J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings has largely helped define the idea of epic fantasy fiction for generations of readers since its initial publication in 1954, and its impact is still keenly felt in almost every popular piece of fantasy-adjacent media we see today. And director Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning trilogy of films has, in its turn, basically come to define the idea of “Tolkien” in popular culture, turning even the most casual of viewers into hardcore lore experts on the lifestyle choices of hobbits and orcs. But Tolkien’s most famous work actually concludes his massive fantasy history of Middle-earth, the bulk of which takes place well before Bilbo Baggins ever steals a powerful piece of jewelry from creature named Gollum.

There’s a recent meme, created in the wake of so many Aaa developers releasing mediocre games under crunch conditions, expressing the need for shorter games with worse graphics made by people paid more to work less. That’s a sentiment worth rooting for, but Lord of the Rings: Gollum really presses up against the limits of the goodwill behind it.
Indeed, this is a game that looks like a remastered PS3 title, only one that plays like a PC game from the early 2000s. That’s not a problem in and of itself—the same mentality that’s made boomer shooters a flourishing genre can be applied successfully to the puzzle-platformer—but just like the character at its center, Gollum is in sad, broken shambles, held together only by the faint belief that the good things about it are enough to make its existence worthwhile.
And those good things are mostly narrative ones,...

Led Zeppelin had many songs with fantastical imagery. “Immigrant Song” is a perfect example of a song that blends visions of mythology into an epic rock song. One fantasy author who influenced members of Led Zeppelin was J. R. R. Tolkien, the legendary writer of The Lord of the Rings series. Here are three Led Zeppelin songs featuring Lord of the Rings references.
‘Ramble On’ mentions famous ‘Lord of the Rings’ characters and settings Robert Plant and Jimmy Page | Rob Verhorst/Redferns
“Ramble On” is a song from Led Zeppelin’s 1969 album Led Zeppelin II. Guitarist Jimmy Page and lead singer Robert Plant co-wrote the track. The track references Lord of the Rings with lines like “in the darkest depths of Mordor” and “Gollum and the evil one.” In an interview with Rolling Stone, Plant says he is embarrassed by how his love of Middle Earth made it into his...

This article contains spoilers for season 3, episode 5 of "The Mandalorian."
The question of what, exactly, "The Mandalorian" is about has eluded the first live-action "Star Wars" show. It is not about bringing Grogu "home," since the series already did that in season 2. It is not about discovering the fate of Mandalore, because that happened early on in season 3. So, the only logical conclusion is that the show is about Mandalorian culture as a whole, and the slow process of reclaiming the Mandalorians' lost homeland and its massive treasure of precious metal beskar. In a way, that makes it the "Star Wars" equivalent of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," which would make Grogu the show's Bilbo Baggins — in a matter of speaking.
It makes sense, then, that the show has shifted focus from Din Djarin to Bo-Katan, the most capable Mandalorian, the one who actually knows Mandalorian culture, had seen the planet Mandalore before its destruction,...

Exclusive: A musical stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, originally co-created in 2006 by Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical director Matthew Warchus, is headed to the English countryside.
The Shire of Middle-earth, the inland area inhabited by the hobbits and Bilbo Baggins, will be re-created at the Watermill Theatre to allow a cast of 20 actor-musicians to perform the musical in the open air.
The Watermill Theatre is located in Berkshire, a county adjacent to Oxfordshire, where Tolkien wrote his chronicle of the Hobbit universe’s Great War of the Ring. It will present a semi-immersive production of The Lord of the Rings that takes advantage of the venue’s picturesque setting on the banks of the River Lambourn.

"I think I'm quite ready for another adventure."
When an aged Bilbo Baggins spoke that wistful line at the end of Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," it was meant as a bittersweet and definitively final note to put a capper on one of the most formative blockbuster trilogies to ever grace the silver screen. Not even Jackson or co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens could've anticipated that they'd once again be roped back into Middle-earth for an entire trilogy of "The Hobbit" movies, let alone watch from the sidelines as Prime Video swooped in to acquire the television rights for a $500+ million series called "The Rings of Power." But in an IP-fixated blockbuster landscape where we're likely to get a never-ending stream of Marvel movies and "Star Wars" installments until the heat death of the universe, it was probably inevitable that the...

