The country music world shared the stage at the 2024 ACM Awards, where Post Malone performed songs from his upcoming country album, Dua Lipa joined Chris Stapleton for a duet, and Avril Lavigne and Noah Kahan partnered with country musicians onstage.
It almost felt like Beyoncé — who recently made history on the country charts with Cowboy Country — might pop up. She didn’t Thursday night, but host Reba McEntire did reference Queen Bey’s historic project during her opening monologue.
“We’re here to talk about country music and how everyone is invited and welcome here at country music’s party of the year. From Mother Maybelle to Cowboy Carter, country music is so big in 2024 that there’s room for everybody,” she said. “We all love country [music] and we all are country, and we’re keeping the circle unbroken, but growing it to even bigger and better.”

Noah Kahan and Kelsea Ballerini gave a two-song duet at the 2024 ACM Awards.
The pair opened with “Mountain With a View,” a song off Ballerini’s ACM Album of the Year nominee Rolling Up the Welcome Mat (For Good), before segueing into the title track of Kahan’s breakthrough album Stick Season. Ballerini took the stage solo, singing from a couch before Kahan launched into his megahit amidst tall grass. The pair ended up mashing up their two tracks before Ballerini joined Kahan in singing the catchy, inescapable chorus of “Stick Season.

It is possible to be “scared of nothin’ and … scared to death” at the same, at least so says Luke Combs, who holds his own bellowing about the virtues of the Sooner State over a torrent of wind and rain in the video for his new song, “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma.” The song comes off the upcoming soundtrack to Twisters, the 28-years-late sequel to Twister (and grammarians will note that Combs’ double-negative suggests there is love in Oklahoma, even if it’s a North Carolinian turned Nashvillian singing his heart out.

The Academy of Country Music Awards show set for May 16 is getting some additional octane in its performance lineup with the addition of two of the biggest artists of the moment from outside the country genre, Post Malone and Noah Kahan.
Malone looks set for a solo moment on the ACM Awards show, while Kahan will join female artist of the year nominee Kelsea Ballerini for a duet.
Even without a new album out, Malone has been ubiquitous lately, in pop and even country. Entertainer of the Year is the biggest prize at the Academy of Country Music Awards, honoring an artist’s incredible year across all metrics, like touring, streaming and radio. While there is no specific formula on how to predict the winner, it’s often someone who dominated the country sphere in more ways than one, and who solidified themselves as the face of country music. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the seven-person race for this year’s award.
If we are going by process of elimination, perhaps the first person out is Kane Brown. He is one of country music’s most popular artists of the past 10 years, undoubtedly so. However, 2023 wasn’t necessarily a standout year for him, evidenced by the fact that he is only nominated in this category. Plus, Brown is surely going to be back in a stronger year, perhaps with...

Carin León feels like he’s been hallucinating the last three weekends.
He’s running on just a few hours of sleep and the high of making history at Stagecoach, where he became the first música mexicana singer to perform at the country festival. Onstage, León looked like any other country act, sporting a sleeveless button-up shirt and a matching cowboy hat. But instead, he performed his rootsy, romantic rolas, backed by a full banda: tubas, accordion, and all.
León sees his efforts to blend country music with música mexicana as a poker match.

Kelsea Ballerini is living her best life. In 2024, the 30-year-old country singer celebrated a Best Country Album Grammy nomination and a solo hosting gig for the CMT Awards. She released a highly praised album, Rolling Up the Welcome Mat, about healing from divorce and hit her stride in her love life. See Ballerini behind the scenes at the 2024 CMT Awards with her boyfriend of over a year, Chase Stokes.

Ballerini hosted the CMT Awards solo for the first time in 2024. She previously co-hosted with Kane Brown and Anthony Mackie. Despite leading the awards show by herself, the Tennessee native seemed relaxed and radiant during the annual event. Ballerini and Stokes walked the red carpet together with huge smiles on their faces. The Outer Banks actor let Ballerini shine as he held her hand and helped her walk in heels.

Luke Combs is the man of the hour. The 59th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, April 9, and Combs came out on top with eight bids, including Entertainer of the Year. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
This is Combs’s fifth nomination in a row for Entertainer of the Year, an award he has yet to win. This year he’s up against Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen and lone female nominee Lainey Wilson. Women are consistently underrepresented in Entertainer of the Year, though Carrie Underwood won in 2020 (in a tie with Thomas Rhett) and Miranda Lambert finally prevailed in 2022. But we mustn’t underestimate Wilson here. She pulled off a huge upset at the CMA Awards last fall, claiming Entertainer of the Year despite being relatively new on the scene.

“Fast Car” continues to drive Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to the top — this time, at the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards.
Combs is the top contender this year with eight nominations, competing for entertainer of the year as well as single and song of the year with “Fast Car.” He shares the latter nomination with Chapman, who wrote the song alone and had major success with it in 1988, 35 years before Combs brought new life to the track and made it a country hit.
Chapman won in the same category at last year’s Country Music Association Awards, becoming the first Black person to do so. She and Combs earned praise for teaming up for a live performance of the song at February’s Grammy Awards, where Combs was nominated for his version of the song; Chapman won two Grammys for her original version.

Beyoncé has become the first Black woman to top Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart with her new album, Cowboy Carter.
The album has also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with the biggest week of 2024, marking her eighth entry atop the chart. In doing so, Beyoncé knocked Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time and Future and Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You from their respective positions on the Top Country Albums and Billboard 200 charts.
Per Billboard, Cowboy Carter racked up 407,000 equivalent album units, the most since Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) moved 1.653 million last fall. This included 300 million on-demand streams and 168,000 traditional album sales.
While Beyoncé is the first Black woman to reign over the Top Country Albums chart, other Black artists such as Charlie Pride, Darius Rucker, and Kane Brown previously went to No. 1 on the chart.

Cody Johnson, Jelly Roll and Kelsea Ballerini went into the 2024 CMT Music Awards tied for the most nominations (three), and they have maintained that tie all through the public voting process for Video of the Year. The top category started with 16 preliminary contenders, and those three artists are now the finalists eligible to win the award tonight, April 7, during a ceremony airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. “It’s my final year, yeah,” Ballerini confirms. “I’ve hosted or co-hosted this show for four years now,...
