It’s case closed for The Rookie: Feds. The ABC series isn’t getting a season 2. The Rookie spinoff starred Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie FBI agent.
‘The Rookie’ spinoff canceled after one season at ABC
The Rookie: Feds premiered in 2022 and wrapped up its first season in May 2023. While The Rookie earned a season 6 renewal in April, ABC held off on making a decision about the future of Feds, leaving the show in limbo throughout the months-long WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Now, with the writers’ strike over and the actors’ union having reached a tentative deal with the studios, the network has decided not to move forward with The Rookie: Feds Season 2, Deadline reports.

It’s not a great day for spinoffs at ABC. The network has axed “The Rookie: Feds” after one season and will not move forward with “The Good Doctor” spinoff, “The Good Lawyer.”
The spinoff of ABC’s “The Rookie,” which was renewed for a sixth season, stars Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. The procedural was introduced as a two-part event during the current fourth season of “The Rookie,” where Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and the LA division of the FBI enlist the help of Simone when one of her former students is a suspect in a terror attack.
Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter are co-creators, co-showrunners and executive producers. Mark Gordon, Niecy Nash-Betts, Nathan Fillion, Michelle Chapman, Bill Norcross, Corey Miller, Michael Goi and Bibby Dunn are executive producers. The Rookie: Feds is stuck in renewal limbo. The show wrapped up its first season in May 2022, but ABC still hasn’t announced if it will return for season 2. However, series star Niecy Nash-Betts says she’s eager to reprise her role as FBI agent Simone Clark.

While ABC has announced cancellation or renewal decisions for most of its scripted series, The Rookie: Feds remains in limbo. The Rookie spinoff premiered in September 2022 and quickly scored a full-season order. It averaged 4.3 million viewers through its season 1 run and is near the bottom of the pack in terms of ABC dramas, according to TVLine.
Due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it may be some time before the network makes a decision about the fate of The Rookie: Feds.

ABC still has some decisions to make on its scripted slate.
The network has yet to make final calls on renewals for comedy Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
It comes after ABC passed on four of its pilots: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
Deadline understands that ABC is unlikely to make all of these decisions until the writers strike is over and the future of the fall season is clearer. A decision on Home Economics may come first out of the three.

“The Rookie: Feds” remains on the bubble, as one of two shows at ABC awaiting news regarding a renewal — and its star, Niecy Nash-Betts, is crossing her fingers for a second season.
Nash-Betts has had an in-demand year, starring in Netflix’s “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and hosting Fox’s gameshow “Don’t Forget the Lyrics,” in addition to headlining “The Rookie: Feds.” And she’s hoping to keep her busy schedule going, continuing to play her character, Simone Clark, on the ABC police procedural.
“I love my job so much, I love the people that I work with, and I love the fact that I get to work with my better half over there,” Nash-Betts says of her wife, musician Jessica Betts, who plays her love interest on “The Rookie: Feds.”

Alexi Hawley has two successful law enforcement shows on broadcast television currently. The Rookie is in its fifth season on ABC, while its spin-off, The Rookie: Feds, is in its freshman season on the same network.
The shows have been successful thanks to their innovative ideas, whether on the premise or the in episodes. They both also have very interesting characters who are a pleasure to watch.
From Alexi comes The Recruit. To fully understand how The Recruit compares to existing shows with his name attached, it is important to take a quick look at them.
The Rookie premiered in 2018 and is set in the Los Angeles Police Department. It primarily focuses on John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the department. He is treated as a joke in the early seasons but later earns himself a place in the force.

When Alexi Hawley was creating The Rookie, he probably didn't anticipate it becoming such a massive hit among audiences in the way it has. Something of a rarity in many shows is getting a spin-off.
The Rookie has earned itself a spin-off titled The Rookie: Feds.
On The Rookie, John Nolan is a middle-aged man who leaves his successful job in construction to pursue his dream of being a cop now that his marriage has ended and his son is all grown.
On The Rookie: Feds, Simone Clark is a middle-aged woman who quits her decades-long career as a high school guidance counselor and pursues her dream of joining the FBI now that her twins are all grown.
The Rookie was an instant hit when it premiered, thanks to its well-crafted characters and extensive and innovative narrative.
It thus should not have come as a surprise when ABC decided to get in on the spin-off.

Training a wild card probationary agent like Simone Clark (Niecy Nash-Betts) was not an assignment by-the-book Carter Hope (James Lesure) asked for when he joined the L.A. bureau’s new fast-response Special Investigative Unit on The Rookie: Feds. “Carter is definitely someone who prides himself in playing by the rules; Simone seems more inclined to make up rules that justify the results she’s after,” Lesure muses. Still, we’ve already seen their opposing approaches meld to nab an arms dealer on the FBI’s Most Wanted List — and that was just in Week 2! (Credit: ABC/Robert Ector) In the November 1 episode, the unit’s hunt for an international assassin called “The Reaper” sends the pair undercover in a women’s prison in search of answers: her as an inmate, him as a guard. Niecy Nash-Betts‘ The Rookie: Feds will stay for a full season. ABC has ordered nine more episodes of The Rookie spinoff, bringing its Season 1 episode count to 22. Nash-Betts plays Special Agent Simone Clark, the FBI’s oldest rookie, in the crime procedural. Clark is a force of nature, the living embodiment of a dream deferred. She works together with her new colleagues at the Bureau to bring down the country’s toughest criminals. Clark and her fellow Rookie: Feds players were introduced in a backdoor pilot in The Rookie Season 4. Nathan Fillion helped usher in the new series by appearing as John Nolan in The Rookie: Feds series premiere on September 27. The full-season pickup comes after just four episodes of the freshman series have aired. After its network debut, the drama jumped nearly five times in adults 18-49 after delayed multi-platform viewing with a delayed-viewing lift of +394 (1.53 rating vs. 0.31 rating), per ABC.

The FBI’s oldest rookie will stay on the case for a while longer.
ABC has picked up a full season of its first-year show The Rookie: Feds, starring Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the aforementioned new FBI agent. The network has given an old-school, back nine order to the drama, bringing its total for the season to 22 episodes.
A spinoff of The Rookie, now in its fifth season, Feds was introduced in an episode of the former show last season before earning a spot on ABC’s fall slate. The show has performed modestly on air so far, averaging a little under 2 million viewers the night it airs. It draws considerably more viewers, however, after it airs — doubling to 3.96 million viewers after a week of delayed viewing.
The Sept. 27 premiere also added about 2 million viewers via streaming, giving it a seven-day, multi-platform audience of about 6.4 million viewers.
