the story of a retired professor whose wife is in coma for 8 months in a hospital. He meets a terrified young wife in the hospital whose husband has been in a sudden accident. The film traces their friendship where they learn to laugh and live from each other.
Right from Naseer-Kalki’s fun camaraderie and their sterling performances as the poles-apart strangers who become friends while waiting on their comatose spouses, to the beautifully-woven story filled with laughter, love and hope, Menon’s ‘Waiting’ is being hailed for its refreshing content and lilting music.

Besides the story and performances, upcoming release Masaan is also being talked about for its real locations and showcasing the heart of India. Masaan is set in the backdrop of Benaras city and it has been beautifully captured. And the credit for it goes to director Neeraj Ghaywan and National award winning cinematographer Avinash Arun.
Director Neeraj says, "This film had to be set in Benaras because it's starting from the point of death healing people. It's like how they come-of-age while dealing with death of someone really close. Benaras is a modern small town India, where a lot of the youth and people are struggling to find their way out from the shackles of socio-cultural or societal or financial crisis or individual crises...We became like the people of Benaras while shooting. And we just trusted anyone and everyone whom we met on our way for it."
