Return to the Suck Zone It’s been 28 years since Jan de Bont’s Twister stormed through cinemas, grossing $496 million worldwide. While it became a staple of weekend cable TV, with audiences often enjoying its weather spectacles over its thin plot, its impact on meteorology and storm chasing is undeniable. The original movie starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton left a significant mark on pop culture. The sequel, Twisters, endured a long development process before Universal landed on a team led by Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung and The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith. Chung’s direction, informed by the stylistic influences of

The upcoming release of Twisters has everyone on the edge of their seats, especially after hearing the harrowing experiences some cast members endured. Glen Powell, known for his daring roles, revealed just how extreme the filming conditions got, particularly when it involved having a giant jet engine blown in his face. Filming with Intensity Director Lee Isaac Chung demanded a high level of realism for Twisters. The film famously utilized highly realistic special effects to capture the chaotic nature of tornadoes. Chung’s dedication was clear from the start, reminiscent of the thorough approach he took with Minari, making his transition

It is no secret that the mobile phone has become like another appendage in our modern society. In a post-pandemic world, this matter has only become exceedingly evident. Seemingly inspired by this, “Everyphone Everywhere,” directed by Amos Why comedically yet intimately explores our dependency on the handy device.
Everyphone Everywhere is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival
The narrative splits its focus between a few characters. Chit Chung, a graphic designer, forgets his phone while on a trip to meet an old friend. Meanwhile, Raymond Ho faces family troubles amid his phone's recent hacking. Lastly, a woman named Ana waits in a private kitchen, witnessing her husband cheat on her through a security app.

Ostensibly, a film that centers around phones may not sound exciting, but the imagery used to convey such interactions makes for an engaging display.

Filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung broke out with 2020’s “Minari,” which landed multiple Oscar nominations including two for Chung (Best Director and Best Original Screenplay) and Best Picture. (The film won an Oscar for Yuh-Jung Youn in Best Supporting Actress.) Now, four years later, Chung is back and with an expected follow-up: “Twisters,” a sequel to 1996’s blockbuster hit “Twister.”
Universal debuted the first trailer for “Twisters” during Sunday’s Super Bowl, and the spot immediately spiked online interest in Chung’s first studio picture thanks to the way the spot teases the film’s massive set pieces and star appeal courtesy of Glen Powell. The actor, who helped “Anyone But You” become a sleeper hit and pops off the screen in Netflix’s “Hit Man” (out June 7), plays a storm chaser named Tyler Owens who helps “Twisters” protagonist Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) regain her mojo after a tragedy. All anybody wants to talk about these days is flooding, winter vortexes, and other natural disasters stemming from the ongoing climate crisis. Well, apparently, the tornado from "Twister" got wind of this (I'm sorry) and is back with a vengeance in the newly unveiled Super Bowl trailer for "Twisters."
Neither a direct follow-up to director Jan de Bont's 1996 natural disaster thriller nor a complete reboot of the franchise, "Twisters" follows a new team of storm chasers as they battle destructive cyclones in the present day. Apparently, at one point, "Twister" star Helen Hunt and "Blindspotting" co-writers/co-stars Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal pitched a proper legacy sequel that, according to Hunt, would've focused on "all Black and Brown storm chasers." However, the studio powers that be didn't go for it for "potentially shady" reasons, as Diggs told Business Insider last year.

Steven Yeun says his exit from Marvel’s Thunderbolts exit is entirely to do with scheduling, as he adds another film to his slate.
Earlier this week we covered the story that Steven Yeun had decided to walk away from a juicy role in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts.
Although it was never confirmed, the Beef star was heavily rumoured to be playing the role of Sentry in the ensemble film, which may well have placed him as the film’s antagonist.
It’s no secret that Marvel’s films continue to suffer from a villain problem and the casting of Yeun as Sentry would have been a wonderful opportunity to sidestep that issue. A gifted and respected actor playing a buzzy yet complex role? We could have been heading for some Thanos-level pathos there, so it’s a shame for the Marvel Cinematic Universe that Yeun decided to exit the project.

Apple TV+ is returning once again to Slow Horses, with a fifth season greenlit, the first major renewal of 2024.

The fifth outing of Slow Horses will be adapted from Herron’s Spook Street. Everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung) has a glamorous new girlfriend, but when a series of increasingly bizarre events occur across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected.

South Korean auteur Chung Ji-Young came to the eighth London East Asia Film Festival on Wednesday night with his latest film The Boys, which opens in its homeland on 1 November. Based on real events, which saw three innocent country boys imprisoned in 1999 for a callous murder-robbery in North Jeolla Province, the film stars Sol Kyung-gu as detective Joon-cheol. Once known as “Mad Dog”, Joon-cheol has mellowed over time, and when he receives information many years later that suggests the real criminals have gone free, Joon-cheol begins a crusade for justice — bringing down the wrath of the area’s corrupt lawmakers, who begin a campaign of intimidation intended to destroy his career and credibility.
Speaking after the movie, Director Chung acknowledged that, after 40 years in the film business, making films that have often ruffled some very important feathers, he did not have a particularly good relationship with the powers-that-be. “In short,...