Rivendell is one of the most beautiful places in all of Middle-earth, and Lego will be bringing the Elven sanctuary to life with their largest Lord of the Rings set. Based on Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings franchise, the Lego set boasts a whopping 6, 167 pieces, which places it among the top ten biggest sets Lego has ever produced. Check out a handful of photos below!
“The building set is decorated with foliage that creates the feeling of being deep inside the Rivendell forest and includes magical details including an elven forge, Elrond’s cluttered study, the Shards of Narsil, plus paintings and statues from the history of Middle-earth,” reads the official description. “It also comes with 15 minifigures to bring favorite scenes to life. The minifigures have detachable legs, so you can seat them around the table to recreate the iconic Council of Elrond scene.”

Brace yourselves, Middle-earth hive: Lego has just unveiled one set to rule them all. After years of not doing much with the Lord Of The Rings license, 2023 is seeing a fresh deluge of building-brick sets based on Peter Jackson_ – to life.
The (potentially) bad news is, it costs over £400. The good news is, if you have that kind of money to spend on a giant toy set, it comes with over 6000 bricks, 15 minifigures, and all kinds of incredible details from one of the trilogy’s most spellbinding settings. In the set, you can build Elrond’s council, Frodo’s bedroom (should you also want to recreate the slow-mo Hobbit reunion from the end of Return Of The King), the elven tower, and the lush leafy exteriors of the elvish stronghold. It is a pretty astonishing construction, and by far the biggest Lego take on Lotr yet.

It’s been six years since Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman last graced our screens as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson, but fans are still holding out hope for season 5. It turns out that series co-creator Steven Moffat is also anxious to bring the series back, he’s just waiting on the two stars to return.
While speaking on BBC Today, Steven Moffat said that he would “start writing [Sherlock season 5] tomorrow” if Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman would return. “They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, please come back?,” Moffat said. Since the debut of Sherlock back in 2010, Cumberbatch and Freeman have indeed moved on to bigger projects. Both actors have joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Cumberbatch playing Doctor Strange and Freeman playing Everett K. Ross. The pair also appeared in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, with Freeman playing Bilbo Baggins and Cumberbatch playing Smaug and Sauron.

When the 2003 Christmas classic Love Actually entered the world, it was like a stuffed stocking, filled to the brim with some of Britain’s greatest actors.
From Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson to Alan Rickman, it attracted some of the best performers of the era.
The film also launched the careers of Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Olivia Olson, who were children when they starred in the romcom.
It’s been almost 20 years since Richard Curtis’s film was released, and they’ve all been very busy since then.
Some of the stars of the movie have gone on to work with Curtis again, while others have had huge franchise roles or become synonymous with certain characters, like Martin Freeman’s Dr John Watson in Sherlock.

“Deep Dive” is a in-depth podcast and video essay series with the stars and creative team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this winter edition, the IndieWire Crafts team partnered with Prime Video to take a closer look at the first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” with showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, stars Morfydd Clark, Sophia Nomvete, and Charlie Vickers, and eight key members of the creative team behind the series.
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” truly embraces both halves of its “based on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien” credit. Lots of people know “The Lord of the Rings”: “The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers,” and “The Return of the King” have sold millions of copies and were later adapted by Peter Jackson into a box-office-conquering, Oscar-hoarding series of feature films.

In 1937, English author J.R.R. Tolkien penned a children’s book called “The Hobbit,” or “There and Back Again,” which ignited what would become one of the most popular franchises of all time across books, film and television. That means there’s a whole lot to watch, so we’ve put together a handy guide for anyone wondering how to watch all the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” movies in chronological or release date order.
Tolkien followed the success of “The Hobbit,” which features a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins and his adventures in the Third Age of the fictional, mystical world of Middle Earth, with a sequel series called “The Lord of the Rings.” Set 60 years after “The Hobbit,” “The Lord of the Rings” follows an ensemble of different characters traveling to defeat the evil One Ring. Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy still has a lot of aging to do before it catches up to Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) — recall that the hobbit is celebrating his 110th birthday with the long-expected party that makes up the early beats of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” But as each entry in the series reaches its 20th anniversary — “Fellowship” last year, “The Two Towers” this year, and “The Return of the King” in 2023 — it’s worth reflecting on more than the shadow of the past of the films themselves. Or more than their theatrical cuts, at least.
A month prior to the premiere of “The Two Towers,” New Line Home Video unveiled the “extended edition” of “Fellowship of the Ring,” with 30 minutes of additional footage spread across six new and 20 expanded sequences. “When in doubt, Elanor Brandyfoot, always follow your nose,” The Stranger tells the young Harfoot in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s Season 1 finale.
The line is almost identical to what Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen) tells Pippin in Peter Jackson’s Fellowship of the Ring, leaving many wondering if The Stranger — who was revealed to be an Istari — is the famed Grey Wizard. Adding to speculation is his friendship with Nori and the other Harfoots, which feels reminiscent of Gandalf’s relationships with both Bilbo Baggins and Bilbo’s nephew Frodo.

