Serena Williams found herself in the midst of drama and controversy within the Formula One arena after her recent remark about Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was responding to comments made by Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. Ahead of last weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Mercedes team principal spoke candidly to Pa news agency when evaluating Lewis Hamilton's chances of winning a record-breaking eighth championship.
Wolff asserted that he was fuelled by "personal anger" to help the British driver achieve this historic milestone that eluded him back in 2021 in quite dubious circumstances. Hamilton has won seven world championships on the race track (level with Michael Schumacher for the most titles).
"We are living in a hamster wheel where time passes so quickly that it doesn’t feel like it has been two years. You can see how quickly the pecking order changes. But, we have to look forward,...

Josef Newgarden, a two-time IndyCar champion and star of the new “100 Days to Indy” series on the CW network, shook a little spice into the rivalry between his North American open-wheel racing series and Formula One – suggesting that “Drive to Survive” on Netflix has been “fabricating” storylines.
Newgarden made his comments from onstage Wednesday night during a Q&a session following the premiere of “100 Days to Indy,” a quick-turnaround documentary-style show being co-produced by CW and Vice. He said IndyCar, which holds its third event of the 2023 season this weekend in Long Beach, has enough close racing to keep things interesting organically.
“The competition is so good that there’s no need to fabricate anything,” Newgarden said, “unlike … some motorsports products.”
That drew a knowing laugh from the Long Beach crowd and fellow IndyCar drivers onstage including Pato O’Ward, Marcus Ericsson, Scott McLaughlin and “Drive to Survive” director...

Bahrain, March 6 (Ians) Red Bull’s Max Verstappen started the 2023 Formula 1 season as he had finished 2022, scoring an ominously easy win in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
Having dominated the 2022 season, Red Bull’s pre-season testing form had suggested that they would remain the team to beat in 2023, and that assertion was borne out when Verstappen and Sergio Perez locked out the front row in Saturday’s qualifying session, reports Xinhua news agency.
Leading the field away from pole position, Verstappen was never threatened as he eased to his first ever victory at the Bahrain International Circuit.
Behind Verstappen, Perez made it a Red Bull 1-2. The Mexican had lost second place to Charles Leclerc at the start, but took the position back by passing the Ferrari on Lap 26.
The final podium place went to a resurgent Fernando Alonso on his first outing for Aston Martin, after surviving contact on Lap 1 from teammate Lance Stroll.

Eyes burning and blood boiling, a rattled Toto Wolff inconceivably loses his cool. Sat in a team principals meeting in Montreal, the German hits the ceiling, in a similar vein to his porpoising Mercedes car that is the only topic of conversation. “If a car ends up in the wall because it’s too stiff or it’s bottoming out…” he barks. “You’re in the s*** and I’m going to come after you.”
Evoking memories of 2021’s title duel, Christian Horner hits back – and hard. “You’ve got a problem, change your f****** car,” the Red Bull boss retorts. Cue bedlam from all angles. It is, unquestionably, absorbing television.
It doesn’t take long for Formula 1: Drive to Survive, edition five, to whet the appetite. Halfway through episode two, in fact. Call it what you like: off the rails. Uncut. Box-office. Wolff’s incredible rant is the content every producer craves.

No one disputes the direct line between the exploding popularity of Formula 1 in the United States and the hit series “Drive to Survive,” soon to launch its fifth season on Netflix. So it was only a matter of time before IndyCar, America’s premier open-wheel racing series, would try something similar.
But getting F1’s American counterparts to open the throttle could be tricky – at least at first.
A production crew from Vice Media this week began crawling all over Thermal, California, where the Ntt IndyCar Series’ nearly 30 regular drivers started testing their machines ahead of next month’s 2023 season debut. The TV series, “100 Days to Indy,” is expected to air this year on the CW.
IndyCar brass has instructed teams to allow the Vice crews unfettered access, forbidding them from dismissing cameras for any reason. But it sounds like some IndyCar teams – with widely varying degrees of media...

