Cassells recently co-produced the crime war drama independent film CHERRY, co-directed by the world's number two highest box office-grossing filmmakers, Anthony and Joe Russo, starring Tom Holland, Ciara Bravo, Jack Reynor, Michael Gandolfini, Jeff Wahlberg, and Forrest Goodluck. In a heated bidding war, CHERRY was acquired by Apple TV+ during the COVID-19 pandemic and began streaming March 2021 complimented with a theatrical release via A24. The Hideaway co-financed and produced the film with AGBO where Cassells was deployed to Cleveland, Ohio, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia for production. CHERRY's crew, including camera/steadicam operator Geoff Haley won the SOC's Camera Operator of the Year in Film, Director of Photography Newton Thomas Sigel was ASC nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Feature Film, and the sound editing team were MPSE nominated for the Golden Reel Award in Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing for Feature Effects and Foley.
As an executive, Cassells was instrumental in supporting President, Matthew Rhodes, on the company's slate of theatrically released blockbuster titles: the sci-fi action movie, BLOODSHOT (Sony), directed by VFX maestro Dave S.F. Wilson starring Vin Diesel, Guy Pearce, Eiza Gonzalez, Sam Heughan, Toby Kebbell, and Lamorne Morris. The movie was theatrically released worldwide March 2020 and is based on the Valiant graphic novel of the same name. BLOODSHOT was nominated for multiple People's Choice Awards, VES awards, and a Saturn Award; the sci-fi comedy franchise, MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL (Sony), directed by F. Gary Gray starring Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Rebecca Ferguson, Kumail Nanjiani, and was released theatrically worldwide June 2019. The movie was nominated for numerous People's Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and a Kids' Choice Award, amongst others; The Hideaway co-financed and Executive Produced the action movie, MILE 22 (STX Entertainment), directed by Peter Berg starring Mark Wahlberg, John Malkovich, Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais, and Ronda Rousey being released theatrically worldwide August 2018. It won a Taurus Stunt Award.
Prior to The Hideaway, Cassells associate produced the independent films CHARLIE SAYS (IFC Films) directed by Mary Harron starring Merritt Wever, Matt Smith, Hannah Murray, Suki Waterhouse, Chace Crawford, Annabeth Gish, and Grace Van Dien with its worldwide premiere staged at Venice International Film Festival in which the film was nominated for the Venice Horizons' Best Film. In the U.S., CHARLIE SAYS premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and was theatrically released May 2019; and sci-fi romantic comedy TIME FREAK (Lionsgate) directed by Andrew Bowler starring Asa Butterfield, Sophie Turner, and Skyler Gisondo. Cassells made the latter film with Academy Award nominated Producer Ray Mansfield of QC Entertainment (GET OUT, BLACKKKLANSMAN). The movie was nominated for a Saturn Award for best Blu-Ray/DVD Release.
Prior to that, Cassells assisted Lori McCreery and acting legend Morgan Freeman at Revelations Entertainment on Season 2 of CBS' smash hit political series Madam Secretary created by Barbara Hall starring Tea Leoni and Tim Daly that would go on to air for a total of six seasons. Before that, Cassells was at agency Innovative Artists assisting Talent Agents Josiah Akinyele & Courtney Miller in addition to General Counsel & Head of Business Affairs Jonathan Coronel.
Cassells has a long producing career ahead of him and is a contributing member of the Producer's Guild of America, Color of Change, Sierra Club, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema and Television from California State University, Fullerton.
