World Day for Laboratory Animals, Monday April 24, commemorates the suffering of animals in laboratories worldwide, where over 100 million animals are tortured and die in research and testing.
Animal Defenders International (Adi) and celebrity supporters Mena Suvari, Alexandra Paul, Dame Joanna Lumley, and Tonya Kay are calling for positive change to end the suffering and benefit human health through the adoption of advanced non-animal methods.
Latest figures show that in the US:
0.8 million animals were used in laboratories in 2021, up 6% from 2020. This excludes tens of millions of mice and rats, who are estimated to account for 95% of all experiments. Procedures were carried out on 44,978 dogs. 71,921 primates were used, including long-tailed macaques who are now endangered in the wild principally due to their use in research. The most used species recorded were guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters. 75,606 animals were used in “Category E” procedures, which involve pain. This means animals subjected to...

The US House of Representatives has passed (278-134) a bill to ban private possession, public contact and increase restrictions on the breeding, trade, and exploitation of big cats.
The Big Cat Public Safety Act (HR263/ S1210), sponsored by Representative Mike Quigley and Senator Richard Blumenthal, now heads to the Senate floor.
Animal Defenders International (Adi) is joined by a variety of celebrities calling on the public to support the bill, which focuses on the private ownership, trade, and breeding of certain species – it is directly aimed at backyard breeders, roadside zoos, cub petting, & photo operations – the ‘Joe Exotics’ in the US.
Captive big cats are frequently declawed, though the practice is prohibited by the Usda since 2005, and often have smashed teeth. Exhibitors rely upon physical abuse, severe confinement, and drugs to put these dangerous species in direct contact with the public, endangering both the animal and humans. This perpetuates the...

A ban on the use of wild animals in travelling circuses finally came into force in England on Monday, 20 January 2020.
The legislation finally passed last year after over a decade of promises from successive UK governments, as other countries overtook the UK with similar bans. The long-awaited ban was welcomed by Animal Defenders International (Adi), following 25 years of studies, investigations and campaigns exposing the suffering of animals in circuses.
Jan Creamer, President of Animal Defenders International, said: “At long last we can draw a line under this archaic industry, synonymous with suffering and abuse. Some of the worst cruelty Animal Defenders International has exposed has taken place in circuses in England – never again.”
The news has been welcomed by a number of well-known supporters who have supported Adi’s Stop Circus Suffering campaign for a number of years:

Ahead of Fur Free Friday, an international day of action held on November 29, celebrities are speaking out in support of the campaign by Animal Defenders International (Adi) to stop the suffering of animals bred, trapped, and killed for their fur.
Etsy is one of the few major companies without a fur free policy in place, and Adi is urging the online marketplace to step away from the cruel fur trade and banish real fur sales from its global site.
Ricky Gervais: “When you buy real fur, you’re basically saying ’I’m okay with defenseless animals being trapped in the wild or kept in hideous conditions and then killed.’ But it’s not okay. It’s disgusting and unnecessary. Please don’t buy real fur.”
Joaquin Phoenix: “From the moment they are born until their deaths, animals farmed for their fur suffer. There’s no excuse for this cruelty,...

Ahead of World Elephant Day (August 12) and an upcoming meeting on international wildlife trade in Geneva, Switzerland, Ricky Gervais has teamed up with Animal Defenders International (Adi) to call for elephant protections to be strengthened, not weakened.
Award-winning comedian and actor Ricky Gervais said: “I cannot imagine what Africa would be like without its elephants, but this could become a reality if those with the power to help fail to act. If you’re as sickened by scenes of these incredible animals being torn from their families or hacked to pieces then speak out, before it’s too late.”
African elephant populations have fallen by more than 50% in the last 40 years, with poaching, habitat loss, and human conflict decimating numbers. Fewer than 350,000 savannah elephants and 100,000 forest elephants remain.
Two proposals to be considered at the Cites (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) meeting, which...

This World Lion Day (August 10), Joaquin Phoenix is joining Animal Defenders International (Adi) in calling on governments to act by voting to protect lions at the upcoming Cites (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix said: “Literally fading away before our eyes, African lions are today perilously low in number. To save this iconic species, the macabre trade in their body parts and grotesque killing for fun have to stop. Governments must not stand by while the slaughter continues – they must act now.”
A draft resolution proposed by Nigeria and Togo for the Geneva meeting, seeks recognition that the legal trade in captive lions provides a cover for and incentivizes the illegal trade, resulting in the poaching of wild and captive individuals; regulation and monitoring of breeding operations; and greater cooperation between law enforcement agencies at a national and international level.