The Fia’s international sporting code has been updated to require that all Formula 1 drivers receive written permission to express explicit political, religious, or personal statements. Beginning in 2023, any non-neutral stances across the three sectors will be considered a violation of the organization’s principle of neutrality without a clear sign-off.
“The general making and display of political, religious and personal statements or comments notably in violation of the general principle of neutrality promoted by the Fia under its Statutes, unless previously approved in writing by the Fia for International Competitions,...

Monza (Italy), Sep 13 (Ians) Team Principal Toto Wolff is hopeful that Mercedes can push Ferrari for the runner-up spot in the 2022 constructors’ standings after “maximizing” their Italian Grand Prix points haul “on a track that doesn’t suit the team”.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell started the Monza weekend within reach of the pace-setting Ferrari and Red Bull cars but dropped back as practice wore on and ended qualifying almost one-and-a-half seconds off pole position.
On race day, however, Russell capitalised on a host of grid penalties to convert a front-row start into another podium finish, while Hamilton fought his way through the field from P19 to claim fifth — adding important points to Mercedes tally.
“I think you (can) see that we are on a track that doesn’t suit us, (and) we are clearly third on the road, so (positions) three and five is probably the maximum (result),” Wolff told Sky Sports F1.

Zandvoort (the Netherlands), Sep 5 (Ians) Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has defended his team’s decision to keep Lewis Hamilton on used medium tyres at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix, which saw the seven-time champion drop from the lead to P4 as George Russell finished second.
The Silver Arrows’ pace on hard tyres was enough for them to cut into Max Verstappen’s lead midway through the race, and it seemed that a one-stop strategy from Mercedes could have genuinely threatened the Dutchman’s bid for victory.
However, when the Vsc emerged late on in the race – followed by a Safety Car for Valtteri Bottas’s retirement – Mercedes kept Hamilton out in the lead, prioritising track position, while Verstappen chose to switch to softs for the restart.
Hamilton ended up being passed not only by Verstappen, but by soft-shod team mate Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who...

Berlin, Aug 24 (Ians) Formula One teams believe there will be no major effects from a new technical directive (Td) brought in at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix to limit the amount of porpoising.
Mercedes have been among the teams to be worst hit by the phenomenon, with cars bouncing up and down on straights because of new aerodynamic rules this year.
The governing Fia has drafted the new rules in order to better protect drivers’ health as F1 returns from a mid-season break.
Ferrari’s racing director Laurent Mekies told the Formula One website: “As far as we are concerned it’s an issue that pretty much has disappeared. If you have the issue you raise your car, if you don’t have it you could bring the car lower.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, whose defending champion Max Verstappen leads the championship, believes the bigger factor could be next season.

Monte Carlo, May 19 (Ians) Its been almost two years since the last Monaco Grand Prix took place on the streets of Monte Carlo. The traditional Formula One race had to be removed from the 2020 calendar due to Covid-19 but makes its comeback on Sunday.
Not much has changed since the 2019 race, with Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen leading the pack. But this season has seen a different take of the duel between Hamilton and Verstappen, who currently seem to be the strongest title contenders.
All four races up to now have had at least one moment when the two drivers came wheel-to-wheel with seven-time world champion Hamilton leading the fight with three wins against Verstappen's solo triumph at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, Dpa reports.

Sakhir (Bahrain), March 29 (Ians) The Formula One season promises to be an exciting one after world champion Lewis Hamilton barely held off Max Verstappen on Sunday in Bahrain.
It will take some time to judge whether Verstappen's Red Bull team are really capable of dethroning Hamilton's Mercedes outfit after seven years at the top but they seem to have a car that can finally give Mercedes a real fight until the end.
"There is a long way to go, 22 (races) ... Holy crap! I will be grey by the end of this," Hamilton said, Dpa news reports. Verstappen meanwhile considered: "we'll have 22 more opportunities to do better.
"We have to look at the positives, we are taking the fight to Mercedes and I think that's great, it's good to start the season this way," the Dutchman added.