It's pretty serendipitous that "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" (which del Toro co-directed with experienced stop-motion artist Mark Gustafson) is arriving so shortly after Disney's lifeless live-action remake. It's easy to forget just how ubiquitous the Disney formula — taking classic children's stories and smoothing out the ugly parts, sad endings, and dark corners — has become until you're confronted with an adaptation that refuses to talk down to children or draw a sunny curtain over the terrors of the world.
Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" ends with its young heroine being rejected by her prince and casting herself into the ocean, where her mortal body dissolves into sea foam and she reemerges as a benevolent spirit. Andersen's "The Snow Queen" opens with the devil himself creating a corrupted mirror that shatters; the splinters are blown all around the world and get stuck in people's eyes so that everything they see is twisted into ugliness.

This article contains spoilers for episode 4 of The Rings of Power and J.R.R. Tolkien’s works.
In episode 4 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, we finally learn what Durin IV (Owain Arthur) and Disa (Sophia Nomvete) have discovered in the Khazad-dûm mines – the precious metal mithril. In The Lord of the Rings universe, mithril becomes highly sought after in Middle-earth both for its beauty and its durability – it shines like silver, is stronger than steel, it’s as malleable as copper, and doesn’t tarnish. While this discovery may seem like a win for Durin IV and the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm in the Second Age, the mining of mithril will eventually lead to the destruction and downfall of the Dwarven kingdom.
Because mithril can only be found in the Dwarven mines of Moria, the haste with which the Dwarves mine mithril throughout the Second Age leads...

This Lord of the Rings article contains spoilers for The Rings of Power.
As J.R.R. Tolkien‘s books and the films of Peter Jackson already showed, not all of the races of Middle-earth are preoccupied with dark lords, wars, or magical rings. During the Third Age of The Lord of the Rings timeline, while the Elves, Men, Orcs, Dwarves, and Wizards fight over what to do about Mordor and the One Ring, the little jolly (and lazy) halflings known as Hobbits are mostly back in the Shire, chowing down on massive wheels of cheese, drinking ale, and smoking the finest weed they can get their hands on.
Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, as it was four Hobbits — Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry — along with a fellowship of heroes from the races of Man, Elf, and Dwarf, who embarked on the fateful quest to bring an end to...

Finding noble heroes and leaders in unlikely places is a theme central of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. It's the reason his tale opens with a visit to the Shire and an introduction to a curious group of Middle-earth residents: Hobbits. As Bilbo Baggins puts it in "The Fellowship of the Ring," these were a race that was "neither renowned as great warriors, nor counted amongst the very wise," making them an unassuming choice of protagonists for Tolkien's tale.
But all four Hobbits that set out from the Shire at the beginning of the trilogy break those stereotypes one way or another. Arguably the most important of any that appear in the films are Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) and Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin). It's the bond between these two friends, one an orphan and the other his gardener, that ultimately leads to Sauron's downfall with...

With "The Hobbit" first published nearly a century ago, J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth is one of fantasy's most enduring worlds. Inspired by the rise of fascism and the horrors of war, Tolkien's fantasy culminates in a battle for good and evil over the Ring of Power, an ancient tool of evil made by Lord Sauron to control and wield power over Middle Earth. When Bilbo Baggins regrettably passes the Ring onto his nephew Frodo, the young hobbit is sent on a quest to destroy the Ring to save Middle Earth.
Thankfully, he's not alone, as a disparate group of heroes comes together to form the Fellowship of the Ring.