Actors, directors, and musicians are backing a bill to end the suffering of wild and exotic animals in traveling shows, which was launched in Congress on Tuesday, May 21.
Sponsored by Raúl Grijalva (D-az) and David Schweikert (R-az), the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act (Teapspa; HR2863) is being championed by Animal Defenders International, which has exposed suffering in Us circuses over many years and provided evidence to support the bipartisan bill.
‘The Reluctant Entertainers,’ a short Adi film of actors, musicians, and directors, calling on Congress to ‘leave the entertaining to those of us who want to perform,’ was screened at the livestream launch event before Representatives Grijalva and Schweikert, and Adi President Jan Creamer discussed the bipartisan bill. Rep. Grijalva noted: “We have an opportunity to extend our sense of humanity to other species on this planet,” while Rep. Schweikert said: “It’s just the right thing to do.

Renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, PhD, Dbe, has described the treatment of monkeys used in research as “shocking and inhumane”, calling for a phase out of their use at the earliest opportunity.
Witnessing footage from an Animal Defenders International (Adi) investigation of the Biomedical Primate Research Centre in the Netherlands, the Un Messenger of Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute said: “The video I have just watched allegedly shows conditions endured by monkeys in a research laboratory in the Netherlands. We know today that monkeys, along with many other animals, experience not only pain, but also emotions including fear and depression, so the way they are being treated in the video is shocking and inhumane. It is my considered opinion that those involved in this kind of research on primates should consider using alternative procedures that do not involve experimentation on intelligent, sentient beings. This research should be phased out as soon as possible.

Comedian Ricky Gervais has spoken out against the routine suffering of primates in research, before experiments on them even begin.
Reacting to a new video from Animal Defenders International (Adi) revealing the reality of life for animals inside Europe’s largest primate facility Ricky states: “To see these sensitive, intelligent animals born to suffer in this way makes me angry. It should make you angry too. Help save the primates from a life in the lab and demand that the government acts to end their use.”
The Biomedical Primate Research Centre (Bprc) in the Netherlands breeds animals for its own use and other laboratories, collaborating with researchers in the UK including at the University of Cambridge. Latest figures show that it has reportedly more than trebled its primate use, from 95 individuals in 2016 to 317 in 2017. The facility has some 1,600 primates – around 1350 macaques and 250 marmosets – with most of the macaques kept in breeding groups of 20-40 individuals.

Comedian Ricky Gervais has urged an end to the “madness”, supporting Animal Defenders International (Adi) in its call for a UK-wide ban on wild animal circus acts without delay.
The plea comes after a backbench bill to progress legislation in England was blocked, like previous attempts, by a single MP on Friday.
Ricky Gervais said: “Using and abusing animals is not what I call entertainment. A ban on wild animal circus acts needs to happen without delay. Please support Adi and help secure a UK-wide ban, ending this madness once and for all.”
Last month, the UK Government indicated it would ban wild animals in circuses within England by January 2020, allowing regulations brought in as a temporary measure to expire. Following years of promises to bring in legislation, however, the announcement has been welcomed cautiously.

Animal Defenders International (Adi) congratulates the Scottish Parliament for being the first nation in the UK to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses. MSPs today unanimously voted through the ban at the final Stage 3 debate for The Wild Animals in Travelling Circuses (Scotland) Bill, which now awaits Royal Assent.

Animal Defenders International (Adi) has released undercover footage of a fox on fur farm recovering after electrocution and trying to escape.
A fox on a Polish fur farm is dragged from a barren mesh cage by his tail, hung upside down, the fur farmer smacks the fox in the face with an electric probe, forcing the animal to bite onto it in a desperate attempt to defend himself. He is electrocuted and tossed, with a thud, seemingly lifeless, onto a cart.
However, as Adi’s hidden cameras, record more animals being killed, the fox begins to stir amongst the other dead foxes, finally slipping off the cart and making a run for it. The swearing farmer finally recaptures the fox and again hangs the animal upside down by a hind leg. But now the fox knows what will happen and tries to avoid the probe, clamping his mouth shut and twisting,...
