Some of the songs from the original are so irrevocably poppy that hearing Adams warble them was disconcerting, while others, like “Bad Blood," were completely stripped of any teeth they had to begin with. But on “Style," Adams gives listeners a heavy reverb treatment that actually takes us to 1989 as promised. It’s scream-y, desperate, and wonderful. Ryan, can you do “All Too Well” next? —Eric King (@erickingdavid) Alex G, "Kicker" This week, the prolific Philly-based songwriter Alex G conjures the ghost...

Their vocals and sumptuous interludes give the band's stripped-down piano arrangements a robust grandeur. A perfect addition to Folds's recent foray into classical music. —Eric King (@erickingdavid) Kehlani and Charlie Puth, "Hotline Bling"Drake quietly dominated the summer. He's on such a level of cultural ubiquity that he can turn a diss track into a charting hit ("Back to Back") and sneak one-offs onto his Beats 1 radio...

I thought this would be an easier review, because I thought I had reviewed it before, back when I saw the screener around the time it was being unleashed on VOD. Turns out, my good friend and Tld badass Eric King(Brobocop) reviewed it for me, so I actually have to do a little bit of work. That’s okay, though, because Bad Milo was one of the gems of 2013, in my humble opinion. Bad Milo is one of those movies, that when you read the description, you think that no way will this movie be any semblance of good. You would think that, but you’d be wrong. I had an idea, what to expect, from a movie that was described to me as a story about an irritable man with a demon living in his intestines, that would come out through his anus when stress levels reach a maximum,...

Sunday at Tadff is always a tough day. Generally speaking, from a reporting perspective, it means that you’ve been out until all hours of the morning for the last three nights, probably imbibed a bit more than necessary, lost a lot of sleep, and then spent all of your free time writing reviews, editing interviews, etc. As such, it is almost always the one day that I get to the theater either late, or right before the first movie of the afternoon.
This year, that first movie was the World Premiere of Silent Retreat, a story about a teenager who gets sent to a rehabilitation camp in the woods where escape attempts lead to encounters with something that lurks beyond the trees. Due to some trouble finding seating in the packed auditorium, I missed the theatrical showing, but I am hoping to be able to get a chance to...

As is customary at Tadff, Saturday was Zombie Appreciation Night, which meant that the day’s programming consisted of two zombie-related films along with the International shorts program. Though I think zombies are by and large a bit played out, I still look forward to the night every year at the festival because they tend to choose interesting films that I might never have gotten to see in the theater otherwise.
The evening opened with a short called Montreal Zombie, which should give you a great idea of what it’s about. Essentially, three French-Canadian guys are holed up in an apartment, and one of them is filming their day-to-day interactions with what appears to be an old VHS camcorder. The film was actually very funny, with lots of outlandish humor, and the filmmakers did a lot with the very little they had to work with. This may be my...

It’s just about that time of year again. No, not Halloween, but that too. It’s almost time for Toronto After Dark 2013. Tld’s resident podcast specialist, Jeff Konopka, tries to attend the festival every year, and last year, he pulled off some major coverage of the festival, including two “Pub After Dark” episodes of the podcast, where he recorded an episode of the podcast, on location, and got plenty of amazing interviews as a result. Jeff is attending again this year, so you can look forward to more of that, but those of us unable to attend the festival wanted to pitch in a little bit, and do some Tad coverage ourselves, at least for the things that we can do/see stateside, without being in Toronto. Several of the films playing this year are currently on VOD in the states, so you may see a review or...

Who doesn’t love a good Australian horror movie? If you’re unfamiliar with the term “Ozploitation”, you should really check out the amazing documentary, “Not Quite Hollywood”. If you’ve managed to miss all of these golden genre movies from the land down under, it will be quite the eyeopening experience. Just remember to grab a pen and paper, because there’s going to be at least twenty films you’ll want to seek out. A while back, we did an entire series titled The Ozpoitation Files, where some of us, as well as several guest contributors, outlined some of the greater Aussie genre fare. You can find that here, if you are interested. So, suffice it to say, any time a new horror film comes out of that region, it automatically has my attention. I had heard of 100 Bloody Acres before the product review requests started coming in,...

Bad Milo is a new film, from Magnet, that will be screening on the last day of Fantasia, August 7th. Recently, we were sent a screener to view, and you can find Eric King’s review here. I was able to watch it as well, and I’ve gotta say that it was one of the funnest “smaller” films I’ve seen in 2013. This is not only a horror/comedy that manages to get the formula right, but it is also one of the greatest homages I’ve ever seen, to the little rubber monster movies of the eighties and early nineties. Bad Milo will be released on VOD on the 29th of August from Magnet Releasing. Check out the Red Band trailer below, and make sure you catch the film at your first convenience.