Seemingly inspired by this, “Everyphone Everywhere,” directed by Amos Why comedically yet intimately explores our dependency on the handy device.
Everyphone Everywhere is screening at New York Asian Film Festival
The narrative splits its focus between a few characters. Chit Chung, a graphic designer, forgets his phone while on a trip to meet an old friend. Meanwhile, Raymond Ho faces family troubles amid his phone's recent hacking. Lastly, a woman named Ana waits in a private kitchen, witnessing her husband cheat on her through a security app.

Ostensibly, a film that centers around phones may not sound exciting, but the imagery used to convey such interactions makes for an engaging display.

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Star Sean Kaufman Explains Why Season 2 Feels ‘Crazy Different’ (Video)
“The Summer I Turned Pretty” Season 2 delves into some summertime sadness, and the actors found it tough to stay in the season’s dramatic headspace for too long.
“Whatever acting method people choose to use —replacement or method — it’s tough because it’s like I’m surrounded by funny people in a loving environment, and all I want to do — especially in moments of like extreme vulnerability like that — is to crack a joke to ease the tension or not let myself go there because it’s too painful,” Sean Kaufman, who plays Steven on the show, told TheWrap in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike. “To actually allow yourself to go there, especially day after day after day, like a lot of Season 2, it’s tough.”

Composer Sherri Chung admits she was late to the “Gremlins” party — only because she was too young and found it too scary. But when she grew older and was reintroduced to the movie, she thought “it was the greatest thing ever.”
The 1984 film, as well as Jerry Goldsmith’s score, became a key inspiration for her. So when she got the opportunity to score Max’s new animated series “Gremlins: Secret of the Mogwai,” directed by Tze Chun, she decided to “lean into the scary and the fear, but also the emotion” with her music.
The series is an origin story that gives a partial explanation as to how Gizmo ends up in a Chinatown antique store at the beginning of 1984’s “Gremlins.” To add a Chinese element to the score, Chung used bamboo flutes, but the meat of the score came from the erhu, a two-stringed bowed musical instrument...

Andy Murray is one step ahead of his competition during the 2023 grass-court season as he signed up for an Atp Challenger event in Surbiton.
Historically, grass courts have been the best for the 36-year-old who won two Grand Slam titles on the green surfaces as well as an Olympic gold medal. Therefore, it's not a surprise that after he experienced two disappointing losses on clay, the decision was made to skip the 2023 Roland Garros.
That gave Murray at least a couple of weeks that he's now ahead of the rest of the field, preparing on the grass courts. And already during the second week of the Roland Garros, the Scot will play a tournament on the grass court as he received a wild card for an Atp Challenger in Surbiton.

"Æon Flux" might not be as well-remembered as its contemporary "Neon Genesis Evangelion," and the 2005 live-action movie adaptation starring Charlize Theron is remembered perhaps even less, but Peter Chung's animated sci-fi series still holds a special place in the heart of many. Now, "Æon Flux" fans have a new opportunity to return to the '90s by taking a sound bath in composer Drew Neumann's remastered soundtrack for the show.
Waxwork Records is releasing the complete "Æon Flux" Original Series Soundtrack Box Set, marking the first time that the soundtrack has been officially available in any format. To make up for lost time, there are three different ways of listening: a deluxe box set comprised of six vinyl LPs, priced at 195; a multi-disc CD set, priced at 35; and for those of you who reject physical media entirely, it's also available across all digital streaming services. Last week, we learned that a "Twister" sequel is in the works at Universal, and Amblin may have found a director. This week, the project continues to pick up speed, as we've caught wind of its release date: according to Variety, "Twisters" is set to touch down on July 19, 2024.
The sequel to the 1996 Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt-led disaster movie has been in the works for a while now, with Deadline breaking the news in October that "Twisters" has a script from "The Revenant" screenwriter Mark L. Smith that reportedly excited even Amblin head Steven Spielberg himself. Though the project's plot details are still under wraps, that outlet also reported that Hunt is being sought for a return, and the follow-up film may involve the daughter of her and Paxton's characters, meteorologist Jo and weatherman Bill.

Universal and Amblin Entertainment have wasted no time in dating Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters, a follow-up to the classic 1996 film Twister.
Twisters will swirl into theaters July 19, 2024, the studio announced Tuesday. Word broke last week that the Oscar-nominated Chung, best known for directing Minari, was closing a deal to helm the event pic.
Adding to the film’s pedigree, Hollywood veteran Frank Marshall will produce. Warner Bros. is co-financing the project.
Chung will direct from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, who co-wrote the adapted screenplay of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant.

