Mel Brooks is one of the best comedic voices in American cinema history, a man who has made some of the most influential comedies ever made. His work has tackled multiple genres, from sci-fi to Westerns to horror, and they have lampooned, parodied, and commented on a variety of topics, always with biting social commentary.
"History Of The World, Part I," although not usually regarded as his finest work, is nevertheless one of the purest Mel Brooks experiences you can have. This is a movie that fires on all cylinders and delivers an anthology of jokes and commentary on the whole history of humanity, from the stone age and the Roman times all the way to the French revolution. This is a movie I watched way too young, knowing only that it was a comedy about history and I loved comedy and history — only to then be opened to a...

Talk about calling your shot. Who else but comedy legend Mel Brooks would release a comedy in 1981 ironically titled "History of the World Part 1", complete with a fake trailer for the sequel, despite no initial plans of actually making a Part 2? Well, maybe some things aren't quite as set in stone as they may appear, after all. Decades after the fact, Brooks is still trucking along at the ripe young age of 96(!) and, what's more, he's finally spearheading a followup series to his beloved comedy classic that's set to debut on Hulu in the coming year.
Titled (what else?) "History of the World Part 2," the series will unfold as part of "a four night event" filled with all the humor, episodic skits, and mind-bogglingly stacked cast of A-list talent that you'd expect from a Mel Brooks production. The man isn't getting any younger, so why not pull out all the...

When the seminal cinematic comedy "History of the World, Part I" was released in 1981, Mel Brooks and company teased that Part II was on the way. However, the cheeky teaser was only meant to be a bit rather than an earnest promise. Despite carrying "Part I" as part of the title, there was never an actual plan in place to do another installment of the episodic parody film that delivered Brooks' version of world history from the Stone Age to the French Revolution. The title was actually a reference to "The History of the World, Volume 1" by Sir Walter Raleigh, who was a prisoner in the Tower of London that was beheaded before he could write the other four intended volumes.
Then again, that's also how the gag about a "Spaceballs" sequel started out in 1987. Decades later, the prolific writer took his talents to G4 in 2008 for "Spaceballs: The Animated Series.

This A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
As honeymoon destinations go, Elizabethan London isn’t quite the Maldives but for historian Dr Diana Bishop, it may as well be. To a history nut like her, the prospect of experiencing life in the 16th century must have been quite something. To meet Sir Walter Raleigh, see St Paul’s before Christopher Wren got his hands on it, wear gowns so voluminous that a small family and several pets could be comfortably housed beneath her skirts… she’d be living the dream.
Or she would have been if when she arrived, everybody in Elizabethan London including her vampire lover wasn’t acting like a prize knob. Diana must have imagined spending her time-walk eating marchpane, playing at lawn bowls and getting fingered on the royal barge. Not for a second did she think that her modern,...

“Star Wars” producer Gary Kurtz and British crime film director Greg Hall are teaming on an untitled feature film about iconic British poet and playwright Christopher Marlowe.
Kurtz and Hall announced the project on Wednesday, the 425th anniversary of the death of Marlowe at the age of 29. Marlowe is best remembered as William Shakespeare’s friend and rival, but the film will explore the aftermath of his role as a spy for the British crown while a student at Cambridge University.
Marlowe wrote “The Jew of Malta,” “Edward the Second” and “Doctor Faustus.” His death has long been assumed to have been as a result of a fight between friends over a bar bill. But, according to the filmmakers, he was assassinated as a matter of state policy because of his involvement in secret affairs.
The script, by Francis Hamit, details Marlowe’s career as a spy as part of the early English Secret Service,...