Another beloved Japanese animation film is getting a live-action adaptation. Makoto Shinkai's breathtaking 2016 sci-fi anime film "Your Name" is getting the live-action treatment, with Paramount enlisting Academy Award-nominated filmmaker of "Raya and the Last Dragon," Carlos López Estrada, to helm it. The film is currently in development, with Estrada writing the script, following an initial draft from "Bird Box" writer Eric Heisserer.
"Your Name" is considered a modern classic in Japan and was a significant hit in the country, grossing over 230 million at the time of its release. The film is a love story for the ages, plus, it combines the concepts of magic, time travel, and the beauty of friendship all in one. Its animation style is visceral, making the idea of a live-action remake seem less than ideal, but with Estrada attached, we can expect good things.

Korean film and TV story-telling has expanded and adapted under the influence of both Covid and streaming video. As a result, screenwriting today may be more in touch with audience needs, media executives in Busan heard.
A panel discussion on Saturday, organized by the Busan Story Market, a new wing of the Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm) sought to define Korean story telling and analyze why it is currently so successful.
One explanation offered by Hwang Hyejung, chief content officer at Korean streamer TVing, was that writers have broadened their outlook to include more current and realistic topics. Romantic comedies and melodramas are no longer the defining genres.
“Korean content has its foundations in family values and Confucianism. That compares with Hollywood’s super fantasy stories,” said Hwang. “These days, Korean realism is well-received among the Mz generation [people born between 1981 and 2005], due to Covid and the crises we’re experiencing.”

"Minari" is one of those movies that feel like both a punch to the gut and a warm hug at the same time. Lee Isaac Chung's story of a Korean American family trying to achieve the quintessential American Dream is one that many can relate to, in one way or another. Perhaps it was because of the Yi family's continued resilience and faith that the film garnered so much critical acclaim, earning six Oscar nominations and one win for Youn Yuh-jung as Best Supporting Actress.
We see this resilience come full circle at the end of the film, with the family's produce barn gone in a fire but the family themselves being closer than ever. However, this wasn't originally supposed to be the film's definitive ending, according to the screenplay book for the film. The book, published by "Minari" distributor A24, revealed that the movie could have instead ended...

With a steady catalog of media new and old, there is quite literally always something to watch on Netflix. The streamer is constantly producing, curating, and promoting a unique plethora of films and shows for our viewing pleasure. Whatever your tastes, you're guaranteed to find something bingeworthy on the platform. Netflix has even become a host for quality non-English television, especially after the smash success of shows like "Squid Game" and "All of Us Are Dead." But until series achieve ludicrous virality, like the aptly-named "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," it's difficult to keep up with the many, many K-dramas that Netflix churn out.
Fortunately, that might not be the case for another recent drama, the female-led mystery thriller "Little Women." Despite a quiet release on Netflix in early September, the series is already gaining a generous amount of buzz. With its impressive cast and crew and tantalizing storyline, "Little Women" could...

Long before “Minari”, Isaac Chung had directed four feature movies, with “Abigail Harm” being his most experimental, in a style that has almost nothing to do with the award winning 2020 title, as it unfolds like a type of urban fairy tale, inspired by the ancient Korean folktale “The Woodcutter and the Nymph”.
“Abigail Harm” is screening at Hong Kong Arts Centre, as part of Cries and Whispers: Film Retrospective of Lee Isaac Chung
The titular woman has a rather unusual profession, as she reads to blind people, including a rather cheeky older man who only wants to hear the dirty parts, played by “Rocky”’’s Paulie, Burt Young, in a fictionalized New York. One day, a stranger appears in her apartment, played by “Minari”’s Will Paton, direly wounded and asking for help. To thank her for her care, he narrates a story about a creature who comes to Earth...

Eight years after “Munyurangabo”, Lee Isaac Chung and his frequent collaborator, Samuel Gray Anderson, return to Rwanda to co-direct a documentary on 39-year-old Jean Kwezi, who was separated from his family during the 1994 genocide, only reuniting with them many years later, long after they presumed him dead.
“I Have Seen My Last Born” is screening at Hong Kong Arts Centre, as part of Cries and Whispers: Film Retrospective of Lee Isaac Chung
The documentary is split into two parts, with the first one dealing with his life, working for Chung’s Rwandan outpost for his U.S.-based production company, Almond Tree Films, with his daughter, who has grown up apart from him and now learns to live with him, while the second deals with an extended visit to his mother’s home. Through extended interviews with the protagonist and of his daughter’s footage, mostly in school, we learn...

After his first feature “Munyarangabo”, shot in Rwanda, director Lee Isaac Chung returned to the United States to make his second film, this time inspired by the poem “Lucky Life”, written by Gerald Stern. In interviews, the filmmaker mentions how he found himself captivated by the emotional journey of the poem, which reminded him of his life, witnessing several of his friends battling cancer, as he tells Indiewire. Many of the techniques he had used in his previous work, he utilized again in this production, for example, letting the actors and actresses improvise some of their dialogue, thus creating a more natural flow and rhythm to the narratives and the overall development of their characters. In the end, “Lucky Life” managed to manifest his reputation as one of the leading figures withing US-American indie cinema, with the movie premiering at Tribeca Film Festival in 2010 and from then on, being screened at many international festivals.
